The Chow group of zero cycles in the moduli space of stable pointed curves of genus zero is isomorphic to the integer additive group. Let $M$ be monomial in this Chow group. If no two factors of $M$ fulfill a particular quadratic relation, then the monomial can be represented equivalently by a specific tree; otherwise, $M$ is mapped to zero under the stated isomorphism. Starting from this tree representation, we introduce a graphical algorithm for computing the corresponding integer for $M$ under the aforementioned isomorphism. The algorithm is linear with respect to the size of the tree.
The Chow ring of the moduli space of marked rational curves is generated by Keel's divisor classes. The top graded part of this Chow ring is isomorphic to the integers, generated by the class of a single point. In this paper, we give an algorithm for computing the intersection degree of tuples of Keel's divisor classes. This computation is a concrete but complicated algorithmic question in the field. Also, we give a simple complexity argument for the algorithm. Additionally, we introduce three identities on multinomial coefficients, as well as proofs for them.
Naruki gave an explicit construction of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces, starting from a toric variety and proceeding with blow ups and contractions. Using his result, we compute the Chow groups and the Chern classes of this moduli space. As an application we relate a recent result of Freitag on the Hilbert polynomial of a certain ring of modular forms to the Riemann-Roch theorem for the moduli space.
In this paper, we present explicit toric construction of moduli space of quasi maps from $\mathbb{P}^1$ with two marked points to $\mathbb{P}^1 \times \mathbb{P}^1$, which was first proposed by Jinzenji and prove that it is a compact orbifold. We also determine its Chow ring and compute its Poincaré polynomial for some lower degree cases.
We determine the rational Chow ring of the moduli space $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ of $n$-pointed smooth hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ when $n \leq 2g+6$. We also show that the Chow ring of the partial compactification $\mathcal{I}_{g,n}$, parametrizing $n$-pointed irreducible nodal hyperelliptic curves, is generated by tautological divisors. Along the way, we improve Casnati's result that $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 2g+8$ to show $\mathcal{H}_{g,n}$ is rational for $n \leq 3g+5$.
We study a graded algebra D=D(L,G) defined by a finite lattice L and a subset G in L, a so-called building set. This algebra is a generalization of the cohomology algebras of hyperplane arrangement compactifications found in work of De Concini and Procesi. Our main result is a representation of D, for an arbitrary atomic lattice L, as the Chow ring of a smooth toric variety that we construct from L and G. We describe this variety both by its fan and geometrically by a series of blowups and orbit removal. Also we find a Groebner basis of the relation ideal of D and a monomial basis of D over Z.
The first secant variety of a projective monomial curve is a threefold with an action by a one-dimensional torus. Its tropicalization is a three-dimensional fan with a one-dimensional lineality space, so the tropical threefold is represented by a balanced graph. Our main result is an explicit construction of that graph. As a consequence, we obtain algorithms to effectively compute the multidegree and Chow polytope of an arbitrary projective monomial curve. This generalizes an earlier degree formula due to Ranestad. The combinatorics underlying our construction is rather delicate, and it is bas…
We describe the Chow ring with rational coefficients of the moduli space of stable maps with marked points Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) as the subring of invariants of a ring B, relative to the action of the group of symmetries of d elements. B is computed by following a sequence of intermediate spaces for Mbar_{0,m}(n,d) and relating them to substrata of Mbar_{0,1}(n,d+m-1). An additive basis for the Chow ring is presented.
We give a presentation for the Chow ring of the moduli space of degree two stable maps from two-pointed rational curves to P^1. Also, integrals of of all degree four monomials in the hyperplane pullbacks and boundary divisors of this ring are computed using equivariant intersection theory. Finally, the presentation is used to give a new computation of the (previously known) values of the genus zero, degree two, two-pointed gravitational correlators of P^1. This article is a sequel to math.AG/0501322, although the only information truly needed from that article is the Poincare polynomial of the…
Let $J\subset S=K[x_0,...,x_n]$ be a monomial strongly stable ideal. The collection $\Mf(J)$ of the homogeneous polynomial ideals $I$, such that the monomials outside $J$ form a $K$-vector basis of $S/I$, is called a {\em $J$-marked family}. It can be endowed with a structure of affine scheme, called a {\em $J$-marked scheme}. For special ideals $J$, $J$-marked schemes provide an open cover of the Hilbert scheme $\hilbp$, where $p(t)$ is the Hilbert polynomial of $S/J$. Those ideals more suitable to this aim are the $m$-truncation ideals $\underline{J}_{\geq m}$ generated by the monomials of d…
We define and study a family of cubic surfaces in the projectivized tangent bundle over a four dimensional projective space associated to the root system D_5. The 27 lines are rational over the base and we determine the classifying map to the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces. This map has degree two and we use it to get short proofs for some results on the Chow group of the moduli space of marked cubic surfaces.
