Let $M=G/K$ be a Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type. We provide a way of constructing $K$-equivariant embeddings from $M$ to its tangent space $T_oM$ at the origin by using the polarity of the $K$-action. As an application, we reconstruct the $K$-equivariant holomorphic embedding so called the Harish-Chandra realization and the $K$-equivariant symplectomorphism constructed by Di Scala-Loi and Roos under appropriate identifications of spaces. Moreover, we characterize the holomorphic/symplectic embedding of $M$ by means of the polarity of the $K$-action. Furthermore, we show a special class of totally geodesic submanifolds in $M$ is realized as either linear subspaces or bounded domains of linear subspaces in $T_oM$ by the $K$-equivariant embeddings. We also construct a $K$-equivariant holomorphic/symplectic embedding of an open dense subset of the compact dual $M^*$ into its tangent space at the origin as a dual of the holomorphic/symplectic embedding of $M$.
In this work, we first establish short time existence and Shi's type estimate of second Ricci flow on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds. As an application, we use the second Ricci flow to discuss the existence of Kaehler-Einstein metric on complete noncompact Hermitian manifolds.
In this paper, we will give a horizontal gradient estimate of positive solutions of $Δ_b u = - λu$ on complete noncompact pseudo-Hermitian manifolds. As a consequence, we recapture the Liouville theorem of positive pseudo-harmonic functions on Sasakian manifolds with nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature.
In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermit…
Let $G$ be a connected semisimple Lie group with its maximal compact subgroup $K$ being simply-connected. We show that the twisted equivariant $KK$-theory $KK^{\bullet}_{G}(G/K, τ_G^G)$ of $G$ has a ring structure induced from the renowned ring structure of the twisted equivariant $K$-theory $K^{\bullet}_{K}(K, τ_K^K)$ of a maximal compact subgroup $K$. We give a geometric description of representatives in $KK^{\bullet}_{G}(G/K, τ_G^G)$ in terms of equivalence classes of certain equivariant correspondences and obtain an optimal set of generators of this ring. We also establish various properti…
Let $M$ be an irreducible smooth complex projective variety equipped with an action of a compact Lie group $G$, and let $({\mathcal L},h)$ be a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$, we construct a $G$-equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle $(L\,,H)$ on $X\times M$ (the action of $G$ on $X$ is trivial), such that the corresponding Quillen determinant line bundle $({\mathcal Q}, h_Q)$, which is a $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian line bundle on $M$, is isomorphic to the given $G$--equivariant holomorphic Hermitian lin…
For a finite-dimensional (but possibly noncompact) symplectic manifold with a compact group acting with a proper moment map, we show that the square of the moment map is an equivariantly perfect Morse function in the sense of Kirwan, and that the set of critical points of the square of the moment map is a countable discrete union of compact sets. We show that certain integrals of equivariant cohomology classes localizes as a sum of contributions from these compact critical sets, and we bound the contribution from each critical set. In the case (1) that the contribution from higher critical set…
The Riemannian symmetric space SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) is both Hermitian symmetric and quaternionic Kahler symmetric. Let M be a hypersurface in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) and denote by TM its tangent bundle. The complex structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal complex subbundle C of TM, and the quaternionic structure of SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) determines a maximal quaternionic subbundle Q of TM. In this article we investigate hypersurfaces in SU_{2,m}/S(U_2U_m) for which C and Q are closely related to the shape of M.
We find upper and lower bounds for the first eigenvalue and the volume entropy of a noncompact real analytic Kähler manifold, in terms of Calabi's diastasis function and diastatic entropy, which are sharp in the case of the complex hyperbolic space. As a corollary we obtain explicit lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the geodesic balls of an Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type.
We define an equivariant index of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators on possibly noncompact manifolds, acted on by compact, connected Lie groups. The main result in this paper is that the index decomposes into irreducible representations according to the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.
We prove that there is no faithful finite-dimensional representation by skew-hermitian matrices of a ``basic algebra of observables'' B on a noncompact symplectic manifold M. Consequently there exists no finite-dimensional quantization of any Lie subalgebra of the Poisson algebra C^\infty(M) containing B.
Let M be a Hamiltonian T space with a proper moment map, bounded below in some component. In this setting, we give a combinatorial description of the T-equivariant cohomology of M, extending results of Goresky, Kottwitz and MacPherson and techniques of Tolman and Weitsman. Moreover, when M is equipped with an antisymplectic involution σanticommuting with the action of T, we also extend to this noncompact setting the ``mod 2'' versions of these results to the real locus Q:= M^σof M. We give applications of these results to the theory of hypertoric varieties.
Let $K\backslash G$ be an irreducible Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type and $Γ\,\subset\, G$ a closed torsionfree discrete subgroup. Let $X$ be a compact Kähler manifold and $ρ\, :\, π_1(X, x_0)\,\longrightarrow\, Γ$ a homomorphism such that the adjoint action of $ρ(π_1(X, x_0))$ on $\text{Lie}(G)$ is completely reducible. A theorem of Corlette associates to $ρ$ a harmonic map $X\, \longrightarrow\, K\backslash G/Γ$. We give a criterion for this harmonic map to be holomorphic. We also give a criterion for it to be anti--holomorphic.
