On complete noncompact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature, Li-Schoen proved the uniform Poincare inequality for any ge odesic ball. In this note, we obtain the sharp lower bound of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of such geodesic balls, which implies the sharp Poincare inequality for geodesic balls.
In hyperbolic space $H^n$ we set a geodesic ball of radius $ρ$. Consider a $k$ dimensional minimal submanifold passing through the origin of the geodesic ball with boundary lies on the boundary of that geodesic ball. We prove that its area is no less than the totally geodesic $k$ dimensional submanifold passing through the origin in that geodesic ball. This is a partial generalization of the corresponding problem in $R^n$.
We study the eigenvalue problem for the Riemannian Pucci operator on geodesic balls. We establish upper and lower bounds for the principal Pucci eigenvalues depending on the curvature, extending Cheng's eigenvalue comparison theorem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator. For manifolds with bounded sectional curvature, we prove Cheng's bounds hold for Pucci eigenvalues on geodesic balls of radius less than the injectivity radius. For manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, we prove Cheng's upper bound holds for Pucci eigenvalues on certain small geodesic balls. We also prove that the principa…
We extend to higher dimensions earlier sharp bounds for the area of two dimensional free boundary minimal surfaces contained in a geodesic ball of the round sphere. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean case.
We determine the Christoffel's symbols for the Siegel-Jacobi ball endowed with the balanced metric. We study the equations of geodesics on the Siegel-Jacobi ball. We calculate the covariant derivative of one-forms in the variables in which is expressed the balanced metric on the Siegel-Jacobi ball.
Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with o…
In constant curvatures spaces, there are a lot of characterizations of geodesic balls as optimal domain for shape optimization problems. Although it is natural to expect similar characterizations in rank one symmetric spaces, very few is known in this setting. In this paper we prove that, in a non-compact rank one symmetric space, the geodesic balls uniquely maximize the first Steklov eigenvalue among the domains of fixed volume, extending to this context a result of Brock in the Euclidean space. Then we show that a stability version of the ensuing Brock-Weinstock inequality holds. The idea be…
We obtain asymptotics of sequences of the holomorphic sections of the pluricanonical bundles on ball quotients associated to closed geodesics. A nonvanishing result follows.
We study the geodesic equation for the Dirichlet (gradient) metric in the space of Kaehler potentials. We first solve the initial value problem for the geodesic equation of the combination metric, including the gradient metric. We then discuss a comparison theorem between it and the Calabi metric. As geometric motivation of the combination metric, we find that the Ebin metric restricted to the space of type II deformations of a Sasakian structure is the sum of the Calabi metric and the gradient metric.
In this paper we provide a pinching condition for the characterization of the totally geodesic disk and the rotational annulus among minimal surfaces with free boundary in geodesic balls of three-dimensional hyperbolic space and hemisphere. The pinching condition involves the length of the second fundamental form, the support function of the surface, and a natural potential function in hyperbolic space and hemisphere.
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
In a Riemannian manifold, it is well known that the scalar curvature at a point can be recovered from the volumes (areas) of small geodesic balls (spheres). We show the scalar curvature is likewise determined by the relative capacities of concentric small geodesic balls. This result has motivation from general relativity (as a complement to a previous study by the author of the capacity of large balls in an asymptotically flat manifold) and from weak definitions of nonnegative scalar curvature. It also motivates a conjecture (inspired by the famous volume conjecture of Gray and Vanhecke), rega…
The purpose of this note is to provide some volume estimates for Einstein warped products similar to a classical result due to Calabi and Yau for complete Riemannian manifolds with nonnegative Ricci curvature. To do so, we make use of the approach of quasi-Einstein manifolds which is directly related to Einstein warped product. In particular, we present an obstruction for the existence of such a class of manifolds.
We consider a shape optimization problem for the first mixed Steklov-Dirichlet eigenvalues of domains bounded by two balls in two-point homogeneous space. We give a geometric proof which is motivated by Newton's shell theorem
We make systematic developments on Lawson-Osserman constructions relating to the Dirichlet problem (over unit disks) for minimal surfaces of high codimension in their 1977 Acta paper. In particular, we show the existence of boundary functions for which infinitely many analytic solutions and at least one nonsmooth Lipschitz solution exist simultaneously. This newly-discovered amusing phenomenon enriches the understanding on the Lawson-Osserman philosophy.

