We present a descent style, Bockstein spectral sequence computing Ext over the motivic Steenrod algebra over $\R$ and related sub-Hopf algebras. We demonstrate the workings of this spectral sequence in several examples, providing motivic analogues to the classical computations related to BP<n> and ko.
Using the recent work of Frankland and Spitzweck, we define Steenrod operations $P^{n}$ on the mod $p$ motivic cohomology of smooth varieties defined over a base field of characteristic $p$. We show that $P^{n}$ is the $p$th power on $H^{2n,n}(-,\mathbb{F}_{p})\cong CH^{n}(-)/p$ and prove an instability result for the operations. Restricted to mod $p$ Chow groups, we show that the operations satisfy the expected Adem relations and Cartan formula. For $p=2$, we use the new Steenrod squares to obtain new results on quadratic forms over a base field of characteristic $2$.
This article fills some gaps in Voevodsky's construction of the Steenrod operations acting on the motivic cohomology with coefficients in Z/lZ of motivic spaces in the sense of Morel and Voevodsky over a perfect field of characteristic different from l. Moreover, as a consequence of the method of proof of a theorem by Voevodsky on stable cohomology operations, we show that the spectrum that represents motivic cohomology with coefficients Z/lZ has no nonzero "superphantom" endomorphism.
The purpose of this article is to compute the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over Spec C through the geometric 70-stem. The main computational tool is the motivic May spectral sequence. Everywhere in this article, we are working only over Spec C, and we are always computing at the prime p = 2.
Let S be an essentially smooth scheme over a field and l a prime number invertible on S. We show that the algebra of bistable operations in the mod l motivic cohomology of smooth S-schemes is generated by the motivic Steenrod operations. This was previously proved by Voevodsky for S a field of characteristic zero. We follow Voevodsky's proof but remove its dependence on characteristic zero by using étale cohomology instead of topological realization and by replacing resolution of singularities with a theorem of Gabber on alterations.
We study criteria for freeness and for the existence of a vanishing line for modules over certain Hopf subalgebras of the motivic Steenrod algebra over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{C})$ at the prime 2. These turn out to be determined by the vanishing of certain Margolis homology groups in the quotient Hopf algebra $\mathcal{A}/τ$.
In this paper we explore the isotropic stable motivic homotopy category constructed from the usual stable motivic homotopy category, following the work of Vishik on isotropic motives (see [29]), by killing anisotropic varieties. In particular, we focus on cohomology operations in the isotropic realm and study the structure of the isotropic Steenrod algebra. Then, we construct an isotropic version of the motivic Adams spectral sequence and apply it to find a complete description of the isotropic stable homotopy groups of the sphere spectrum, which happen to be isomorphic to the $Ext$-groups of …
In this paper we begin the study of the (dual) Steenrod algebra of the motivic Witt cohomology spectrum $H_W\mathbb{Z}$ by determining the algebra structure of ${H_W\mathbb{Z}}_{**}H_W\mathbb{Z}$ over fields $k$ of characteristic not $2$ which are extensions of fields $F$ with $K^M_2(F)/2=0$. For example, this includes all fields of odd characteristic, as well as fields that are extensions of quadratically closed fields of characteristic $0$. After inverting $η$, this computes the $HW:=H_W\mathbb{Z}[η^{-1}]$-algebra ${HW}_{**}HW$. In particular, for the given base fields, this implies the $HW$…
In this paper, we show that the finite subalgebra $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{R}}(1)$, generated by $\mathrm{Sq}^1$ and $\mathrm{Sq}^2$, of the $\mathbb{R}$-motivic Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{R}}$ can be given $128$ different $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{R}}$-module structures. We also show that all of these $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{R}}$-modules can be realized as the cohomology of a $2$-local finite $\mathbb{R}$-motivic spectrum. The realization results are obtained using an $\mathbb{R}$ -motivic analogue of the Toda realization theorem. We notice that each realization of $\mathcal{A}^{\mathbb{R}…
The stable Picard group of finite Adams Hopf algebroids with an application to the $\mathbb{R}$-motivic Steenrod subalgebra $\mathcal{A}(1)^{\mathbb{R}}$
Steenrod operations have been defined by Voedvodsky in motivic cohomology in order to show the Milnor and Bloch-Kato conjectures. These operations have also been constructed by Brosnan for Chow rings. The purpose of this paper is to provide a setting for the construction of the Steenrod operations in algebraic geometry, for generalized cohomology theories whose formal group law has order two. We adapt the methods used by Bisson-Joyal in studying Steenrod and Dyer-Lashof operations in unoriented cobordism and mod 2 cohomology.
