Let G be a finite group. For semi-free G-manifolds which are oriented in the sense of Waner, the homotopy classes of G-equivariant maps into a G-sphere are described in terms of their degrees, and the degrees occurring are characterized in terms of congruences. This is first shown to be a stable problem and then solved using methods of equivariant stable homotopy theory with respect to a semi-free G-universe.
We study otopy classes of equivariant local maps and prove the Hopf type theorem for such maps in the case of a real finite dimensional orthogonal representation of a compact Lie group.
The first author's geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map $F:Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}Y$ is a stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant map $h(F):Σ^{\infty}X \to Σ^{\infty}(Y \wedge Y)$ constructed by an explicit difference construction applied to $(F \wedge F)Δ_X - Δ_Y F$. The stable ${\mathbb Z}_2$-equivariant homotopy class of $h(F)$ is the primary obstruction to desuspending $F$ up to homotopy. The explicit nature of the construction allows for a $π$-equivariant version of $h(F)$ in the case of a $π$-equivariant $F$, with $π$ a discrete group. In earlier joint work we applied the $π_1(N)$-equi…
We construct a degree-type otopy invariant for equivariant gradient local maps in the case of a real finite dimensional orthogonal representation of a compact Lie group. We prove that the invariant establishes a bijection between the set of equivariant gradient otopy classes and the direct sum of countably many copies of $\mathbb{Z}$.
In this article, the comodule structure of Chow rings of Flag manifolds $\operatorname{CH}(G/B)$ is described by Schubert cells. Its equivariant version gives rise to a Hopf structure of the equivariant cohomology of flag manifolds $H^*_B(G/B)$. We get two identities of generalized Schubert polynomials as explanations of the geometric facts.
The geometric Hopf invariant of a stable map F is a stable Z_2-equivariant map h(F) such that the stable Z_2-equivariant homotopy class of h(F) is the primary obstruction to F being homotopic to an unstable map. In this paper we express the geometric Hopf invariant of the Umkehr map F of an immersion f:M^m \to N^n in terms of the double point set of f. We interpret the Smale-Hirsch-Haefliger regular homotopy classification of immersions f in the metastable dimension range 3m<2n-1 (when a generic f has no triple points) in terms of the geometric Hopf invariant.
We give a general framework of equivariant model category theory. Our groups G, called Hopf groups, are suitably defined group objects in any well-behaved symmetric monoidal category V. For any V, a discrete group G gives a Hopf group, denoted I[G]. When V is cartesian monoidal, the Hopf groups are just the group objects in V. When V is the category of modules over a commutative ring R, I[G] is the group ring R[G] and the general Hopf groups are the cocommutative Hopf algebras over R. We show how all of the usual constructs of equivariant homotopy theory, both categorical and model theoretic, …
A classical theorem of H. Hopf asserts that a closed connected smooth manifold admits a nowhere vanishing vector field if and only if its Euler characteristic is zero. R. Brown generalized Hopf's result to topological manifolds, replacing vector fields with path fields. In this note, we give an equivariant analog of Brown's theorem for locally smooth $G$-manifolds where $G$ is a finite group.
We survey generalisations of the Chang-Skjelbred Lemma for integral coefficients. Moreover, we construct examples of manifolds with actions of tori of rank > 2 whose equivariant cohomology is torsion-free, but not free. This answers a question of Allday's. The "mutants" we construct are obtained from compactified representations and involve Hopf bundles in a crucial way.
