For a proper action by a locally compact group $G$ on a manifold $M$ with a $G$-equivariant Spin-structure, we obtain obstructions to the existence of complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature. We focus on the case where $M/G$ is noncompact. The obstructions follow from a Callias-type index theorem, and relate to positive scalar curvature near hypersurfaces in $M$. We also deduce some other applications of this index theorem. If $G$ is a connected Lie group, then the obstructions to positive scalar curvature vanish under a mild assumption on the action. In that case, we generalise a construction by Lawson and Yau to obtain complete $G$-invariant Riemannian metrics with uniformly positive scalar curvature, under an equivariant bounded geometry assumption.
The equivariant coarse index is well-understood and widely used for actions by discrete groups. We extend the definition of this index to general locally compact groups. We use a suitable notion of admissible modules over $C^*$-algebras of continuous functions to obtain a meaningful index. Inspired by work by Roe, we then develop a localised variant, with values in the $K$-theory of a group $C^*$-algebra. This generalises the Baum-Connes assembly map to non-cocompact actions. We show that an equivariant index for Callias-type operators is a special case of this localised index, obtain results …
Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular, locally compact group $G$ on a complete Riemannian manifold $M$. For equivariant elliptic operators that are invertible outside a cocompact subset of $M$, we show that a localised index in the $K$-theory of the maximal group $C^*$-algebra of $G$ is well-defined. The approach is based on the use of maximal versions of equivariant localised Roe algebras, and many of the technical arguments in this paper are used to handle the ways in which they differ from their reduced versions. By using the maximal group $C^*$-algebra instead of its reduced …
The goal is to understand the index-theoretic aspects of the recent preprint of R. Nest and F. Radulescu, math.OA/9911042. The basic observation (due to E. Guenter/N. Higson) is that the index of the Toeplitz operator is equal to the index of an associated Callias type operator, i.e. a Dirac operator with potential, the index of which is easy to compute. We show how to extend this idea to the equivariant case.
For a proper, cocompact action by a locally compact group of the form $H \times G$, with $H$ compact, we define an $H \times G$-equivariant index of $H$-transversally elliptic operators, which takes values in $KK_*(C^*H, C^*G)$. This simultaneously generalises the Baum--Connes analytic assembly map, Atiyah's index of transversally elliptic operators, and Kawasaki's orbifold index. This index also generalises the assembly map to elliptic operators on orbifolds. In the special case where the manifold in question is a real semisimple Lie group, $G$ is a cocompact lattice and $H$ is a maximal comp…
Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular locally compact group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, such that $M/G$ is compact. Then an equivariant Dirac-type operator $D$ on $M$ under a suitable boundary condition has an equivariant index $\operatorname{index}_G(D)$ in the $K$-theory of the reduced group $C^*$-algebra $C^*_rG$ of $G$. This is a common generalisation of the Baum-Connes analytic assembly map and the (equivariant) Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index. In part I of this series, a numerical index $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$ was defined for an element $g \in G$, in term…
Consider a proper, isometric action by a unimodular locally compact group $G$ on a Riemannian manifold $M$ with boundary, such that $M/G$ is compact. For an equivariant, elliptic operator $D$ on $M$, and an element $g \in G$, we define a numerical index $\operatorname{index}_g(D)$, in terms of a parametrix for $D$ and a trace associated to $g$. We prove an equivariant Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for this index. We first state general analytic conditions under which this theorem holds, and then show that these conditions are satisfied if $g=e$ is the identity element; if $G$ is a finitel…
Equivariant indices have previously been defined in cases where either the group or the orbit space in question is compact. In this paper, we develop an equivariant index without assuming the group or the orbit space to be compact. This allows us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In parts II and III of this series, we will explore some properties and applications of this index.
