We begin a study of the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. First we compute the Betti numbers of these spaces using Serre polynomial and equivariant Serre polynomial methods developed by E. Getzler and R. Pandharipande. Then, via the excision sequence, we compute an additive basis for their Chow rings in terms of Chow rings of nonlinear Grassmannians, which have been described by Pandharipande. The ring structure of one of these Chow rings is addressed in a sequel to this paper.
The additive invariants of an algebraic variety is calculated in terms of those of the fixed point set under the action of additive and multiplicative groups, by using Bialynicki-Birula's fixed point formula for a projective algebraicset with a G_m-action or G_a-action. The method is also generalized to calculate certain additive invariants for Chow varieties. As applications, we obtain the Hodge polynomial of Chow varieties in characteristic zero and the number of points for Chow varieties over finite fields. As applications, we obtain the l-adic Euler-Poincare characteristic for the Chow var…
The cosimplicial scheme $$Delta^bullet = Δ^0 smallmatrix \to smallmatrix Δ^1 smallmatrix to smallmatrix ...;\quad Δ^n :=\Spec\Big(k[t_0,...c,t_n]/(\sum t_i -t)\Big)$$ was used in B to define higher Chow groups. In this note, we let t tend to 0 and replace Δ^\bullet by a degenerate version $$Q^\bullet = Q^0 smallmatrix to smallmatrix Q^1 smallmatrix to smallmatrix ...;\quad Q^n := \Spec\Big(k[t_0,...c,t_n]/(\sum t_i)\Big) $$ to define an additive version of the higher Chow groups. For a field k, we show the Chow group of 0-cycles on $Q^n$ in this theory is isomorphic to the absolute $(n-1)$-Käh…
We prove moving lemma for additive higher Chow groups of smooth projective varieties. As applications, we prove the very general contravariance property of additive higher Chow groups. Using the moving lemma, we establish the structure of graded-commutative differential graded algebra (CDGA) on these groups.
Over a field of characteristic zero, we introduce two motivic operations on additive higher Chow cycles: analogues of the Connes boundary $B$ operator and the shuffle product on Hochschild complexes. The former allows us to apply the formalism of mixed complexes to additive Chow complexes building a bridge between additive higher Chow theory and additive $K$-theory. The latter induces a wedge product on additive Chow groups for which we show that the Connes operator is a graded derivation for the wedge product using a variation of a Totaro's cycle. Hence, the additive higher Chow groups with t…
We show how to make the additive Chow groups of Bloch-Esnault, Ruelling and Park into a graded module for Bloch's higher Chow groups, in the case of a smooth projective variety over a field. This yields a a projective bundle formula as well as a blow-up formula for the additive Chow groups of a smooth projective variety. In case the base-field admits resolution of singularieties, these properties allow us to apply the technique of Guille'n and Navarro Aznar to define the additive Chow groups "with log poles at infinity" for an arbitrary finite-type k-scheme X. This theory has the usual propert…
We show that the multivariate additive higher Chow groups of a smooth affine $k$-scheme $\Spec (R)$ essentially of finite type over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $\not = 2$ form a differential graded module over the big de Rham-Witt complex $\W_mΩ^{\bullet}_{R}$. In the univariate case, we show that additive higher Chow groups of $\Spec (R)$ form a Witt-complex over $R$. We use these structures to prove an étale descent for multivariate additive higher Chow groups.
As an attempt to understand motives over $k[x]/(x^m)$, we define the cubical additive higher Chow groups with modulus for all dimensions extending the works of S. Bloch, H. Esnault and K. Rülling on 0-dimensional cycles. We give an explicit construction of regulator maps on the groups of 1-cycles with an aid of the residue theory of A. Parshin and V. Lomadze.
Bloch and Esnault defined additive higher Chow groups with modulus (m+1) on the level of zero cycles over a field k, denoted by TH^n(k,n;m), n,m >0. They prove that TH^n(k,n;1) is isomorphic to the group of absolute Kaehler differentials of degree n-1 over k. In this paper we generalize their result and show that TH^n(k,n;m) is isomorphic to W_mΩ^{n-1}_k, the group of degree n-1 elements in the generalized de Rham-Witt of length m over k. This complex was defined by Hesselholt and Madsen and generalizes the p-typical de Rham-Witt complex of Bloch-Deligne-Illusie. Before we can prove this theor…
We determine the Chow ring of the stack of truncated displays and more generally the Chow ring of the stack of G-zips. We also investigate the pull-back morphism of the truncated display functor. From this we can determine the Chow ring of the stack of truncated Barsotti-Tate groups over a field of characteristic p up to p-torsion.
