We study maps from a smooth scheme to a motivic sphere in the Morel-Voevodsky ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy category, i.e., motivic cohomotopy sets. Following Borsuk, we show that, in the presence of suitable hypotheses on the dimension of the source, motivic cohomotopy sets can be equipped with functorial abelian group structures.
We then explore links between motivic cohomotopy groups, Euler class groups à la Nori-Bhatwadekar-Sridharan and Chow-Witt groups. We show that, again under suitable hypotheses on the base field $k$, if $X$ is a smooth affine $k$-variety of dimension $d$, then the Euler class group of codimension $d$ cycles coincides with the codimension $d$ Chow-Witt group; the identification proceeds by comparing both groups with a suitable motivic cohomotopy group. As a byproduct, we describe the Chow group of zero cycles on a smooth affine $k$-scheme as the quotient of the free abelian group on zero cycles by the subgroup generated by reduced complete intersection ideals; this answers a question of S. Bhatwadekar and R. Sridharan.
The quadric $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is the ${\mathbb Z}$-scheme defined by the equation $\sum_{i=1}^n x_i y_i = z(1-z)$. We show that $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is a homogeneous space for the split reductive group scheme $\operatorname{SO}_{2n+1}$ over ${\mathbb Z}$. The quadric $\operatorname{Q}_{2n}$ is known to have the ${\mathbb A}^1$-homotopy type of a motivic sphere and the identification as a homogeneous space allows us to give a characteristic independent affine representability statement for motivic spheres. This last observation allows us to give characteristic independent comparison re…
We prove a trace formula in stable motivic homotopy theory over a general base scheme, equating the trace of an endomorphism of a smooth proper scheme with the "Euler characteristic integral" of a certain cohomotopy class over its scheme of fixed points. When the base is a field and the fixed points are étale, we compute this integral in terms of Morel's identification of the ring of endomorphisms of the motivic sphere spectrum with the Grothendieck-Witt ring. In particular, we show that the Euler characteristic of an étale algebra corresponds to the class of its trace form in the Grothendieck…
This paper examines a number of related questions about Euler characteristics and characteristic classes with values in Witt cohomology. We establish a motivic version of the Becker-Gottllieb transfer, generalizing a construction of Hoyois. Ananyevskiy's splitting principle reduces questions about characteristic classes of vector bundles in $\text{SL}$-oriented, $η$-invertible theories to the case of rank two bundles. We refine the torus-normalizer splitting principle for $\text{SL}_2$ to help compute the characteristic classes in Witt cohomology of symmetric powers of a rank two bundle, and t…
In this paper, we initiate a study of motivic homotopy theory at infinity. We use the six functor formalism to give an intrinsic definition of the stable motivic homotopy type at infinity of an algebraic variety. Our main computational tools include cdh-descent for normal crossing divisors, Euler classes, Gysin maps, and homotopy purity. Under $\ell$-adic realization, the motive at infinity recovers a formula for vanishing cycles due to Rapoport-Zink; similar results hold for Steenbrink's limiting Hodge structures and Wildeshaus' boundary motives. Under the topological Betti realization, the s…
The apparatus of motivic stable homotopy theory provides a notion of Euler characteristic for smooth projective varieties, valued in the Grothendieck-Witt ring of the base field. Previous work of the first author and recent work of Déglise-Jin-Khan establishes a "Gauß-Bonnet formula" relating this Euler characteristic to pushforwards of Euler classes in motivic cohomology theories. In this paper, we apply this formula to SL-oriented motivic cohomology theories to obtain explicit characterizations of this Euler characteristic. The main new input is a unicity result for pushforward maps in SL-or…
In this paper we give a formula for the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus $χ_y(X)$ and similarly for the motivic Hirzebruch class $T_{y*}(X)$ for possibly singular varieties $X$, using the Vandermonde matrix. Motivated by the notion of secondary Euler characteristic and higher Euler characteristic, we consider a similar notion for the motivic Hirzebruch class, which we call a \emph{derived motivic Hirzebruch class}
We introduce a new notion of $\boxast$-product of two integrable series with coefficients in distinct Grothendieck rings of algebraic varieties, preserving the integrability and commuting with the limit of rational series. In the same context, we define a motivic multiple zeta function with respect to an ordered family of regular functions, which is integrable and connects closely to Denef-Loeser's motivic zeta functions. We also show that the $\boxast$-product is associative in the class of motivic multiple zeta functions. Furthermore, a version of the Euler reflexion formula for motivic zeta…
We construct characteristic classes for singular algebraic varieties in motivic Borel-Moore homology, extending the motivic Euler class of the tangent bundle defined for smooth varieties. The two classes we define refine, in the setting of motivic homotopy theory, the top degree of the class constructed by Brasselet-Schuermann-Yokura in G-theory, and the top degree of the pro-CSM class constructed by Aluffi in pro-Chow groups. We deduce an extension of the motivic Gauss-Bonnet formula to non-smooth proper varieties.