We study the symplectic structure of the holomorphic coadjoint orbits, generalizing a theorem of McDuff on the symplectic structure of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type.
We prove that the invariant part, with respect to a compact group action satisfying certain condition, of the direct image of a Nakano positive Hermitian holomorphic vector bundle over a bounded pseudoconvex domain is Nakano positive. We also consider the action of the noncompact group $\mathbb{R}^m$ and get the same result for a family of tube domains, which leads to a new method to the matrix-valued Prekopa's theorem originally proved by Raufi. The two main ingredients in our method are Hörmander's $L^2$ theory of $\bar\partial$ and the recent work of Deng-Ning-Zhang-Zhou on characterization…
With the aid of the theory of Jordan triple systems, we construct an explicit bi-symplectomorphism between a Hermitian symmetric space of non-compact type and $\C^n$ equipped with both the flat Kaehler-form and the Fubini-Study form. Our symplectomorphism is an explicit version of the symplectomorphism between Kaehler manifolds with non positive radial curvature and $\C^n$, whose existence was proved by Dusa McDuff. As a byproduct we get an interesting characterization of the Bergman form on a Hermitian space in terms of its restriction to classical Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact typ…
For simple Lie groups, the only homogeneous manifolds $G/K$, where $K$ is maximal compact subgroup, for which the phase of the scalar product of two coherent state vectors is twice the symplectic area of a geodesic triangle are the hermitian symmetric spaces. An explicit calculation of the multiplicative factor on the complex Grassmann manifold and its noncompact dual is presented. It is shown that the multiplicative factor is identical with the two-cocycle considered by A. Guichardet and D. Wigner for simple Lie groups.
This work deals with relations between a bounded cohomological invariant and the geometry of Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. The invariant, obtained from the Kähler class, is used to define and characterize a special class of totally geodesic embeddings, called "tight embeddings". In addition, special isometric actions of finitely generated groups on Hermitian symmetric spaces are studied. Results of a joint work with M. Burger and A. Iozzi about surface group representations are also discussed.
We show that an equivariantly embedded Hermitian symmetric space in a projective space, which contains neither a projective space nor a hyperquadric as a component, is characterized by their fundamental forms as a local submanifold of the projective space. Using some invariant-theoretic properties of the fundamental forms and Se-ashi's work on linear differential equations of finite type, we reduce the proof to the vanishing of certain Spencer cohomology groups. The vanishing is checked by Kostant's harmonic theory for Lie algebra cohomology.
In this article we prove first of all the nonexistence of holomorphic submersions other than covering maps between compact quotients of complex unit balls, with a proof that works equally well in a more general equivariant setting. For a non-equidimensional surjective holomorphic map between compact ball quotients, our method applies to show that the set of critical values must be nonempty and of codimension 1. In the equivariant setting the line of arguments extend to holomorphic mappings of maximal rank into the complex projective space or the complex Euclidean space, yielding in the latter …
There is a known hyperkähler structure on any complexified Hermitian symmetric space $G/K$, whose construction relies on identifying $G/K$ with both a (co)adjoint orbit and the cotangent bundle to the compact Hermitian symmetric space $G_u/K_0$. Via a family of explicit diffeomorphisms, we show that almost all of the complex structures are equivalent to the one on $G/K$; via a family of related diffeomorphisms, we show that almost all of the symplectic structures are equivalent to the one on $T^*\left(G_u/K_0\right)$. We highlight the intermediate Kähler structures, which share a holomorphic a…
Assume that the circle group acts holomorphically on a compact Kähler manifold with isolated fixed points and that the action can be lifted holomorphically to a holomorphic Hermitian vector bundle. We give a heat kernel proof of the equivariant holomorphic Morse inequalities. We use some techniques developed by Bismut and Lebeau. These inequalities, first obtained by Witten using a different argument, produce bounds on the multiplicities of weights occurring in the twisted Dolbeault cohomologies in terms of the data of the fixed points.
