Anick proved that every q-mild Hopf algebra up to homotopy is isomorphic to a primitively-generated chain Hopf algebra. We provide a new proof, that involves extensive use of the Bockstein spectral sequence.
The chromatic spectral sequence is introduced in \cite{mrw} to compute the $E_2$-term of the \ANSS\ for computing the stable homotopy groups of spheres. The $E_1$-term $E_1^{s,t}(k)$ of the spectral sequence is an Ext group of $BP_*BP$-comodules. There are a sequence of Ext groups $E_1^{s,t}(n-s)$ for non-negative integers $n$ with $E_1^{s,t}(0)=E_1^{s,t}$, and Bockstein spectral sequences computing a module $E_1^{s,*}(n-s)$ from $E_1^{s-1,*}(n-s+1)$. So far, a small number of the $E_1$-terms are determined. Here, we determine the $E_1^{1,1}(n-1)=\e^1M^1_{n-1}$ for $p>2$ and $n>3$ by computing…
This paper contains a complete computation of the homotopy ring of the spectrum of topological modular forms constructed by Hopkins and Miller. The computation is done away from 6, and at the (interesting) primes 2 and 3 separately, and in each of the latter two cases, a sequence of algebraic Bockstein spectral sequences is used to compute the E_2 term of the elliptic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence from the elliptic curve Hopf algebroid. In a further step, all the differentials in the latter spectral sequence are determined. The result of this computation is originally due to Hopkins and Maho…
This article computes some motivic stable homotopy groups over R. For 0 <= p - q <= 3, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups of a completion of the motivic sphere spectrum. These are the first four Milnor-Witt stems. We start with the known Ext groups over C and apply the rho-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain Ext groups over R. This is the input to an Adams spectral sequence, which collapses in our low dimensional range.
We define a simplicial enrichment on the category of differential graded Hopf cooperads (the category of dg Hopf cooperads for short). We prove that our simplicial enrichment satisfies, in part, the axioms of a simplicial model category structure on the category of dg Hopf cooperads. We use this simplicial model structure to define a model of mapping spaces in the category of dg Hopf cooperads and to upgrade results of the literature about the homotopy automorphism spaces of dg Hopf cooperads by dealing with simplicial monoid structures. The rational homotopy theory of operads implies that the…
We compute some R-motivic stable homotopy groups. For $s - w \leq 11$, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups $π_{s,w}$ of a completion of the R-motivic sphere spectrum. We apply the $ρ$-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain R-motivic Ext groups from the C-motivic Ext groups, which are well-understood in a large range. These Ext groups are the input to the R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. We fully analyze the Adams differentials in a range, and we also analyze hidden extensions by $ρ$, 2, and $η$. As a consequence of our computations, we recover Mahowald invariants of many low-dimens…
The search for higher homotopy Hopf algebras (known today as A_\infty-bialgebras) began in 1996 during a conference at Vassar College honoring Jim Stasheff in the year of his 60th birthday. In a talk entitled "In Search of Higher Homotopy Hopf Algebras", I indicated that a DG Hopf algebra could be thought of as some (unknown) higher homotopy structure with trivial higher order structure and deformed using a graded version of Gerstenhaber and Schack's bialgebra deformation theory. In retrospect, the bi(co)module structure encoded in Gerstenhaber and Schack's differential defining deformation co…
In this paper we explore new relations between Algebraic Topology and the theory of Hopf Algebras. For an arbitrary topological space $X$, the loop space homology $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$ is a Hopf algebra. We introduce a new homotopy invariant of a topological space $X$ taking for its value the isomorphism class (over the integers) of the Hopf algebra $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$. This invariant is trivial if and only if the Hopf algebra $H_*(ΩΣX; \coefZ)$ is isomorphic to a Lie-Hopf algebra, that is, to a primitively generated Hopf algebra. We show that for a given $X$ these invariants are obstructions to t…
We give a new solution of the "homotopy periods" problem, as highlighted by Sullivan, which places explicit geometrically meaningful formulae first dating back to Whitehead in the context of Quillen's formalism for rational homotopy theory and Koszul-Moore duality. Geometrically, we show that homotopy groups are rationally given by "generalized linking/intersection invariants" of cochain data. Moreover, we give a method for determining when two maps from $S^n$ to $X$ are homotopic after allowing for multiplication by some integer. For applications, we investigate wedges of spheres and homogene…
A geometric approach to the stable homotopy groups of spheres is developed in this paper, based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction. The task of this approach is to obtain an alternative proof of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel theorem [H-H-R] on Kervaire invariants in all dimensions, except, possibly, a finite number of dimensions. In the framework of this approach, the Adams theorem on the Hopf invariant is studied, for all dimensions with the exception of 15, 31, 63, 127. The new approach is based on the methods of geometric topology.