We formulate and prove an analog of Poonen's finite-field Bertini theorem with Taylor conditions that holds in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. This gives a broad generalization of the work of Vakil-Wood, who treated the case of smooth hypersurface sections. In fact, our techniques give analogs in motivic statistics of all known results in arithmetic statistics that have been proven using Poonen's sieve, including work of Bucur-Kedlaya on complete intersections and Erman-Wood on semi-ample Bertini theorems. A key ingredient is the use of motivic Euler products, as introduced by the first au…
A motivic height zeta function associated to a family of varieties parametrised by a curve is the generating series of the classes, in the Grothendieck ring of varieties, of moduli spaces of sections of this family with varying degrees. This text is devoted to the study of the motivic height zeta function associated to a family of varieties with generic fiber having the structure of an equivariant compactification of a vector group. Our main theorem describes the convergence of this motivic height zeta function with respect to a topology on the Grothendieck ring of varieties coming from the th…
We develop the theory of fundamental classes in the setting of motivic homotopy theory. Using this we construct, for any motivic spectrum, an associated bivariant theory in the sense of Fulton-MacPherson. We import the tools of Fulton's intersection theory into this setting: (refined) Gysin maps, specialization maps, and formulas for excess intersections, self-intersections, and blow-ups. We also develop a theory of Euler classes of vector bundles in this setting. For the Milnor-Witt spectrum recently constructed by Déglise-Fasel, we get a bivariant theory extending the Chow-Witt groups of Bar…
For any scheme $M$ with a perfect obstruction theory, Jiang and Thomas associate a scheme $N$ with symmetric perfect obstruction theory. The scheme $N$ is a cone over $M$ given by the dual of the obstruction sheaf of $M$, and contains $M$ as its zero section. Locally $N$ is the critical locus of a regular function. In this note we prove that $N$ is a $d$-critical scheme in the sense of Joyce. By assuming an orientation on $N$ there exists a global motive for $N$ locally given by the motive of vanishing cycles of the local regular function. We prove a motivic localization formula under the good…
We define motivic Milnor fiber of cyclic $L_\infty$-algebras of dimension three using the method of Denef and Loeser of motivic integration. It is proved by Nicaise and Sebag that the topological Euler characteristic of the motivic Milnor fiber is equal to the Euler characteristic of the étale cohomology of the analytic Milnor fiber. We prove that the value of Behrend function on the germ moduli space determined by $L$ is equal to the Euler characteristic of the analytic Milnor fiber. Thus we prove that Behrend function depends only on the formal neighborhood of the moduli space.
Motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes are polynomials with K-theory and homology classes as coefficients, which specialize to Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes, K-theory classes, and Cappell-Shaneson L-classes. We provide formulas to compute the motivic Chern and Hirzebruch classes of Grassmannian and vexillary degeneracy loci. We apply our results to obtain the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus of classical and one-pointed Brill-Noether varieties, and therefore their topological Euler characteristic, holomorphic Euler characteristic, and signature.
