We introduce lecture hall tableaux, which are fillings of a skew Young diagram satisfying certain conditions. Lecture hall tableaux generalize both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions, and also contain reverse semistandard Young tableaux as a limit case. We show that the coefficients in the Schur expansion of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials are generating functions for lecture hall tableaux. Using a Selberg-type integral we show that moments of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials, which are equal to generating functions for lecture hall tableaux of a Young diagram, have a product formula. We also explore various combinatorial properties of lecture hall tableaux.
Recently the authors introduced lecture hall tableaux in their study of multivariate little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. In this paper, we enumerate bounded lecture hall tableaux. We show that their enumeration is closely related to standard and semistandard Young tableaux. We also show that the number of bounded lecture hall tableaux is the coefficient of the Schur expansion of $s_λ(m+y_1,\dots,m+y_n)$. To prove this result, we use two main tools: non-intersecting lattice paths and bijections. In particular we use ideas developed by Krattenthaler to prove bijectively the hook content formula.
Recently the first author and Jang Soo Kim introduced lecture hall tableaux in their study of multivariate little q-Jacobi polynomials. They then enumerated bounded lecture hall tableaux and showed that their enumeration is closely related to standard and semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper we study the asymptotic behavior of these bounded tableaux thanks to two other combinatorial models: non intersecting paths on a graph whose faces are squares and pentagons and dimer models on a lattice whose faces are hexagons and octogons. We use the tangent method to investigate the arctic curve i…
Hall-Littlewood functions indexed by rectangular partitions, specialized at primitive roots of unity, can be expressed as plethysms. We propose a combinatorial proof of this formula using A. Schilling's bijection between ribbon tableaux and ribbon rigged configurations.
We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according t…
We introduce and study s-lecture hall P-partitions which is a generalization of s-lecture hall partitions to labeled (weighted) posets. We provide generating function identities for s-lecture hall P-partitions that generalize identities obtained by Savage and Schuster for s-lecture hall partitions, and by Stanley for P-partitions. We also prove that the corresponding (P,s)-Eulerian polynomials are real-rooted for certain pairs (P,s), and speculate on unimodality properties of these polynomials.
Bousquet-Mélou & Eriksson's lecture hall theorem generalizes Euler's celebrated distinct-odd partition theorem. We present an elementary and transparent proof of a refined version of the lecture hall theorem using a simple bijection involving abacus diagrams.
Over the past twenty years, lecture hall partitions have emerged as fundamental combinatorial structures, leading to new generalizations and interpretations of classical theorems and new results. In recent years, geometric approaches to lecture hall partitions have used polyhedral geometry to discover further properties of these rich combinatorial objects. In this paper we give an overview of some of the surprising connections that have surfaced in the process of trying to understand the lecture hall partitions.
Given a family of lattice polytopes, a common endeavor in Ehrhart theory is the classification of those polytopes in the family that are Gorenstein, or more generally level. In this article, we consider these questions for $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes, which are a family of simplices arising from $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions. In particular, we provide concrete classifications for both of these properties purely in terms of $\boldsymbol{s}$-inversion sequences. Moreover, for a large subfamily of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall polytopes, we provide a more geometric classifi…
We show here that the refined theorems for both lecture hall partitions and anti-lecture hall compositions can be obtained as straightforward consequences of two q-Chu Vandermonde identities, once an appropriate recurrence is derived. We use this approach to get new lecture hall-type theorems for truncated objects. We compute their generating function and give two different multivariate refinements of these new results : the q-calculus approach gives (u,v,q)-refinements, while a completely different approach gives odd/even (x,y)-refinements. From this, we are able to give a combinatorial chara…
Though much is known about ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes, there are still many unanswered questions. In this paper, we show that ${\bf s}$-lecture hall polytopes satisfy the integer decomposition property (IDP) in the case of monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequences. Given restrictions on a monotonic ${\bf s}$-sequence, we discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for the Fano, reflexive and Gorenstein properties. Additionally, we give a construction for producing Gorenstein/IDP lecture hall polytopes.
In 1997 Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson introduced lecture hall partitions as the inversion vectors of elements of the parabolic quotient $\widetilde{C}/C$. We provide a new view of their correspondence that allows results in one domain to be translated into the other. We determine the equivalence between combinatorial statistics in each domain and use this correspondence to translate certain generating function formulas on lecture hall partitions to new observations about $\widetilde{C}/C$.
The s-lecture hall polytopes P_s are a class of integer polytopes defined by Savage and Schuster which are closely related to the lecture hall partitions of Eriksson and Bousquet-Mélou. We define a half-open parallelopiped Par_s associated with P_s and give a simple description of its integer points. We use this description to recover earlier results of Savage et al. on the δ-vector (or h^*-vector) and to obtain the connections to s-ascents and s-descents, as well as some generalizations of these results.