We present some data on the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over an algebraically closed field. We discuss several features of the associated Adams spectral sequence, including the basic construction and convergence properties. The paper also deals with motivic versions of the May and Adams-Novikov spectral sequences. It is shown how these tools can be used to give new proofs of some classical results in algebraic topology. Also, the considerations reveal the existence of certain "exotic" motivic homotopy classes which have no classical analogues.
We study the Mahowald operator $M = \langle g_2,h_0^3, - \rangle$ in the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra. We show that the operator interacts well with the cohomology of $A(2)$, in both the classical and $\mathbb{C}$-motivic contexts. This generalizes previous work of Margolis, Priddy, and Tangora.
We perform Hochschild homology calculations in the algebro-geometric setting of motives. The motivic Hochschild homology coefficient ring contains torsion classes which arise from the mod-$p$ motivic Steenrod algebra and from generating functions on the natural numbers with finite non-empty support. Under the Betti realization, we recover Bökstedt's calculation of the topological Hochschild homology of finite prime fields.
We compute the h_1-localized cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over C. This serves as the input to an Adams spectral sequence that computes the motivic stable homotopy groups of the eta-local motivic sphere. We compute some of the Adams differentials, and we state a conjecture about the remaining differentials.
We establish a $v_1$-periodicity theorem in Ext over the complex-motivic Steenrod algebra. The element $h_1$ of Ext, which detects the homotopy class $η$ in the motivic Adams spectral sequence, is non-nilpotent and therefore generates $h_1$-towers. Our result is that, apart from these $h_1$-towers, $v_1$-periodicity behaves as it does classically.
A new and natural description of the category of unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra as a category of comodules over a bialgebra is given; the theory extends and unifies the work of Carlsson, Kuhn, Lannes, Miller, Schwartz, Zarati and others. Related categories of comodules are studied, which shed light upon the structure of the category of unstable modules at odd primes. In particular, a category of bigraded unstable modules is introduced; this is related to the study of modules over the motivic Steenrod algebra.
In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.
We construct a motivic Eilenberg-MacLane spectrum with a highly structured multiplication over smooth schemes over Dedekind domains which represents Levine's motivic cohomology. The latter is defined via Bloch's cycle complexes. Our method is by gluing p-completed and rational parts along an arithmetic square. Hereby the finite coefficient spectra are obtained by truncated étale sheaves (relying on the now proven Bloch-Kato conjecture) and a variant of Geisser's version of syntomic cohomology, and the rational spectra are the ones which represent Beilinson motivic cohomology. As an application…
Working over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we compute the cohomology of the subalgebra A(2) of the motivic Steenrod algebra that is generated by Sq^1, Sq^2, and Sq^4. The method of calculation is a motivic version of the May spectral sequence. Speculatively assuming that there is a "motivic modular forms" spectrum with certain properties, we use an Adams-Novikov spectral sequence to compute the homotopy of such a spectrum at the prime 2.
We describe some regular behavior in the motivic wedge, which is a subalgebra of the cohomology Ext$_{\mathbf{A}}(\mathbb{M}_2,\mathbb{M}_2)$ of the $\mathbb{C}$-motivic Steenrod algebra. The key tool is to compare motivic computations to classical computations, to Ext$_{\mathbf{A}(2)}(\mathbb{M}_2,\mathbb{M}_2)$, or to $h_1$-localization of Ext$_{\mathbf{A}}(\mathbb{M}_2,\mathbb{M}_2)$. We also give a conjecture on the behavior of the family $e_0^tg^k$ in Ext$_{\mathbf{A}}(\mathbb{M}_2,\mathbb{M}_2)$ which raises naturally from the study of the motivic wedge.