In this paper we introduce the notion of a $cdp$-functor to a Waldhausen category. We show that such functors admit extensions that satisfy the excision property, to which we associate Euler-Poincaré characteristics that send the class of a proper scheme to the class of its image. As an application, we show that the Yoneda embedding gives rise to a monoidal proper-fibred Waldhausen category over Noetherian schemes of finite Krull dimensions, with canonical $cdp$-functors to its fibres.
The Poincare series of a multi-index filtration on the ring of germs of functions can be written as a certain integral with respect to the Euler characteristic over the projectivization of the ring. Here this integral is considered with respect to the generalized Euler characteristic with values in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. For the filtration defined by orders of functions on the components of a plane curve singularity $C$ and for the so called divisorial filtration for a modification of $(\C^2,0)$ by a sequence of blowing-ups there are given formulae for this integral in terms of an…
We categorify the inclusion-exclusion principle for partially ordered topological spaces and schemes to a filtration on the derived category of sheaves. As a consequence, we obtain functorial spectral sequences that generalize the two spectral sequences of a stratified space and certain Vassiliev-type spectral sequences; we also obtain Euler characteristic analogs in the Grothendieck ring of varieties. As an application, we give an algebro-geometric proof of Vakil and Wood's homological stability conjecture for the space of smooth hypersurface sections of a smooth projective variety. In charac…
The Euler characteristic of all the Chow varieties, of a fixed projective variety, can be collected in a formal power series called the Euler-Chow series. This series coincides with the Hilbert series when the Picard group is a finite generated free abelian group. It is an interesting open problem to find for which varieties this series is rational. A few cases have been computed, and it is suspected that the series is not rational for the blow up of P^2 at nine points in general position. It is very natural to extend this series to Chow motives and ask the question if the series is rational o…
We develop a power structure over the Grothendieck ring of varieties relative to an abelian monoid, which allows us to compute the motivic class of the generalized Kummer scheme. We obtain a generalized version of Cheah's formula for the Hilbert scheme of points, which specializes to Gulbrandsen's conjecture for Euler characteristics. Moreover, in the surface case we prove a conjecture of Göttsche for geometrically ruled surfaces, and we obtain an explicit formula for the virtual motive of the generalized Kummer scheme in dimension three.
Generalized Burniat surfaces are surfaces of general type with $p_g=q$ and Euler number $e=6$ obtained by a variant of Inoue's construction method for the classical Burniat surfaces. I prove a variant of the Bloch conjecture for these surfaces. The method applies also to the so-called Sicilian surfaces introduced by Bauer, Catanese and Frapporti. This implies that the Chow motives of all of these surfaces are finite-dimensional in the sense of Kimura.
We study Grothedieck groups of triangulated categories using weight structures, weight complexes, and the corresponding pure (co)homological functors. We prove some general statements on $K_0$ of weighted categories and apply it to Voevodsky motives endowed with so-called Chow weight structures. We obtain certain "motivic substitutes" for smooth compactifications of smooth varieties over arbitrary perfect fields; this enables us to make certain unramified cohomology and Euler characteristic calculations that are closely related to results of T. Ekedahl and B. Kahn.
Let $\mathcal{M}(d,χ)$ be the moduli stack of stable sheaves of rank 0, Euler characteristic $χ$ and first Chern class $dH~(d>0)$, with $H$ the hyperplane class in $\mathbb{P}^2$. We compute the $A$-valued motivic measure $μ_A(\mathcal{M}(d,χ))$ of $\mathcal{M}(d,χ)$ and get explicit formula in codimension $D:=ρ_d-1$, where $ρ_d$ is $d-1$ for $d=p$ or $2p$ with $p$ prime, and $7$ otherwise. As a corollary, we get the last $2(D+1)$ Betti numbers of the moduli scheme $M(d,χ)$ when $d$ is coprime to $χ$.
