Let $G$ be a finite group. For a based $G$-space $X$ and a Mackey functor $M$, a topological Mackey functor $X\widetilde\otimes M$ is constructed, which will be called the stable equivariant abelianization of $X$ with coefficients in $M$. When $X$ is a based $G$-CW complex, $X\widetilde\otimes M$ is shown to be an infinite loop space in the sense of $\mathcal{G}$-spaces. This gives a version of the $RO(G)$-graded equivariant Dold-Thom theorem. Applying a variant of Elmendorf's construction, we get a model for the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum $HM$. The proof uses a structure theorem for Mackey functors and our previous results.
Let $X$ be a topological space upon which a compact connected Lie group $G$ acts. It is well-known that the equivariant cohomology $H_G^*(X;\Q)$ is isomorphic to the subalgebra of Weyl group invariants of the equivariant cohomology $H_T^*(X;\Q)$, where $T$ is a maximal torus of $G$. This relationship breaks down for coefficient rings $\k$ other than $\Q$. Instead, we prove that under a mild condition on $\k$ the algebra $H_G^*(X,\k)$ is isomorphic to the subalgebra of $H_T^*(X,\k)$ annihilated by the divided difference operators.
For any finite group G, we show that the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, indexed on a complete G-universe, has a unique equivariant model in the sense of Quillen model categories. This means that the suspension functor, homotopy cofiber sequences and the stable Burnside category determine all "higher order structure" of the 2-local G-equivariant stable homotopy category, such as the equivariant homotopy types of function G-spaces. The theorem can be seen as an equivariant version of Schwede's rigidity theorem at the prime 2.
For groups of prime order, equivariant stable maps between equivariant representation spheres are investigated using the Borel cohomology Adams spectral sequence. Features of the equivariant stable homotopy category, such as stability and duality, are shown to lift to the category of modules over the associated Steenrod algebra. The dependence on the dimension functions of the representations is clarified.
We establish an isomorphism between the stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed motivic sphere spectrum over the real numbers and the corresponding stable homotopy groups of the 2-completed Z/2-equivariant sphere spectrum, in a certain range of dimensions.
We show that the $C_2$-equivariant and $\mathbb{R}$-motivic stable homotopy groups are isomorphic in a range. This result supersedes previous work of Dugger and the third author.
In this paper, we construct incomplete versions of the equivariant stable category; i.e., equivariant stabilization of the category of $G$-spaces with respect to incomplete systems of transfers encoded by an $N_\infty$ operad $\mathcal{O}$. These categories are built from the categories of $\mathcal{O}$-algebras in $G$-spaces. Using this operadic formulation, we establish incomplete versions of the usual structural properties of the equivariant stable category, notably the tom Dieck splitting. Our work is motivated in part by the examples arising from the equivariant units and Picard space fun…
We use the $C_2$-equivariant Adams spectral sequence to compute part of the $C_2$-equivariant stable homotopy groups $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$. This allows us to recover results of Bredon and Landweber on the image of the geometric fixed-points map from the equivariant homotopy group $π^{C_2}_{n,n}$ to the classical $π_0$. We also recover results of Mahowald and Ravenel on the Mahowald root invariants of the elements $2^k$.
Greenlees defined an abelian category A whose derived category is equivalent to the rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy category whose objects represent rational S^1-equivariant cohomology theories. We show that in fact the model category of differential graded objects in A (dgA) models the whole rational S^1-equivariant stable homotopy theory. That is, we show that there is a Quillen equivalence between dgA and the model category of rational S^1-equivariant spectra, before the quasi-isomorphisms or stable equivalences have been inverted. This implies that all of the higher order structur…
We classify thick tensor ideals of finite objects in the category of rational torus-equivariant spectra, showing that they are completely determined by geometric isotropy. This is essentially equivalent to showing that the Balmer spectrum is the set of closed subgroups under cotoral inclusion. Corresponding statements are deduced for toral spectra for general groups.