We describe the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space of stable maps with marked points Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) as the subring of invariants of a ring B, relative to the action of the group of symmetries of d elements. B is computed by following a sequence of intermediate spaces for Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) and relating them to substrata of Mbar_{0,1}(n,d+m-1). An additive basis for the Chow ring is presented.
We compute the Chow ring of an arbitrary heavy/light Hassett space $\bar{M}_{0, w}$. These spaces are moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable rational curves, where the associated weight vector $w$ consists of only heavy and light weights. Work of Cavalieri et al. exhibits these spaces as tropical compactifications of hyperplane arrangement complements. The computation of the Chow ring then reduces to intersection theory on the toric variety of the Bergman fan of a graphic matroid. Keel has calculated the Chow ring $A^*(\bar{M}_{0, n})$ of the moduli space $\bar{M}_{0, n}$ of stable nodal $n$…
We show that the moduli space of stable n-pointed rational curves can be flatly degenerated to a projective toric variety. We arrive at this by showing that the Chow quotients of the Grassmannians admit toric degenerations, which in turn, follows from a theorem that we prove for toric degenerations of more general Chow quotients. Along the way, we also argued that GIT quotient of a flat family is again flat. In particular, all GIT quotients of flag varieties by maximal tori can be flatly degenerated to projective toric varieties ([9] and [12]).
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the intersection theory of the moduli spaces of stable maps of degree two from two-pointed, genus zero nodal curves to arbitrary-dimensional projective space. Toward this end, first the Betti numbers of \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^r,2) are computed using Serre polynomials and equivariant Serre polynomials. Then, specializing to the space \bar{M}_{0,2}(P^1,2), generators and relations for the Chow ring are given. Chow rings of simpler spaces are also described, and the method of localization and linear algebra is developed. Both tools are used in finding the rel…
We give a presentation for the Chow ring of the moduli space of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to P^1. Also, integrals of of all degree four monomials in the hyperplane pullbacks and boundary divisors of this ring are computed using equivariant intersection theory. Finally, the presentation is used to give a new computation of the (previously known) values of the genus zero, degree two, two-pointed gravitational correlators of P^1. This article is a sequel to math.AG/0501322, although the only information truly needed from that article is the Poincare polynomial of the…
We prove that the Chow motive with integral coefficient of a geometrically rational surfaces~$S$ over a perfect field~$k$ is zero dimensional if and only if the Picard group of~$\bar{k}\times_{k}S$, where~$\bar{k}$ is an algebraic closure of~$k$, is a direct summand of a $\Gal (\bar{k}/k)$-permutation module, and~$S$ possesses a zero cycle of degree one. As shown by Colliot-Thélène in a letter to the author (which we have reproduced in the appendix) this is in turn equivalent to~$S$ having a zero cycle of degree~$1$ and $\CH_{0}(k(S)\times_{k}S)$ being torsion free.
We continue the study of the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves begun in [arXiv:2012.09887v2]. In genus $0$, we show that the Chow ring of $\mathfrak{M}_{0,n}$ coincides with the tautological ring and give a complete description in terms of (additive) generators and relations. This generalizes earlier results by Keel and Kontsevich-Manin for the spaces of stable curves. Our argument uses the boundary stratification of the moduli stack together with the study of the first higher Chow groups of the strata, in particular providing a new proof of the results of …
In this paper we calculate the ring of unstable (possibly non-additive) operations from algebraic Morava K-theory K(n) to Chow groups with $\mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$-coefficients. More precisely, we prove that it is a formal power series ring on generators $c_i:K(n)\rightarrow CH^i \otimes \mathbb{Z}_{(p)}$, which satisfy a Cartan-type formula.
We investigate the integral cohomology ring and the Chow ring of the classifying space of the complex projective linear group PGL_p, when p is an odd prime. In particular, we determine its additive structure completely, and we reduce the problem of determing its multiplicative structure to a problem in invariant theory.