Let $T$ be the circle group and let $LT$ be its loop group. We formulate and investigate several topological aspects of the $LT$-equivariant index theory for proper $LT$-spaces, where proper $LT$-spaces are infinite-dimensional manifolds equipped with "proper cocompact" $LT$-actions. Concretely, we introduce "$\mathcal{R}KK$-theory for infinite-dimensional manifolds", and by using it, we formulate an infinite-dimensional version of the $KK$-theoretical Poincaré duality homomorphism, and an infinite-dimensional version of the $\mathcal{R}KK$-theory counterpart of the assembly map, for proper $L…
In the first part of this series, we defined an equivariant index without assuming the group acting or the orbit space of the action to be compact. This allowed us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact groups by Braverman. In this paper, we investigate properties and applications of this index. We prove that it has an induction property that can be used to deduce various other properties of the index. In the case of compact orbit spaces, we show how it is related to the analytic assembly map from the Baum-Connes conjecture, and an index used by Mathai and Zhan…
In this paper, for a compact Lie group action,we prove the anomaly formula and the functoriality of the equivariant Bismut-Cheeger eta forms with perturbation operators when the equivariant family index vanishes. In order to prove them, we extend the Melrose-Piazza spectral section and its main properties to the equivariant case and introduce the equivariant version of the Dai-Zhang higher spectral flow for arbitrary dimensional fibers.Using these results, we construct a new analytic model of the equivariant differential K-theory for compact manifolds when the group action has finite stabilize…
Suppose one is given a discrete group G, a cocompact proper G-manifold M, and a G-self-map f of M. Then we introduce the equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is globally defined in terms of cellular chain complexes, and the local equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is locally defined in terms of fixed point data. We prove the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem, which says that these two classes agree. As a special case, we prove an equivariant Poincare-Hopf Theorem, computing the universal equivariant Euler characteristic in terms of the zeros of an equivariant vector field, and …
We will provide a lower bound for the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of an arbitrary proper action in terms of the stratification by orbit types, and an upper bound for proper polar actions in terms of the equivariant Lusternik-Schnirelmann category of its generalized Weyl group. As an application we reprove a theorem of Singhof that determines the classical Lusternik-Schnirelmann category for U(n) and SU(n).

We define an equivariant index of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators on possibly noncompact manifolds, acted on by compact, connected Lie groups. The main result in this paper is that the index decomposes into irreducible representations according to the quantisation commutes with reduction principle.
In this note, we study equivariant versions of Stolz' $R$-groups, the positive scalar curvature structure groups $R^{\rm spin}_n(X)^G$, for proper actions of discrete groups $G$. We define the concept of a fundamental groupoid functor for a $G$-space, encapsulating all the fundamental group information of all the fixed point sets and their relations. We construct classifying spaces for fundamental groupoid functors. As a geometric result, we show that Stolz' equivariant $R$-group $R^{\rm spin}_n(X)^G$ depends only on the fundamental groupoid functor of the reference space $X$. The proof covers…
Lin and Sjamaar have used symplectic Hodge theory to obtain canonical equivariant extensions for Hamiltonian actions on closed symplectic manifolds that have the strong Lefschetz property. Here we obtain canonical equivariant extensions much more generally by means of classical Hodge theory.
For covering spaces and properly discontinuous actions with compatible diffusion operators, we discuss Lyons-Sullivan discretizations of the associated diffusions and harmonic functions of bounded growth.
We establish that for any proper action of a Lie group on a manifold the associated equivariant differentiable cohomology groups with coefficients in modules of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-functions vanish in all degrees except than zero. Furthermore let $G$ be a Lie group of $CR$-automorphisms of a strictly pseudo-convex $CR$-manifold $M$. We associate to $G$ a canonical class in the first differential cohomology of $G$ with coefficients in the $\mathcal{C}^\infty$-functions on $M$. This class is non-zero if and only if $G$ is essential in the sense that there does not exist a $CR$-compatible strict…
We study two special cases of the equivariant index defined in part I of this series. We apply this index to deformations of Spin$^c$-Dirac operators, invariant under actions by possibly noncompact groups, with possibly noncompact orbit spaces. One special case is an index defined in terms of multiplicities of discrete series representations of semisimple groups, where we assume the Riemannian metric to have a certain product form. The other is an index defined in terms of sections invariant under a group action. We obtain a relation with the analytic assembly map, quantisation commutes with r…
Let G be a compact Lie group and X be a compact smooth G-manifold with finitely many G-fixed points. We show that if X admits a G-equivariant hyperbolic diffeomorphism having a certain convergence property, there exists an open covering of X indexed by the G-fixed points so that each open set is G-stable and G-equivariantly diffeomorphic to the tangential G-representation at the corresponding G-fixed point. We also show that the converse is also true in case of holomorphic torus actions
We study Cohen-Macaulay actions, a class of torus actions on manifolds, possibly without fixed points, which generalizes and has analogous properties as equivariantly formal actions. Their equivariant cohomology algebras are computable in the sense that a Chang-Skjelbred Lemma, and its stronger version, the exactness of an Atiyah-Bredon sequence, hold. The main difference is that the fixed point set is replaced by the union of lowest dimensional orbits. We find sufficient conditions for the Cohen-Macaulay property such as the existence of an invariant Morse-Bott function whose critical set is …