We use Cayley-Dickson algebras to produce Hopf elements eta, nu and sigma in the motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres, and we prove via geometric arguments that the the products eta*nu and nu*sigma both vanish. Along the way we develop several basic facts about the motivic stable homotopy ring.
The classical Hopf invariant is an invariant of homotopy classes of maps from $S^{4n-1} $ to $S^{2n}$, and is an important invariant in homotopy theory. The goal of this paper is to use the Koszul duality theory for $E_n$-operads to define a generalization of the classical Hopf invariant. One way of defining the classical Hopf invariant is by defining a pairing between the cohomology of the associative bar construction on the cochains of a space $X$ and the homotopy groups of $X$. In this paper we will give a generalization of the classical Hopf invariant by defining a pairing between the coho…
We present a descent style, Bockstein spectral sequence computing Ext over the motivic Steenrod algebra over $\R$ and related sub-Hopf algebras. We demonstrate the workings of this spectral sequence in several examples, providing motivic analogues to the classical computations related to BP<n> and ko.
We define a notion of homotopy Segal cooperad in the category of $ E_\infty $-algebras. This model of Segal cooperad that we define in the paper, which we call homotopy Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperad, covers examples given by the cochain complex of topological operads and provides a framework for the study of the homotopy of such objects. In a first step, we consider a category of Segal $ E_\infty $-Hopf cooperads, which consists of collections of $ E_\infty $-algebras indexed by trees and equipped with coproduct operators, corresponding to tree morphisms, together with facet operators, corr…
Mahowald's conjecture arose as part of a program attempting to view chromatic phenomena in stable homotopy theory through the lens of the classical Adams spectral sequence. The conjecture predicts the existence of nonzero classes in the cohomology of the finite sub-Hopf algebras $A(n)$ of the mod 2 Steenrod algebra that correspond to generators in the homotopy rings of certain periodic spectra. The purpose of this note is to present a proof of the conjecture.
We use an Adams spectral sequence to calculate the R-motivic stable homotopy groups after inverting eta. The first step is to apply a Bockstein spectral sequence in order to obtain h_1-inverted R-motivic Ext groups, which serve as the input to the eta-inverted R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. The second step is to analyze Adams differentials. The final answer is that the Milnor-Witt (4k-1)-stem has order 2^{u+1}, where u is the 2-adic valuation of 4k. This answer is reminiscent of the classical image of J. We also explore some of the Toda bracket structure of the eta-inverted R-motivic stabl…
In this paper a geometric approach toward stable homotopy groups of spheres, based on the Pontrjagin-Thom construction is proposed. From this approach a new proof of Hopf Invariant One Theorem by J.F.Adams for all dimensions except $15,31,63,127$ is obtained. It is proved that for $n>127$ in the stable homotopy group of spheres $Π_n$ there is no elements with Hopf invariant one. The new proof is based on geometric topology methods. The Pontrjagin-Thom Theorem (in the form proposed by R.Wells) about the representation of stable homotopy groups of the real projective infinite-dimensional space (…
Given a good homology theory E and a topological space X, the E-homology of X is not just an E_{*}-module but also a comodule over the Hopf algebroid (E_{*}, E_{*}E). We establish a framework for studying the homological algebra of comodules over a well-behaved Hopf algebroid (A, Gamma). That is, we construct the derived category Stable(Gamma) of (A, Gamma) as the homotopy category of a Quillen model structure on the category of unbounded chain complexes of Gamma-comodules. This derived category is obtained by inverting the homotopy isomorphisms, NOT the homology isomorphisms. We establish the…
The transfer of the generating operations of an algebra to a homotopy equivalent chain complex produces higher operations. The first goal of this paper is to describe precisely the higher structure obtained when the unary operations commute with the contracting homotopy. To solve this problem, we develop the Koszul duality theory of operads in the category of modules over a cocommutative Hopf algebra. This gives rise to a simpler category of homotopy algebras and infinity-morphisms, which allows us to get a new description of the homotopy category of algebras over such operads. The main exampl…
In this paper we determine the rational homotopy type of the classifying space of a generic Kac-Moody group by computing its rational cohomology ring. As an application we determine the rational homology Hopf algebra of the generic Kac-Moody group.