In this article, based on two case studies, we discuss the role of abnormal geodesics in planar Zermelo navigation problems. Such curves are limit curves of the accessibility set, in the domain where the current is strong. The problem is set in the frame of geometric time optimal control, where the control is the heading angle of the ship and in this context, abnormal curves are shown to separate time minimal curves from time maximal curves and are both small-time minimizing and maximizing. We describe the small-time minimal balls. For bigger time, a cusp singularity can occur in the abnormal …
We study weak geodesics in the space of potentials for the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation. The geodesic equation can be formulated as a degenerate elliptic equation, allowing us to employ nonlinear Dirichlet duality theory, as developed by Harvey-Lawson. By exploiting the convexity of the level sets of the Lagrangian angle operator in the highest branch, we are able to construct continuous solutions of the associated Dirichlet problem.
In this work we study the issue of geodesic extendibility on complete and locally compact metric length spaces. We focus on the geometric structure of the space $(Σ(X),d_H)$ of compact balls endowed with the Hausdorff distance and give an explicit isometry between $(Σ(X),d_H)$ and the closed half-space $ X\times \mathbb{R}_{\ge 0}$ endowed with a taxicab metric. Among the applications we establish a group isometry between $\mbox{Iso} (X,d)$ and $\mbox{Iso} (Σ(X),d_H)$ when $(X,d)$ is a Hadamard space.
We prove explicit upper and lower bounds for the Poisson hierarchy, the averaged $L^1$-moment spectra $\{\dfrac{\mathcal{A}_k\left(B_R^M\right)}{\text{vol}\left(S_R^M\right)}\}_{k=1}^\infty$, and the torsional rigidity $\mathcal{A}_1(B^M_R)$ of a geodesic ball $B^M_R$ in a Riemannian manifold $M^n$ which satisfies that the mean curvatures of the geodesic spheres $S^M_r$ included in it, (up to the boundary $S^M_R$), are controlled by the radial mean curvature of the geodesic spheres $S^ω_r(o_ω)$ with same radius centered at the center $o_ω$ of a rotationally symmetric model space $M^n_ω$. As a …
We prove that the area of a free boundary minimal surface $Σ^2 \subset B^n$, where $B^n$ is a geodesic ball contained in a round hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^n_+$, is at least as big as that of a geodesic disk with the same radius as $B^n$; equality is attained only if $Σ$ coincides with such a disk. More generally, we prove analogous results for a class of conformally euclidean ambient spaces. This follows work of Brendle and Fraser-Schoen in the euclidean setting.
In this paper we prove the existence of a solution to the Dirichlet problem for harmonic maps into a geodesic ball on which the squared distance function from the origin is strictly convex. This improves a celebrated theorem obtained by S. Hildebrandt, H. Kaul and K. Widman in 1977. In particular no curvature assumptions on the target are required. Our proof relies on a careful analysis of the Sobolev spaces of maps involved in the variational process, and on a deformation result which permits to glue a suitable Euclidean end to the geodesic ball.
A consequence of the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem states that for any open manifold $(M,x)$ of nonnegative Ricci curvature, if all the minimal geodesic loops at $x$ that represent elements of $π_1(M,x)$ are contained in a bounded ball, then $π_1(M,x)$ is virtually abelian. We generalize the above result: if these minimal representing geodesic loops of $π_1(M,x)$ escape from any bounded metric balls at a sublinear rate with respect to their lengths, then $π_1(M,x)$ is virtually abelian.