In this paper a geometric approach toward stable homotopy groups of spheres, based on the Pontrjagin-Thom construction is proposed. From this approach a new proof of Hopf Invariant One Theorem by J.F.Adams for all dimensions except $15,31,63,127$ is obtained. It is proved that for $n>127$ in the stable homotopy group of spheres $Π_n$ there is no elements with Hopf invariant one. The new proof is based on geometric topology methods. The Pontrjagin-Thom Theorem (in the form proposed by R.Wells) about the representation of stable homotopy groups of the real projective infinite-dimensional space (…
In this article we extend the classical definitions of equivariant cohomotopy theory to the setting of proper actions of Lie groups. We combine methods originally developed in the analysis of nonlinear differential equations, mainly in connection with Leray-Schauder theory, and on the other hand from developments of equivariant $K$-Theory by N.C. Phillips. We prove the correspondence with a previous construction of W. Lück by constructing an index. As an illustration of these methods, we introduce a Burnside ring defined in analytical terms. With this definition, we extend a weak version of th…
For any finite group G, we show that the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, indexed on a complete G-universe, has a unique equivariant model in the sense of Quillen model categories. This means that the suspension functor, homotopy cofiber sequences and the stable Burnside category determine all "higher order structure" of the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, such as the equivariant homotopy types of function G-spaces. The theorem can be seen as an equivariant version of Schwede's rigidity theorem at the prime 2.
For groups of prime order, equivariant stable maps between equivariant representation spheres are investigated using the Borel cohomology Adams spectral sequence. Features of the equivariant stable homotopy category, such as stability and duality, are shown to lift to the category of modules over the associated Steenrod algebra. The dependence on the dimension functions of the representations is clarified.
We establish an isomorphism between the stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed motivic sphere spectrum over the real numbers and the corresponding stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed Z/2-equivariant sphere spectrum, in a certain range of dimensions.
We show that the $C_2$-equivariant and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic stable homotopy groups are isomorphic in a range. This result supersedes previous work of Dugger and the third author.
In this paper, we construct incomplete versions of the equivariant stable category; i.e., equivariant stabilization of the category of $G$-spaces with respect to incomplete systems of transfers encoded by an $N_\infty$ operad $\mathcal{O}$. These categories are built from the categories of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $G$-spaces. Using this operadic formulation, we establish incomplete versions of the usual structural properties of the equivariant stable category, notably the tom Dieck splitting. Our work is motivated in part by the examples arising from the equivariant units and Picard space fun…
We use the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence to compute part of the $C_2$-equivariant stable homotopy groups $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$. This allows us to recover results of Bredon and Landweber on the image of the geometric fixed-points map from the equivariant homotopy group $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$ to the classical $π_0$. We also recover results of Mahowald and Ravenel on the Mahowald root invariants of the elements $2^k$.
Greenlees defined an abelian category A whose derived category is equivalent to the rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy category whose objects represent rational S^1-equivariant cohomology theories. We show that in fact the model category of differential graded objects in A (dgA) models the whole rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy theory. That is, we show that there is a Quillen equivalence between dgA and the model category of rational S^1-equivariant spectra, before the quasi-isomorphisms or stable equivalences have been inverted. This implies that all of the higher order structur…
We give a method for computing the C_2-equivariant homotopy groups of the Betti realization of a p-complete cellular motivic spectrum over R in terms of its motivic homotopy groups. More generally, we show that Betti realization presents the C_2-equivariant p-complete stable homotopy category as a localization of the p-complete cellular real motivic stable homotopy category.
We classify thick tensor ideals of finite objects in the category of rational torus-equivariant spectra, showing that they are completely determined by geometric isotropy. This is essentially equivalent to showing that the Balmer spectrum is the set of closed subgroups under cotoral inclusion. Corresponding statements are deduced for toral spectra for general groups.
Building on the work of Martin Stolz, we develop the basics of equivariant stable homotopy theory starting from the simple idea that a G- spectrum should just be a spectrum with an action of G on it, in contrast to the usual approach in which the definition of a G-spectrum depends on a choice of universe.