Building on the work of Martin Stolz, we develop the basics of equivariant stable homotopy theory starting from the simple idea that a G- spectrum should just be a spectrum with an action of G on it, in contrast to the usual approach in which the definition of a G-spectrum depends on a choice of universe.
In this paper, we produce a cellular motivic spectrum of motivic modular forms over $\R$ and $\C$, answering positively to a conjecture of Dan Isaksen. This spectrum is constructed to have the appropriate cohomology, as a module over the relevant motivic Steenrod algebra. We first produce a $\G$-equivariant version of this spectrum, and then use a machinery to construct a motivic spectrum from an equivariant one. We believe that this machinery will be of independent interest.
We provide a calculational method for rational stable equivariant homotopy theory for a torus G based on the homology of the Borel construction on fixed points. More precisely we define an abelian torsion model, A_t(G) of finite injective dimension, a homology theory \piAt_* taking values in A_t(G) based on the homology of the Borel construction, and a finite Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A_t(G)}^{*,*}(\piAt_*(X), \piAt_*(Y)) ==> [X,Y]^G_* for rational G-spectra X and Y.
We determine the abelianizations of the following three kinds of graded Lie algebras in certain stable ranges: derivations of the free associative algebra, derivations of the free Lie algebra and symplectic derivations of the free associative algebra. In each case, we consider both the whole derivation Lie algebra and its ideal consisting of derivations with positive degrees. As an application of the last case, and by making use of a theorem of Kontsevich, we obtain a new proof of the vanishing theorem of Harer concerning the top rational cohomology group of the mapping class group with respec…
We investigate certain adjunctions in derived categories of equivariant spectra, including a right adjoint to fixed points, a right adjoint to pullback by an isometry of universes, and a chain of two right adjoints to geometric fixed points. This leads to a variety of interesting other adjunctions, including a chain of 6 (sometimes 7) adjoints involving the restriction functor to a subgroup of a finite group on equivariant spectra indexed over the trivial universe.
We give details of models for rational torus equivariant homotopy theory based on (a) all subgroups, connected subgroups or dimensions of subgroups and (b) on pairs or general flags. We provide comparison functors and show the models are equivalent. This is used in (A) An algebraic model for rational torus equivariant spectra (with B.Shipley; the new version of 1101.2511), (B) An algebraic model for the toral part of rational equivariant G-spectra for an arbitrary compact Lie group (1501.03425) and (C) construction of torus equivariant spectra from algebraic geometric data. It also highlights …
We study thick ideals in the stable motivic homotopy category SH(k) and in its subcategories of compact and of finite cellular objects. If k is a subfield of the complex or even the real numbers, then using comparison functors we find thick ideals corresponding to thick ideals in classical or Z/2-equivariant stable homotopy theory, respectively. We also study motivic Morava K-theories AK(n), for which we prove the motivic analogue of the decomposition of the Bousfield class of E(n) into Bousfield classes of K(i)'s over the complex numbers if p>2. In that case we also prove that AK(n)-acyclicit…
We study how smashing Bousfield localizations behave under various equivariant functors. We show that the analogs of the smash product and chromatic convergence theorems for the Real Johnson-Wilson theories $E_{\mathbb{R}}(n)$ hold only after Borel completion. We establish analogous results for the $C_{2^n}$-equivariant Johnson-Wilson theories constructed by Beaudry, Hill, Shi, and Zeng. We show that induced localizations upgrade the available norms for an $N_\infty$-algebra, and we determine which new norms appear. Finally, we explore generalizations of our results on smashing localizations i…
We develop a mechanism of "isotropy separation for compact objects" that explicitly describes an invertible $G$-spectrum through its collection of geometric fixed points and gluing data located in certain variants of the stable module category. As an application, we carry out a complete analysis of invertible G-spectra in the case $G=A_5$. A further application is given by showing that the Picard groups of $\mathrm{Sp}^G$ and a category of derived Mackey functors agree.
