We compute some R-motivic stable homotopy groups. For $s - w \leq 11$, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups $π_{s,w}$ of a completion of the R-motivic sphere spectrum. We apply the $ρ$-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain R-motivic Ext groups from the C-motivic Ext groups, which are well-understood in a large range. These Ext groups are the input to the R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. We fully analyze the Adams differentials in a range, and we also analyze hidden extensions by $ρ$, 2, and $η$. As a consequence of our computations, we recover Mahowald invariants of many low-dimensional classical stable homotopy elements.
We show that the $C_2$-equivariant and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic stable homotopy groups are isomorphic in a range. This result supersedes previous work of Dugger and the third author.
We establish an isomorphism between the stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed motivic sphere spectrum over the real numbers and the corresponding stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed Z/2-equivariant sphere spectrum, in a certain range of dimensions.
We establish a differential $d_2(D_1)=h_0^2h_3g_2$ in the $51$-stem of the Adams spectral sequence at the prime $2$, which gives the first correct calculation of the stable 51 and 52 stems. This differential is remarkable since we know of no way to prove it without recourse to the motivic Adams spectral sequence. It is the last undetermined differential in the range of the first author's detailed calculations of the $n$-stems for $n<60$ [6]. This note advertises the use of the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain information about classical stable homotopy groups.
Let $\ell$ be a prime and $q = p^ν$ where $p$ is a prime different from $\ell$. We show that the $\ell$-completion of the $n$th stable homotopy group of spheres is a summand of the $\ell$-completion of the $(n, 0)$ motivic stable homotopy group of spheres over the finite field with $q$ elements $F_q$. With this, and assisted by computer calculations, we are able to explicitly compute the two-complete stable motivic stems $π_{n, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ for $0\leq n\leq 18$. Additionally, we compute $π_{19, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ and $π_{20, 0}(F_q)^{\wedge}_2$ when $q \equiv 1 \bmod 4$ assuming Morel'…
We present a detailed analysis of 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. We use the motivic May spectral sequence to compute the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over C through the 70-stem. We then use the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain motivic stable homotopy groups through the 59-stem. In addition to finding all Adams differentials in this range, we also resolve all hidden extensions by 2, eta, and nu, except for a few carefully enumerated exceptions that remain unknown. The analogous classical stable homotopy …
We prove strong convergence results for the motivic Adams spectral sequence of the sphere spectrum over fields with finite virtual cohomological dimension at the prime 2, and over arbitrary fields at odd primes. We show that the motivic Adams spectral sequence is not strongly convergent over number fields. As applications we give bounds on the exponents of the $(\ell,η)$-completed motivic stable stems, and calculate the zeroth $(\ell,η)$-completed motivic stable stems.
The motivic Mahowald invariant was introduced in \cite{Qui19a} and \cite{Qui19b} to study periodicity in the $\mathbb{C}$- and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic stable stems. In this paper, we define the motivic Mahowald invariant over any field $F$ of characteristic not two and use it to study periodicity in the $F$-motivic stable stems. In particular, we construct lifts of some of Adams' classical $v_1$-periodic families \cite{Ada66} and identify them as the motivic Mahowald invariants of powers of $2+ρη$.
This article computes some motivic stable homotopy groups over R. For 0 <= p - q <= 3, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups of a completion of the motivic sphere spectrum. These are the first four Milnor-Witt stems. We start with the known Ext groups over C and apply the rho-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain Ext groups over R. This is the input to an Adams spectral sequence, which collapses in our low dimensional range.
This document contains large-format Adams charts that compute 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. The charts are essentially complete through the 61-stem and contain partial results to the 70-stem. In the classical context, we believe that these are the most accurate charts of their kind. We also include Adams charts for the motivic homotopy groups of the cofiber of tau.
We survey computations of stable motivic homotopy groups over various fields. The main tools are the motivic Adams spectral sequence, the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence, and the effective slice spectral sequence. We state some projects for future study.
In this article we study thick ideals defined by periodic self maps in the stable motivic homotopy category over $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, we extend some results of Ruth Joachimi about the relation between thick ideals defined by motivic Morava K-theories and the preimages of the thick ideals in the stable homotopy category under Betti realization.
In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.
