We show that J_n, the Stanley-Reisner ideal of the n-cycle, has a free resolution supported on the (n-3)-dimensional simplicial associahedron A_n. This resolution is not minimal for n > 5; in this case the Betti numbers of J_n are strictly smaller than the f-vector of A_n. We show that in fact the Betti numbers of J_n are in bijection with the number of standard Young tableaux of shape (d+1, 2, 1^{n-d-3}). This complements the fact that the number of (d-1)-dimensional faces of A_n are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of (super)shape (d+1, d+1, 1^{n-d-3}); a bijective proof of this result was first provided by Stanley. An application of discrete Morse theory yields a cellular resolution of J_n that we show is minimal at the first syzygy. We furthermore exhibit a simple involution on the set of associahedron tableaux with fixed points given by the Betti tableaux, suggesting a Morse matching and in particular a poset structure on these objects.
We give a bijective proof that the Betti numbers of a minimal free resolution of the Stanley-Reisner ring of a cycle graph (viewed as a one-dimensional simplicial complex) are given by the number of standard Young tableaux of a given shape.
In this paper we first present summation formulas for $k$-order Eulerian polynomials and $1/k$-Eulerian polynomials. We then present combinatorial expansions of $(c(x)D)^n$ in terms of inversion sequences as well as $k$-Young tableaux, where $c(x)$ is a differentiable function in the indeterminate $x$ and $D$ is the derivative with respect to $x$. We define the $g$-indexes of $k$-Young tableaux and Young tableaux, which have important applications in combinatorics. By establishing some relations between $k$-Young tableaux and standard Young tableaux, we express Eulerian polynomials, second-ord…
Cylindric Young tableaux are combinatorial objects that first appeared in the 1990s. A natural extension of the classical notion of a Young tableau, they have since been used several times, most notably by Gessel and Krattenthaler and by Alexander Postnikov. Despite this, relatively little is known about cylindric Young tableaux. This paper is an investigation of the properties of this object. In this paper, we extend the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth Correspondence, a well-known and very useful bijection concerning regular Young tableaux, to be a correspondence between pairs of cylindric tableaux.…
We survey some recent works on standard Young tableaux of bounded height. We focus on consequences resulting from numerous bijections to lattice walks in Weyl chambers.
Using lattice path counting arguments, we reproduce a well known formula for the number of standard Young tableaux. We also produce an interesting new formula for tableaux of height $\leq 3$ using the Fourier methods of Ault and Kicey.
We study vectors formed by entries on the diagonal of standard Young tableaux of shifted shapes. Such vectors are in bijection with integer lattice points of certain integral polytopes, which are Minkowski sums of simplices. We also describe vertices of these polytopes, and construct corresponding shifted Young tableaux.
This paper completely characterizes the standard Young tableaux that can be reconstructed from their sets or multisets of $1$-minors. In particular, any standard Young tableau with at least $5$ entries can be reconstructed from its set of $1$-minors.
Based on Schützenberger's evacuation and a modification of jeu de taquin, we give a bijective proof of an identity connecting the generating function of reverse semistandard Young tableaux with bounded entries with the generating function of all semistandard Young tableaux. This solves Exercise 7.102 b of Richard Stanley's book `Enumerative Combinatorics 2'.
Closed formulas are known for $S(k,0;n)$, the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ and with at most $k$ parts, where $1\le k\le 5$. Here we study the analogue problem for $S(k,\ell;n)$, the number of standard Young tableaux of size $n$ which are contained in the $(k,\ell)$ hook. We deduce some formulas for the cases $k+\ell\le 4$.
In this paper, we give bijections between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n$ and the set of standard Young tableaux of shape $(n,n,n)$, and between the set of 4123-avoiding down-up alternating permutations of length $2n-1$ and the set of shifted standard Young tableaux of shape $(n+1, n, n-1)$ via an intermediate structure of Yamanouchi words. Moreover, we get the enumeration of 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations of even and odd length by presenting bijections between 4123-avoiding up-down alternating permutations and standard Young tableaux.
This paper deals with the distribution of descent number in standard Young tableaux of certain shapes. A simple explicit formula is presented for the number of tableaux of any shape with two rows, with any specified number of descents. For shapes of three rows with one cell in the third row recursive formulas are given, and are solved in certain cases.
We present an elegant bijection between standard Young tableaux with 2n cells and at most two rows, and pairs of standard Young tableaux of the same shape, with n+1 cells, where only the top row can have more than one cell.
