Another bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula for the generating function for semistandard tableaux of a given shape is given that does not involve the involution principle of Garsia and Milne. It is the result of a merge of the modified jeu de taquin idea from the author's previous bijective proof (``An involution principle-free bijective proof of Stanley's hook-content formula", Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science, to appear) and the Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii bijection (Discrete Math. Theoret. Computer Science 1 (1997), 53-67) for the hook formula for standard Young tableaux of a given shape. This new algorithm can also be used as an algorithm for the random generation of tableaux of a given shape with bounded entries. An appropriate deformation of this algorithm gives an algorithm for the random generation of plane partitions inside a given box.
We use the hook lengths of a partition to define two rectangular tableaux. We prove these tableaux have equal multisets of entries, first by elementary combinatorial arguments, and then using Stanley's Hook Content Formula and symmetric polynomials.
In this paper, we present a direct bijective proof of the hook-length formula for standard immaculate tableaux, which arose in the study of non-commutative symmetric functions. Our proof is along the spirit of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii's combinatorial proof of the hook-length formula for standard Young tableaux.
Recently, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes. The formula involves a sum over objects called excited diagrams, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. In this paper, we present a simple bijection that proves an equivalent recursive version of Naruse's result, in the same way that the celebrated hook-walk proof due to Green, Nijenhuis and Wilf gives a bijective (or probabilistic) proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary sh…
A few years ago, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes, both straight and shifted. The formula involves a sum over objects called \emph{excited diagrams}, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. Recently, the formula for skew straight shapes was proved via a simple bumping algorithm. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to skew shifted shapes. Since straight skew shapes are special cases of skew shifted shapes, this is …
In a delightful article, Richard Stanley derived, algebraically, the surprisingly simple formula, 3 times 7 to the power n-1, for the sum of the cubes of the n-th row of Stern's diatomic array. In this note, we find an elegant bijective proof of this surprising fact, that explains it and gives insight. The novelty is that this gorgeous bijection was discovered by a computer (SBE), with minimal guidance by a human (DZ). This debunks the conventional wisdom, held by some human supremacists, that computers can only compute, but they can't give insight
We present a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for shifted standard tableaux of a fixed shape based on a modified jeu de taquin and the ideas of the bijective proof of the hook-length formula for ordinary standard tableaux by Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii. In their proof Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii define a bijection between arbitrary fillings of the Ferrers diagram with the integers $1,2,...,n$ and pairs of standard tableaux and hook tabloids. In our shifted version of their algorithm the map from the set of arbitrary fillings of the shifted Ferrers diagram onto the set of shifted …
The original Pak-Stanley labeling was defined by Pak and Stanley as a bijective map from the set of regions of an extended Shi arrangement to the set of parking functions. This map was later generalized to other arrangements associated with graphs and directed multigraphs. In these more general cases the map is no longer bijective. However, it was shown Hopkins and Perkinson and then the first author that it is surjective to the set of the $G$-parking functions, where $G$ is the multigraph associated with the arrangement. This leads to a natural question: when is the generalized Pak-Stanley ma…
Recently, a simple proof of the hook length formula was given via the branching rule. In this paper, we extend the results to shifted tableaux. We give a bijective proof of the branching rule for the hook lengths for shifted tableaux; present variants of this rule, including weighted versions; and make the first tentative steps toward a bijective proof of the hook length formula for d-complete posets.
In this paper we answer a question posed by R. Stanley in his collection of Bijection Proof Problems (Problem 240). We present a bijective proof for the enumeration of walks of length $k$ a chess rook can move along on an $m\times n$ board starting and ending on the same square.
Short, bijective proofs of identities for multisets of `hook pairs' (arm-leg pairs) of the cells of certain diagrams are given. These hook pair identities were originally found by Regev.
Recently, a new weighted generalization of the branching rule for the hook lengths, equivalent to the hook formula, was proved. In this paper, we generalize the complementary branching rule, which can be used to prove Burnside's formula. We present three different proofs: bijective, via weighted hook walks, and via the ordinary weighted branching rule.