We study thick ideals in the stable motivic homotopy category SH(k) and in its subcategories of compact and of finite cellular objects. If k is a subfield of the complex or even the real numbers, then using comparison functors we find thick ideals corresponding to thick ideals in classical or Z/2-equivariant stable homotopy theory, respectively. We also study motivic Morava K-theories AK(n), for which we prove the motivic analogue of the decomposition of the Bousfield class of E(n) into Bousfield classes of K(i)'s over the complex numbers if p>2. In that case we also prove that AK(n)-acyclicit…
We use Cayley-Dickson algebras to produce Hopf elements eta, nu and sigma in the motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres, and we prove via geometric arguments that the the products eta*nu and nu*sigma both vanish. Along the way we develop several basic facts about the motivic stable homotopy ring.
Let $kq$ denote the very effective cover of Hermitian K-theory. We apply the $kq$-based motivic Adams spectral sequence, or $kq$-resolution, to computational motivic stable homotopy theory. Over base fields of characteristic not two, we prove that the $n$-th stable homotopy group of motivic spheres is detected in the first $n$ lines of the $kq$-resolution, thereby reinterpreting results of Morel and R{ö}ndigs-Spitzweck-Østvær in terms of $kq$ and $kq$-cooperations. Over algebraically closed fields of characteristic 0, we compute the ring of $kq$-cooperations modulo $v_1$-torsion, establish a v…
We study the stable motivic homotopy groups $π_{s,w}$ of the 2-completion of the motivic sphere spectrum over $\mathbb{C}$. When arranged in the $(s,w)$-plane, these groups break into four different regions: a vanishing region, an $η$-local region that is entirely known, a $τ$-local region that is identical to classical stable homotopy groups, and a region that is not well-understood.
We use an Adams spectral sequence to calculate the R-motivic stable homotopy groups after inverting eta. The first step is to apply a Bockstein spectral sequence in order to obtain h_1-inverted R-motivic Ext groups, which serve as the input to the eta-inverted R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. The second step is to analyze Adams differentials. The final answer is that the Milnor-Witt (4k-1)-stem has order 2^{u+1}, where u is the 2-adic valuation of 4k. This answer is reminiscent of the classical image of J. We also explore some of the Toda bracket structure of the eta-inverted R-motivic stabl…
Using techniques in motivic homotopy theory, especially the theorem of Gheorghe, the second and the third author on the isomorphism between motivic Adams spectral sequence for $Cτ$ and the algebraic Novikov spectral sequence for $BP_*$, we compute the classical and motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres from dimension 0 to 90, except for some carefully enumerated uncertainties.
We give a method for computing the C_2-equivariant homotopy groups of the Betti realization of a p-complete cellular motivic spectrum over R in terms of its motivic homotopy groups. More generally, we show that Betti realization presents the C_2-equivariant p-complete stable homotopy category as a localization of the p-complete cellular real motivic stable homotopy category.
The stable Picard group of finite Adams Hopf algebroids with an application to the $\mathbb{R}$-motivic Steenrod subalgebra $\mathcal{A}(1)^{\mathbb{R}}$
We construct a topological model for cellular, 2-complete, stable C-motivic homotopy theory that uses no algebro-geometric foundations. We compute the Steenrod algebra in this context, and we construct a "motivic modular forms" spectrum over C.
A C-motivic modular forms spectrum mmf has recently been constructed. This article presents detailed computational information on the Adams spectral sequence for mmf. This information is essential for computing with the C-motivic and classical Adams spectral sequences that compute the C-motivic and classical stable homotopy groups of spheres.
We strengthen some results in étale (and real étale) motivic stable homotopy theory, by eliminating finiteness hypotheses, additional localizations and/or extending to spectra from HZ-modules.
We compute the 2-line of stable homotopy groups of motivic spheres over fields of characteristic not two in terms of motivic cohomology and hermitian K-groups.
We study the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence at an odd prime $l$ over the base fields $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{R}$. This spectral sequence converges to the stable motivic homotopy groups of the $l$-completed motivic sphere spectrum. We show that the spectral sequence is determined by the topological Adams-Novikov sequence, similar to the situation at the prime two over the base field $\mathbb{C}$.
