Classical Schur P-functions are the particular case of Hall-Littlewood polynomials when the parameter is equal to -1. We introduce factorial (interpolation) analogues of Schur P-functions. A dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram is the number of standard tableaux of the given shape. Also these numbers are equal up to simple factors to the decomposition coefficients of the restriction of an irreducible representation of a spin-symmetric group to a smaller spin-symmetric group. In terms of the factorial Schur P-functions we obtain an explicit formula for the dimension of a skew shifted Young diagram. The main application of this formula is the new derivation of Nazarov's classification of undecomposable projective characters of the infinite symmetric group.
A few years ago, Naruse presented a beautiful cancellation-free hook-length formula for skew shapes, both straight and shifted. The formula involves a sum over objects called \emph{excited diagrams}, and the term corresponding to each excited diagram has hook lengths in the denominator, like the classical hook-length formula due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. Recently, the formula for skew straight shapes was proved via a simple bumping algorithm. The aim of this paper is to extend this result to skew shifted shapes. Since straight skew shapes are special cases of skew shifted shapes, this is …
The noncommutative projective scheme $\operatorname{\mathsf{Proj_{nc}}} S$ of a $(\pm 1)$-skew polynomial algebra $S$ in $n$ variables is considered to be a $(\pm 1)$-skew projective space of dimension $n-1$. In this paper, using combinatorial methods, we give a classification theorem for $(\pm 1)$-skew projective spaces. Specifically, among other equivalences, we prove that $(\pm 1)$-skew projective spaces $\operatorname{\mathsf{Proj_{nc}}} S$ and $\operatorname{\mathsf{Proj_{nc}}} S'$ are isomorphic if and only if certain graphs associated to $S$ and $S'$ are switching (or mutation) equivale…
Plane partitions have been widely studied in Mathematics since MacMahon. See, for example, the works by Andrews, Macdonald, Stanley, Sagan and Krattenthaler. The Schur process approach, introduced by Okounkov and Reshetikhin, and further developed by Borodin, Corwin, Corteel, Savelief and Vuletić, has been proved to be a powerful tool in the study of various kinds of plane partitions. The exact enumerations of ordinary plane partitions, shifted plane partitions and cylindric partitions could be derived from two summation formulas for Schur processes, namely, the open summation formula and the …
In this paper we completely classify infinite cyclic projective skew translation quadrangles through a new approach first partially introduced in [17], and in the present paper (unexpectedly) adapted to the infinite case. Very surprisingly, these objects do not exist and only occur in the finite case.
We prove Stanley's conjecture that, if delta_n is the staircase shape, then the skew Schur functions s_{delta_n / mu} are non-negative sums of Schur P-functions. We prove that the coefficients in this sum count certain fillings of shifted shapes. In particular, for the skew Schur function s_{delta_n / delta_{n-2}}, we discuss connections with Eulerian numbers and alternating permutations.
We classify the $Q$-multiplicity-free skew Schur $Q$-functions. Towards this result, we also provide new relations between the shifted Littlewood-Richardson coefficients.