In this paper, we show the existence of a Chow--Kuenneth decomposition for the moduli stack of stable curves of genus g with r marked points, for low values of g,r. We also look at the moduli space R of double covers of genus 3 curves, branched along 4 distinct points. We obtain a birational model of the moduli space R as a group quotient of a product of two Grassmanian varieties. This provides a Chow-Kuenneth decomposition over an open subset of R. The question of rationality of R is also discussed.
We give an explicit description of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ as a weighted blow-up of a weighted projective stack. We use this description to compute the Brauer group of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2;S}$ over any base scheme $S$ where 6 is invertible, and the integral Chow rings of $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,2}$ and $\mathcal{M}_{1,2}$.
We present an explicit construction of a compactification of the locus of smooth curves whose symmetric Weierstrass semigroup at a marked point is odd. The construction is an extension of Stoehr's techniques using Pinkham'sequivariant deformation of monomial curves by exploring syzygies. As an application we prove the rationality of the locus for genus at most six.
In this paper, we prove formulas that represent two-pointed Gromov-Witten invariant <O_{h^a}O_{h^b}>_{0,d} of projective hypersurfaces with d=1,2 in terms of Chow ring of Mbar_{0,2}(P^{N-1},d), the moduli spaces of stable maps from genus 0 stable curves to projective space P^{N-1}. Our formulas are based on representation of the intersection number w(O_{h^a}O_{h^b})_{0,d}, which was introduced by Jinzenji, in terms of Chow ring of Mp_{0,2}(N,d), the moduli space of quasi maps from P^1 to P^{N-1} with two marked points. In order to prove our formulas, we use the results on Chow ring of Mbar_{0,…
We compute the Chow ring of an arbitrary heavy/light Hassett space $\bar{M}_{0, w}$. These spaces are moduli spaces of weighted pointed stable rational curves, where the associated weight vector $w$ consists of only heavy and light weights. Work of Cavalieri et al. exhibits these spaces as tropical compactifications of hyperplane arrangement complements. The computation of the Chow ring then reduces to intersection theory on the toric variety of the Bergman fan of a graphic matroid. Keel has calculated the Chow ring $A^*(\bar{M}_{0, n})$ of the moduli space $\bar{M}_{0, n}$ of stable nodal $n$…
In this paper, we construct toric data of moduli space of quasi maps of degree $d$ from P^{1} with two marked points to weighted projective space P(1.1,1,3). With this result, we prove that the moduli space is a compact toric orbifold. We also determine its Chow ring. Moreover, we give a proof of the conjecture proposed by Jinzenji that a series of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces coincides with expansion coefficients of inverse function of -log(j(tau)).
We present an algorithm that computes the number of realizations of a Laman graph on a sphere for a general choice of the angles between the vertices. The algorithm is based on the interpretation of such a realization as a point in the moduli space of stable curves of genus zero with marked points, and on the explicit description, due to Keel, of the Chow ring of this space.
In this work we describe the Chen-Ruan cohomology of the moduli stacks of smooth and stable genus 2 pointed curves, and its algebraic counterpart: the stringy Chow ring. In the first half of the paper we compute the additive structure of the Chen-Ruan cohomology ring for the moduli stack of stable pointed genus 2 curves, describing it as a rationally graded vector space. In the second part we give generators for the even Chen--Ruan cohomology ring as an algebra on the ordinary cohomology.
We find a set of generators and relations for the system of extended tautological rings associated to the moduli spaces of stable maps in genus zero, admitting a simple geometrical interpretation. In particular, when the target is $\PP^n$, these give a complete presentation for the cohomology and Chow rings in the cases with/without marked points.
The minimal model program suggests a compactification of the moduli space of hyperplane arrangements which is a moduli space of stable pairs. Here, a stable pair consists of a scheme X which is a degeneration of projective space and a divisor D=D_1+..+D_n on X which is a limit of hyperplane arrangements. For example, in the 1-dimensional case, the stable pairs are stable curves of genus 0 with n marked points. Kapranov has defined an alternative compactification using his Chow quotient construction, which may be described fairly explicitly. We prove that these two compactifications coincide. W…
Using the compactified universal jacobian over the moduli space of stable marked curves, we give an expression in terms of natural classes of the zero section of the compactified universal jacobian the (rational) Chow ring. After extending variants of the Abel-Jacobi map to a locus containing curves of treelike type we give a formula for the pullback of the said zero section along these extensions. The same approach is also applied to recover known formulas for the pullback of theta divisors to the moduli space of marked stable curves.