Using Symbolic Computation with Maple, we can discover lots of (rigorously-proved!) facts about Standard Young Tableaux, in particular the distribution of the entries in any specific cell, and the sorting probabilities.
We present a new characterization of the shape equivalent class and the Littlewood-Richardson correspondence of Young tableaux in terms of tropical (ultradiscrete) integrable systems. As an application, an alternative proof of the "shape change theorem" is given.
Unexpected product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of certain truncated shapes are found and proved. These include shifted staircase shapes minus a square in the NE corner, rectangular shapes minus a square in the NE corner, and some variations.
We define an inversion statistic on standard Young tableaux. We prove that this statistic has the same distribution over SYT(λ) as the major index statistic by exhibiting a bijection on SYT(λ) in the spirit of the Foata map on permutations.
A tableau inversion is a pair of entries from the same column of a row-standard tableau that lack the relative ordering necessary to make the tableau column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau with precisely $i$ inversion pairs, and may be interpreted as a generalization of (column-standard) Young tableau. Inverted Young tableau that lack repeated entries were introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, and were later developed as combinatorial objects in their own right by Beagley and Drube. This paper generalizes earlier not…
Based on the direct-sum-decomposition of the rth tensor power of the defining representation of the special orthogonal group SO(2k+1) one is interested in a bijective approach for determining the Frobenius characters of the isotypic components. In particular this leads us to a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs of standard Young tableaux and orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, which we present for SO(3). Moreover we introduce the descent set of a vacillating tableau. As our bijection preserves this descent set, we also obtain the quasi-symmetric expansion of the Frobenius …
In this paper, explicit formulae for the expectation and the variance of descent functions on random standard Young tableaux are presented. Using these, it is shown that the normalized variance, $V/E^2$, is bounded if and only if a certain inequality relating tableau shape to the descent function holds.
In this paper, we propose a notion of colored Motzkin paths and establish a bijection between the $n$-cell standard Young tableaux (SYT) of bounded height and the colored Motzkin paths of length $n$. This result not only gives a lattice path interpretation of the standard Young tableaux but also reveals an unexpected intrinsic relation between the set of SYTs with at most $2d+1$ rows and the set of SYTs with at most 2d rows.
In this paper we establish an order statistics model of Young tableaux. Multiple integration over nested simplexes is applied to the enumeration of Young tableaux. A brief proof of Frobenius-Young's and Aitken's formulas is given. Partially standard Young tableaux and special truncated shapes including tableaux with a hole are discussed, the associated product formulas are given.
We give new bounds and asymptotic estimates on the number of standard Young tableaux of skew shape in a variety of special cases. Our approach is based on Naruse's hook-length formula. We also compare our bounds with the existing bounds on the numbers of linear extensions of the corresponding posets.
A combinatorial description of the crystal B(infinity) for finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras in terms of certain Young tableaux was developed by J. Hong and H. Lee. We establish an explicit bijection between these Young tableaux and canonical bases indexed by Lusztig's parametrization, and obtain a combinatorial rule for expressing the Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the set of Young tableaux.
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux and refine standard Young tableaux. They are closely tied to the descent set of standard Young tableaux and were introduced by Assaf and Searles to tighten Gessel's fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur functions. The descent set and descent statistic of standard Young tableaux repeatedly prove themselves useful to consider, and as a result, quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux make appearances in many ways outside of their original purpose. Some examples, which we present in this paper, include the Schur expansion of Jack poly…
We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux where cells can contain unordered sets of integers, with the added condition that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller that every integer at both $(i+1,j)$ and $(i,j+1)$. In this paper, we explore properties of standard set-valued Young tableaux with three rows and a fixed number of integers in every cell of each row (referred to as set-valued tableaux with row-constant density). Our primary focus is on standard set-valued Young tableaux with $1$ integer in each first-row cell, $k-1$ integers in eac…
We extend work of McKay, Morse, and Wilf by giving exact formulas and asymptotic formulas for the number of skew Young tableaux T in two situations: (1) the "inside shape" and total number of cells of T are fixed, and (2) the inside shape of T is fixed. The proofs use the theory of symmetric functions and estimates for irreducible characters of the symmetric group due to Thoma, Vershik, Kerov, and Biane.
