We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted standard tableaux is analog to the construction of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii, however, unlike to their algorithm, we are forced to use the 'rowwise' total order of the cells in the shifted Ferrers diagram rather than the 'columnwise' total order as the underlying order in the algorithm. Unfortunately the construction of the shifted hook tabloid is more complicated in the shifted case. As a side-result we obtain a simple random algorithm for generating shifted standard tableaux of a given shape, which produces every such tableau equally likely.
Baryshnikov and Romik derived the combinatorial identities for the numbers of the $m$-strip tableaux. This generalized the classical André's theorem for the number of up-down permutations. They asked for a bijective proof for the enumeration of $3$-strip tableaux. In this paper we will provide such a bijective proof. First we count the $3$-strip tableaux by decomposition. Secondly we will apply this "decomposition" idea on the up-down permutations and down-up permutations to enumerate the $3$-strip tableaux bijectively.
Recently, a simple proof of the hook length formula was given via the branching rule. In this paper, we extend the results to shifted tableaux. We give a bijective proof of the branching rule for the hook lengths for shifted tableaux; present variants of this rule, including weighted versions; and make the first tentative steps toward a bijective proof of the hook length formula for d-complete posets.
In this paper, we present a direct bijective proof of the hook-length formula for standard immaculate tableaux, which arose in the study of non-commutative symmetric functions. Our proof is along the spirit of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii's combinatorial proof of the hook-length formula for standard Young tableaux.
Closed formulas are known for $S(k,0;n)$, the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and with at most $k$ parts, where $1\le k\le 5$. Here we study the analogue problem for $S(k,\ell;n)$, the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ which are contained in the $(k,\ell)$ hook. We deduce some formulas for the cases $k+\ell\le 4$.
We present a new family of hook-length formulas for the number of standard increasing tableaux which arise in the study of factorial Grothendieck polynomials. In the case of straight shapes our formulas generalize the classical hook-length formula and Stanley's formula. For skew shapes, our formulas generalize the Naruse hook-length formula and its $q$-analogues, which were studied in previous papers of the series.
Recently, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes. The formula involves a sum over objects called excited diagrams, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. In this paper, we present a simple bijection that proves an equivalent recursive version of Naruse's result, in the same way that the celebrated hook-walk proof due to Green, Nijenhuis and Wilf gives a bijective (or probabilistic) proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary sh…
Egecioglu and Remmel gave an interpretation for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix K^{-1} in terms of special rim-hook tableaux. They were able to use this interpretation to give a combinatorial proof that KK^{-1}=I but were unable to do the same for the equation K^{-1}K=I. We define a sign-reversing involution on rooted special rim-hook tableaux which can be used to prove that the last column of this second product is correct. In addition, following a suggestion of Chow we combine our involution with a result of Gasharov to give a combinatorial proof of a special case of the (3+1)-free …
A few years ago, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes, both straight and shifted. The formula involves a sum over objects called \emph{excited diagrams}, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. Recently, the formula for skew straight shapes was proved via a simple bumping algorithm. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to skew shifted shapes. Since straight skew shapes are special cases of skew shifted shapes, this is …
The asymptotics of the "$(k,\ell)$ hook" sums $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ (see~\eqref{the.sums.1}) were calculated in~\cite{berele}. It was recently realized that in~\cite[Section 7]{berele} there are few misprints and certain confusion with regard to the notations, so that the precise asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ is not clear. Here we add more details and carefully repeat these calculations, which lead to explicit values for the asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n).$
Motivated by the question of finding a type B analogue of the bijection between oscillating tableaux and matchings, we find a correspondence between oscillating m-rim hook tableaux and m-colored matchings, where m is a positive integer. An oscillating m-rim hook tableau is defined as a sequence $(λ^0,λ^1,...,λ^{2n})$ of Young diagrams starting with the empty shape and ending with the empty shape such that $λ^{i}$ is obtained from $λ^{i-1}$ by adding an m-rim hook or by deleting an m-rim hook. Our bijection relies on the generalized Schensted algorithm due to White. An oscillating 2-rim hook ta…
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.
Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux …
Chalykh, Veselov and Feigin introduced the notions of quasiinvariants for Coxeter groups, which is a generalization of invariants. In [2], Bandlow and Musiker showed that for the symmetric group $S_n$ of order $n$, the space of quasiinvariants has a decomposition indexed by standard tableaux. They gave a description of basis for the components indexed by standard tableaux of shape $(n-1,1)$. In this paper, we generalize their results to a description of basis for the components indexed by standard tableaux of arbitrary hook shape.

Using a 0/1 encoding of Young diagrams and its consequences for rim hook tableaux, we prove a reduction formula of Littlewood for arbitrary characters of the symmetric group, evaluated at elements with all cycle lengths divisible by a given integer. As an application, we find explicitly the coefficients in a formula of Kostant for certain powers of the Dedekind $η$-function, avoiding most of the original machinery.
By considering the specialisation $s_λ(1,q,q^2,...,q^{n-1})$ of the Schur function, Stanley was able to describe a formula for the number of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ in terms of two properties of the boxes in the diagram for $λ$. Using specialisations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we derive corresponding formulae, first given by El Samra and King, for the number of semistandard symplectic and orthogonal $λ$-tableaux.
This is an etude in experimental semi-rigorous (rigorizable!) mathematics. The leading asymptotics was brilliantly derived by Allan Berele and Amitai Regev for general hooks H(k,l) and general powers z, but what about more refined asymptotics? For small k and l, one can "guess" a linear recurrence (since we live in the holonomic ansatz) and using the Birkhoff-Trjitzinsky method, beautifully implemented in Doron Zeilberger's Maple package AsyRec (that has been incorporated into the present Maple package), we computed amazing refined asymptotics, that confirm, with a vengeance, the Berele-Regev …
We define a number of new combinatorial operations on skew semistandard domino tableaux, which together with constructions introduced earlier by C. Carre and B. Leclerc, define an elegant structure on the set of these tableaux, that closely parallels the structure defined in [math.CO/9908099] for ordinary skew semistandard tableaux, that is related to the Littlewood-Richardson rule. These operations are: (1) a bijection between semistandard domino tableaux and certain pairs of ordinary tableaux of the same weight that together fill the same shape; (2) a weight preserving transformation of domi…
We present a conjectual hook formula concerning the number of the standard tableaux on "cylindric" skew diagrams. Our formula can be seen as an extension of Naruse's hook formula for skew diagrams. Moreover, we prove our conjecture in some special cases.
Irreducible characters in the symmetric group are of special interest in combinatorics. They can be expressed either combinatorially with ribbon tableaux, or algebraically with contents. In this paper, these two expressions are related in a combinatorial way. We first introduce a fine structure in the famous jeu de taquin called "trace forest", with which we are able to count certain types of ribbon tableaux, leading to a simple bijective proof of a character evaluation formula in terms of contents that dates back to Frobenius (1901). Inspired by this proof, we give an inductive scheme that gi…
We give a bijective proof of an identity relating primed shifted gl(n)-standard tableaux to the product of a gl(n) character in the form of a Schur function and a product of sums of x and y terms. This result generalises a number of well--known results due to Robbins and Rumsey, Chapman, Tokuyama, Okada and Macdonald. An analogous result is then obtained in the case of primed shifted sp(2n)-standard tableaux which are bijectively related to the product of a t-deformed sp(2n) character and another x and y product. All results are also interpreted in terms of alternating sign matrix identities, …
Short, bijective proofs of identities for multisets of `hook pairs' (arm-leg pairs) of the cells of certain diagrams are given. These hook pair identities were originally found by Regev.
Based on Schützenberger's evacuation and a modification of jeu de taquin, we give a bijective proof of an identity connecting the generating function of reverse semistandard Young tableaux with bounded entries with the generating function of all semistandard Young tableaux. This solves Exercise 7.102 b of Richard Stanley's book `Enumerative Combinatorics 2'.