Let F be a field of characteristic different than 2. We establish surjectivity of Balmer's comparison map rho^* from the tensor triangular spectrum of the homotopy category of compact motivic spectra to the homogeneous Zariski spectrum of Milnor-Witt K-theory. We also comment on the tensor triangular geometry of compact cellular motivic spectra, producing in particular novel field spectra in this category. We conclude with a list of questions about the structure of the tensor triangular spectrum of the stable motivic homotopy category.
We show that mapping spaces in the p-local motivic stable category over an Fp-scheme are strictly commutative monoids (whence HZ-modules) in a canonical way.
In this paper we explore the isotropic stable motivic homotopy category constructed from the usual stable motivic homotopy category, following the work of Vishik on isotropic motives (see [29]), by killing anisotropic varieties. In particular, we focus on cohomology operations in the isotropic realm and study the structure of the isotropic Steenrod algebra. Then, we construct an isotropic version of the motivic Adams spectral sequence and apply it to find a complete description of the isotropic stable homotopy groups of the sphere spectrum, which happen to be isomorphic to the $Ext$-groups of …
We show that the Picard group $Pic(A(1))$ of the stable category of modules over $\mathbb{C}$-motivic $A(1)$ is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}^4$. By comparison, the Picard group of classical $A(1)$ is $\mathbb{Z}^2 \oplus \mathbb{Z}/2$. One extra copy of $\mathbb{Z}$ arises from the motivic bigrading. The joker is a well-known exotic element of order $2$ in the Picard group of classical $A(1)$. The $\mathbb{C}$-motivic joker has infinite order.
In this paper, we initiate a study of motivic homotopy theory at infinity. We use the six functor formalism to give an intrinsic definition of the stable motivic homotopy type at infinity of an algebraic variety. Our main computational tools include cdh-descent for normal crossing divisors, Euler classes, Gysin maps, and homotopy purity. Under $\ell$-adic realization, the motive at infinity recovers a formula for vanishing cycles due to Rapoport-Zink; similar results hold for Steenbrink's limiting Hodge structures and Wildeshaus' boundary motives. Under the topological Betti realization, the s…
Let k be a field with cohomological dimension less than 3; we call such fields low-dimensional. Examples include algebraically closed fields, finite fields and function fields thereof, local fields, and number fields with no real embeddings. We determine the 1-column of the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence over k. Combined with rational information we use this to compute the first stable motivic homotopy group of the sphere spectrum over k. Our main result affirms Morel's pi_1-conjecture in the case of low-dimensional fields. We also determine stable motivic pi_1 in integer weights othe…
For a finite Galois extension of fields L/k with Galois group G, we study a functor from the G-equivariant stable homotopy category to the stable motivic homotopy category over k induced by the classical Galois correspondence. We show that after completing at a prime and eta (the motivic Hopf map) this results in a full and faithful embedding whenever k is real closed and L = k[i]. It is a full and faithful embedding after eta-completion if a motivic version of Serre's finiteness theorem is valid. We produce strong necessary conditions on the field extension L/k for this functor to be full and…
We compute the 1-line of stable homotopy groups of motivic spheres over fields of characteristic not two in terms of hermitian and Milnor K-groups. This is achieved by solving questions about convergence and differentials in the slice spectral sequence.
Using a recent computation of the rational minus part of $SH(k)$ by Ananyevskiy-Levine-Panin, a theorem of Cisinski-Deglise and a version of the Roendigs-Ostvaer theorem, rational stable motivic homotopy theory over an infinite perfect field of characteristic different from 2 is recovered in this paper from finite Milnor-Witt correspondences in the sense of Calmes-Fasel.
The filtration $\operatorname{BGL}_{0}\subset\dots\subset\operatorname{BGL}_{n-1}\subset\operatorname{BGL}_{n}$ is split by motivic Becker-Gottlieb transfers in the motivic stable homotopy category over any scheme. This recovers results by Snaith on the splitting of $\operatorname{BGL}_{n}(\mathbb{C})$ in classical stable homotopy theory by passing to complex realizations. On the way, we extend motivic homotopy theory to smooth ind-schemes as bases and show how to construct the necessary fragment of the six operations and duality for this extension.