Motivated by the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths, the first author conjectured that the Plancherel average of the $2k$-th power sum of hook lengths of partitions with size $n$ is always a polynomial of $n$ for any $k\in \mathbb{N}$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley (Ramanujan J., 23(1--3): 91--105, 2010). In this paper, inspired by the work of Stanley and Olshanski on the differential poset of Young lattice, we study the properties of two kinds of difference operators $D$ and $D^-$ defined on functions of partitions. Even though the calculations for higher orders…
We give a bijective proof of Macdonald's reduced word identity using pipe dreams and Little's bumping algorithm. This proof extends to a principal specialization due to Fomin and Stanley. Such a proof has been sought for over 20 years. Our bijective tools also allow us to solve a problem posed by Fomin and Kirillov from 1997 using work of Wachs, Lenart, Serrano and Stump. These results extend earlier work by the third author on a Markov process for reduced words of the longest permutation.
The generating function of reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. This result, which was first obtained by Stanley, can be explained bijectively using the Hillman-Grassl correspondence between reverse plane partitions and tableaux weighted by hook-lengths. In this extended abstract an alternative bijection between the same families of objects is presented. This construction is best perceived as a set of rules for building reverse plane partitions, viewed as arrangements of stacks of cubes, using bricks in the shape of rim-hook…
Based on the ideas in [CKP], we introduce the weighted analogue of the branching rule for the classical hook length formula, and give two proofs of this result. The first proof is completely bijective, and in a special case gives a new short combinatorial proof of the hook length formula. Our second proof is probabilistic, generalizing the (usual) hook walk proof of Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf, as well as the q-walk of Kerov. Further applications are also presented.
A {\em pointed partition} of $n$ is a pair $(λ, v)$ where $λ\vdash n$ and $v$ is a cell in its Ferrers diagram. We construct an involution on pointed partitions of $n$ exchanging "hook length" and "part length". This gives a bijective proof of a recent result of Bessenrodt and Han.
We give a bijective proof of a conjecture of Regev and Vershik on the equality of two multisets of hook numbers of certain skew-Young diagrams. The bijection proves a result that is stronger and more symmetric than the original conjecture, by means of a construction involving Dyck paths, a particular type of lattice path.
We present a new family of hook-length formulas for the number of standard increasing tableaux which arise in the study of factorial Grothendieck polynomials. In the case of straight shapes our formulas generalize the classical hook-length formula and Stanley's formula. For skew shapes, our formulas generalize the Naruse hook-length formula and its $q$-analogues, which were studied in previous papers of the series.
A new algorithm for inserting rim-hooks into reverse plane partitions is presented. The insertion is used to define a bijection between reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape and multi-sets of rim-hooks. In turn this yields a bijective proof of the fact that the generating function for reverse plane partitions of a fixed shape, which was first obtained by R. Stanley, factors into a product featuring the hook-lengths of this shape. Our bijection turns out to be equivalent to a map defined by I. Pak by different means, and can be related to the Hillman-Grassl correspondence and the Robinson-S…
In 2009, the first author proved the Nekrasov-Okounkov formula on hook lengths for integer partitions by using an identity of Macdonald in the framework of type $\widetilde A$ affine root systems, and conjectured that some summations over the set of all partitions of size $n$ are always polynomials in $n$. This conjecture was generalized and proved by Stanley. Recently, Pétréolle derived two Nekrasov-Okounkov type formulas for $\widetilde C$ and $\widetilde C\,\check{}$ which involve doubled distinct and self-conjugate partitions. Inspired by all those previous works, we establish the polynomi…
The chromatic polynomial and its generalization, the chromatic symmetric function, are two important graph invariants. Celebrated theorems of Birkhoff, Whitney, and Stanley show how both objects can be expressed in three different ways: as sums over all spanning subgraphs, as sums over spanning subgraphs with no broken circuits, and in terms of acyclic orientations with compatible colorings. We establish all six of these expressions bijectively. In fact, we do this with only two bijections, as the proofs in the symmetric function setting are obtained using the same bijections as in the polynom…