This paper studies the geometry of Cartan-Hartogs domains from the symplectic point of view. Inspired by duality between compact and noncompact Hermitian symmetric spaces, we construct a dual counterpart of Cartan-Hartogs domains and give explicit expression of global Darboux coordinates for both Cartan-Hartogs and their dual. Further, we compute their symplectic capacity and show that a Cartan-Hartogs admits a symplectic duality if and only if it reduces to be a complex hyperbolic space.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group, and $M$ a compact Hamiltonian $G$-space, with moment map $J$. For each $G$-equivariant Hermitian vector bundle $E$ over $M$, one has an associated twisted Spin-C Dirac operator, whose equivariant index is a symplectic invariant of $E$. In the present paper, we study gluing properties of the equivariant index under "symplectic cutting" operations. Our main application is a proof of the Guillemin-Sternberg conjecture, which says that if $E=L$ is a quantizing line bundle and $0$ a regular value of $J$, the multiplicity of the trivial representation in the…
We prove an equidistribution result for totally geodesic submanifolds in a compact locally symmetric space. In the case of Hermitian locally symmetric spaces, this gives a convergence theorem for currents of integration along totally geodesic subvarieties. As a corollary, we obtain that on a complex surface which is a compact quotient of the bidisc or of the 2-ball, there is at most a finite number of totally geodesic curves with negative self intersection. More generally, we prove that there are only finitely many exceptional totally geodesic divisors in a compact Hermitian locally symmetric …
We prove that given a Hitchin representation in a real split rank 2 group $\mathsf G_0$, there exists a unique equivariant minimal surface in the corresponding symmetric space. As a corollary, we obtain a parametrization of the Hitchin components by a Hermitian bundle over Teichmüller space. The proof goes through introducing holomorphic curves in a suitable bundle over the symmetric space of $\mathsf G_0$. Some partial extensions of the construction hold for cyclic bundles in higher rank.
We consider a connected symplectic manifold $M$ acted on properly and in a Hamiltonian fashion by a connected Lie group $G$. Inspired to the recent paper \cite{gb2}, see also \cite{ch} and \cite{pacini}, we study Lagrangian orbits of Hamiltonian actions. The dimension of the moduli space of the Lagrangian orbits is given and we also describe under which condition a Lagrangian orbit is isolated. If $M$ is a compact Kähler manifold we give a necessary and sufficient condition to an isometric action admits a Lagrangian orbit. Then we investigate Lagrangian homogeneous submanifolds on the symplect…
We study the Morse theory of the Yang-Mills-Higgs functional on the space of pairs $(A,Φ)$, where $A$ is a unitary connection on a rank 2 hermitian vector bundle over a compact Riemann surface, and $Φ$ is a holomorphic section of $(E, d_A")$. We prove that a certain explicitly defined substratification of the Morse stratification is perfect in the sense of $\G$-equivariant cohomology, where $\G$ denotes the unitary gauge group. As a consequence, Kirwan surjectivity holds for pairs. It also follows that the twist embedding into higher degree induces a surjection on equivariant cohomology. This …
Let $(M,ω)$ be a connected symplectic manifold on which a connected Lie group $G$ acts properly and in a Hamiltonian fashion with moment map $μ:M \lra \mf g^*$. Our purpose is investigate multiplicity-free actions, giving criteria to decide a multiplicity freenes of the action. As an application we give the complete classification of multiplicity-free actions of compact Lie groups acting isometrically and in a Hamiltonian fashion on Hermitian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Successively we make a connection between multiplicity-free actions on $M$ and multiplicity-free actions on the symp…
Since the work of Henri Cartan finite dimensional Riemannian symmetric spaces are an important subject of mathematical interest. They are related in a natural way to semisimple Lie groups. In this work we introduce and study their infinite dimensional generalization: Affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces. Affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces are infinite dimensional symmetric spaces associated to affine Kac-Moody groups. They have the structure of tame Fréchet manifolds; the natural Ad-invariant scalar product on affine Kac-Moody algebras is Lorentzian, making affine Kac-Moody symmetric spaces into L…
We consider SU(3)-equivariant dimensional reduction of Yang-Mills theory over certain cyclic orbifolds of the 5-sphere which are Sasaki-Einstein manifolds. We obtain new quiver gauge theories extending those induced via reduction over the leaf spaces of the characteristic foliation of the Sasaki-Einstein structure, which are projective planes. We describe the Higgs branches of these quiver gauge theories as moduli spaces of spherically symmetric instantons which are SU(3)-equivariant solutions to the Hermitian Yang-Mills equations on the associated Calabi-Yau cones, and further compare them to…
We extend the definition of Weinstein's Action homomorphism to Hamiltonian actions with equivariant moment maps of (possibly infinite-dimensional) Lie groups on symplectic manifolds, and show that under conditions including a uniform bound on the symplectic areas of geodesic triangles the resulting homomorphism extends to a quasimorphism on the universal cover of the group. We apply these principles to finite dimensional Hermitian Lie groups like Sp(2n,R), reinterpreting the Guichardet-Wigner quasimorphisms, and to the infinite dimensional groups of Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms Ham(M,\om) of cl…
Let $(M, g)$ be a real analytic Kaehler manifold. We say that a smooth map $E_p:W\to M$ from a neighborhood $W$ of the origin of $T_pM$ into $M$ is a {\em diastatic exponential} at $p$ if it satisfies $$(d \E_p)_0=\id_{T_pM},$$ $$D_p(\E_p (v))=g_p(v, v), \forall v\in W,$$ where $D_p$ is Calabi's diastasis function at $p$ (the usual exponential $\exp_p$ obviously satisfied these equations when $D_p$ is replaced by the square of the geodesics distance $d^2_p$ from $p$). In this paper we prove that for every point $p$ of an Hermitian symmetric space of noncompact type M there exists a globally de…
