The tangent bundle as a $4n$-manifold is equipped with an almost hypercomplex pseudo-Hermitian structure and it is characterized with respect to the relevant classifications. A number of 8-dimensional examples of the considered type of manifold are received from the known explicit examples in that manner.
The tangent bundle of an almost Norden manifold and the complete lift of the Norden metric is considered as a 4n-manifold. It is equipped with an almost hypercomplex Hermitian-Norden structure. It is characterized geometrically. The case when the base manifold is an h-sphere is considered.
In this article, we introduce some metallic structures on the tangent bundle of a P-Sasakian manifold by complete lift, horizontal lift and vertical lift of a P-Sasakian structure $(ϕ, η,ξ)$ on tangent bundle. Then we investigate the integrability and parallelity of these metallic structures.
Let $(M_{2k},φ,g)$ be an almost anti-paraHermitian manifold and $(TM,g_{BS})$ be its tangent bundle with a Berger type deformed Sasaki metric $g_{BS}$. In this paper, we deal with the harmonicity of the canonical projection $π:TM\rightarrow M$ and a vector field $ξ$ which is considered as a map $ξ:M\rightarrow TM$.
A positive answer is given to the existence of Sasakian structures on the tangent sphere bundle of some Riemannian manifold whose sectional curvature is not constant. Among other results, it is proved that the tangent sphere bundle Tr(G/K), for any r > 0, of a compact rank-one symmetric space G/K, not necessarily of constant sectional curvature, admits a unique K-contact structure whose characteristic vector field is the standard field of T(G/K). Such a structure is in fact Sasakian and it can be expressed as an induced structure from an almost Hermitian structure on the punctured tangent bund…
We define a class of metrics that extend the Sasaki metric of a tangent manifold of a Riemannian manifold. The new metrics are obtained by the transfer of the generalized (pseudo-)Riemannian metrics of the pullback of the big tangent bundle of a manifold to the tangent manifold. We obtain the expression of the transferred metric and we define a canonical, metric connection with torsion. We calculate the torsion, curvature and Ricci curvature of this connection and give a few applications of the results. We also discuss the transfer of generalized complex and generalized Kaehler structures.
Unit tangent bundles $UM$ of semi-Riemannian manifolds $M$ are shown to be examples of dynamical Legendrian contact structures, which were defined in recent work [25] of Sykes-Zelenko to generalize leaf spaces of 2-nondegenerate CR manifolds. In doing so, Sykes-Zelenko extended the classification in Porter-Zelenko [20] of regular, 2-nondegenerate CR structures to those that can be recovered from their leaf space. The present paper treats dynamical Legendrian contact structures associated with 2-nondegenerate CR structures which were called "strongly regular" in Porter-Zelenko, named "L-contact…
We prove that the horizontal and vertical distributions of the tangent bundle with the Sasaki metric are isocline, the distributions given by the kernels of the horizontal and vertical lifts of the contact form $ω$ from the Heisenberg manifold $(H_3,g)$ to $(TH_3,g^S)$ are not totally geodesic, and the distributions $F^H=L(E_1^H,E_2^H)$ and $F^V=L(E_1^V,E_2^V)$ are totally geodesic, but they are not isocline. We obtain that the horizontal and natural lifts of the curves from the Heisenberg manifold $(H_3,g)$, are geodesics in the tangent bundle endowed with the Sasaki metric $(TH_3,g^s)$, if a…
This is the content of a talk given by the author at the 2009 Lehigh University Geometry/Topology Conference. Using the definition of connection given by Dieudonné, the Sasaki metric on the tangent bundle to a Riemannian manifold is expressed in a natural way. Also, the following property is established. The induced metric on the tangent bundle of an isometrically embedded submanifold is the Sasaki metric if and only if the submanifold is totally geodesic.