We introduce the notion of a strongly homotopy-comultiplicative resolution of a module coalgebra over a chain Hopf algebra, which we apply to proving a comultiplicative enrichment of a well-known theorem of Moore concerning the homology of quotient spaces of group actions. The importance of our enriched version of Moore's theorem lies in its application to the construction of useful cochain algebra models for computing multiplicative structure in equivariant cohomology. In the special cases of homotopy orbits of circle actions on spaces and of group actions on simplicial sets, we obtain small,…
In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
A geometric approach to the stable homotopy groups of spheres is developed in this paper, based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction. The task of this approach is to obtain an alternative proof of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel theorem [H-H-R] on Kervaire invariants in all dimensions, except, possibly, a finite number of dimensions. In the framework of this approach, the Adams theorem on the Hopf invariant is studied, for all dimensions with the exception of 15, 31, 63, 127. The new approach is based on the methods of geometric topology.
We investigate certain adjunctions in derived categories of equivariant spectra, including a right adjoint to fixed points, a right adjoint to pullback by an isometry of universes, and a chain of two right adjoints to geometric fixed points. This leads to a variety of interesting other adjunctions, including a chain of 6 (sometimes 7) adjoints involving the restriction functor to a subgroup of a finite group on equivariant spectra indexed over the trivial universe.
We give details of models for rational torus equivariant homotopy theory based on (a) all subgroups, connected subgroups or dimensions of subgroups and (b) on pairs or general flags. We provide comparison functors and show the models are equivalent. This is used in (A) An algebraic model for rational torus equivariant spectra (with B.Shipley; the new version of 1101.2511), (B) An algebraic model for the toral part of rational equivariant G-spectra for an arbitrary compact Lie group (1501.03425) and (C) construction of torus equivariant spectra from algebraic geometric data. It also highlights …
Equivariant homotopy methods developed over the last 20 years lead to recent breakthroughs in the Borel isomorphism conjectures for Loday assembly maps in K- and L-theories. An important consequence of these algebraic conjectures is the topological rigidity of compact aspherical manifolds. Our goal is to strip the basic idea to the core and follow the evolution over time in order to explain the advantages of the flexible state that exists today. We end with an outline of the proof of the Borel conjecture in algebraic K-theory for groups of finite asymptotic dimension. We also discuss the relat…
Suppose one is given a discrete group G, a cocompact proper G-manifold M, and a G-self-map f of M. Then we introduce the equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is globally defined in terms of cellular chain complexes, and the local equivariant Lefschetz class of f, which is locally defined in terms of fixed point data. We prove the equivariant Lefschetz fixed point theorem, which says that these two classes agree. As a special case, we prove an equivariant Poincare-Hopf Theorem, computing the universal equivariant Euler characteristic in terms of the zeros of an equivariant vector field, and …
We prove that the $v_1$-local $G$-equivariant stable homotopy category for $G$ a finite group has a unique $G$-equivariant model at $p=2$. This means that at the prime $2$ the homotopy theory of $G$-spectra up to fixed point equivalences on $K$-theory is uniquely determined by its triangulated homotopy category and basic Mackey structure. The result combines the rigidity result for $K$-local spectra of the second author with the equivariant rigidity result for $G$-spectra of the first author. Further, when the prime $p$ is at least $5$ and does not divide the order of $G$, we provide an algebr…
We study thick ideals in the stable motivic homotopy category SH(k) and in its subcategories of compact and of finite cellular objects. If k is a subfield of the complex or even the real numbers, then using comparison functors we find thick ideals corresponding to thick ideals in classical or Z/2-equivariant stable homotopy theory, respectively. We also study motivic Morava K-theories AK(n), for which we prove the motivic analogue of the decomposition of the Bousfield class of E(n) into Bousfield classes of K(i)'s over the complex numbers if p>2. In that case we also prove that AK(n)-acyclicit…
Let $G$ be a finite group. For a based $G$-space $X$ and a Mackey functor $M$, a topological Mackey functor $X\widetilde\otimes M$ is constructed, which will be called the stable equivariant abelianization of $X$ with coefficients in $M$. When $X$ is a based $G$-CW complex, $X\widetilde\otimes M$ is shown to be an infinite loop space in the sense of $\mathcal{G}$-spaces. This gives a version of the $RO(G)$-graded equivariant Dold-Thom theorem. Applying a variant of Elmendorf's construction, we get a model for the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $HM$. The proof uses a structure theorem for Mackey f…
We study how smashing Bousfield localizations behave under various equivariant functors. We show that the analogs of the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems for the Real Johnson-Wilson theories $E_{\mathbb{R}}(n)$ hold only after Borel completion. We establish analogous results for the $C_{2^n}$-equivariant Johnson-Wilson theories constructed by Beaudry, Hill, Shi, and Zeng. We show that induced localizations upgrade the available norms for an $N_\infty$-algebra, and we determine which new norms appear. Finally, we explore generalizations of our results on smashing localizations i…
We develop a mechanism of "isotropy separation for compact objects" that explicitly describes an invertible $G$-spectrum through its collection of geometric fixed points and gluing data located in certain variants of the stable module category. As an application, we carry out a complete analysis of invertible G-spectra in the case $G=A_5$. A further application is given by showing that the Picard groups of $\mathrm{Sp}^G$ and a category of derived Mackey functors agree.