Michael Gromov has recently initiated what he calls ``symbolic algebraic geometry", in which objects are proalgebraic varieties: a proalgebraic variety is by definition the projective limit of a projective system of algebraic varieties. In this paper we construct Chern--Schwartz--MacPherson classes of proalgebraic varieties, by introducing the notion of ``proconstructible functions " and "$χ$-stable proconstructible functions" and using the Fulton-MacPherson's Bivariant Theory. As a "motivic" version of a $χ$-stable proconstructible function, $\Ga$-stable constructible functions are introduced…
In this paper we study a model structure on a category of schemes with a group action and the resulting unstable and stable equivariant motivic homotopy theories. The new model structure introduced here samples a comparison to the one by Voevodsky and Hu-Kriz-Ormsby. We show that it allows to detect equivariant motivic weak equivalences on fixed points and how this property leads to a topologically convenient behavior of stable equivalences. We also prove a negative result concerning descent for equivariant algebraic K-theory.
The term "motivic Moore spectrum" refers to a cone of an element in the motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres. This article discusses some properties of motivic Moore spectra, among them the question whether the ring structure on the motivic sphere spectrum descends to a ring structure on a motivic Moore spectrum. This discussion requires an understanding of some Toda brackets in the motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres.
We introduce in this work the notion of the category of pure $\mathbf{E}$-Motives, where $\mathbf{E}$ is a motivic strict ring spectrum and construct twisted $\mathbf{E}$-cohomology by using six functors formalism of J. Ayoub. In particular, we construct the category of pure Chow-Witt motives $CHW(k)_{\mathbb{Q}}$ over a field $k$ and show that this category admits a fully faithful embedding into the geometric stable $\mathbb{A}^1$-derived category $D_{\mathbb{A}^1,gm}(k)_{\mathbb{Q}}$.
Over any field of characteristic not 2, we establish a 2-term resolution of the $η$-periodic, 2-local motivic sphere spectrum by shifts of the connective 2-local Witt K-theory spectrum. This is curiously similar to the resolution of the K(1)-local sphere in classical stable homotopy theory. As applications we determine the $η$-periodized motivic stable stems and the $η$-periodized algebraic symplectic and SL-cobordism groups. Along the way we construct Adams operations on the motivic spectrum representing Hermitian K-theory and establish new completeness results for certain motivic spectra ove…
We establish a kind of "degree zero Freudenthal Gm-suspension theorem" in motivic homotopy theory. From this we deduce results about the conservativity of the P^1-stabilization functor. In order to establish these results, we show how to compute certain pullbacks in the cohomology of a strictly homotopy invariant sheaf in terms of the Rost--Schmid complex. This establishes the main conjecture of [BY18], which easily implies the aforementioned results.
By a theorem of Mandell-May-Schwede-Shipley the stable homotopy theory of classical $S^1$-spectra is recovered from orthogonal spectra. In this paper general linear, special linear, symplectic, orthogonal and special orthogonal motivic spectra are introduced and studied. It is shown that the stable homotopy theory of motivic spectra is recovered from each of these types of spectra. An application is given for the localization functor $C_*\mathcal Fr:SH_{nis}(k)\to SH_{nis}(k)$ in the sense of [15] that converts the Morel-Voevodsky stable motivic homotopy theory $SH(k)$ into the equivalent loca…
Let X be a Noetherian scheme of finite dimension and denote by rho the (additive inverse of the) morphism in SH(X) from S to Gm corresponding to the unit -1. Here SH(X) denotes the motivic stable homotopy category. We show that the category obtained by inverting rho in SH(X) is canonically equivalent to the (simplicial) local stable homotopy category of the site X_ret, by which we mean the small real etale site of X, comprised of etale schemes over X with the real etale topology. One immediate application is that SH(RR)[rho^-1] is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. In partic…
We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures. We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler c…
We calculate the $η$-localization of the motivic stable homotopy ring over the complex numbers, confirming a conjecture of Guillou and Isaksen. Our approach is via the motivic Adams-Novikov spectral sequence. In fact, work of Hu, Kriz, and Ormsby implies that it suffices to compute the corresponding localization of the classical Adams-Novikov $E_2$-term, and this is what we do. Guillou and Isaksen also proposed a pattern of differentials in the localized motivic classical Adams spectral sequence, which we verify using a method first explored by Novikov.
We describe the first stem of the stable homotopy groups of spheres by using some Puppe sequences, Thom complexes, K-Theory and Adams operations following the ideas of J. Frank Adams. We also touch upon the second and the third stems in this perspective. Neither spectral squences nor Steenrod operations are used.