Tubular neighborhoods play an important role in differential topology. We have applied these constructions to geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. At first, we consider deformations of tensor structures on a normal tubular neighborhood of a submanifold in a Riemannian manifold.Further, an almost hyperHermitian structure has been constructed on the tangent bundle TM with help of the Riemannian connection of an almost Hermitian structure on a manifold M then, we consider an embedding of the almost Hermitian manifold M in the corresponding normal tubular neighborhood of the null section in the…
We survey on the geometry of the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold, endowed with the classical metric established by S. Sasaki 60 years ago. Following the results of Sasaki, we try to write and deduce them by different means. Questions of vector fields, mainly those arising from the base, are related as invariants of the classical metric, contact and Hermitian structures. Attention is given to the natural notion of extension or complete lift of a vector field, from the base to the tangent manifold. Few results are original, but finally new equations of the mirror map are considered.
We introduce the notion of abelian almost contact structures on an odd dimensional real Lie algebra $\mathfrak g$. This a sufficient condition for the structure to be normal. We investigate correspondences with even dimensional real Lie algebras endowed with an abelian complex structure, and with Kähler Lie algebras when $\mathfrak g$ carries a compatible inner product. The classification of 5-dimensional Sasakian Lie algebras with abelian structure is obtained. Later, we introduce and study abelian almost 3-contact structures on real Lie algebras of dimension $4n+3$. These are given by triple…
We present a non existence result of complete, Einstein hypersurfaces tangent to the Reeb vector field of a regular Sasakian manifold which fibers onto a complex Stein manifold.
Considering the class G of g-natural metrics on the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold (M, g), it is shown that the flatnees for g is a necessary and sufficient condition of weakly symmetry (recurrent or pseudo-symmetry) of G. In particular, the cases of weakly symmetric Sasakian lift metric studied by Bejan and Crasmareanu and recurrent or pseudo-symmetric Sasakian lift metric studied by Binh and Tamassy are obtained.
An associated Nijenhuis tensor of endomorphisms in the tangent bundle is introduced. Special attention is paid to such tensors for an almost hypercomplex structure and the metric of Hermitian-Norden type. There are studied relations between the six associated Nijenhuis tensors as well as their vanishing. It is given a geometric interpretation of the vanishing of these tensors as a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique connection with totally skew-symmetric torsion tensor. Similar idea is used in the paper of T. Friedrich and S. Ivanov in Asian J. Math. (2002) for som…
In $(2n+1)$-dimensional non-Sasakian contact metric manifolds, we consider Legendre curves whose mean curvature vector fields are $\mathcal{C}$-parallel or $\mathcal{C}$-proper in the tangent or normal bundles. We obtain the curvature characterizations of these curves. Moreover, we give some examples of these kinds of curves which satisfy the conditions of our results.
Given a hypercomplex manifold with a rotating vector field (and additional data), we construct a conical hypercomplex manifold. As a consequence, we associate a quaternionic manifold to a hypercomplex manifold of the same dimension with a rotating vector field. This is a generalization of the HK/QK-correspondence. As an application, we show that a quaternionic manifold can be associated to a conical special complex manifold of half its dimension. Furthermore, a projective special complex manifold (with a canonical c-projective structure) associates with a quaternionic manifold. The latter is a…
We propose a special deformation of the Sasaki metric on tangent and unit tangent bundle of a Hermitian locally symmetric manifold. Geodesics of this deformed metric have different projections on a base manifold for tangent or unit tangent bundle cases in contrast to usual Sasaki metric. Nevertheless, the projections of geodesics of the unit tangent bundle still preserve the property to have all geodesic curvatures constant.
