We obtain lower bounds for the first Laplacian eigenvalues of geodesic balls of spherically symmetric manifolds. These lower bounds are only $C^{0}$ dependent on the metric coefficients.
For $1\leq q \leq n-2$, we provide explicit examples to demonstrate non-compactness of the Neumann operator for the Kohn Laplacian acting on $L^2$ $(0,q)$-forms on the unit ball in $(2n+1)$-dimensional Heisenberg space.
In this article we will explore Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls on spherically symmetric manifolds. We will compare any Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue with the corresponding Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalue on balls in Euclidean space with the same radius. As a special case we will show that the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues on balls with small radius on the sphere are smaller than the corresponding eigenvalues on the Euclidean ball with the same radius. While the opposite is true for the Dirichlet Laplace eigenvalues of hyperbolic spaces.
Let $B_1$ be a ball of radius $r_1$ in $S^n(\Hy^n)$, and let $B_0$ be a smaller ball of radius $r_0$ such that $\bar{B_0}\subset B_1$. For $S^n$ we consider $r_1< π$. Let $u$ be a solution of the problem $-\La u =1$ in $\Om := B_1\setminus \bar{B_0}$ vanishing on the boundary. It is shown that the associated functional $J(\Om)$ is minimal if and only if the balls are concentric. It is also shown that the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of the Laplacian on $\Om$ is maximal if and only if the balls are concentric.
Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with o…
We give lower and upper bounds for the first eigenvalue of geodesic balls in spherically symmetric manifolds. These lower and upper bounds are $C^{0}$-dependent on the metric coefficients. It gives better lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of spherical caps than those from Betz-Camera-Gzyl.
We study the Robin eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on Riemannian manifolds. Our first result is a comparison theorem for the second Robin eigenvalue on geodesic balls in manifolds whose sectional curvatures are bounded from above. Our second result asserts that geodesic balls in nonpositively curved space forms maximize the second Robin eigenvalue among bounded domains of the same volume.
In this paper, we give an estimate of sub-Laplacian of Riemannian distance functions in pseudo-Hermitian geometry which plays a similar role as Laplacian comparison theorem in Riemannian geometry, and deduce a prior horizontal gradient estimate of pseudo-harmonic maps from pseudo-Hermitian manifolds to regular balls of Riemannian manifolds. As an application, Liouville theorem is established under the conditions of nonnegative pseudo-Hermitian Ricci curvature and vanishing pseudo-Hermitian torsion. Moreover, we obtain the existence of pseudo-harmonic maps from complete noncompact pseudo-Hermit…
In this paper, we study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of $p$-Laplacians with Dirichlet boundary condition on graphs. We characterize the first eigenfunction (and the maximum eigenfunction for a bipartite graph) via the sign condition. By the uniqueness of the first eigenfunction of $p$-Laplacian, as $p\to 1,$ we identify the Cheeger constant of a symmetric graph with that of the quotient graph. By this approach, we calculate various Cheeger constants of spherically symmetric graphs.
We show that the third eigenvalue of the Neumann Laplacian in hyperbolic space is maximal for the disjoint union of two geodesic balls, among domains of given volume. This extends a recent result by Bucur and Henrot in Euclidean space, while providing a new proof of a key step in their argument
We consider two eigenvalue problems for Laplacian on some specific doubly connected domain. In particular, we study the following two eigenvalue problems. Let $B_1$ be an open ball in $\mathbb{R}^n$ and $B_0$ be a ball contained in $B_1$. Let $ν$ be the outward unit normal on $\partial B_1$. Then the first eigenvalue of the problem \begin{align*} \begin{array}{rcll} Δu &=& 0 \, &\mbox{ in } \, B_1 \setminus \bar{B}_0 , \\ u &=& 0 \, &\mbox{ on } \, {\partial B_0}, \\ \frac{\partial u}{\partial ν} &=& τ\, u \, &\mbox{ on } \, {\partial B_1}, \end{array} \end{align*} attains maximum if and only …
We obtain upper estimates for the bottom (that is, greatest lower bound) of the essential spectrum of weighted Laplacian operator of a weighted manifold under assumptions of the volume growth of their geodesic balls and spheres. Furthermore, we find examples where the equality occurs in the estimates obtained. As a consequence, we give estimates for the weighted mean curvature of complete noncompact hypersurfaces into weighted manifolds.