Standard set-valued Young tableaux are a generalization of standard Young tableaux in which cells may contain more than one integer, with the added conditions that every integer at position $(i,j)$ must be smaller than every integer at positions $(i,j+1)$ and $(i+1,j)$. This paper explores the combinatorics of standard set-valued Young tableaux with two-rows, and how those tableaux may be used to provide new combinatorial interpretations of generalized Catalan numbers. New combinatorial interpretations are provided for the two-parameter Fuss-Catalan numbers (Raney numbers), the rational Catala…

Let SYT_n be the set of all standard Young tableaux with n cells. After recalling the definitions of four partial orders, the weak, KL, geometric and chain orders on SYT_n and some of their crucial properties, we prove three main results: (i)Intervals in any of these four orders essentially describe the product in a Hopf algebra of tableaux defined by Poirier and Reutenauer. (ii) The map sending a tableau to its descent set induces a homotopy equivalence of the proper parts of all of these orders on tableaux with that of the Boolean algebra 2^{[n-1]}. In particular, the Möbius function of thes…
Motivated by the study of polytopes formed as the convex hull of permutation matrices and alternating sign matrices, we define several new families of polytopes as convex hulls of sign matrices, which are certain {0,1,-1}-matrices in bijection with semistandard Young tableaux. We investigate various properties of these polytopes, including their inequality descriptions, vertices, facets, and face lattices, as well as connections to alternating sign matrix polytopes and transportation polytopes.
The number of Young Tableaux whose shape is a k by n rectangle is famously (nk)! 0! ... (k-1)!/((n+k-1)!(n+k-2)!... n!) implying that for each specific k, that sequence satisfies a linear recurrence equation with polynomial coefficients of the first order. But what about counting Young tableaux where certain "run lengths" are forbidden? Then things seem to get much more complicated. We conclude with four conjectures and pledge donations to the OEIS in honor of the first provers.
Let $g_{n_1,n_2}$ be the number of standard Young tableau of truncated shifted shape with $n_1$ rows and $n_2$ boxes in each row. By using of the integral method this paper derives the recurrence relations of $g_{3,n}$, $g_{n,4}$ and $g_{n,5}$ respectively. Specially, $g_{n,4}$ is the $(2n-1)$-st Pell number.
Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition. We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we intr…
An inverted semistandard Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a collection of inversion pairs that quantify how far the tableau is from being column semistandard. Such a tableau with precisely $k$ inversion pairs is said to be a $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau. Building upon earlier work by Fresse and the author, this paper develops generating functions for the numbers of $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau of various shapes $λ$ and contents $μ$. An easily-calculable generating function is given for the number of $k$-inverted semistandard Young tableau that "standardi…
A specialisation of a transformation formula for multi-dimensional elliptic hypergeometric series is used to provide compact, non-determinantal formulae for the generating function with respect to the major index of standard Young tableaux of skew shapes of the form "staircase minus rectangle".
We elaborate upon a bijection discovered by Cools, Draisma, Payne, and Robeva between the set of rectangular standard Young tableaux and the set of equivalence classes of chip configurations on certain metric graphs under the relation of linear equivalence. We present an explicit formula for computing the $v_0$-reduced divisors (representatives of the equivalence classes) associated to given tableaux, and use this formula to prove (i) evacuation of tableaux corresponds (under the bijection) to reflecting the metric graph, and (ii) conjugation of the tableaux corresponds to taking the Riemann-R…
Let $\mathcal{T}_3$ be the three-rowed strip. Recently Regev conjectured that the number of standard Young tableaux with $n-3$ entries in the "skew three-rowed strip" $\mathcal{T}_3 / (2,1,0)$ is $m_{n-1}-m_{n-3}$, a difference of two Motzkin numbers. This conjecture, together with hundreds of similar identities, were derived automatically and proved rigorously by Zeilberger via his powerful program and WZ method. It appears that each one is a linear combination of Motzkin numbers with constant coefficients. In this paper we will introduce a simple bijection between Motzkin paths and standard …
We present a bijection between vacillating tableaux and pairs consisting of a standard Young tableau and an orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableau for the special orthogonal group $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. This bijection is motivated by the direct-sum-decomposition of the $r$th tensor power of the defining representation of $\mathrm{SO}(2k+1)$. To formulate it, we use Kwon's orthogonal Littlewood-Richardson tableaux and introduce new alternative tableaux they are in bijection with. Moreover we use a suitably defined descent set for vacillating tableaux to determine the quasi-symmetric expansion o…
In how many ways can you place n chocolate pieces all of different sizes in an n by n chocolate box, in such a way that when you go from left to right and from top to bottom, there are no gaps AND the sizes increase along each row and each column? The answer is the well-known OEIS Sequence Number 85. To our amazement, the analogous sequence for a three-dimensional chocolate box was not there. Here we fill this gap, and more importantly, offer some computational and theoretical challenges about enumerating families of Solid Standard Young Tableaux.