In this paper we study a Riemanian metric on the tangent bundle $T(M)$ of a Riemannian manifold $M$ which generalizes Sasaki metric and Cheeger Gromoll metric and a compatible almost complex structure which together with the metric confers to $T(M)$ a structure of locally conformal almost Kählerian manifold. This is the natural generalization of the well known almost Kählerian structure on $T(M)$. We found conditions under which $T(M)$ is almost Kählerian, locally conformal Kählerian or Kählerian or when $T(M)$ has constant sectional curvature or constant scalar curvature. Then we will restric…
Let $(M,g)$ be a Riemannian manifold. When $M$ is compact and the tangent bundle $TM$ is equipped with the Sasaki metric $g^s$, the only vector fields which define harmonic maps from $(M,g)$ to $(TM,g^s)$, are the parallel ones. The Sasaki metric, and other well known Riemannian metrics on $TM$, are particular examples of $g$-natural metrics. We equip $TM$ with an arbitrary Riemannian $g$-natural metric $G$, and investigate the harmonicity of a vector field $V$ of $M$, thought as a map from $(M,g)$ to $(TM,G)$. We then apply this study to the Reeb vector field and, in particular, to Hopf vecto…
For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we determine some curvature properties of a tangent bundle equipped with the rescaled metric. The main aim of this paper is to give explicit formulae for the rescaled metric on $TM$, and investigate the geodesics on the tangent bundle with respect to the rescaled Sasaki metric.
We prove that any non-Sasakian contact metric (κ,μ)-space admits a canonical η-Einstein Sasakian or η-Einstein paraSasakian metric. An explicit expression for the curvature tensor fields of those metrics is given and we find the values of κand μfor which such metrics are Sasaki-Einstein and paraSasaki-Einstein. Conversely, we prove that, under some natural assumptions, a K-contact or K-paracontact manifold foliated by two mutually orthogonal, totally geodesic Legendre foliations admits a contact metric (κ,μ)-structure. Furthermore, we apply the above results to the geometry of tangent sphere b…
In this paper, we prove that the harmonicity of a metric on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold is equivalent to the harmonicity of both its Sasaki (resp. horizontal and complete) lift metric on the tangent bundle and its Sasaki lift metric on the cotangent bundle. Some applications are included.
We show how to lift a Riemannian metric and almost symplectic form on a manifold to a Riemannian structure on a canonically associated supermanifold known as the antitangent or shifted tangent bundle. We view this construction as a generalisation of Sasaki's construction of a Riemannian metric on the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold.
We calculate the integer cohomology ring and stable tangent bundle of a family of compact, 3-Sasakian 7-manifolds constructed by Boyer, Galicki, Mann, and Rees. Previously only the rational cohomology ring was known. The most important part of the cohomology ring is a torsion group that we describe explicitly and whose order we compute. There is a surprising connection with the combinatorics of trees.
Natural metrics provide a way to induce a metric on the tangent bundle from the metric on its base manifold. The most studied type is the Sasaki metric, which applies the base metric separately to the vertical and horizontal components. We study a more general class of metrics which introduces interactions between the vertical and horizontal components, with scalar weights. Additionally, we explicitly clarify how to apply our and other induced metrics on the tangent bundle to vector fields where the vertical component is not constant along the fibers. We give application to the Special Orthogo…
It is well-known that if a curve is a geodesic line of the tangent (sphere) bundle with Sasaki metric of a locally symmetric Riemannian manifold then the projected curve has all its geodesic curvatures constant. In this paper we consider the case of tangent (sphere) bundle over the real, complex and quaternionic space form and give a unified proof of the following property: all geodesic curvatures of projected curve are zero starting from k_3,k_6 and k_{10} for the real, complex and quaternionic space formes respectively.
We discuss conditions for the integrability of an almost complex structure defined on the total space of an induced Hopf S^3-bundle over a Sasakian manifold . As an application, we obtain an uncountable family of inequivalent complex structures on the Stiefel manifolds of orthonormal 2-frames in C^{n+1}, non compatible with its standard hypercomplex structure. Similar families of complex structures are constructed on the Stiefel manifold of oriented orthonormal 4-frames in R^{n+1}, as well as on some special Stiefel manifolds related to the groups G_2 and Spin(7).