For geometrically finite hyperbolic manifolds $Γ\backslash H^{n+1}$, we prove the meromorphic extension of the resolvent of Laplacian, Poincaré series, Einsenstein series and scattering operator to the whole complex plane. We also deduce the asymptotics of lattice points of $Γ$ in large balls of $H^{n+1}$ in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of $Γ$.
In this paper, we successfully generalize the eigenvalue comparison theorem for the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian ($1<p<\infty$) obtained by Matei [A.-M. Matei, First eigenvalue for the $p$-Laplace operator, Nonlinear Anal. TMA 39 (8) (2000) 1051--1068] and Takeuchi [H. Takeuchi, On the first eigenvalue of the $p$-Laplacian in a Riemannian manifold, Tokyo J. Math. 21 (1998) 135--140], respectively. Moreover, we use this generalized eigenvalue comparison theorem to get estimates for the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet $p$-Laplacian of geodesic balls on complete Riemannian manifolds with radial Ricc…
An adapted version of the proof (due to A. Weil) of the well-known de Rham Theorem allows us to compare uniformly the spectrum of the Hodge Laplacian acting on differential forms (on a compact Riemannian manifold) to the spectrum of the combinatorial Laplacian acting on cochains associated to an open cover (made of balls of sufficiently small radius). We exhibit then a lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the combinatorial Laplacian and deduce a lower bound for the first positive eigenvalue of the Hodge Laplacian.
The fluid ball conjecture states that a static perfect fluid space-time is spherically symmetric. In this paper we construct a Robinson's divergence formula for the static perfect fluid space-time. Inspired by this conjecture, a rigidity result for the spatial factor of a static perfect fluid satisfying some boundary conditions is proved, provided that an equation of state holds.

In [4], we gave a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the basic Laplacian acting on basic $1$-forms defined on a compact manifold whose boundary is endowed with a Riemannian flow. In this paper, we extend this result to the case of the first eigenvalue on basic $p$-forms for $p>1$. As in [4], the limiting case allows to characterize the manifold $\mathbb{R} \times B' / Γ$ for some group $Γ$, and where $B'$ denotes the unit closed ball. In particular, we describe the Riemannian product $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathbb{S}^n$ as the boundary of a manifold.
We consider the Laplacian with attractive Robin boundary conditions, \[ Q^Ω_αu=-Δu, \quad \dfrac{\partial u}{\partial n}=αu \text{ on } \partialΩ, \] in a class of bounded smooth domains $Ω\in\mathbb{R}^ν$; here $n$ is the outward unit normal and $α>0$ is a constant. We show that for each $j\in\mathbb{N}$ and $α\to+\infty$, the $j$th eigenvalue $E_j(Q^Ω_α)$ has the asymptotics \[ E_j(Q^Ω_α)=-α^2 -(ν-1)H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)\,α+{\mathcal O}(α^{2/3}), \] where $H_\mathrm{max}(Ω)$ is the maximum mean curvature at $\partial Ω$. The discussion of the reverse Faber-Krahn inequality gives rise to a new ge…
In this paper, we give a sharp lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the basic Laplacian acting on basic $1$-forms defined on a compact manifold whose boundary is endowed with a Riemannian flow. The limiting case gives rise to a particular geometry of the flow and the boundary. Namely, the flow is a local product and the boundary is $η$-umbilical. This allows to characterize the quotient of $\mathbb R\times B'$ by some group $Γ$ as being the limiting manifold. Here $B'$ denotes the unit closed ball. Finally, we deduce several rigidity results describing the product $\mathbb{S}^1\times \mathb…
We prove Cheeger inequalities for p-Laplacians on finite and infinite weighted graphs. Unlike in previous works, we do not impose boundedness of the vertex degree, nor do we restrict ourselves to the normalized Laplacian and, more generally, we do not impose any boundedness assumption on the geometry. This is achieved by a novel definition of the measure of the boundary which is using the idea of intrinsic metrics. For the non-normalized case, our bounds on the spectral gap of p-Laplacians are already significantly better for finite graphs and for infinite graphs they yield non-trivial bounds …
We study curvature dimension inequalities for the sub-Laplacian on contact Riemannian manifolds. This new curvature dimension condition is then used to obtain: 1) Geometric conditions ensuring the compactness of the underlying manifold (Bonnet-Myers type results); 2) Volume estimates of metric balls; 3) Gradient bounds and stochastic completeness for the heat semigroup generated by the sub-Laplacian; 4) Spectral gap estimates.