We prove that Chow groups of certain non-commutative Hilbert schemes have a basis consisting of monomials in Chern classes of the universal bundle. Furthermore, we realize the cohomology of non-commutative Hilbert schemes as a module over the Cohomological Hall algebra.
Let J be a strongly stable monomial ideal in S=K[x_1,...,x_n] and let Mf(J) be the family of all homogeneous ideals I in S such that the set of all terms outside J is a K-vector basis of the quotient S/I. We show that an ideal I belongs to Mf(J) if and only if it is generated by a special set of polynomials, the J-marked basis of I, that in some sense generalizes the notion of reduced Groebner basis and its constructive capabilities. Indeed, although not every J-marked basis is a Groebner basis with respect to some term order, a sort of normal form modulo I (with the ideal I in Mf(J)) can be c…
The image of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement under a monomial map can be tropicalized combinatorially using matroid theory. We apply this to classical moduli spaces that are associated with complex reflection arrangements. Starting from modular curves, we visit the Segre cubic, the Igusa quartic, and moduli of marked del Pezzo surfaces of degrees 2 and 3. Our primary example is the Burkhardt quartic, whose tropicalization is a 3-dimensional fan in 39-dimensional space. This effectuates a synthesis of concrete and abstract approaches to tropical moduli of genus 2 curves.
Let M_{g,n} be the moduli space of stable genus g curves with n marked points. M_{g,n} has boundary strata consisting of nodal curves. The fundamental classes of these boundary strata may be linearly dependent in the Chow group A_*(M_{g,n}). Relations among these boundary strata can be found by exploiting a localization trick involving stable maps to P^1. This note explains this trick and applies it to give a new derivation of Getzler's relation among codimension 2 boundary strata in M_{1,4}.
We study the compactification of the locus parametrizing lines with a fixed intersection to a given line, inside the moduli space of line arrangements in the projective plane constructed for weight one by Hacking-Keel-Tevelev and Alexeev for general weights. We show that this space is smooth, with normal crossing boundary, and that it has a morphism to the moduli space of marked rational curves which can be understood as a natural continuation of the blow up construction of Kapranov. In addition, we prove that it is isomorphic to a closed subvariety inside a non-reductive Chow quotient. The pa…
Pandharipande-Pixton have used the geometry of the moduli space of stable quotients to produce relations between tautological Chow classes on the moduli space $M_g$ of smooth genus g curves. We study a natural extension of their methods to the boundary and more generally to Hassett's moduli spaces $\overline M_{g, w}$ of stable nodal curves with weighted marked points. Algebraic manipulation of these relations brings them into a Faber-Zagier type form. We show that they give Pixton's generalized FZ relations when all weights are one. As a special case, we give a formulation of FZ relations for…
We compute the classes of universal theta divisors of degrees zero and g-1 over the Deligne-Mumford compactification of the moduli space of curves, with various integer weights on the points, in particular reproving a recent result of Müller. We also obtain a formula for the class in the Chow ring of the moduli space of curves of compact type of the double ramification locus, given by the condition that a fixed linear combination of the marked points is a principal divisor, reproving a recent result of Hain. Our approach for computing the theta divisor is more direct, via test curves and the g…
Consider the moduli space M^0 of arrangements of n hyperplanes in general position in projective (r-1)-space. When r=2 the space has a compactification given by the moduli space of stable curves of genus 0 with n marked points. In higher dimensions, the analogue of the moduli space of stable curves is the moduli space of stable pairs: pairs (S,B) consisting of a variety S (possibly reducible) and a divisor B=B_1+..+B_n, satisfying various additional assumptions. We identify the closure of M^0 in the moduli space of stable pairs as Kapranov's Chow quotient compactification of M^0, and give an e…
We provide a new lower bound for the dimension of the moduli space of smooth pointed curves with prescribed Weierstrass semigroup at the marked point, derived from the Deligne-Greuel formula and Pinkham's equivariant deformation theory. Using Buchweitz's description of the first cohomology module of the cotangent complex for monomial curves, we show that our lower bound improves a recently one given by Pflueger. By allowing semigroups running over suitable families of symmetric semigroups of multiplicity six, we show that this new lower bound is attained, and that the corresponding moduli spac…
We study deformations of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces $S$ of the compact type, known to be locally rigid, as projective-algberaic manifolds and prove that no jump of complex structures can occur. For each $S$ of rank $\ge 2$ there is an associated reductive linear group $G$ such that $S$ admits a holomorphic $G$-structure, corresponding to a reduction of the structure group of the tangent bundle. $S$ is characterized as the unique simply-connected compact complex manifold admitting such a $G$-structure which is at the same time integrable. To prove the deformation rigidity of $S$ it …