The Lecture Hall cone is a simplicial cone whose lattice points naturally correspond to Lecture Hall partitions. The celebrated Lecture Hall Theorem of Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson states that a particular specialization of its multivariate Ehrhart series factors in a very nice and unexpected way. Over the years, several proofs of this result have been found, but it is still not considered to be well-understood from a geometric perspective. In this note we propose two conjectures which aim at clarifying this result. Our main conjecture is that the Ehrhart ring of the Lecture Hall cone is actual…
In this note, we investigate some of the fundamental algebraic and geometric properties of $s$-lecture hall simplices and their generalizations. We show that all $s$-lecture hall order polytopes, which simultaneously generalize $s$-lecture hall simplices and order polytopes, satisfy a property which implies the integer decomposition property. This answers one conjecture of Hibi, Olsen and Tsuchiya. By relating $s$-lecture hall polytopes to alcoved polytopes, we then use this property to show that families of $s$-lecture hall simplices admit a quadratic Gröbner basis with a square-free initial …
Lecture hall partitions are a fundamental combinatorial structure which have been studied extensively over the past two decades. These objects have produced new results, as well as reinterpretations and generalizations of classicial results, which are of interest in combinatorial number theory, enumerative combinatorics, and convex geometry. In a recent survey of Savage \cite{Savage-LHP-Survey}, a wide variety of these results are nicely presented. However, since the publication of this survey, there have been many new developments related to the polyhedral geometry and Ehrhart theory arising …
This paper examines the one-to-one-to-one correspondence between threshold graphs, Betti numbers of quotients of polynomial rings by $2$-linear ideals, and anti-lecture hall compositions. In particular, we establish new explicit combinatorial mappings between each of these classes of objects and calculate the expected values of the Betti numbers and anti-lecture hall composition corresponding to a random threshold graph.
We consider families of finite sets that we call shellable and that have been characterized by Chang and by Hirst and Hughes as being the families of sets that admit unique solutions to Hall's marriage problem. In this paper, we introduce a natural generalization of Edelman and Greene's balanced tableaux that involves families of sets that satisfy Hall's marriage Condition and certain words in $[n]^m$, then prove that shellable families can be characterized by a strong existence condition relating to this generalization. As a consequence of this characterization, we show that the average numbe…
In the interest of finding the minimum additive generating set for the set of $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall partitions, we compute the Hilbert bases for the $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in certain cases. In particular, we compute the Hilbert bases for two well-studied families of sequences, namely the $1\mod k$ sequences and the $\ell$-sequences. Additionally, we provide a characterization of the Hilbert bases for $\boldsymbol{u}$-generated Gorenstein $\boldsymbol{s}$-lecture hall cones in low dimensions.
We investigate the arithmetic-geometric structure of the lecture hall cone \[ L_n \ := \ \left\{λ\in \mathbb{R}^n: \, 0\leq \frac{λ_1}{1}\leq \frac{λ_2}{2}\leq \frac{λ_3}{3}\leq \cdots \leq \frac{λ_n}{n}\right\} . \] We show that $L_n$ is isomorphic to the cone over the lattice pyramid of a reflexive simplex whose Ehrhart $h^*$-polynomial is given by the $(n-1)$st Eulerian polynomial, and prove that lecture hall cones admit regular, flag, unimodular triangulations. After explicitly describing the Hilbert basis for $L_n$, we conclude with observations and a conjecture regarding the structure of…
For an integer $m\ge 2$, a partition $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots)$ is called $m$-falling, a notion introduced by Keith, if the least nonnegative residues mod $m$ of $λ_i$'s form a nonincreasing sequence. We extend a bijection originally due to the third author to deduce a lecture hall theorem for such $m$-falling partitions. A special case of this result gives rise to a finite version of Pak-Postnikov's $(m,c)$-generalization of Euler's theorem. Our work is partially motivated by a recent extension of Euler's theorem for all moduli, due to Keith and Xiong. We note that their result actually can be refi…
Five simple guidelines are proposed to compute the generating function for the nonnegative integer solutions of a system of linear inequalities. In contrast to other approaches, the emphasis is on deriving recurrences. We show how to use the guidelines strategically to solve some nontrivial enumeration problems in the theory of partitions and compositions. This includes a strikingly different approach to lecture hall-type theorems, with new $q$-series identities arising in the process. For completeness, we prove that the guidelines suffice to find the generating function for any system of homo…
We show that the number of anti-lecture hall compositions of n with the first entry not exceeding k-2 equals the number of overpartitions of n with non-overlined parts not congruent to $0,\pm 1$ modulo k. This identity can be considered as a refined version of the anti-lecture hall theorem of Corteel and Savage. To prove this result, we find two Rogers-Ramanujan type identities for overpartition which are analogous to the Rogers-Ramanjan type identities due to Andrews. When k is odd, we give an alternative proof by using a generalized Rogers-Ramanujan identity due to Andrews, a bijection of Co…
We present a sum-product formula for the classical Hall polynomial which is based on tableaux that have been introduced by T. Klein in 1969. In the formula, each summand corresponds to a Klein tableau, while the product is taken over the cardinalities of automorphism groups of short exact sequences which are derived from the tableau. For each such sequence, one can read off from the tableau the summands in an indecomposable decomposition, and the size of their homomorphism and automorphism groups. Klein tableaux are refinements of Littlewood-Richardson tableaux in the sense that each entry $\e…
We show that several families of polynomials defined via fillings of diagrams satisfy linear recurrences under a natural operation on the shape of the diagram. We focus on key polynomials, (also known as Demazure characters), and Demazure atoms. The same technique can be applied to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and dual Grothendieck polynomials. The motivation behind this is that such recurrences are strongly connected with other nice properties, such as interpretations in terms of lattice points in polytopes and divided difference operators.