We prove a Theorem on homotheties between two given tangent sphere bundles $S_rM$ of a Riemannian manifold $M,g$ of $\dim\geq 3$, assuming different variable radius functions $r$ and weighted Sasaki metrics induced by the conformal class of $g$. New examples are shown of manifolds with constant positive or with constant negative scalar curvature, which are not Einstein. Recalling results on the associated almost complex structure $I^G$ and symplectic structure $ω^G$ on the manifold $TM$, generalizing the well-known structure of Sasaki by admitting weights and connections with torsion, we compu…
We describe a diagram containing the zero sets of the moment maps associated to the diagonal U(1) and Sp(1) actions on the quaternionic projective space HP^n. These sets are related both to focal sets of submanifolds and to Sasakian-Einstein structures on induced Hopf bundles. As an application, we construct a complex structure on the Stiefel manifolds V_2 (C^{n+1}) and V_4 (R^{n+1}), the one on the former manifold not being compatible with its known hypercomplex structure.
The bienergy of a vector field on a Riemannian manifold (M,g) is defined to be the bienergy of the corresponding map (M,g) ---> (TM,g_S), where the tangent bundle TM is equipped with the Sasaki metric g_S. The constrained variational problem is studied, where variations are confined to vector fields, and the corresponding critical point condition characterizes biharmonic vector fields. Furthermore, we prove that if (M,g) is a compact oriented m-dimensional Riemannian manifold and X a tangent vector of M, then X is a biharmonic vector field of (M,g) is and only if X is parallel. Finally, we giv…
We consider hypersurfaces in Einstein-Sasaki 5-manifolds which are tangent to the characteristic vector field. We introduce evolution equations that can be used to reconstruct the 5-dimensional metric from such a hypersurface, analogous to the (nearly) hypo and half-flat evolution equations in higher dimensions. We use these equations to classify Einstein-Sasaki 5-manifolds of cohomogeneity one.
Aguilar introduced isotropic almost complex structures $J_{δ, σ}$ on the tangent bundle of a Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$. In this paper, some results will be obtained on the integrability of these structures. These structures with the Liouville 1-form define a class of Riemannian metrics $g_{δ, σ}$ on $T M$ which are a generalization of the Sasaki metric. Moreover, the notion of a harmonic unit vector field is introduced with respect to these metrics like as the Sasaki metric and the necessary and sufficient conditions for a unit vector field to be a harmonic unit vector field are obtained.
In this paper we study geodesics on adjoint orbits of $SL(n,\mathbb{R})$ equipped with $SO(n)$-invariant metrics (maximal compact subgroup). Our main technique is translate this problem into a geometric problem in the tangent bundle of certain $SO(n)$-flag manifolds and describe the geodesics equations with respect to the Sasaki metric on tangent bundle. We also use tools of Lie Theory in order to obtain some explicit description of families of geodesics. We deal with the case of $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$ in full details.
It is well-known that if $ξ$ is a smooth vector field on a given Riemannian manifold $M^n$ then $ξ$ naturally defines a submanifold $ξ(M^n)$ transverse to the fibers of the tangent bundle $TM^n$ with Sasaki metric. In this paper, we are interested in transverse totally geodesic submanifolds of the tangent bundle. We show that a transverse submanifold $N^l$ of $TM^n$ ($1 \leq l \leq n$) can be realized locally as the image of a submanifold $F^l$ of $M^n$ under some vector field $ξ$ defined along $F^l$. For such images $ξ(F^l)$, the conditions to be totally geodesic are presented. We show that t…
Let $P\to M$ be a principal bundle. Consider a sequence of metrics on $P$ obtained by re-scaling the fibers to points. The Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the tangent bundles over these principal bundles with their Sasaki metric is seen herein to be a locally trivial fiber bundle containing the tangent space to the base as a subbundle in a natural way. Berger 3-spheres provide an example where the limit fibers are still of dimension 3. The fibers are shown to be entirely determined by the riemannian holonomy of the chosen bi-invariant metric.