Let $A$ be a cocommutative finite dimensional Hopf algebra over the field with two elements, satisfying some mild hypothesis. We set up a descent spectral sequence which computes the Picard group of the stable category of modules over $A$. The starting point is the observation that the stable category of $A$-modules can be reconstructed, as an $\infty$-category, as the totalization of a cosimplicial $\infty$-category whose layers are related to the stable categories of modules over the quasi-elementary sub-Hopf-algebras of $A$. This leads to a spectral sequence computing the Picard group which…
A spectral sequence calculating the homology groups of some spaces of maps equivariant under compact group actions is described. For the main example, we calculate the rational homology groups of spaces of even and odd maps $S^m \to S^M$, $m<M$, or, which is the same, the stable homology groups of spaces of non-resultant homogeneous polynomial maps ${\mathbb R}^{m+1} \to {\mathbb R}^{M+1}$ of growing degrees. Also, we find the homology groups of spaces of ${\mathbb Z}_r$-equivariant maps of odd-dimensional spheres for any $r$. As a technical tool, we calculate the homology groups of configurat…
We use Cayley-Dickson algebras to produce Hopf elements eta, nu and sigma in the motivic stable homotopy groups of spheres, and we prove via geometric arguments that the the products eta*nu and nu*sigma both vanish. Along the way we develop several basic facts about the motivic stable homotopy ring.
In this short note, we compute the rational $C_{2^n}$-equivariant stable stems and give minimal presentations for the $RO(C_{2^n})$-graded Bredon cohomology of the equivariant classifying spaces $B_{C_{2^n}}S^1$ and $B_{C_{2^n}}Σ_2$ over the rational Burnside functor $A_{\mathbf Q}$. We also examine for which compact Lie groups $L$ the maximal torus inclusion $T\to L$ induces an isomorphism from $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}L;A_{\mathbf Q})$ onto the fixed points of $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}T;A_{\mathbf Q})$ under the Weyl group action. We prove that this holds for $L=U(m)$ and any $n,m\ge 1$ bu…
We define equivariant projective unitary stable bundles as the appropriate twists when defining K-theory as sections of bundles with fibers the space of Fredholm operators over a Hilbert space. We construct universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundles for the orbit types, and we use a specific model for these local universal spaces in order to glue them to obtain a universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle for discrete and proper actions. We determine the homotopy type of the universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle, and we show that the isomorphism classe…
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the category of equivariant diagram spectra indexed on the category W_G of based G-spaces homeomorphic to finite G-CW-complexes for a compact Lie group G. Using the machinery of Mandell, May, Schwede, and Shipley, we show that there is a "stable model structure" on this category of diagram spectra which admits a monoidal Quillen equivalence to the category of orthogonal G-spectra. We construct a second "absolute stable model structure" which is Quillen equivalent to the "stable model structure". Our main result is a concrete identification of the…
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
We propose a construction of an analogue of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel relative norm $N_{H}^{G}$ in the context of a positive dimensional compact Lie group $G$ and closed subgroup $H$. We explore expected properties of the construction. We show that in the case when $G$ is the circle group (the unit complex numbers), the proposed construction here agrees with the relative norm constructed by Angeltveit, Gerhardt, Lawson, and the authors using the cyclic bar construction. Our construction is based on a new perspective on equivariant factorization homology, using framings to convert from actions o…