A notion of cyclic descents on standard Young tableaux (SYT) of rectangular shape was introduced by Rhoades, and extended to certain skew shapes by the last two authors. The cyclic descent set restricts to the usual descent set when the largest value is ignored, and has the property that the number of SYT of a given shape with a given cyclic descent set $D$ is invariant under cyclic shifts of the entries of $D$. Following these results, the existence of cyclic descent sets for standard Young tableaux of any skew shape other than a ribbon was conjectured by the authors, and recently proved by A…
Recently Blasiak gave a combinatorial rule for the Kronecker coefficient $g_{λμν}$ when $μ$ is a hook shape by defining a set of colored Yamanouchi tableaux with cardinality $g_{λμν}$ in terms of a process called conversion. We give a characterization of colored Yamanouchi tableaux that does not rely on conversion, which leads to a simpler formulation and proof of the Kronecker rule for one hook shape.
Han recently discovered new hook length identities for binary trees. In this paper, we extend Han's identities to binomial families of trees. Moreover, we present a bijective proof of one of the identities for the family of ordered trees.
We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates on the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape in a variety of special cases. Our approach is based on Naruse's hook-length formula. We also compare our bounds with the existing bounds on the numbers of linear extensions of the corresponding posets.
Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.
We present a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape, and the set of marked shifted standard Young tableaux of a certain shifted shape. Numerically, this result is due to DeWitt (2012). Combined with other known bijections this gives a bijective proof of the product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape. This resolves an open problem by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019), and allows for efficient random sampling. Other applications include a bijection for semistandard Young tableaux, and a bijective proo…
We prove a conjecture by Diaz-Lopez et al. that bounds the roots of descent polynomials. To do so, we prove an algebraic inequality, which we refer to as the "Slice and Push Inequality." This inequality compares expressions that come from Naruse's hook-length formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape.
The connection between the generating functions of various sets of tableaux and the appropriate families of quasisymmetric functions is a significant tool to give a direct analytical proof of some advanced bijective results and provide new combinatorial formulas. In this paper we focus on two kinds of type B Littlewood-Richardson coefficients and derive new formulas using weak composition quasisymmetric functions and Chow's quasisymmetric functions. In the type A case these coefficients give the multiplication table for Schur functions, i.e. the generating functions for classical Young tableau…
We provide simple necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a standard Young tableau of a given shape and major index $r$ mod $n$, for all $r$. Our result generalizes the $r=1$ case due essentially to (1974) and proves a recent conjecture due to Sundaram (2016) for the $r=0$ case. A byproduct of the proof is an asymptotic equidistribution result for "almost all" shapes. The proof uses a representation-theoretic formula involving Ramanujan sums and normalized symmetric group character estimates. Further estimates involving "opposite" hook lengths are given which are well-adapted …
Alternating sign matrices with a U-turn boundary (UASMs) are a recent generalization of ordinary alternating sign matrices. Here we show that variations of these matrices are in bijective correspondence with certain symplectic shifted tableaux that were recently introduced in the context of a symplectic version of Tokuyama's deformation of Weyl's denominator formula. This bijection yields a formula for the weighted enumeration of UASMs. In this connection use is made of the link between UASMs and certain square ice configuration matrices.
Based on the ideas in [CKP], we introduce the weighted analogue of the branching rule for the classical hook length formula, and give two proofs of this result. The first proof is completely bijective, and in a special case gives a new short combinatorial proof of the hook length formula. Our second proof is probabilistic, generalizing the (usual) hook walk proof of Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf, as well as the q-walk of Kerov. Further applications are also presented.
A {\em pointed partition} of $n$ is a pair $(λ, v)$ where $λ\vdash n$ and $v$ is a cell in its Ferrers diagram. We construct an involution on pointed partitions of $n$ exchanging "hook length" and "part length". This gives a bijective proof of a recent result of Bessenrodt and Han.
