We obtain an equivariant index theorem, or Lefschetz fixed-point formula, for isometries from complete Riemannian manifolds to themselves. The fixed-point set of such an isometry may be noncompact. We build on techniques developed by Roe. Key new ingredients are a localised functional on operators with bounded smooth kernels, and an algebra (reminiscent of Yu's localisation algebra) of `asymptotically local' operators, on which this functional has an asymptotic trace property. As consequences, we show that some earlier indices used are special cases of the one we introduce here, and obtain an obstruction to positive scalar curvature.
We study a class of localized indices for the Dirac type operators on a complete Riemannian orbifold, where a discrete group acts properly, co-compactly and isometrically. These localized indices, generalizing the $L^2$-index of Atiyah, are obtained by taking certain traces of the higher index for the Dirac type operators along conjugacy classes of the discrete group. Applying the local index technique, we also obtain an $L^2$-version of the Lefschetz fixed point formula for orbifolds. These cohomological formulae for the localized indices give rise to a class of refined topological invariants…
We consider the action of a noncompact torus H on the compact quotient G/L, where G is a Lie group containing H and L is a uniform lattice in G. Using harmonic analysis on G we prove a formula relating the compact orbits of H to the action of H on the (infinite dimensional) tangential cohomology. The formula may be viewed as a Lefschetz formula or an equivariant index theorem for noncompact group actions.
The purpose of this article is to present a "Groupoid proof" to the Lefschetz fixed point formula for elliptic complexes. We shall define a "relative version" of tangent groupoid, describe the corresponding pseudodifferential calculi and explain the relation with the Lefschetz fixed point formula.
We formulate a conjectural Lefschetz formula for locally symmetric spaces of finite volume. The formula can be verified in the compact case and for Riemann surfaces.
We calculate the Hirzebruch $χ_y$ and $\hatχ_y$-genera of symmetric products of closed complex manifolds by the holomorphic Lefschetz formula of Atiyah and Singer \cite{Ati-Sin}. Such calculation rederive some formulas proved in an earlier paper \cite{Zho} by a different method.
For the geodesic flow of an odd dimensional hyperbolic manifold we prove a Lefschetz type formula. The local terms are Fuller indices of the closed orbits. The global "Frobenius operator" is the generator of the flow and its action on tangential cohomology.
We generalise the Atiyah-Segal-Singer fixed point theorem to noncompact manifolds. Using $KK$-theory, we extend the equivariant index to the noncompact setting, and obtain a fixed point formula for it. The fixed point formula is the explicit cohomological expression from Atiyah-Segal-Singer's result. In the noncompact case, however, we show in examples that this expression yields characters of infinite-dimensional representations. In one example, we realise characters of discrete series representations on the regular elements of a maximal torus, in terms of the index we define. Further results…
In [8] the authors introduced a pair of new de Rham complexes on a compact oriented Riemannian manifold with boundary by using a pair of new boundary conditions to discuss the refined analytic torsion on a compact manifold with boundary. In this paper we discuss the Lefschetz fixed point formula on these complexes with respect to a smooth map having simple fixed points and satisfying some special condition near the boundary. For this purpose we are going to use the heat kernel method for the Lefschetz fixed point formula.
This is the second of a series of papers dealing with an analog in Arakelov geometry of the holomorphic Lefschetz fixed point formula. We use the main result of the first paper to prove a residue formula "`a la Bott" for arithmetic characteristic classes living on arithmetic varieties acted upon by a diagonalisable torus; recent results of Bismut-Goette on the equivariant (Ray-Singer) analytic torsion play a key role in the proof.
We give a new proof of the Jantzen sum formula for integral representations of Chevalley schemes over Spec Z. This is done by applying the fixed point formula of Lefschetz type in Arakelov geometry to generalized flag varieties. Our proof involves the computation of the equivariant Ray-Singer torsion for all equivariant bundles over complex homogeneous spaces. Furthermore, we find several explicit formulae for the global height of any generalized flag variety.
