The monomial basis for polynomials in N variables is labeled by compositions. To each composition there is associated a hook-length product, which is a product of linear functions of a parameter. The zeroes of this product are related to "critical pairs" of compositions; a concept defined in this paper. This property can be described in an elementary geometric way; for example: consider the two compositions (2,7,8,2,0,0) and (5,1,2,5,3,3), then the respective ranks, permutations of the index set {1,2,...,6} sorting the compositions, are (3,2,1,4,5,6) and (1,6,5,2,3,4), and the two vectors of differences (between the compositions and the ranks, respectively) are (-3,6,6,-3,-3,-3) and (2,-4,-4,2,2,2), which are parallel, with ratio -3/2. For a given composition and zero of its hook-length product there is an algorithm for constructing another composition with the parallelism property and which is comparable to it in a certain partial order on compositions, derived from the dominance order. This paper presents the motivation from the theory of nonsymmetric Jack polynomials and the description of the algorithm, as well as the proof of its validity.
We introduce the hook length expansion technique and explain how to discover old and new hook length formulas for partitions and plane trees. The new hook length formulas for trees obtained by our method can be proved rather easily, whereas those for partitions are much more difficult and some of them still remain open conjectures. We also develop a Maple package HookExp for computing the hook length expansion. The paper can be seen as a collection of hook length formulas for partitons and plane trees. All examples are illustrated by HookExp and, for many easy cases, expained by well-known com…
In this short note we discuss recent results on hook length formulas of trees unifying some earlier results, and explain hook length formulas naturally associated to families of increasingly labelled trees.
We discover another one-parameter generalization of Postnikov's hook length formula for binary trees. The particularity of our formula is that the hook length $h_v$ appears as an exponent. As an application, we derive another simple hook length formula for binary trees when the underlying parameter takes the value 1/2.
The original motivation for study for hook length polynomials was to find a combinatorial proof for a hook length formula for binary trees given by Postnikov, as well as a proof for a hook length polynomial formula conjectured by Lascoux. In this paper, we define the hook length polynomial for plane forests of a given degree sequence type and show it can be factored into a product of linear forms. Some other enumerative results on forests are also given.
A few years ago, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes, both straight and shifted. The formula involves a sum over objects called \emph{excited diagrams}, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. Recently, the formula for skew straight shapes was proved via a simple bumping algorithm. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to skew shifted shapes. Since straight skew shapes are special cases of skew shifted shapes, this is …
In this paper, we define two kinds of hook length for internal vertices of complete $m$-ary trees, and deduce their corresponding hook length formulas, which generalize the main results obtained by Du and Liu.
Recently, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes. The formula involves a sum over objects called excited diagrams, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. In this paper, we present a simple bijection that proves an equivalent recursive version of Naruse's result, in the same way that the celebrated hook-walk proof due to Green, Nijenhuis and Wilf gives a bijective (or probabilistic) proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary sh…
Recently, a simple proof of the hook length formula was given via the branching rule. In this paper, we extend the results to shifted tableaux. We give a bijective proof of the branching rule for the hook lengths for shifted tableaux; present variants of this rule, including weighted versions; and make the first tentative steps toward a bijective proof of the hook length formula for d-complete posets.
A multiset hook length formula for integer partitions is established by using combinatorial manipulation. As special cases, we rederive three hook length formulas, two of them obtained by Nekrasov-Okounkov, the third one by Iqbal, Nazir, Raza and Saleem, who have made use of the cyclic symmetry of the topological vertex. A multiset hook-content formula is also proved.
Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.
There are $k$ kinds of length $k$ hooks with different arm length. Actually, this $k$ kinds appear uniformly in Young diagrams of size $n$. The property ``appear uniformly'' is called super symmetric. We give a combinatorial proof of the supper symmetric property of hook length.
In this paper, we present a direct bijective proof of the hook-length formula for standard immaculate tableaux, which arose in the study of non-commutative symmetric functions. Our proof is along the spirit of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii's combinatorial proof of the hook-length formula for standard Young tableaux.