A spectral sequence calculating the homology groups of some spaces of maps equivariant under compact group actions is described. For the main example, we calculate the rational homology groups of spaces of even and odd maps $S^m \to S^M$, $m<M$, or, which is the same, the stable homology groups of spaces of non-resultant homogeneous polynomial maps ${\mathbb R}^{m+1} \to {\mathbb R}^{M+1}$ of growing degrees. Also, we find the homology groups of spaces of ${\mathbb Z}_r$-equivariant maps of odd-dimensional spheres for any $r$. As a technical tool, we calculate the homology groups of configurat…
In this short note, we compute the rational $C_{2^n}$-equivariant stable stems and give minimal presentations for the $RO(C_{2^n})$-graded Bredon cohomology of the equivariant classifying spaces $B_{C_{2^n}}S^1$ and $B_{C_{2^n}}Σ_2$ over the rational Burnside functor $A_{\mathbf Q}$. We also examine for which compact Lie groups $L$ the maximal torus inclusion $T\to L$ induces an isomorphism from $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}L;A_{\mathbf Q})$ onto the fixed points of $H^*_{C_{2^n}}(B_{C_{2^n}}T;A_{\mathbf Q})$ under the Weyl group action. We prove that this holds for $L=U(m)$ and any $n,m\ge 1$ bu…
In this paper, we investigate the properties of the category of equivariant diagram spectra indexed on the category W_G of based G-spaces homeomorphic to finite G-CW-complexes for a compact Lie group G. Using the machinery of Mandell, May, Schwede, and Shipley, we show that there is a "stable model structure" on this category of diagram spectra which admits a monoidal Quillen equivalence to the category of orthogonal G-spectra. We construct a second "absolute stable model structure" which is Quillen equivalent to the "stable model structure". Our main result is a concrete identification of the…
We construct an abelian category A(G) of sheaves over a category of closed subgroups of the r-torus G and show it is of finite injective dimension. It can be used as a model for rational $G$-spectra in the sense that there is a homology theory \piA_*: G-spectra/Q --> A(G) on rational G-spectra with values in A(G), and the associated Adams spectral sequence converges for all rational $G$-spectra and collapses at a finite stage.
We propose a construction of an analogue of the Hill-Hopkins-Ravenel relative norm $N_{H}^{G}$ in the context of a positive dimensional compact Lie group $G$ and closed subgroup $H$. We explore expected properties of the construction. We show that in the case when $G$ is the circle group (the unit complex numbers), the proposed construction here agrees with the relative norm constructed by Angeltveit, Gerhardt, Lawson, and the authors using the cyclic bar construction. Our construction is based on a new perspective on equivariant factorization homology, using framings to convert from actions o…
After we have given a survey on the Burnside ring of a finite group, we discuss and analyze various extensions of this notion to infinite (discrete) groups. The first three are the finite-G-set-version, the inverse-limit-version and the covariant Burnside group. The most sophisticated one is the fourth definition as the equivariant zero-th cohomotopy of the classifying space for proper actions. In order to make sense of this definition we define equivariant cohomotopy groups of finite proper equivariant CW-complexes in terms of maps between the sphere bundles associated to equivariant vector b…
This book introduces a new context for global homotopy theory, i.e., equivariant homotopy theory with universal symmetries. Many important equivariant theories naturally exist not just for a particular group, but in a uniform way for all groups in a specific class. Prominent examples are equivariant stable homotopy, equivariant $K$-theory or equivariant bordism. Global equivariant homotopy theory studies such uniform phenomena, i.e., the adjective `global' refers to simultaneous and compatible actions of all compact Lie groups. We give a self-contained treatment of unstable and stable global h…
The non-equivariant topology of Stiefel manifolds has been studied extensively, culminating in a result of Miller demonstrating that a Stiefel manifold splits stably to a wedge of Thom spaces over Grassmannians. Equivariantly, one can consider spaces of isometries between representations as an analogue to Stiefel manifolds. This concept, however, yields a different theory to the non-equivariant case. We first construct a variation on the theory of the functional calculus before studying the homotopy-theoretic properties of this theory. This allows us to construct the main result; a natural tow…