Given a CW-complex A we define an `A-shaped' homology theory which behaves nicely towards A-homotopy groups allowing the generalization of many classical results. We also develop a relative version of the Federer spectral sequence for computing A-homotopy groups. As an application we derive a generalization of the Hopf-Whitney theorem.
We characterize Hopf spaces with finitely generated cohomology as an algebra over the Steenrod algebra. We "deconstruct" the original space into an H-space Y with finite mod p cohomology and a finite number of p-torsion Eilenberg-Mac Lane spaces. We give a precise description of homotopy commutative H-spaces in this setting.
The topological Hochschild homology THH(R) of a commutative S-algebra (E_infty ring spectrum) R naturally has the structure of a commutative R-algebra in the strict sense, and of a Hopf algebra over R in the homotopy category. We show, under a flatness assumption, that this makes the Boekstedt spectral sequence converging to the mod p homology of THH(R) into a Hopf algebra spectral sequence. We then apply this additional structure to the study of some interesting examples, including the commutative S-algebras ku, ko, tmf, ju and j, and to calculate the homotopy groups of THH(ku) and THH(ko) af…
We prove that the category of algebras over a cofibrant operad admits a closed model category structure. This leads to the notion of "virtual operad algebra" - the algebra over a cofibrant resolution of the given operad. In particular, virtual commutative algebras can serve to an algebraic description of homotopy p-tipes as in the recent preprint of Mandell (electronic Hopf topology archive, october '98, see http://www.hopf.math.purdue.edu. Our main result allows one to significally simplify the proof of Mandell's theorem.
If P is a dg-operad acting on a dg-algebra A via algebra homomorphisms, then P acts on the Hochschild complex of A. In the more general case when P is a dg-prop, we show that P still acts on the Hochschild complex, but only up to coherent homotopy. We moreover give a functorial dg-replacement of P that strictifies the action. As an application, we obtain an explicit strictification of the homotopy coherent commutative Hopf algebra structure on the Hochschild complex of a commutative Hopf algebra.
Associated to every connected, topological space $X$ there is a Hopf algebra - the Pontrjagin ring of the based loop space of the configuration space of two points in X. We prove that this Hopf algebra is not a homotopy invariant of the space. We also exhibit interesting examples of H-spaces, which are homotopy equivalent as spaces, which either lead to isomorphic rational Hopf algebras or not, depending crucially on the existence of Whitehead products. Moreover, we investigate a (naturally motivated) twisted version of these Pontrjagin rings in the various aforementioned contexts. In all of t…
Combinatorial groups together with the groups of natural coalgebra transformations of tensor algebras are linked to the groups of homotopy classes of maps from the James construction to a loop space. This connection gives rise to applications to homotopy theory. The Hopf invariants of the Whitehead products are studied and a rate of exponent growth for the strong version of the Barratt Conjecture is given.
Let G be a finite group. For semi-free G-manifolds which are oriented in the sense of Waner, the homotopy classes of G-equivariant maps into a G-sphere are described in terms of their degrees, and the degrees occurring are characterized in terms of congruences. This is first shown to be a stable problem and then solved using methods of equivariant stable homotopy theory with respect to a semi-free G-universe.