Mathai-Quillen forms are used to give an integral formula for the Lefschetz number of a smooth map of a closed manifold. Applied to the identity map, this formula reduces to the Chern-Gauss-Bonnet theorem. The formula is computed explicitly for constant curvature metrics. There is in fact a one-parameter family of integral expressions. As the parameter goes to infinity, a topological version of the heat equation proof of the Lefschetz fixed submanifold formula is obtained. As the parameter goes to zero and under a transversality assumption, a lower bound for the number of points mapped into th…
We give a new proof of a slightly weaker form of a theorem of P. Colmez. This theorem gives a formula for the Faltings height of abelian varieties with complex multiplication by a C.M. field whose Galois group over $\bf Q$ is abelian; it reduces to the formula of Chowla and Selberg in the case of elliptic curves. We show that the formula can be deduced from the arithmetic fixed point formula proved in the first paper of the series. Our proof is intrinsic in the sense that it does not rely on the computation of the periods of any particular abelian variety.
We develop an analytic framework for Lefschetz fixed point theory and Morse theory for Hilbert complexes on stratified pseudomanifolds. We develop formulas for both global and local Lefschetz numbers and Morse, Poincaré polynomials as (polynomial) supertraces over cohomology groups of Hilbert complexes, developing techniques for relating local and global quantities using heat kernel and Witten deformation based methods. We focus on the case where the metric is wedge and the Hilbert complex is associated to a Dirac-type operator and satisfies the Witt condition, constructing Lefschetz versions …
We obtain new general results on the structure of the space of translation invariant continuous valuations on convex sets (a version of the hard Lefschetz theorem). Using these and our previous results we obtain explicit characterization of unitarily invariant translation invariant continuous valuations. It implies new integral geometric formulas for real submanifolds in Hermitian spaces generalizing the classical kinematic formulas in Euclidean spaces due to Poincaré, Chern, Santaló, and others.
In this paper, we introduce a monotonicity formula for the mean curvature flow which is related to self-expanders. Then we use the monotonicity to study the asymptotic behavior of Type III mean curvature flow on noncompact hypersurfaces.
We give an asymptotic probabilistic real Riemann-Hurwitz formula computing the expected real ramification index of a random covering over the Riemann sphere. More generally, we study the asymptotic expected number and distribution of critical points of a random real Lefschetz pencil over a smooth real algebraic variety.
We study the properties of the multiplicative structure on valuations on convex sets. We prove a new version of the hard Lefschetz theorem for even translation invariant continuous valuations, and discuss related problems of integral geometry. Then we formulate a conjectural analogue of this result for odd valuations.
We compute the formal Poisson cohomology of a broken Lefschetz fibration by calculating it at fold and Lefschetz singularities. Near a fold singularity the computation reduces to that for a point singularity in 3 dimensions. For the Poisson cohomology around singular points we adapt techniques developed for the Sklyanin algebra. As a side result, we give compact formulas for the Poisson coboundary operator of an arbitrary Jacobian Poisson structure in 4 dimensions.
In his approach to analytic number theory C. Deninger has suggested that to the Riemann zeta function $\hatζ(s)$ (resp. the zeta function $ζ_Y(s)$ of a smooth projective curve $Y$ over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, $q=p^f$)) one could possibly associate a foliated Riemannian laminated space $(S_{\mathbb{Q}}, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$ (resp. $(S_Y, \mathcal{F}, g, ϕ^t)$) endowed with an action of a flow $ϕ^t$ whose primitive compact orbits should correspond to the primes of $\mathbb{Q}$ (resp. $Y$). The existence of such a foliated space and flow $ϕ^t$ is still unknown except when $Y$ is an ellipt…
We obtain a family of matrix integrals which decompose to a product of Gamma-functions (they have some relations with S.G.Gindikin 'Beta', but generally speaking essentially differ from it). We obtain Plancherel formula for Berezin representations for all series of classical groups (for large values of parameters of representations). The Berezin representations are deformations of L^2 on Riemann noncompact symmetric spaces G/K defined by Berezin kernels, i.e powers of |det(1-zu^*)| (in matrix ball models). These representations also can be obtained by restrictions of holomorphic representation…