The generating function of reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. This result, which was first obtained by Stanley, can be explained bijectively using the Hillman-Grassl correspondence between reverse plane partitions and tableaux weighted by hook-lengths. In this extended abstract an alternative bijection between the same families of objects is presented. This construction is best perceived as a set of rules for building reverse plane partitions, viewed as arrangements of stacks of cubes, using bricks in the shape of rim-hook…
We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.
We define two refinements of the skew length statistic on simultaneous core partitions. The first one relies on hook lengths and is used to prove a refined version of the theorem stating that the skew length is invariant under conjugation of the core. The second one is equivalent to a generalisation of Shi tableaux to the rational level of Catalan combinatorics. These rational Shi tableaux encode dominant $p$-stable elements in the affine symmetric group. We prove that the rational Shi tableau is injective, that is, each dominant $p$-stable affine permutation is determined uniquely by its Shi …
We define a class L_{n, k} of permutations that generalizes alternating (up-down) permutations and give bijective proofs of certain pattern-avoidance results for this class. As a special case of our results, we give two bijections between the set A_{2n}(1234) of alternating permutations of length 2n with no four-term increasing subsequence and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^n), and between the set A_{2n + 1}(1234) and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^{n - 1}, 2, 1). This represents the first enumeration of alternating permutations avoiding a pattern of length four. We also extend previ…
We present a randomized algorithm for generating standard set-valued tableaux by extending the Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf hook walk algorithm. In the case of asymptotically rank two partitions, we use this algorithm to give a fully polynomial almost uniform sampler (FPAUS) for standard set-valued tableaux. This FPAUS is then used to construct a fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) for counting the number of standard set-valued tableaux for such shapes. We also construct a FPAUS and FPRAS for standard set-valued tableaux when either the size of the partition or the difference betw…
We prove a conjecture of Okada giving an exact formula for a certain statistic for hook-lengths of partitions: \frac{1}{n!} \sum_{λ\vdash n} f_λ^2 \sum_{u \in λ} \prod_{i=1}^{r}(h_u^2 - i^2) = \frac{1}{2(r+1)^2} \binom{2r}{r}\binom{2r+2}{r+1} \prod_{j=0}^{r} (n-j), where $f_λ$ is the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ and $h_u$ is the hook length of the square $u$ of the Young diagram of $λ$. We also obtain other similar formulas.
We give a bijective proof that the Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a cycle graph (viewed as a one-dimensional simplicial complex) are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape.
This paper makes a combinatorial study of the two monoids and the two types of tableaux that arise from the two possible generalizations of the Patience Sorting algorithm from permutations (or standard words) to words. For both types of tableaux, we present Robinson--Schensted--Knuth-type correspondences (that is, bijective correspondences between word arrays and certain pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape), generalizing two known correspondences: a bijective correspondence between standard words and certain pairs of standard tableaux, and an injective correspondence between words…
Let $\mathcal{T}_3$ be the three-rowed strip. Recently Regev conjectured that the number of standard Young tableaux with $n-3$ entries in the "skew three-rowed strip" $\mathcal{T}_3 / (2,1,0)$ is $m_{n-1}-m_{n-3}$, a difference of two Motzkin numbers. This conjecture, together with hundreds of similar identities, were derived automatically and proved rigorously by Zeilberger via his powerful program and WZ method. It appears that each one is a linear combination of Motzkin numbers with constant coefficients. In this paper we will introduce a simple bijection between Motzkin paths and standard …
Based on the direct-sum-decomposition of the rth tensor power of the defining representation of the special orthogonal group SO(2k+1) one is interested in a bijective approach for determining the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components. In particular this leads us to a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, which we present for SO(3). Moreover we introduce the descent set of a vacillating tableau. As our bijection preserves this descent set, we also obtain the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius …
The hook length formula gives a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a partition shape. The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape does not always have a product formula. However, for some special skew shapes, there is a product formula. Recently, Morales, Pak and Panova joint with Krattenthaler conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for $λ=((2a+c)^{c+a},(a+c)^a)$ and $μ=(a+1,a^{a-1},1)$. They also conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shifted shape. In this pa…