We consider free algebraic actions of the additive group of complex numbers on a complex vector space X embedded in the complex projective space. We find an explicit formula for the map p that assigns to a generic point x in X the Chow point of the closure of the orbit through x. The properties Hausdorff quotient topology and proper action are equivalently characterized by the closure of the image of p in the closed Chow variety.
We construct a cycle class map from the higher Chow groups of 0-cycles to the relative $K$-theory of a modulus pair. We show that this induces a pro-isomorphism between the additive higher Chow groups of relative 0-cycles and relative $K$-theory of truncated polynomial rings over a regular semi-local ring, essentially of finite type over a characteristic zero field.
The space of n distinct points and a disjoint parameterized hyperplane in projective d-space up to projectivity---equivalently, configurations of n distinct points in affine d-space up to translation and homothety---has a beautiful compactification introduced by Chen-Gibney-Krashen. This variety, constructed inductively using the apparatus of Fulton-MacPherson configuration spaces, is a parameter space of certain pointed rational varieties whose dual intersection complex is a rooted tree. This generalizes $\overline{M}_{0,n}$ and shares many properties with it. In this paper, we prove that the…
The Chow group of zero cycles in the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero is isomorphic to the integer additive group. Let $M$ be monomial in this Chow group. If no two factors of $M$ fulfill a particular quadratic relation, then the monomial can be represented equivalently by a specific tree; otherwise, $M$ is mapped to zero under the stated isomorphism. Starting from this tree representation, we introduce a graphical algorithm for computing the corresponding integer for $M$ under the aforementioned isomorphism. The algorithm is linear with respect to the size of the tree.
The moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ of weighted pointed stable curves of genus zero is stratified according to the degeneration types of such curves. We show that the homology groups of the moduli space $\bar{M}_A$ are generated by the strata of $\bar{M}_A$ and give all additive relations between them. We also observe that the Chow groups $A_i \bar{M}_A$ and the homology groups $H_{2i} \bar{M}_A$ are isomorphic. This generalizes Kontsevich-Manin's and Losev-Manin's theorems to arbitrary weight data $A$.
Let $\bar{X}$ be a smooth quasi-projective $d$-dimensional variety over a field $k$ and let $D$ be an effective Cartier divisor on it. In this note, we construct cycle class maps from (a variant of) the higher Chow group with modulus of the pair $(\bar{X},D)$ in the range $(d+n, n)$ to the relative $K$-groups $K_n(\bar{X}, D)$ for every $n\geq 0$.
We introduce a smooth projective variety $T_{d,n}$ which compactifies the space of configurations of $n$ distinct points on affine $d$-space modulo translation and homothety. The points in the boundary correspond to $n$-pointed stable rooted trees of $d$-dimensional projective spaces, which for $d = 1$, are $(n+1)$-pointed stable rational curves. In particular, $T_{1,n}$ is isomorphic to $\bar{M}_{0,n+1}$, the moduli space of such curves. The variety $T_{d,n}$ shares many properties with $\bar{M}_{0,n}$. For example, as we prove, the boundary is a smooth normal crossings divisor whose componen…
Using the construction of Colliot-Thélène and Ojanguren, we exhibit an example of a smooth projective geometrically rational variety X defined over a finite field F_p with an algebraic closure \bar F_p and the absolute Galois group G, such that the group H^3_nr(X, Z/2) is nonzero and the map CH^2(X)\to CH^2(\bar X)^G is not surjective.
We study the Chow ring of the moduli stack $\mathfrak{M}_{g,n}$ of prestable curves and define the notion of tautological classes on this stack. We extend formulas for intersection products and functoriality of tautological classes under natural morphisms from the case of the tautological ring of the moduli space $\bar{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$ of stable curves. This paper provides foundations for the second part of the paper. In the appendix (joint with J. Skowera), we develop the theory of a proper, but not necessary projective, pushforward of algebraic cycles. The proper pushforward is necessary …
Let M_{P^k}(P^r, d) be the moduli space of unparameterized maps μ:P^k -> P^r satisfying μ^*(O(1))= O(d). M_{P^k}(P^r,d) is a quasi-projective variety, and, in case k=1, M_{P^1}(P^r,d) is the fundamental open cell of Kontsevich's space of stable maps \bar{M}_{0,0}(P^r,d). It is shown that the Q-coefficient Chow ring of M_{P^k}(P^r,d) is canonically isomorphic to the Chow ring of the Grassmannian Gr(P^k, P^r)= M_{P^k}(P^r,1).