The paper provides computations of the first non-vanishing $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy sheaves of the orthogonal Stiefel varieties which are relevant for the unstable isometry classification of quadratic forms over smooth affine schemes over perfect fields of characteristic $\neq 2$. Together with the $\mathbb{A}^1$-representability for quadratic forms, this provides the first obstructions for rationally trivial quadratic forms to split off a hyperbolic plane. For even-rank quadratic forms, this first obstruction is a refinement of the Euler class of Edidin and Graham. A couple of consequences are…
We show that the Quot scheme $Q_L^n = \textrm{Quot}_{\mathbb A^3}(\mathscr I_L,n)$ parameterising length $n$ quotients of the ideal sheaf of a line in $\mathbb{A}^3$ is a global critical locus, and calculate the resulting motivic partition function (varying $n$), in the ring of relative motives over the configuration space of points in $\mathbb{A}^3$. As in the work of Behrend-Bryan-Szendrői this enables us to define a virtual motive for the Quot scheme of $n$ points of the ideal sheaf $\mathscr I_C\subset \mathscr O_Y$, where $C\subset Y$ is a smooth curve embedded in a smooth 3-fold $Y$, and…
There are (at least) two different approaches to define equivariant analogue of the Euler charateristic for a space with a finite group action. The first one defines it as an element of the Burnside ring of the group. The second approach emerged from physics and includes the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions. Here we suggest a way to merge the two approaches together defining (in a certain setting) higher order Euler characteristics with values in the Burnside ring of a group. We give Macdonald type equations for these invariants. We also offer generalized ("motivic")…
The notion of the orbifold Euler characteristic came from physics at the end of 80's. There were defined higher order versions of the orbifold Euler characteristic and generalized ("motivic") versions of them. In a previous paper the authors defined a notion of the Grothendieck ring $K_0^{\rm fGr}(Var)$ of varieties with actions of finite groups on which the orbifold Euler characteristic and its higher order versions are homomorphisms to the ring of integers. Here we define the generalized orbifold Euler characteristic and higher order versions of it as ring homomorphisms from $K_0^{\rm fGr}(V…
We prove geometric and cohomological stabilization results for the universal smooth degree $d$ hypersurface section of a fixed smooth projective variety as $d$ goes to infinity. We show that relative configuration spaces of the universal smooth hypersurface section stabilize in the completed Grothendieck ring of varieties, and deduce from this the stabilization of the Hodge Euler characteristic of natural families of local systems constructed from the vanishing cohomology. We prove explicit formulas for the stable values using a probabilistic interpretation, along with the natural analogs in p…
We give an explicit conjectural formula for the motivic Euler characteristic of an arbitrary symplectic local system on the moduli space A_3 of principally polarized abelian threefolds. The main term of the formula is a conjectural motive of Siegel modular forms of a certain type; the remaining terms admit a surprisingly simple description in terms of the motivic Euler characteristics for lower genera. The conjecture is based on extensive counts of curves of genus three and abelian threefolds over finite fields. It provides a lot of new information about vector-valued Siegel modular forms of d…
We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with finite groups actions and show that the orbifold Euler characteristic and the Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to the ring of integers. We describe two natural $λ$-structures on the ring and the corresponding power structures over it and show that one of these power structures is effective. We define a Grothendieck ring of varieties with equivariant vector bundles and show that the generalized ("motivic") Euler characteristics of higher orders can be defined as homomorphisms from this ring to t…
The main goal of this paper is to define the so-called Chow weight structure for the category of Beilinson motives over any 'reasonable' base scheme $S$ (this is the version of Voevodsky's motives over $S$ defined by Cisinski and Deglise). We also study the functoriality properties of the Chow weight structure (they are very similar to the well-known functoriality of weights for mixed complexes of sheaves). As shown in a preceding paper, the Chow weight structure automatically yields an exact conservative weight complex functor (with values in $K^b(Chow(S))$). Here $Chow(S)$ is the heart of th…
We introduce a Grothendieck group of algebraic stacks (with affine stabilisers) analogous to the Grothendieck group of algebraic varieties. We then identify it with a certain localisation of the Grothendieck group of algebraic varieties. Several invariants of elements in this group are discussed. The most important is an extension of the Euler characteristic (of cohomology with compact support) but in characteristic zero we introduce invariants which are able to distinguish between classes with the same Euler characteristic. These invariants are actually defined on the completed localised Grot…