For the Riemannian manifold $M^{n}$ two special connections on the sum of the tangent bundle $TM^{n}$ and the trivial one-dimensional bundle are constructed. These connections are flat if and only if the space $M^{n}$ has a constant sectional curvature $\pm 1$. The geometric explanation of this property is given. This construction gives a coordinate free many-dimensional generalization of the connection from the paper: R. Sasaki 1979 Soliton equations and pseudospherical surfaces, Nuclear Phys., {\bf 154 B}, pp. 343-357. It is shown that these connections are in close relation with the imbeddi…
We define and study natural $\mathrm{SU}(2)$-structures, in the sense of Conti-Salamon, on the total space $\cal S$ of the tangent sphere bundle of any given oriented Riemannian 3-manifold $M$. We recur to a fundamental exterior differential system of Riemannian geometry. Essentially, two types of structures arise: the contact-hypo and the non-contact and, for each, we study the conditions for being hypo, nearly-hypo or double-hypo. We discover new double-hypo structures on $S^3\times S^2$, of which the well-known Sasaki-Einstein are a particular case. Hyperbolic geometry examples also appear.…
We consider almost Ricci-Yamabe soliton in the context of certain contact metric manifolds. Firstly, we prove that if the metric $g$ admits an almost $(α,β)$-Ricci-Yamabe soliton with $α\neq 0$ and potential vector field collinear with the Reeb vector field $ξ$ on a complete contact metric manifold with the Reeb vector field $ξ$ as an eigenvector of the Ricci operator, then the manifold is compact Einstein Sasakian and the potential vector field is a constant multiple of the Reeb vector field $ξ$. Next, if complete $K$-contact manifold admits gradient Ricci-Yamabe soliton with $α\neq 0$, then …
We say that a distribution is harmonic if it is harmonic when considered as a section of a Grassmann bundle. We find new examples of harmonic distributions and show nonexistense of harmonic distrubutions on some Riemannian manifolds by two different approaches. Firstly, we lift distributions to the second tangent bundle equipped with the Sasaki metric. Secondly, we deform conformally the metric on a base manifold.
Let $(\mathbb{M}_{1}^{2},g)$ be a Minkowski surface and $(T_1\mathbb{M}_1^2, g_1)$ its unit tangent bundle endowed with the pseudo-Riemannian induced Sasaki metric. We extend in this paper the study of the N-Legendre and N-slant curves which the inner product of normal vector and Reeb vector is zero and nonzero constant respectively in $\left( T_1 \mathbb{M}_1^2, g_1 \right)$, given in \cite{hmy}, to the Minkowski context and several important characterizations of these curves are given.\newline
We study the geometrical properties of a unit vector field on a Riemannian 2-manifold, considering the field as a local imbedding of the manifold into its tangent sphere bundle with the Sasaki metric. For the case of constant curvature K, we give a description of the totally geodesic unit vector fields for K=0 and K=1 and prove a non-existence result for K not equal to 0 and 1. We also found a family of vector fields on the hyperbolic 2-plane L^2 of curvature -c^2 which generate foliations on unit tangent bundle over L^2 with leaves of constant intrinsic curvature -c^2 and of constant extrinsi…
The tangent bundle $T^kM$ of order $k$, of a smooth Banach manifold $M$ consists of all equivalent classes of curves that agree up to their accelerations of order $k$. In the previous work of the author he proved that $T^kM$, $1\leq k\leq \infty$, admits a vector bundle structure on $M$ if and only if $M $ is endowed with a linear connection or equivalently a connection map on $T^kM$ is defined. This bundle structure depends heavily on the choice of the connection. In this paper we ask about the extent to which this vector bundle structure remains isomorphic. To this end we define the notion o…