The concept of $t$-difference operator for functions of partitions is introduced to prove a generalization of Stanley's theorem on polynomiality of Plancherel averages of symmetric functions related to contents and hook lengths. Our extension uses a generalization of the notion of Plancherel measure, based on walks in the Young lattice with steps given by the addition of $t$-hooks. It is well-known that the hook lengths of multiples of $t$ can be characterized by the Littlewood decomposition. Our study gives some further information on the contents and hook lengths of other congruence classes …
Egecioglu and Remmel gave an interpretation for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix K^{-1} in terms of special rim-hook tableaux. They were able to use this interpretation to give a combinatorial proof that KK^{-1}=I but were unable to do the same for the equation K^{-1}K=I. We define a sign-reversing involution on rooted special rim-hook tableaux which can be used to prove that the last column of this second product is correct. In addition, following a suggestion of Chow we combine our involution with a result of Gasharov to give a combinatorial proof of a special case of the (3+1)-free …
Kohnert proposed the first monomial positive formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for certain unit cell diagrams obtained from the Rothe diagram of a permutation. Billey, Jockusch and Stanley gave the first proven formula for Schubert polynomials as the generating polynomial for compatible sequences of reduced words of a permutation. In this paper, we give an explicit bijection between these two models, thereby definitively proving Kohnert's rule for Schubert polynomials.
In this note, by counting some colored plane trees we obtain several binomial identities. These identities can be viewed as specific evaluations of certain generalizations of the Narayana polynomials. As consequences, it provides combinatorial proofs for a bijective problem in Stanley's collection "Bijective Proof Problems", a new formula for the Narayana polynomials as well as a new expression for the Harer-Zagier formula enumerating unicellular maps, in a unified way. Furthermore, we identify a class of plane trees, whose enumeration is closely connected to the Schröder numbers. Many other b…
By considering the specialisation $s_λ(1,q,q^2,...,q^{n-1})$ of the Schur function, Stanley was able to describe a formula for the number of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ in terms of two properties of the boxes in the diagram for $λ$. Using specialisations of symplectic and orthogonal Schur functions, we derive corresponding formulae, first given by El Samra and King, for the number of semistandard symplectic and orthogonal $λ$-tableaux.
Using a modified version of jeu de taquin, Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii gave a bijective proof of the hook-length formula for counting standard Young tableaux of fixed shape. In this paper we consider a natural extension of jeu de taquin to arbitrary posets. Given a poset P, jeu de taquin defines a map from the set of bijective labelings of the poset elements with $\{1,2,...,|P|\}$ to the set of linear extensions of the poset. One question of particular interest is for which posets this map yields each linear extension equally often. We analyze the double-tailed diamond poset $D_{m,n}$ and sh…
Define a permutation to be any sequence of distinct positive integers. Given two permutations p and s on disjoint underlying sets, we denote by p sh s the set of shuffles of p and s (the set of all permutations obtained by interleaving the two permutations). A permutation statistic is a function St whose domain is the set of permutations such that St(p) only depends on the relative order of the elements of p. A permutation statistic is shuffle compatible if the distribution of St on p sh s depends only on St(p) and St(s) and their lengths rather than on the individual permutations themselves. …
Based on Schützenberger's evacuation and a modification of jeu de taquin, we give a bijective proof of an identity connecting the generating function of reverse semistandard Young tableaux with bounded entries with the generating function of all semistandard Young tableaux. This solves Exercise 7.102 b of Richard Stanley's book `Enumerative Combinatorics 2'.
The number of standard Young tableaux of a fixed shape is famously given by the hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. A bijective proof of Novelli, Pak and Stoyanovskii relies on a sorting algorithm akin to jeu-de-taquin which transforms an arbitrary filling of a partition into a standard Young tableau by exchanging adjacent entries. Recently, Krattenthaler and Müller defined the complexity of this algorithm as the average number of performed exchanges, and Neumann and the author proved it fulfils some nice symmetry properties. In this paper we recall and extend the previous r…
In this paper we present a combinatorial proof of Selberg's integral formula. We start by giving a bijective proof of a Theorem about the number of topological orders of a certain related directed graph. Selberg's Integral Formula then follows by induction. This solves a problem posed by R. Stanley in 2008. Our proof is based on Andersons analytic proof of the formula. As part of the proof we show a further generalisation of the generalised Vandermonde determinant.