Given a $C_\infty$ coalgebra $C_*$, a strict dg Hopf algebra $H_*$, and a twisting cochain $τ:C_* \rightarrow H_*$ such that $Im(τ) \subset Prim(H_*)$, we describe a procedure for obtaining an $A_\infty$ coalgebra on $C_* \otimes H_*$. This is an extension of Brown's work on twisted tensor products. We apply this procedure to obtain an $A_\infty$ coalgebra model of the chains on the free loop space $LM$ based on the $C_\infty$ coalgebra structure of $H_*(M)$ induced by the diagonal map $M \rightarrow M \times M$ and the Hopf algebra model of the based loop space given by $T(H_*(M)[-1])$. When …
We calculate the $η$-localization of the motivic stable homotopy ring over the complex numbers, confirming a conjecture of Guillou and Isaksen. Our approach is via the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. In fact, work of Hu, Kriz, and Ormsby implies that it suffices to compute the corresponding localization of the classical Adams-Novikov $E_2$-term, and this is what we do. Guillou and Isaksen also proposed a pattern of differentials in the localized motivic classical Adams spectral sequence, which we verify using a method first explored by Novikov.
To clarify the method behind the paper "Ganea's conjecture on Lusternik-Schnirelman category" by the author, a generalisation of Berstein-Hilton Hopf invariants is defined as `higher Hopf invariants'. They detect the higher homotopy associativity of Hopf spaces and are studied as obstructions not to increase the LS category by one by attaching a cone. Under a condition between dimension and LS category, a criterion for Ganea's conjecture on LS category is obtained using the generalised higher Hopf invariants, which yields the main result of "Ganea's ..." for all the cases except the case when …
The geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map F is a stable Z_2-equivariant map h(F) such that the stable Z_2-equivariant homotopy class of h(F) is the primary obstruction to F being homotopic to an unstable map. In this paper we express the geometric Hopf invariant of the Umkehr map F of an immersion f:M^m \to N^n in terms of the double point set of f. We interpret the Smale-Hirsch-Haefliger regular homotopy classification of immersions f in the metastable dimension range 3m<2n-1 (when a generic f has no triple points) in terms of the geometric Hopf invariant.
We develop a geometric approach to stable homotopy groups of spheres in the spirit of the work of Pontrjagin and Rokhlin. A new proof of the Hopf Invariant One Theorem by J.F.Adams is obtained in all dimensions except 15 and 31. To prove that the stable Hopf invariant H: Π_n \to Z/2 vanishes for n>31, we apply methods of geometric topology. The Pontrjagin-Thom construction along with Hirsch's compression lemma identify every α\in Π_n with the framed bordism class of a framed immersion of a closed n-manifold into R^{n+k}, for any given k>0. Its self-intersection M projects to an immersion f: M …
The first author's geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map $F:Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}Y$ is a stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant map $h(F):Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}(Y \wedge Y)$ constructed by an explicit difference construction applied to $(F \wedge F)Δ_X - Δ_Y F$. The stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant homotopy class of $h(F)$ is the primary obstruction to desuspending $F$ up to homotopy. The explicit nature of the construction allows for a $π$-equivariant version of $h(F)$ in the case of a $π$-equivariant $F$, with $π$ a discrete group. In earlier joint work we applied the $π_1(N)$-equi…
Let F denote the homotopy fiber of a map f:K-->L of 2-reduced simplicial sets. Using as input data the strongly homotopy coalgebra structure of the chain complexes of K and L, we construct a small, explicit chain algebra, the homology of which is isomorphic as a graded algebra to the homology of GF, the simplicial (Kan) loop group on F. To construct this model, we develop machinery for modeling the homotopy fiber of a morphism of chain Hopf algebras. Essential to our construction is a generalization of the operadic description of the category DCSH of chain coalgebras and of strongly homotopy c…