Han recently discovered new hook length identities for binary trees. In this paper, we extend Han's identities to binomial families of trees. Moreover, we present a bijective proof of one of the identities for the family of ordered trees.
Based on the ideas in [CKP], we introduce the weighted analogue of the branching rule for the classical hook length formula, and give two proofs of this result. The first proof is completely bijective, and in a special case gives a new short combinatorial proof of the hook length formula. Our second proof is probabilistic, generalizing the (usual) hook walk proof of Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf, as well as the q-walk of Kerov. Further applications are also presented.
A {\em pointed partition} of $n$ is a pair $(λ, v)$ where $λ\vdash n$ and $v$ is a cell in its Ferrers diagram. We construct an involution on pointed partitions of $n$ exchanging "hook length" and "part length". This gives a bijective proof of a recent result of Bessenrodt and Han.
Some conjectures on partition hook lengths, recently stated by the author, have been proved and generalized by Stanley, who also needed a formula by Andrews, Goulden and Jackson on symmetric functions to complete his derivation. Another identity on symmetric functions can be used instead. The purpose of this note is to prove it.
Recently Han obtained a general formula for the weight function corresponding to the expansion of a generating function in terms of hook lengths of binary trees. In this paper, we present formulas for k-ary trees, plane trees, plane forests, labeled trees and forests. We also find appropriate generating functions which lead to unifications of the hook length formulas due to Du and Liu, Han, Gessel and Seo, and Postnikov.
Motivated by a formula of A. Postnikov relating binary trees, we define the hook length polynomials for m-ary trees and plane forests, and show that these polynomials have a simple binomial expression. An integer value of this expression is C_{k,m}(n)=\frac{1}{mn+1}{(mn+1)k \choose n}, which we call the (k,m)-Catalan number. For proving the hook length formulas, we also introduce a combinatorial family, (k,m)-ary trees, which are counted by the (k,m)-Catalan numbers.
In this paper, we take interest in finding applications for a hook-length formula recently proved in (Morales Pak Panova 2016). This formula can be applied to give a non trivial relation between alternating permutations and weighted Dyck paths. First, we give an alternative proof for this result using continued fractions, and then we apply a similar reasoning to the more general case of $k$-alternating permutations.
We prove a conjecture by Diaz-Lopez et al. that bounds the roots of descent polynomials. To do so, we prove an algebraic inequality, which we refer to as the "Slice and Push Inequality." This inequality compares expressions that come from Naruse's hook-length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape.
We prove a conjecture of Okada giving an exact formula for a certain statistic for hook-lengths of partitions: \frac{1}{n!} \sum_{λ\vdash n} f_λ^2 \sum_{u \in λ} \prod_{i=1}^{r}(h_u^2 - i^2) = \frac{1}{2(r+1)^2} \binom{2r}{r}\binom{2r+2}{r+1} \prod_{j=0}^{r} (n-j), where $f_λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ and $h_u$ is the hook length of the square $u$ of the Young diagram of $λ$. We also obtain other similar formulas.
This paper proves a generalization of a conjecture of Guoniu Han, inspired originally by an identity of Nekrasov and Okounkov. The main result states that certain sums over partitions p of n, involving symmetric functions of the squares of the hook lengths of p, are polynomial functions of n. A similar result is obtained for symmetric functions of the contents and shifted parts of n.
We consider $β$--Plancherel measures \cite{Ba.Ra.} on subsets of partitions -- and their asymptotics. These subsets are the Young diagrams contained in a $(k,\ell)$--hook, and we calculate the asymptotics of the expected shape of these diagrams, relative to such measures. We also calculate the asymptotics of the distribution function of the lengths of the rows and the columns for these diagrams. This might be considered as the restriction to the $(k,\ell)$--hook of the fundamental work of Baik, Deift and Johansson \cite{B.D.J.1}. The above asymptotics are given here by ratios of certain Selber…
Recently, Han obtained two hook length formulas for binary trees and asked for combinatorial proofs. One of Han's formulas has been generalized to k-ary trees by Yang. Sagan has found a probabilistic proof of Yang's extension. We give combinatorial proofs of Yang's formula for k-ary trees and the other formula of Han for binary trees. Our bijections are based on the structure of k-ary trees with staircase labelings.