In 1997, Bousquet-Melou and Eriksson initiated the study of lecture hall partitions, a fascinating family of partitions that yield a finite version of Euler's celebrated odd/distinct partition theorem. In subsequent work on s-lecture hall partitions, they considered the self-reciprocal property for various associated generating functions, with the goal of characterizing those sequences s that give rise to generating functions of the form $((1-q^{e_1})(1-q^{e_2})...(1-q^{e_n}))^{-1}$. We continue this line of investigation, connecting their work to the more general context of Gorenstein cones. …

In this paper, we give a bijective proof of the reduced lecture hall partition theorem. It is possible to extend this bijection in lecture hall partition theorem. And refined versions of each theorems are also presented.
We construct a basis of the Garsia-Procesi ring using the catabolizability type of standard Young tableaux and the charge statistic. This basis turns out to be equal to the descent basis defined in Carlsson-Chou (2024+). Our new construction connects the combinatorics of the basis with the well-known combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials $\tilde{H}_μ[X;q]$, due to Lascoux, which expresses the polynomials as a sum over standard tableaux that satisfy a catabolizability condition. In addition, we prove that identifying a basis for the antisymmetric part of $R_μ$ with …
The Eulerian polynomials and derangement polynomials are two well-studied generating functions that frequently arise in combinatorics, algebra, and geometry. When one makes an appearance, the other often does so as well, and their corresponding generalizations are similarly linked. This is this case in the theory of subdivisions of simplicial complexes, where the Eulerian polynomial is an $h$-polynomial and the derangement polynomial is its local $h$-polynomial. Separately, in Ehrhart theory the Eulerian polynomials are generalized by the $h^\ast$-polynomials of $s$-lecture hall simplices. Her…
In 1997, Bousquet-Mélou and Eriksson stated a broad generalization of Euler's distinct-odd partition theorem, namely the $(k,l)$-Euler theorem. Their identity involved the $(k,l)$-lecture-hall partitions, which, unlike usual difference conditions of partitions in Rogers-Ramanujan type identities, satisfy some ratio constraints. In a 2008 paper, in response to a question suggested by Richard Stanley, Savage and Yee provided a simple bijection for the $l$-lecture-hall partitions (the case $k=l$), whose specialization in $l=2$ corresponds to Sylvester's bijection. Subsequently, as an open questio…
We give a direct proof of the equivalence between the Giambelli and Pieri type formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions using Young's raising operators, parallel to joint work with Buch and Kresch for the Schubert classes on isotropic Grassmannians. We prove several closely related mirror identities enjoyed by the Giambelli polynomials, which lead to new recursions for Schubert classes. The raising operator approach is applied to obtain tableau formulas for Hall-Littlewood functions, theta polynomials, and related Stanley symmetric functions. Finally, we introduce the notion of a skew element w …
Classical Schur P-functions are the particular case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials when the parameter is equal to -1. We introduce factorial (interpolation) analogues of Schur P-functions. A dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram is the number of standard tableaux of the given shape. Also these numbers are equal up to simple factors to the decomposition coefficients of the restriction of an irreducible representation of a spin-symmetric group to a smaller spin-symmetric group. In terms of the factorial Schur P-functions we obtain an explicit formula for the dimension of a skew shifted Young…