The purpose of this paper is to study some obstruction classes induced by a construction of a homotopy-theoretic version of projective TQFT (projective HTQFT for short). A projective HTQFT is given by a symmetric monoidal projective functor whose domain is the cospan category of pointed finite CW-spaces instead of a cobordism category. We construct a pair of projective HTQFT's starting from a $\mathsf{Hopf}^\mathsf{bc}_k$-valued Brown functor where $\mathsf{Hopf}^\mathsf{bc}_k$ is the category of bicommutative Hopf algebras over a field $k$ : the cospanical path-integral and the spanical path-…
The goal of this thesis is to prove that $π_4(S^3) \simeq \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ in homotopy type theory. In particular it is a constructive and purely homotopy-theoretic proof. We first recall the basic concepts of homotopy type theory, and we prove some well-known results about the homotopy groups of spheres: the computation of the homotopy groups of the circle, the triviality of those of the form $π_k(S^n)$ with $k < n$, and the construction of the Hopf fibration. We then move to more advanced tools. In particular, we define the James construction which allows us to prove the Freudenthal s…
In previous work with Niles Johnson the author constructed a spectral sequence for computing homotopy groups of spaces of maps between structured objects such as G-spaces and E_n-ring spectra. In this paper we study special cases of this spectral sequence in detail. Under certain assumptions, we show that the Goerss-Hopkins spectral sequence and the T-algebra spectral sequence agree. Under further assumptions, we can apply a variation of an argument due to Jennifer French and show that these spectral sequences agree with the unstable Adams spectral sequence. From these equivalences we obtain i…
We describe the dualization of the algebra of secondary cohomology operations in terms of generators extending the Milnor dual of the Steenrod algebra. In this way we obtain explicit formulae for the computation of the E_3-term of the Adams spectral sequence converging to the stable homotopy groups of spheres.
For a Hopf DG-algebra corresponding to a derived algebraic group, we compute the homotopy limit of the associated cosimplicial system of DG-algebras given by the classifying space construction. The homotopy limit is taken in the model category of DG-categories. The objects of the resulting DG-category are Maurer-Cartan elements of $\operatorname{Cobar}(A)$, or 1-dimensional $A_\infty$-comodules over $A$. These can be viewed as characters up to homotopy of the corresponding derived group. Their tensor product is interpreted in terms of Kadeishvili's multibraces. We also study the coderived cate…
The Hopf theorem states that homotopy classes of continuous maps from a closed connected oriented smooth $n$-manifold $M$ to the $n$-sphere are classified by their degree. Such a map is equivalent to a section of the trivial $n$-sphere bundle over $M$. A generalization of the Hopf theorem is obtained for sections of nontrivial oriented $n$-sphere bundles over $M$.
The $2$-primary Hopf invariant $1$ elements in the stable homotopy groups of spheres form the most accessible family of elements. In this paper we explore some properties of the $\mathcal{E}_\infty$ ring spectra obtained from certain iterated mapping cones by applying the free algebra functor. In fact, these are equivalent to Thom spectra over infinite loop spaces related to the classifying spaces $B\mathrm{SO},\,B\mathrm{Spin},\,B\mathrm{String}$. We show that the homology of these Thom spectra are all extended comodule algebras of the form $\mathcal{A}_*\square_{\mathcal{A}(r)_*}P_*$ over th…
Subtle issues arise when extending homotopy invariants to spaces of functions having little regularity, e.g., Sobolev spaces containing discontinuous functions. Sometimes it is not possible to extend the invariant at all, and sometimes, even when the formulas defining the invariants make sense, they may not have expected properties (e.g., there are maps having non-integral degree). In this paper we define a complete set of homotopy invariants for maps from 3-manifolds to the 2-sphere and show that these invariants extend to finite Faddeev energy maps and maps in suitable Sobolev spaces. For sm…
We use the Hopf fibration to explicitly compute generators of the second homotopy group of the flag manifolds of a compact Lie group. We show that these $2$-spheres have nice geometrical properties such as being totally geodesic surfaces with respect to any invariant metric on the flag manifold. We characterize when the generators with the same invariant geometry are in the same homotopy class. This is done by exploring the action of Weyl group on the irreducible components of isotropy representation of the flag manifold.