We introduce coplactic raising and lowering operators $E'_i$, $F'_i$, $E_i$, and $F_i$ on shifted skew semistandard tableaux. We show that the primed operators and unprimed operators each independently form type A Kashiwara crystals (but not Stembridge crystals) on the same underlying set and with the same weight functions. When taken together, the result is a new kind of `doubled crystal' structure that recovers the combinatorics of type B Schubert calculus: the highest-weight elements of our crystals are precisely the shifted Littlewood-Richardson tableaux, and their generating functions are…
We present two new problems on lower bounds for resolution Betti numbers of monomial ideals generated in a fixed degree. The first concerns any such ideal and bounds the total Betti numbers, while the second concerns ideals that are quadratic and bihomogeneous with respect to two variable sets, but gives a more finely graded lower bound. These problems are solved for certain classes of ideals that generalize (in two different directions) the edge ideals of threshold graphs and Ferrers graphs. In the process, we produce particularly simple cellular linear resolutions for strongly stable and squ…
While equality of skew Schur functions is well understood, the problem of determining when two skew Schur $Q$ functions are equal is still largely open. It has been studied in the case of ribbon shapes in 2008 by Barekat and van Willigenburg, and this paper approaches the problem for near-ribbon shapes, formed by adding one box to a ribbon skew shape. We particularly consider frayed ribbons, that is, the near-ribbons whose shifted skew shape is not an ordinary skew shape. We conjecture, with evidence, that all Schur $Q$ functions of frayed ribbon shape are distinct up to antipodal reflection. …

We present a bijection between the set of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape, and the set of marked shifted standard Young tableaux of a certain shifted shape. Numerically, this result is due to DeWitt (2012). Combined with other known bijections this gives a bijective proof of the product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of staircase minus rectangle shape. This resolves an open problem by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019), and allows for efficient random sampling. Other applications include a bijection for semistandard Young tableaux, and a bijective proo…
We introduce a new operation on skew diagrams called composition of transpositions, and use it and a Jacobi-Trudi style formula to derive equalities on skew Schur Q-functions whose indexing shifted skew diagram is an ordinary skew diagram. When this skew diagram is a ribbon, we conjecture necessary and sufficient conditions for equality of ribbon Schur Q-functions. Moreover, we determine all relations between ribbon Schur Q-functions; show they supply a Z-basis for skew Schur Q-functions; assert their irreducibility; and show that the non-commutative analogue of ribbon Schur Q-functions is the…
Recently Okada defined algebraically ninth variation skew Q-functions, in parallel to Macdonald's ninth variation skew Schur functions. Here we introduce a skew shifted tableaux definition of these ninth variation skew Q-functions, and prove by means of a non-intersecting lattice path model a Pfaffian outside decomposition result in the form of a ninth variation version of Hamel's Pfaffian outside decomposition identity. As corollaries to this we derive Pfaffian identities generalizing those of Josefiak-Pragacz, Nimmo, and most recently Okada. As a preamble to this we present a parallel develo…
We introduce an enriched analogue of Lam and Pylyavskyy's theory of set-valued $P$-partitions. An an application, we construct a $K$-theoretic version of Stembridge's Hopf algebra of peak quasisymmetric functions. We show that the symmetric part of this algebra is generated by Ikeda and Naruse's shifted stable Grothendieck polynomials. We give the first proof that the natural skew analogues of these power series are also symmetric. A central tool in our constructions is a "$K$-theoretic" Hopf algebra of labeled posets, which may be of independent interest. Our results also lead to some new exp…
For any complex number $α$ and any even-size skew-symmetric matrix $B$, we define a generalization $\pfaα(B)$ of the pfaffian $\pf(B)$ which we call the $α$-pfaffian. The $α$-pfaffian is a pfaffian analogue of the $α$-determinant. It gives the pfaffian at $α=-1$. We give some formulas for $α$-pfaffians and study the positivity. Further we define point processes determined by the $α$-pfaffian. Also we provide a linear algebraic proof of the explicit pfaffian expression for the correlation function of the shifted Schur measure.
The hook length formula gives a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a partition shape. The number of standard Young tableaux of a skew shape does not always have a product formula. However, for some special skew shapes, there is a product formula. Recently, Morales, Pak and Panova joint with Krattenthaler conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of shape $λ/μ$ for $λ=((2a+c)^{c+a},(a+c)^a)$ and $μ=(a+1,a^{a-1},1)$. They also conjectured a product formula for the number of standard Young tableaux of a certain skew shifted shape. In this pa…
The z-measures on partitions originated from the problem of harmonic analysis of linear representations of the infinite symmetric group in the works of Kerov, Olshanski and Vershik (1993, 2004). A similar family corresponding to projective representations was introduced by Borodin (1997). The latter measures live on strict partitions (i.e., partitions with distinct parts), and the z-measures are supported by all partitions. In this note we describe some combinatorial relations between these two families of measures using the well-known doubling of shifted Young diagrams.
We show that the shifted rank, or srank, of any partition $λ$ with distinct parts equals the lowest degree of the terms appearing in the expansion of Schur's $Q_λ$ function in terms of power sum symmetric functions. This gives an affirmative answer to a conjecture of Clifford. As pointed out by Clifford, the notion of the srank can be naturally extended to a skew partition $λ/μ$ as the minimum number of bars among the corresponding skew bar tableaux. While the srank conjecture is not valid for skew partitions, we give an algorithm to compute the srank.