Recently, Han discovered two formulas involving binary trees which have the interestig property that hooklengths appear as exponents. The purpose of this note is to give a probabilistic proof of one of Han's formulas. Yang has generalized Han's results to ordered trees. We show how the probabilistic approach can also be used in Yang's setting, as well as for a generalization of Han's formula in terms of certain infinite trees.
The dimension of an irreducible representation of $GL(n,\mathbb{C})$, $Sp(2n)$, or $SO(n)$ is given by the respective hook-length and content formulas for the corresponding partition. The first author, inspired by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula, conjectured combinatorial interpretations of analogous expressions involving hook-lengths and symplectic/orthogonal contents. We prove special cases of these conjectures. In the process, we show that partitions of $n$ with all symplectic contents non-zero are equinumerous with partitions of $n$ into distinct even parts. We also present Beck-type compani…
Motivated by a recent paper of Straub, we study the distribution of integer partitions according to the length of their largest hook, instead of the usual statistic, namely the size of the partitions. We refine Straub's analogue of Euler's Odd-Distinct partition theorem, derive a generalization in the spirit of Alder's conjecture, as well as a curious analogue of the first Rogers-Ramanujan identity. Moreover, we obtain a partition theorem that is the counterpart of Euler's pentagonal number theory in this setting, and connect it with the Rogers-Fine identity. We concludes with some congruence …
We present a new family of hook-length formulas for the number of standard increasing tableaux which arise in the study of factorial Grothendieck polynomials. In the case of straight shapes our formulas generalize the classical hook-length formula and Stanley's formula. For skew shapes, our formulas generalize the Naruse hook-length formula and its $q$-analogues, which were studied in previous papers of the series.
We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted …
In this work we introduce and study various generalizations of the notion of increasingly labelled trees, where the label of a child node is always larger than the label of its parent node, to multilabelled tree families, where the nodes in the tree can get multiple labels. For all tree classes we show characterizations of suitable generating functions for the tree enumeration sequence via differential equations. Furthermore, for several combinatorial classes of multilabelled increasing tree families we present explicit enumeration results. We also present multilabelled increasing tree familie…
We exactly determine the maximum possible hook length of $(s,t)$-core partitions with $d$-distinct parts when there are finitely many such partitions. Moreover, we provide an algorithm to construct a $d$-distinct $(s,t)$-core partition with this maximum possible hook length.
We discuss Sekiguchi-type differential operators, their eigenvalues, and a generalization of Andrews-Goulden-Jackson formula. These will be applied to extract explicit formulae involving shifted partitions and hook lengths.
We introduce a class of posets, which includes both ribbon posets (skew shapes) and $d$-complete posets, such that their number of linear extensions is given by a determinant of a matrix whose entries are products of hook lengths. We also give $q$-analogues of this determinantal formula in terms of the major index and inversion statistics. As applications, we give families of tree posets whose numbers of linear extensions are given by generalizations of Euler numbers, we draw relations to Naruse-Okada's positive formulas for the number of linear extensions of skew $d$-complete posets, and we g…
The generating function of reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. This result, which was first obtained by Stanley, can be explained bijectively using the Hillman-Grassl correspondence between reverse plane partitions and tableaux weighted by hook-lengths. In this extended abstract an alternative bijection between the same families of objects is presented. This construction is best perceived as a set of rules for building reverse plane partitions, viewed as arrangements of stacks of cubes, using bricks in the shape of rim-hook…
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.
The hook length formula for $d$-complete posets states that the $P$-partition generating function for them is given by a product in terms of hook lengths. We give a new proof of the hook length formula using $q$-integrals. The proof is done by a case-by-case analysis consisting of two steps. First, we express the $P$-partition generating function for each case as a $q$-integral and then we evaluate the $q$-integrals. Several $q$-integrals are evaluated using partial fraction expansion identities and others are verified by computer.