We introduce the notion of a strongly homotopy-comultiplicative resolution of a module coalgebra over a chain Hopf algebra, which we apply to proving a comultiplicative enrichment of a well-known theorem of Moore concerning the homology of quotient spaces of group actions. The importance of our enriched version of Moore's theorem lies in its application to the construction of useful cochain algebra models for computing multiplicative structure in equivariant cohomology. In the special cases of homotopy orbits of circle actions on spaces and of group actions on simplicial sets, we obtain small,…
Given a commutative ring spectrum $R$ let $Λ_XR$ be the Loday functor constructed by Brun, Carlson and Dundas. Given a prime $p\geq 5$ we calculate $π_*(Λ_{S^n}H\mathbb{F}_p)$ and $π_*(Λ_{T^n}H\mathbb{F}_p)$ for $n\leq p$, and use these results to deduce that $v_{n-1}$ in the $n-1$-th connective Morava $K$-theory of $(Λ_{T^{n}}H\mathbb{F}_p)^{hT^{n}}$ is non-zero and detected in the homotopy fixed point spectral sequence by an explicit element, which class we name the Rognes class. To facilitate these calculations we introduce Multifold Hopf algebras. Each axis circle in $T^n$ gives rise to a …
Let H be a differential graded Hopf algebra over a field k. This paper gives an explicit construction of a triple cochain complex that defines the Hochschild-Cartier cohomology of H. A certain truncation of this complex is the appropriate setting for deforming H as an H(q)-structure. The direct limit of all such truncations is the appropriate setting for deforming H as a strongly homotopy associative structure. Sign complications are systematically controlled. The connection between rational perturbation theory and the deformation theory of certain free commutative differential graded algebras…
We develop a spectral sequence for the homotopy groups of Loday constructions with respect to twisted products in the case where the group involved is a constant simplicial group. We show that for commutative Hopf algebra spectra Loday constructions are stable, generalizing a result by Berest, Ramadoss and Yeung. We prove that several truncated polynomial rings are not multiplicatively stable by investigating their torus homology.
We show that the cube of the Hopf map $η$ maps to zero under the Hurewicz map for all fixed points of all norms to cyclic $2$-groups of the Landweber-Araki Real bordism spectrum. Using that the slice spectral sequence is a spectral sequence of Mackey functors, we compute the relevant portion of the homotopy groups of these fixed points, showing that multiplication by $4$ annihilates $π_{3}$.
The 8-periodic theory that comes from the KO-theory of the mod 2 Moore space is the same as the real first Morava K-theory obtained from the homotopy fixed points of the Z/(2) action on the first Morava K-theory. The first Morava K-theory, K(1), is just mod 2 KU-theory. We compute the homology Hopf algebras for the spaces in this Omega spectrum. There are a lot of maps into and out of these spaces and the spaces for KO- theory, KU-theory and the first Morava K-theory. For every one of these 98 maps (counting suspensions) there is a spectral sequence. We describe all 98 maps and spectral sequen…
Waldhausen's $K$-theory of the sphere spectrum (closely related to the algebraic $K$-theory of the integers) is a naturally augmented $S^0$-algebra, and so has a Koszul dual. Classic work of Deligne and Goncharov implies an identification of the rationalization of this (covariant) dual with the Hopf algebra of functions on the motivic group for their category of mixed Tate motives over $\Z$. This paper argues that the rationalizations of categories of non-commutative motives defined recently by Blumberg, Gepner, and Tabuada consequently have natural enrichments, with morphism objects in the de…
Let A and B be two connected graded commutative k-algebras of finite type, where k is a perfect field of positive characteristic p. We prove that the quasi--shuffle algebras generated by A and B are isomorphic as Hopf algebras if and only if A and B are isomorphic as graded k-vector spaces equipped with a Frobenius (pth-power) map. For the hardest part of this analysis, we work with the dual construction, and are led to study connected graded cocommutative Hopf algebras H with two additional properties: H is free as an associative algebra, and the projection onto the indecomposables is split a…