We make some computations in stable motivic homotopy theory over Spec \mathbb{C}, completed at 2. Using homotopy fixed points and the algebraic K-theory spectrum, we construct a motivic analogue of the real K-theory spectrum KO. We also establish a theory of connective covers to obtain a motivic version of ko. We establish an Adams spectral sequence for computing motivic ko-homology. The E_2-term of this spectral sequence involves Ext groups over the subalgebra A(1) of the motivic Steenrod algebra. We make several explicit computations of these E_2-terms in interesting special cases.
We present a detailed analysis of 2-complete stable homotopy groups, both in the classical context and in the motivic context over C. We use the motivic May spectral sequence to compute the cohomology of the motivic Steenrod algebra over C through the 70-stem. We then use the motivic Adams spectral sequence to obtain motivic stable homotopy groups through the 59-stem. In addition to finding all Adams differentials in this range, we also resolve all hidden extensions by 2, eta, and nu, except for a few carefully enumerated exceptions that remain unknown. The analogous classical stable homotopy …
We compute the cohomology of the subalgebra $A^{C_2}(1)$ of the $C_2$-equivariant Steenrod algebra $A^{C_2}$. This serves as the input to the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence converging to the $RO(C_2)$-graded homotopy groups of an equivariant spectrum $ko_{C_2}$. Our approach is to use simpler $\mathbb{C}$-motivic and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic calculations as stepping stones.
Explicit extensions representing cocycles $x \in Ext_{A}^{s,t}(F_2,F_2)$ are useful in calculating Steenrod operations $Sq^i : Ext_{A}^{s,t}(F_2,F_2) \longrightarrow Ext_{A}^{s+i,2t}(F_2,F_2)$ by a method devised by the second author. This can be used to identify explicit cocycles in the minimal resolutions produced by the first author's computer programs, and this information is useful in determining differentials in the Adams spectral sequence.
We employ the slice spectral sequence, the motivic Steenrod algebra, and Voevodsky's solutions of the Milnor and Bloch-Kato conjectures to calculate the hermitian $K$-groups of rings of integers in number fields. Moreover, we relate the orders of these groups to special values of Dedekind $ζ$-functions for totally real abelian number fields. Our methods apply more readily to the examples of algebraic $K$-theory and higher Witt-theory, and give a complete set of invariants for quadratic forms over rings of integers in number fields.
We exhibit a relationship between motivic homotopy theory and spectral algebraic geometry, based on the motivic $τ$-deformation picture of Gheorghe, Isaksen, Wang, Xu. More precisely, we identify cellular motivic spectra over $\mathbf C$ with ind-coherent sheaves (in a slightly non-standard sense) on a certain spectral stack $τ_{\ge 0}(\mathcal M_\mathrm{FG}^\mathrm{or})$. The latter is the connective cover of the non-connective spectral stack $\mathcal M_\mathrm{FG}^\mathrm{or}$, the moduli stack of oriented formal groups, which we have introduced previously and studied in connection with chr…
Let A be the mod 2 Steenrod algebra, and let Q denote the category of exterior sub-Hopf algebras of A, where the morphisms are given by inclusions. The restriction maps Ext_A (Z/2,Z/2) --> Ext_E (Z/2,Z/2), for E in Q, can be assembled into a map i:Ext_A (Z/2, Z/2) --> lim_Q Ext_E (Z/2,Z/2). There is an action of A on this inverse limit, and i factors through the invariants under this action, giving a map g:Ext_A (Z/2, Z/2) --> ( lim_Q Ext_E (Z/2,Z/2) )^A. We show that g is an F-isomorphism.