In 1986, Shi derived the famous formula $(n+1)^{n-1}$ for the number of regions of the Shi arrangement, a hyperplane arrangement in $\mathbb{R}^n$. There are at least two different bijective explanations of this formula, one by Pak and Stanley, another by Athanasiadis and Linusson. In 1996, Athanasiadis used the finite field method to derive a formula for the number of $k$-dimensional faces of the Shi arrangement for any $k$. Until now, the formula of Athanasiadis did not have a bijective explanation. In this paper, we extend a bijection for regions defined by Bernardi to obtain a bijection be…
This paper is devoted to the distribution of the eigenvalues of $XUYU^t$ where $X$ and $Y$ are given symmetric matrices and $U$ is a random real valued square matrix of standard normal distribution. More specifically we look at its moments, i.e. the mathematical expectation of the trace of $(XUYU^t)^n$ for arbitrary integer $n$. Hanlon, Stanley, Stembridge (1992) showed that this quantity can be expressed in terms of some generating series for the connection coefficients of the double cosets of the hyperoctahedral group with the eigenvalues of $X$ and $Y$ as indeterminate. We provide an explic…
We give a bijective proof that the Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a cycle graph (viewed as a one-dimensional simplicial complex) are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape.
We consider unicellular maps, or polygon gluings, of fixed genus. A few years ago the first author gave a recursive bijection transforming unicellular maps into trees, explaining the presence of Catalan numbers in counting formulas for these objects. In this paper, we give another bijection that explicitly describes the "recursive part" of the first bijection. As a result we obtain a very simple description of unicellular maps as pairs made by a plane tree and a permutation-like structure. All the previously known formulas follow as an immediate corollary or easy exercise, thus giving a biject…
The Novelli-Pak-Stoyanovskii algorithm is a sorting algorithm for Young tableaux of a fixed shape that was originally devised to give a bijective proof of the hook-length formula. We obtain new asymptotic results on the average case and worst case complexity of this algorithm as the underlying shape tends to a fixed limit curve. Furthermore, using the summation package Sigma we prove an exact formula for the average case complexity when the underlying shape consists of only two rows. We thereby answer questions posed by Krattenthaler and Müller.
This paper makes a combinatorial study of the two monoids and the two types of tableaux that arise from the two possible generalizations of the Patience Sorting algorithm from permutations (or standard words) to words. For both types of tableaux, we present Robinson--Schensted--Knuth-type correspondences (that is, bijective correspondences between word arrays and certain pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape), generalizing two known correspondences: a bijective correspondence between standard words and certain pairs of standard tableaux, and an injective correspondence between words…
We show that J_n, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the n-cycle, has a free resolution supported on the (n-3)-dimensional simplicial associahedron A_n. This resolution is not minimal for n > 5; in this case the Betti numbers of J_n are strictly smaller than the f-vector of A_n. We show that in fact the Betti numbers of J_n are in bijection with the number of standard Young tableaux of shape (d+1, 2, 1^{n-d-3}). This complements the fact that the number of (d-1)-dimensional faces of A_n are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of (super)shape (d+1, d+1, 1^{n-d-3}); a bijective proof of thi…
A notion of cyclic descents on standard Young tableaux (SYT) of rectangular shape was introduced by Rhoades, and extended to certain skew shapes by Adin, Elizalde and Roichman. The cyclic descent set restricts to the usual descent set when the largest value is ignored, and has the property that the number of SYT of a given shape with a given cyclic descent set D is invariant under cyclic shifts of the entries of D. Adin, Reiner and Roichman proved that a skew shape has a cyclic descent map if and only if it is not a connected ribbon. Unfortunately, their proof is nonconstructive. Recently Huan…