After we have given a survey on the Burnside ring of a finite group, we discuss and analyze various extensions of this notion to infinite (discrete) groups. The first three are the finite-G-set-version, the inverse-limit-version and the covariant Burnside group. The most sophisticated one is the fourth definition as the equivariant zero-th cohomotopy of the classifying space for proper actions. In order to make sense of this definition we define equivariant cohomotopy groups of finite proper equivariant CW-complexes in terms of maps between the sphere bundles associated to equivariant vector b…
Let G be a topological group such that its homology H(G) with coefficients in a principal ideal domain R is an exterior algebra, generated in odd degrees. We show that the singular cochain functor carries the duality between G-spaces and spaces over BG to the Koszul duality between modules up to homotopy over H(G) and H^*(BG). This gives in particular a Cartan-type model for the equivariant cohomology of a G-space. As another corollary, we obtain a multiplicative quasi-isomorphism C^*(BG) -> H^*(BG). A key step in the proof is to show that a differential Hopf algebra is formal in the category …
This book introduces a new context for global homotopy theory, i.e., equivariant homotopy theory with universal symmetries. Many important equivariant theories naturally exist not just for a particular group, but in a uniform way for all groups in a specific class. Prominent examples are equivariant stable homotopy, equivariant $K$-theory or equivariant bordism. Global equivariant homotopy theory studies such uniform phenomena, i.e., the adjective `global' refers to simultaneous and compatible actions of all compact Lie groups. We give a self-contained treatment of unstable and stable global h…
The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tow…
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of subgroups of $G$. We introduce a class of $G$-equivariant spectra that we call $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent. This definition fits into the general theory of torsion, complete, and nilpotent objects in a symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category, with which we begin. We then develop some of the basic properties of $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent $G$-spectra, which are explored further in the sequel to this paper. In the rest of the paper, we prove several general structure theorems for $\infty$-categories of module spectra over objects such as…
We investigate the particular properties of the stable category of modules over a finite dimensional cocommutative graded connected Hopf algebra $A$, via tensor-triangulated geometry. This study requires some mild conditions on the Hopf algebra $A$ under consideration (satisfied for example by all finite sub-Hopf-algebras of the modulo $2$ Steenrod algebra). In particular, we study some particular covers of its spectrum of prime ideals $\mathrm{Spc}(A)$, which are related to Margolis' Work. We then exploit the existence of Margolis' Postnikov towers in this situation to show that the localizat…
The aim of this note is to provide a comprehensive treatment of the homotopy theory of $Γ$-$G$-spaces for $G$ a finite group. We introduce two level and stable model structures on $Γ$-$G$-spaces and exhibit Quillen adjunctions to $G$-symmetric spectra with respect to a flat level and a stable flat model structure respectively. Then we give a proof that $Γ$-$G$-spaces model connective equivariant stable homotopy theory along the lines of the proof in the non-equivariant setting given by Bousfield and Friedlander. Furthermore, we study the smash product of $Γ$-$G$-spaces and show that the functo…
Replacing configurations of points by configurations of tubular neighbourhoods (or discs) in a manifold, we are able to define a natural scanning map that is equivariant under the action of the diffeomorphism group of the manifold. We also construct the so-called power set map of configuration spaces diffeomorphism equivariantly. Combining these two constructions yields stable splittings in the sense of Snaith and generalisations thereof that are equivariant. In particular one deduces stable splittings of homotopy orbit spaces. As an application the homology injectivity is proved for diffeomor…