In this paper we prove a sub-Riemannian version of the classical Santaló formula: a result in integral geometry that describes the intrinsic Liouville measure on the unit cotangent bundle in terms of the geodesic flow. Our construction works under quite general assumptions, satisfied by any sub-Riemannian structure associated with a Riemannian foliation with totally geodesic leaves (e.g. CR and QC manifolds with symmetries), any Carnot group, and some non-equiregular structures such as the Martinet one. A key ingredient is a "reduction procedure" that allows to consider only a simple subset of…
We discover new monotonicity formulae for minimal submanifolds in space forms, which imply the sharp area bound for minimal submanifolds through a prescribed point in a geodesic ball. These monotonicity formulae involve an energy-like integral over sets which are, in general, not geodesic balls. In the Euclidean case, these sets reduce to the moving-centre balls introduced by the second author in [Zhu18].
In real space forms, Fraser and Schoen proved that a free-boundary minimal disk in a geodesic ball is totally geodesic. In this note, we consider free-boundary minimal surfaces $Σ$ (of any genus) in geodesic balls of complex space forms. In $\mathbb{CP}^2$, $\mathbb{C}^2$ and $\mathbb{CH}^2$, we show that if $Σ$ is Lagrangian, then $Σ$ is totally geodesic. In $\mathbb{CP}^n$, $\mathbb{C}^n$ and $\mathbb{CH}^n$ for $n \geq 2$, we show that if $Σ$ has Kähler angle $π/2$, then $Σ$ is superminimal.
We study the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. Our first result is a comparison theorem for the second Robin eigenvalue on geodesic balls in manifolds whose sectional curvatures are bounded from above. Our second result asserts that geodesic balls in nonpositively curved space forms maximize the second Robin eigenvalue among bounded domains of the same volume.
We show that the third eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian in hyperbolic space is maximal for the disjoint union of two geodesic balls, among domains of given volume. This extends a recent result by Bucur and Henrot in Euclidean space, while providing a new proof of a key step in their argument
In Euclidean and Hyperbolic space, and the hemisphere in $S^n$, geodesic balls maximize the gap $λ_2 - λ_1$ of Dirichlet eigenvalues, amoung domains with fixed $λ_1$. We prove an upper bound on $λ_2 - λ_1$ for domains in manifolds with certain curvature bounds. The inequality is sharp on geodesic balls in spaceforms.
We prove that on an essentially non-branching $\mathrm{MCP}(K,N)$ space, if a geodesic ball has a volume lower bound and satisfies some additional geometric conditions, then in a smaller geodesic ball (in a quantified sense) we have an estimate on the isoperimetric constants.
We study the problem of non-existence of totally geodesic complex ball quotients in the open Torelli locus in a moduli space of principally polarized Abelian varieties using analytic techniques.
In the first part of this article we obtain an identity relating the radial spectrum of rotationally invariant geodesic balls and an isoperimetric quotient $\sum 1/λ_{i}^{\rm rad}=\int V(s)/S(s)ds$. We also obtain upper and lower estimates for the series $\sum λ_{i}^{-2}(Ω)$ where $Ω$ is an extrinsic ball of a proper minimal surface of $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. In the second part we show that the first eigenvalue of bounded domains is given by iteration of the Green operator and taking the limit, $λ_{1}(Ω)=\lim_{k\to \infty} \Vert G^k(f)\Vert_{2}/\Vert G^{k+1}(f)\Vert_{2}$ for any function $f>0$. In t…
We show that the degenerate special Lagrangian equation, recently introduced by Rubinstein-Solomon, induces a global equation on every Riemannian manifold, and that for certain associated geometries this equation governs, as it does in the Euclidean setting, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangians. For example, geodesics in the space of positive Lagrangian sections of a smooth Calabi-Yau torus fibration are governed by the Riemannian DSL on the base manifold. We then develop their analytic techniques, specifically modifications of the Dirichlet duality theory of Harvey-Lawson, in the Ri…
In this paper, we consider the Dirichlet problem of a complex Monge-Ampère equation on a ball in $\mathbb C^n$. With $\mathcal C^{1,α}$ (resp. $\mathcal C^{0,α}$) data, we prove an interior $\mathcal C^{1,α}$ (resp. $\mathcal C^{0,α}$) estimate for the solution. These estimates are generalized versions of the Bedford-Taylor interior $\mathcal C^{1,1}$ estimate.