In this work we compute the Chen--Ruan cohomology and the stringy Chow ring of the moduli spaces of smooth and stable $n$-pointed curves of genus 1. We suggest a definition for an Orbifold Tautological Ring in genus 1, which is both a subring of the Chen--Ruan cohomology and of the stringy Chow ring.
We give a geometric invariant theory (GIT) construction of the log canonical model $\bar M_g(α)$ of the pairs $(\bar M_g, αδ)$ for $α\in (7/10 - ε, 7/10]$ for small $ε\in \mathbb Q_+$. We show that $\bar M_g(7/10)$ is isomorphic to the GIT quotient of the Chow variety bicanonical curves; $\bar M_g(7/10-ε)$ is isomorphic to the GIT quotient of the asymptotically-linearized Hilbert scheme of bicanonical curves. In each case, we completely classify the (semi)stable curves and their orbit closures. Chow semistable curves have ordinary cusps and tacnodes as singularities but do not admit elliptic t…
This work is inspired by conversations with Izzet Coskun and Joe Harris. We run the log minimal model program for the Kontsevich space of stable maps $\bar{\mathcal M}_{0,0}(\mathbb P^{3}, 3)$ and give modular interpretations to all the intermediate spaces appearing in the process. In particular, we show that one component of the Hilbert scheme $\mathcal H_{3,0,3}$ is the flip of $\bar{\mathcal M}_{0,0}(\mathbb P^{3}, 3)$ over the Chow variety. Finally as an easy corollary we obtain that $\bar{\mathcal M}_{0,0}(\mathbb P^{3}, 3)$ is a Mori dream space.
We construct a family of additive endomorphisms $Ψ_k, k=1, 2...$ of the Grothendieck ring of quasiprojective varieties and the Grothendieck ring of Chow motives similar to the Adams operations in the K-theory. The speciality of the $λ$-structure on the Grothendieck ring of motives (proved by F. Heinloth) gives a set of natural equations for these operations. We discuss this construction in a general setting and relate it to the concept of power structures introduced by S. Gusein-Zade, I. Luengo and A. Melle-Hernandez. Some interpretation of the E. Getzler's formula for the equivariant Hodge-De…
Let the bielliptic locus be the closure in the moduli space of stable curves of the locus of smooth curves that are double covers of genus 1 curves. In this paper we compute the class of the bielliptic locus in \bar{M}_3 in terms of a standard basis of the rational Chow group of codimension-2 classes in the moduli space. Our method is to test the class on the hyperelliptic locus: this gives the desired result up to two free parameters, which are then determined by intersecting the locus with two surfaces in \bar{M}_3.
We show that the additive higher Chow groups of regular schemes over a field induce a Zariski sheaf of pro-differential graded algebras, whose Milnor range is isomorphic to the Zariski sheaf of big de Rham-Witt complexes. This provides an explicit cycle-theoretic description of the big de Rham-Witt sheaves. Several applications are derived.
We give lower bounds for the rank of the first homology group of the real points of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification of stable n-pointed curves of genus 0,which coincides with the Chow quotient (RP^1)^n//PGL(2,R).The study has connections with spectral geometry and combinatorics.
We compute the rank of the first homology group and we study the higher Betti numbers of the real points of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen compactification of stable n-pointed curves of genus 0,which coincides with the Chow quotient (RP^1)^n//PGL(2,R)(after Kapranov).
We prove a moving lemma for the additive and ordinary higher Chow groups of relative $0$-cycles of regular semi-local $k$-schemes essentially of finite type over an infinite perfect field. From this, we show that the cycle classes can be represented by cycles that possess certain finiteness, surjectivity, and smoothness properties. It plays a key role in showing that the crystalline cohomology of smooth varieties can be expressed in terms of algebraic cycles.
In this paper, certain natural and elementary polygonal objects in Euclidean space, {\it the stable polygons}, are introduced, and the novel moduli spaces ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r}, ε}$ of stable polygons are constructed as complex analytic spaces. Quite unexpectedly, these new moduli spaces are shown to be projective and isomorphic to the moduli space $\bar{\cM}_{0,n}$ of the Deligne-Mumford stable curves of genus 0. Further, built into the structures of stable polygons are some natural data leading toward to a family of (classes of) symplectic (Kähler) forms. To some degree, ${\bfmit M}_{{\bf r},…