First, by inspiration of the results of Wood \cite{differential,problems}, but with the methods of non-commutative geometry and different approach, we extend the coefficients of the Steenrod squaring operations from the filed $\mathbb{F}_2$ to the dyadic integers $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and call the resulted operations the dyadic Steenrod squares, denoted by $Jq^k$. The derivation-like operations $Jq^k$ generate a graded algebra, called the dyadic Steenrod algebra, denoted by $\mathcal{J}_2$ acting on the polynomials $\mathbb{Z}_2[ξ_1, \dots, ξ_n]$. Being $\mathcal{J}_2$ an Ore domain, enable us to loc…
In this paper, we compute ${\rm Ext}_{A}^{s}(\widetilde{H}^*(B\mathbb{Z}/p),\mathbb{F}_p)$ for $s\leq 1$. Using this result, we investigate the behavior of $φ_3^{\mathbb{F}_p}$ and $φ_s^{\widetilde{H}^*(B\mathbb{Z}/p)}\ (s\leq1)$ for an odd prime $p$.
We compute some R-motivic stable homotopy groups. For $s - w \leq 11$, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups $π_{s,w}$ of a completion of the R-motivic sphere spectrum. We apply the $ρ$-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain R-motivic Ext groups from the C-motivic Ext groups, which are well-understood in a large range. These Ext groups are the input to the R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. We fully analyze the Adams differentials in a range, and we also analyze hidden extensions by $ρ$, 2, and $η$. As a consequence of our computations, we recover Mahowald invariants of many low-dimens…
It is shown that the Grayson tower for $K$-theory of smooth algebraic varieties is isomorphic to the slice tower of $S^1$-spectra. We also extend the Grayson tower to bispectra and show that the Grayson motivic spectral sequence is isomorphic to the motivic spectral sequence produced by the Voevodsky slice tower for the motivic $K$-theory spectrum $KGL$. This solves Suslin's problem for these two spectral sequences in the affirmative.
We show that if G is a finite constant group acting on a scheme X such that the order of G is invertible in the residue fields of X, then the G-equivariant motivic stable homotopy category of X is equivalent to the stabilization of the category of motivic G-spaces with finite étale transfers over X at the trivial representation sphere. Along the way we obtain several results of independent interest, among them: we construct and study norms in the motivic homotopy theory of stacks, and we extend the homotopy t-structure to DM-stacks and establish some favorable properties.
The algebra ${\mathsf A}_q$ of Steenrod $q$th powers, where $q = p^e$ is a power of a prime $p$, is isomorphic to a subalgebra ${\mathsf A}'_q$ of the algebra of Steenrod $p$th powers ${\mathsf A}_p$. The filtration of ${\mathsf A}_p$ by powers of its augmentation ideal was studied by J. P. May in his Princeton thesis of 1964. We extend some of May's results to ${\mathsf A}_q$ and obtain a convenient set of defining relations for the graded algebra $E^0({\mathsf A}_q)$. In the case $q=p$, we recover the observation of S. B. Priddy that the subalgebra $E^0({\mathsf A}_p(n-2))$ of $E^0({\mathsf …
In this paper, we study twisted algebraic $K$-theory from a motivic viewpoint. For a smooth variety $X$ over a field of characteristic zero and an Azumaya algebra $\mathcal{A}$ over $X$, we construct the $\mathcal{A}$-twisted motivic spectral sequence, by computing the slices of the motivic twisted algebraic $K$-theory spectrum as a twisted form of motivic cohomology. This generalizes previous results due to Kahn-Levine where $\mathcal{A}$ is assumed to be pulled back from a base field. Our methods use interaction between the slice filtration and birational geometry. Along the way, we prove a …
Soergel bimodules and their Hochschild homology are known to be important in the context of link homology. In this article we observe that Soergel bimodules may be naturally identified as the cohomology of well-defined objects in the category of spectra. This allows us to define forms of Soergel bimodules over the integers after inverting 2, indexed by elements in Braid groups associated to compact Lie groups of adjoint type. Reducing the Soergel bimodules modulo an odd prime, we endow the bimodules with an action of the reduced Steenrod algebra. This action extends to an action of the reduced…
In this article we study thick ideals defined by periodic self maps in the stable motivic homotopy category over $\mathbb{C}$. In addition, we extend some results of Ruth Joachimi about the relation between thick ideals defined by motivic Morava K-theories and the preimages of the thick ideals in the stable homotopy category under Betti realization.