The aim of this note is to provide a comprehensive treatment of the homotopy theory of $Γ$-$G$-spaces for $G$ a finite group. We introduce two level and stable model structures on $Γ$-$G$-spaces and exhibit Quillen adjunctions to $G$-symmetric spectra with respect to a flat level and a stable flat model structure respectively. Then we give a proof that $Γ$-$G$-spaces model connective equivariant stable homotopy theory along the lines of the proof in the non-equivariant setting given by Bousfield and Friedlander. Furthermore, we study the smash product of $Γ$-$G$-spaces and show that the functo…
Replacing configurations of points by configurations of tubular neighbourhoods (or discs) in a manifold, we are able to define a natural scanning map that is equivariant under the action of the diffeomorphism group of the manifold. We also construct the so-called power set map of configuration spaces diffeomorphism equivariantly. Combining these two constructions yields stable splittings in the sense of Snaith and generalisations thereof that are equivariant. In particular one deduces stable splittings of homotopy orbit spaces. As an application the homology injectivity is proved for diffeomor…
We prove that if G is the circle group or a profinite group, then the all of the homotopical information of the category of rational G-spectra is captured by triangulated structure of the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category. That is, for G profinite or S1, the rational G-equivariant stable homotopy category is rigid. For the case of profinite groups this rigidity comes from an intrinsic formality statement, so we carefully relate the notion of intrinsic formality of a differential graded algebra to rigidity.
In previous work it is shown that there is an abelian category A(G) constructed to model rational G-equivariant cohomology theories, where G is a torus of rank r together with a homology functor \piA_* : Gspectra ---> A(G), and an Adams spectral sequence Ext_{A (G)} (\piA_*(X), \piA_*(Y)) ===> [X,Y]^G_* In joint work with Shipley (arxiv:1101.2511), it is shown that the Adams spectral sequence can be lifted to a Quillen equivalence Rational-Gspectra = DG-A (G). The purpose of the present paper is to prove that A(G) has injective dimension precisely r, and to construct certain torsion functors a…
For a finite group $G$, there is a map $RO(G) \to {\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ from the real representation ring of $G$ to the Picard group of $G$-spectra. This map is not known to be surjective in general, but we prove that when $G$ is cyclic this map is indeed surjective and in that case we describe ${\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ explicitly. We also show that for an arbitrary finite group $G$ homology and cohomology with coefficients in a cohomological Mackey functor do not see the part of ${\rm Pic}(Sp^G)$ coming from the Picard group of the Burnside ring. Hence these homology and cohomology calculations can be gra…
We give a method for computing the C_2-equivariant homotopy groups of the Betti realization of a p-complete cellular motivic spectrum over R in terms of its motivic homotopy groups. More generally, we show that Betti realization presents the C_2-equivariant p-complete stable homotopy category as a localization of the p-complete cellular real motivic stable homotopy category.
We establish natural splittings for the values of global Mackey functors at orthogonal, unitary and symplectic groups. In particular, the restriction homomorphisms between the orthogonal, unitary and symplectic groups of adjacent dimensions are naturally split epimorphisms. The interest in the splitting comes from equivariant stable homotopy theory. The equivariant stable homotopy groups of every global spectrum form a global Mackey functor, so the splittings imply that certain long exact homotopy group sequences separate into short exact sequences. For the real and complex global Thom spectra…
We introduce a notion of freeness for $RO$-graded equivariant generalized homology theories, considering spaces or spectra $E$ such that the $R$-homology of $E$ splits as a wedge of the $R$-homology of induced virtual representation spheres. The full subcategory of these spectra is closed under all of the basic equivariant operations, and this greatly simplifies computation. Many examples of spectra and homology theories are included along the way. We refine this to a collection of spectra analogous to the pure and isotropic spectra considered by Hill--Hopkins--Ravenel. For these spectra, the …
Let G be a finite group. For semi-free G-manifolds which are oriented in the sense of Waner, the homotopy classes of G-equivariant maps into a G-sphere are described in terms of their degrees, and the degrees occurring are characterized in terms of congruences. This is first shown to be a stable problem and then solved using methods of equivariant stable homotopy theory with respect to a semi-free G-universe.