We generalise the Elekes-Szabó theorem to arbitrary arity and dimension and characterise the complex algebraic varieties without power saving. The characterisation involves certain algebraic subgroups of commutative algebraic groups endowed with an extra structure arising from a skew field of endomorphisms. We also extend the Erdős-Szemerédi sum-product phenomenon to elliptic curves. Our approach is based on Hrushovski's framework of pseudo-finite dimensions and the abelian group configuration theorem.
This paper is an updated version of a survey on projective configurations of subspaces in general position. The preceding version was published in Russian in 1989 and in English in 1990 (in Leningrad Math. J.) opening a new section ``Light reading for the professional''. The paper is written in the form of introduction to the subject, with much of the material accessible to advanced high school students. However, in the part of the survey concerning configurations of lines in general position in the three-dimensional space the exposition is free from any background restrictions. We have added …
We prove the conjecture of Falikman--Friedland--Loewy on the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex symmetric matrices of rank at most $k$. We also characterize the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $n\times n$ complex skew symmetric matrices of rank at most $2p$. We give recursive relations which determine the parity of the degrees of projective varieties of $m\times n$ complex matrices of rank at most $k$. In the case the degrees of these varieties are odd, we characterize the minimal dimensions of subspaces of $n\times n$ skew symmetric real matr…
We introduce interpolation analogues of Schur Q-functions - the multiparameter Schur Q-functions. We obtain for them several results: a combinatorial formula, generating functions for one-row and two-rows functions, vanishing and characterization properties, a Pieri-type formula, a Nimmo-type formula (a relation of two Pfaffians), a Giambelli-Schur-type Pfaffian formula, a determinantal formula for the transition coefficients between multiparameter Schur Q-functions with different parameters. We write an explicit Pfaffian expression for the dimension of skew shifted Young diagram. This paper i…
We begin by deriving an action of the 0-Hecke algebra on standard reverse composition tableaux and use it to discover 0-Hecke modules whose quasisymmetric characteristics are the natural refinements of Schur functions known as quasisymmetric Schur functions. Furthermore, we classify combinatorially which of these 0-Hecke modules are indecomposable. From here, we establish that the natural equivalence relation arising from our 0-Hecke action has equivalence classes that are isomorphic to subintervals of the weak Bruhat order on the symmetric group. Focussing on the equivalence classes containin…
I present a set of remarks related to joint works \cite{paper1},\cite{paper2},\cite{paper3},\cite{MMNO}. These are remarks about polynomials solutions and vertex operators, eigenproblem for polynomials and a remark related to the the conjecture of Alexandrov and Mironov, Morozov about the ratios of the projective Schur functions. New results on the bilinear relations between characters of the symmetric and of the Sergeev group and on bilinear relations between skew Schur and projective Schur functions and also between shifted Schur and projective Schur functions are added. Certain new matrix m…
Motivated by Stanley's results in \cite{St02}, we generalize the rank of a partition $λ$ to the rank of a shifted partition $S(λ)$. We show that the number of bars required in a minimal bar tableau of $S(λ)$ is max$(o, e + (\ell(λ) \mathrm{mod} 2))$, where $o$ and $e$ are the number of odd and even rows of $λ$. As a consequence we show that the irreducible projective characters of $S_n$ vanish on certain conjugacy classes. Another corollary is a lower bound on the degree of the terms in the expansion of Schur's $Q_λ$ symmetric functions in terms of the power sum symmetric functions.
The geometry of the real four-qubit Pauli group, being embodied in the structure of the symplectic polar space W(7,2), is analyzed in terms of ovoids of a hyperbolic quadric of PG(7,2), the seven-dimensional projective space of order two. The quadric is selected in such a way that it contains all 135 symmetric elements of the group. Under such circumstances, the third element on the line defined by any two points of an ovoid is skew-symmetric, as is the nucleus of the conic defined by any three points of an ovoid. Each ovoid thus yields 36/84 elements of the former/latter type, accounting for …