In this paper we completely classify which graded polynomial R-algebras in finitely many even degree variables can occur as the singular cohomology of a space with coefficients in R, a 1960 question of N. E. Steenrod, for a commutative ring R satisfying mild conditions. In the fundamental case R = Z, our result states that the only polynomial cohomology rings over Z which can occur, are tensor products of copies of H^*(CP^\infty;Z) = Z[x_2], H^*(BSU(n);Z) = Z[x_4,x_6,...,x_{2n}], and H^*(BSp(n):Z) = Z[x_4,x_8,...,x_{4n}] confirming an old conjecture. Our classification extends Notbohm's soluti…
Unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra with only the top $k$ operations are introduced in the language of ringoids. We prove the category of such modules has homological dimension at most $k$. A pratical method, which generalizes the $Λ$ complex, to compute the $\mathrm{Ext}$ group from such modules to spheres is proposed. We are also able to establish several functors to relate such modules and unstable modules over the Steenrod algebra, and to describe the connections between the $\mathrm{Ext}$ groups in them.
We use an Adams spectral sequence to calculate the R-motivic stable homotopy groups after inverting eta. The first step is to apply a Bockstein spectral sequence in order to obtain h_1-inverted R-motivic Ext groups, which serve as the input to the eta-inverted R-motivic Adams spectral sequence. The second step is to analyze Adams differentials. The final answer is that the Milnor-Witt (4k-1)-stem has order 2^{u+1}, where u is the 2-adic valuation of 4k. This answer is reminiscent of the classical image of J. We also explore some of the Toda bracket structure of the eta-inverted R-motivic stabl…
Let $F_2$ be the prime field of two elements and let $GL_s:= GL(s, F_2)$ be the general linear group of rank $s.$ Denote by $\mathscr A$ the Steenrod algebra over $F_2.$ The (mod-2) Lambda algebra, $Λ,$ is one of the tools to describe those mysterious "Ext-groups". In addition, the $s$-th algebraic transfer of William Singer \cite{Singer} is also expected to be a useful tool in the study of them. This transfer is a homomorphism $Tr_s: F_2 \otimes_{GL_s}P_{\mathscr A}(H_{*}(B\mathbb V_s, F_2))\to {\rm Ext}_{\mathscr {A}}^{s,s+*}(F_2, F_2),$ where $\mathbb V_s$ denotes the elementary abelian $2$…
We compute the homotopy groups of the η-periodic motivic sphere spectrum over a finite-dimensional field k with characteristic not 2 and in which -1 a sum of four squares. We also study the general characteristic 0 case and show that the η-periodic slice spectral sequence over Q determines the η-periodic slice spectral sequence over all extensions of Q. This leads to a speculation on the role of a "connective Witt-theoretic J-spectrum" in η-periodic motivic homotopy theory.
We prove a new convergence result for the slice spectral sequence, following work by Levine and Voevodsky. This verifies a derived variant of Voevodsky's conjecture on convergence of the slice spectral sequence. This is, in turn, a necessary ingredient for our main theorem: a Thomason-style étale descent result for the Bott-inverted motivic sphere spectrum, which generalizes and extends previous étale descent results for special examples of motivic cohomology theories. Combined with first author's étale rigidity results, we obtain a complete structural description of the étale motivic stable c…
This article computes some motivic stable homotopy groups over R. For 0 <= p - q <= 3, we describe the motivic stable homotopy groups of a completion of the motivic sphere spectrum. These are the first four Milnor-Witt stems. We start with the known Ext groups over C and apply the rho-Bockstein spectral sequence to obtain Ext groups over R. This is the input to an Adams spectral sequence, which collapses in our low dimensional range.