We derive new combinatorial identities which may be viewed as multivariate analogs of summation formulas for hypergeometric series. As in the previous paper [Re], we start with probability distributions on the space of the infinite Young tableaux. Then we calculate the probability that the entry of a random tableau at a given box equals n=1,2,.... Summing these probabilities over n and equating the result to 1 we get a nontrivial identity. Our choice for the initial distributions is motivated by the recent work on harmonic analysis on the infinite symmetric group and related topics.
The limiting shape of the random Young diagrams associated with an inhomogeneous random word is identified as a multidimensional Brownian functional. This functional is identical in law to the spectrum of a random matrix. The Poissonized word problem is also briefy studied, and the asymptotic behavior of the shape analyzed.
Quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux connect the two most studied types of tableaux. They are a subset of semistandard Young tableaux that are also a refinement on standard Young tableaux, and they can be used to improve the fundamental quasisymmetric expansion of Schur polynomials. We prove a product formula for enumerating certain quasi-Yamanouchi tableaux and provide strong evidence that no product formula exists in general for other shapes. Along the way, we also prove some nice properties of their distribution and symmetry.
The expectation of the descent number of a random Young tableau of a fixed shape is given, and concentration around the mean is shown. This result is generalized to the major index and to other descent functions. The proof combines probabilistic arguments together with combinatorial character theory. Connections with Hecke algebras are mentioned.
A tableau inversion is a pair of entries in row-standard tableau $T$ that lie in the same column of $T$ yet lack the appropriate relative ordering to make $T$ column-standard. An $i$-inverted Young tableau is a row-standard tableau along with a precisely $i$ inversion pairs. Tableau inversions were originally introduced by Fresse to calculate the Betti numbers of Springer fibers in Type A, with the number of $i$-inverted tableaux that standardize to a fixed standard Young tableau corresponding to a specific Betti number of the associated fiber. In this paper we approach the topic of tableau in…
We define a class L_{n, k} of permutations that generalizes alternating (up-down) permutations and give bijective proofs of certain pattern-avoidance results for this class. As a special case of our results, we give two bijections between the set A_{2n}(1234) of alternating permutations of length 2n with no four-term increasing subsequence and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^n), and between the set A_{2n + 1}(1234) and standard Young tableaux of shape (3^{n - 1}, 2, 1). This represents the first enumeration of alternating permutations avoiding a pattern of length four. We also extend previ…
The hook length formula gives a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a partition shape. The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape does not always have a product formula. However, for some special skew shapes, there is a product formula. Recently, Morales, Pak and Panova joint with Krattenthaler conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for $λ=((2a+c)^{c+a},(a+c)^a)$ and $μ=(a+1,a^{a-1},1)$. They also conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shifted shape. In this pa…
We consider two examples of a fully decodable combinatorial encoding of Bernoulli schemes: the encoding via Weyl simplices and the much more complicated encoding via the RSK (Robinson--Schensted--Knuth) correspondence. In the first case, the decodability is a quite simple fact, while in the second case, this is a nontrivial result obtained by D.~Romik and P.~Śniady and based on the papers~ \cite{KV}, \cite{VK}, and others. We comment on the proofs from the viewpoint of the theory of measurable partitions; another proof, using representation theory and generalized Schur--Weyl duality, will be p…
Edelman and Greene constructed a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux and the set of balanced Young tableaux of the same shape. Fomin, Greene, Reiner and Shimozono introduced the notion of balanced Rothe tableaux of a permutation $w$, and established a bijection between the set of balanced Rothe tableaux of $w$ and the set of reduced words of $w$. In this paper, we introduce the notion of standard Rothe tableaux of $w$, which are tableaux obtained by labelling the cells of the Rothe diagram of $w$ such that each row and each column is increasing. We show that the number of stan…
We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Yo…
The asymptotics of the "$(k,\ell)$ hook" sums $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ (see~\eqref{the.sums.1}) were calculated in~\cite{berele}. It was recently realized that in~\cite[Section 7]{berele} there are few misprints and certain confusion with regard to the notations, so that the precise asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ is not clear. Here we add more details and carefully repeat these calculations, which lead to explicit values for the asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n).$
In recent work of Baik, Deift and Rains convergence of moments was established for the limiting joint distribution of the lengths of the first k rows in random Young tableaux. The main difficulty was obtaining a good estimate for the tail of the distribution and this was accomplished through a highly nontrival Riemann-Hilbert analysis. Here we give a simpler derivation. The same method is used to establish convergence of moments for a random growth model.