In this paper, we present, for any integer d, a description of the set of hooks in a d-symbol. We then introduce generalized hook length functions for a d-symbol, and prove a general result about them, involving the core and quotient of the symbol. We list some applications, for example to the well-known hook lengths in integer partitions. This leads in particular to a generalization of a relative hook formula for the degree of characters of the symmetric group discovered by G. Malle and G. Navarro in [3].
Recently, the first author generalized a formula of Nekrasov and Okounkov which gives a combinatorial formula, in terms of hook lengths of partitions, for the coefficients of certain power series. In the course of this investigation, he conjectured that $A000731(n)=0$ if and only if $A033687(n)=0$. The numbers $A000731(n)$ are given in terms of hook lengths of partitions, while $A033687(n)$ equals the number of 3-core partitions of $n$. Here we prove this conjecture.
Motivated by the question of finding a type B analogue of the bijection between oscillating tableaux and matchings, we find a correspondence between oscillating m-rim hook tableaux and m-colored matchings, where m is a positive integer. An oscillating m-rim hook tableau is defined as a sequence $(λ^0,λ^1,...,λ^{2n})$ of Young diagrams starting with the empty shape and ending with the empty shape such that $λ^{i}$ is obtained from $λ^{i-1}$ by adding an m-rim hook or by deleting an m-rim hook. Our bijection relies on the generalized Schensted algorithm due to White. An oscillating 2-rim hook ta…
The concept of $t$-difference operator for functions of partitions is introduced to prove a generalization of Stanley's theorem on polynomiality of Plancherel averages of symmetric functions related to contents and hook lengths. Our extension uses a generalization of the notion of Plancherel measure, based on walks in the Young lattice with steps given by the addition of $t$-hooks. It is well-known that the hook lengths of multiples of $t$ can be characterized by the Littlewood decomposition. Our study gives some further information on the contents and hook lengths of other congruence classes …
Motivated by the many roles that hook lengths play in mathematics, we study the distribution of the number of $t$-hooks in the partitions of $n$. We prove that the limiting distribution is normal with mean $μ_t(n)\sim \frac{\sqrt{6n}}π-\frac{t}{2}$ and variance $σ_t^2(n)\sim \frac{(π^2-6)\sqrt{6n}}{2π^3}.$ Furthermore, we prove that the distribution of the number of hook lengths that are multiples of a fixed $t\geq 4$ in partitions of $n$ converge to a shifted Gamma distribution with parameter $k=(t-1)/2$ and scale $θ=\sqrt{2/(t-1)}.$
The paper is devoted to the derivation of the expansion formula for the powers of the Euler Product in terms of partition hook lengths, discovered by Nekrasov and Okounkov in their study of the Seiberg-Witten Theory. We provide a refinement based on a new property of t-cores, and give an elementary proof by using the Macdonald identities. We also obtain an extension by adding two more parameters, which appears to be a discrete interpolation between the Macdonald identities and the generating function for t-cores. Several applications are derived, including the "marked hook formula".
The Nekrasov--Okounkov hook length formula provides a fundamental link between the theory of partitions and the coefficients of powers of the Dedekind eta function. In this paper we examine three conjectures presented by Amdeberhan. The first conjecture is a refined Nekrasov--Okounkov formula involving hooks with trivial legs. We prove the conjecture. The second conjecture is on properties of the roots of the underlying D'Arcais polynomials. We give a counterexample and present a new conjecture. The third conjecture is on the unimodality of the coefficients of the involved polynomials. We conf…
Let $p(n)$ be the number of all integer partitions of the positive integer $n$ and let $λ$ be a partition, selected uniformly at random from among all such $p(n)$ partitions. It is known that each partition $λ$ has a unique graphical representation, composed by $n$ non-overlapping cells in the plane called Young diagram. As a second step of our sampling experiment, we select a cell $c$ uniformly at random from among all $n$ cells of the Young diagram of the partition $λ$. For large $n$, we study the asymptotic behavior of the hook length $Z_n=Z_n(λ,c)$ of the cell $c$ of a random partituion $λ…