We prove that the $v_1$-local $G$-equivariant stable homotopy category for $G$ a finite group has a unique $G$-equivariant model at $p=2$. This means that at the prime $2$ the homotopy theory of $G$-spectra up to fixed point equivalences on $K$-theory is uniquely determined by its triangulated homotopy category and basic Mackey structure. The result combines the rigidity result for $K$-local spectra of the second author with the equivariant rigidity result for $G$-spectra of the first author. Further, when the prime $p$ is at least $5$ and does not divide the order of $G$, we provide an algebr…
The filtration on the infinite symmetric product of spheres by the number of factors provides a sequence of spectra between the sphere spectrum and the integral Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum. This filtration has received a lot of attention and the subquotients are interesting stable homotopy types. While the symmetric product filtration has been a major focus of research since the 1980s, essentially nothing was known when one adds group actions into the picture. We investigate the equivariant stable homotopy types, for compact Lie groups, obtained from this filtration of infinite symmetric produ…
In the mid 1980s, Steve Mitchell and Bill Richter produced a filtration of the Stiefel manifolds $O(V; W)$ and $U(V; W)$ of orthogonal and unitary, respectively, maps $V \to V \oplus W$ stably split as a wedge sum of Thom spaces defined over Grassmanians. Additionally, they produced a similar filtration for loops on $SU(V)$, with a similar splitting. A few years later, Michael Crabb made explicit the equivariance of the Stiefel manifold splittings and conjectured that the splitting of the loop space was equivariant as well. However, it has long been unknown whether the loop space of the real S…
Let G be a compact Lie group. We build a tower of G-spectra over the suspension spectrum of the space of linear isometries from one G-representation to another. The stable cofibres of the maps running down the tower are certain interesting Thom spaces. We conjecture that this tower provides an equivariant extension of Miller's stable splitting of Stiefel manifolds. We provide a cohomological obstruction to the tower producing a splitting in most cases; however, this obstruction does not rule out a split tower in the case where the Miller splitting is possible. We claim that in this case we hav…
We define equivariant projective unitary stable bundles as the appropriate twists when defining K-theory as sections of bundles with fibers the space of Fredholm operators over a Hilbert space. We construct universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundles for the orbit types, and we use a specific model for these local universal spaces in order to glue them to obtain a universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle for discrete and proper actions. We determine the homotopy type of the universal equivariant projective unitary stable bundle, and we show that the isomorphism classe…
We show how the formal Wirthmuller isomorphism theorem proven in "Isomorphisms between left and right adjoints", by Fausk, Hu, and May, simplifies the proof of the Wirthmuller isomorphism in equivariant stable homotopy theory. Other examples from equivariant stable homotopy theory show that the hypotheses of the formal Wirthmuller and formal Grothendieck isomorphism theorems in the cited paper cannot be weakened.
Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\mathscr{F}$ be a family of subgroups of $G$. We introduce a class of $G$-equivariant spectra that we call $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent. This definition fits into the general theory of torsion, complete, and nilpotent objects in a symmetric monoidal stable $\infty$-category, with which we begin. We then develop some of the basic properties of $\mathscr{F}$-nilpotent $G$-spectra, which are explored further in the sequel to this paper. In the rest of the paper, we prove several general structure theorems for $\infty$-categories of module spectra over objects such as…
In this article we extend the classical definitions of equivariant cohomotopy theory to the setting of proper actions of Lie groups. We combine methods originally developed in the analysis of nonlinear differential equations, mainly in connection with Leray-Schauder theory, and on the other hand from developments of equivariant $K$-Theory by N.C. Phillips. We prove the correspondence with a previous construction of W. Lück by constructing an index. As an illustration of these methods, we introduce a Burnside ring defined in analytical terms. With this definition, we extend a weak version of th…
Collection of (equivariant) $\rm{PL}$-mappings admitting a relative abelian, cyclic, quaternionic, bicyclic, and quaternionic-cyclic structures are constructed.