We study natural variations of the G2 structure σ_0 \in Λ^3_+ existing on the unit tangent sphere bundle SM of any oriented Riemannian 4-manifold M. We find a circle of structures for which the induced metric is the usual one, the so-called Sasaki metric, and prove how the original structure has a preferred role in the theory. We deduce the equations of calibration and cocalibration, as well as those of W3 pure type and nearly-parallel type.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold. Equipping its tangent bundle $TM$ (resp. unit tangent bundle $T_1M$) by a pseudo-Riemannian $g$-natural metric $G$ (resp. $\tilde{G}$), we study the biharmonicty of vector fields (resp. unit vector fields) as maps $(M,g) \rightarrow (TM,G)$ (resp. $(M,g) \rightarrow (T_1M,\tilde{G})$) as well as critical points of the bienergy functional restricted to the set $\mathfrak{X}(M)$ (resp. $\mathfrak{X}^1(M)$) of vector fields (resp. unit tangent bundles) on $M$. Contrary to the Sasaki metric on $TM$, where the two notions are equivalent to the harmonici…
The object of study in the present dissertation are some topics in differential geometry of smooth manifolds with additional tensor structures and metrics of Norden type. There are considered four cases depending on the dimension of the manifold: 2n, 2n + 1, 4n and 4n + 3. The studied tensor structures, which are counterparts in the different related dimensions, are the almost complex/contact/hypercomplex structure and the almost contact 3-structure. The considered metric on the 2n-dimensional case is the Norden metric, and the metrics in the other three cases are generated by it. The purpose …
A Riemannian metric on a manifold M induces a family of Riemannian metrics on the loop space LM depending on a Sobolev space parameter s. We compute the connection forms of these metrics and the higher symbols of their curvature forms, which take values in pseudodifferential operators. These calculations are used in a followup paper "The Geometry of Loop Spaces II: Characteristic Classes" to construct Chern-Simons classes on the tangent bundle TLM which detect nontrivial elements in the diffeomorphism group of certain Sasakian 5-manifolds associated to Kaehler surfaces.
A geometry with parallel skew-symmetric torsion is a Riemannian manifold carrying a metric connection with parallel skew-symmetric torsion. Besides the trivial case of the Levi-Civita connection, geometries with non-vanishing parallel skew-symmetric torsion arise naturally in several geometric contexts, e.g. on naturally reductive homogeneous spaces, nearly Kähler or nearly parallel $\mathrm{G}_2$-manifolds, Sasakian and $3$-Sasakian manifolds, or twistor spaces over quaternion-Kähler manifolds with positive scalar curvature. In this paper we study the local structure of Riemannian manifolds c…
An almost contact metric structure is parametrized by a section of an associated homogeneous fibre bundle, and conditions for this to be a harmonic section, and a harmonic map, are studied. These involve the characteristic vector field, and the almost complex structure in the contact subbundle. Several examples are given where the harmonic section equations reduce to those for the characteristic field to be a harmonic section of the unit tangent bundle. These include trans-Sasakian structures, and certain nearly cosymplectic structures. On the other hand, we obtain examples where the character…
We construct examples of compact hyperkaehler manifolds with torsion (HKT manifolds) which are not homogeneous and not locally conformal hyperkaehler. Consider a total space T of a tangent bundle over a hyperkaehler manifold M. The manifold T is hypercomplex, but it is never hyperkaehler, unless M is flat. We show that T admits an HKT-structure. We also prove that a quotient of T by a $\Z$-action $v \arrow q^n v$ is HKT, for any real number $q\in \R$, $q>1$. This quotient is compact, if M is compact. A more general version of this construction holds for all hyperholomorphic bundles with holono…
Let X be a compact Kahler orbifold without \C-codimension-1 singularities. Let D be a suborbifold divisor in X such that D \supset Sing(X) and -pK_X = q[D] for some p, q \in \N with q > p. Assume that D is Fano. We prove the following two main results. (1) If D is Kahler-Einstein, then, applying results from our previous paper, we show that each Kahler class on X\D contains a unique asymptotically conical Ricci-flat Kahler metric, converging to its tangent cone at infinity at a rate of O(r^{-1-ε}) if X is smooth. This provides a definitive version of a theorem of Tian and Yau. (2) We introduce…
