A coarse embedding of a metric space X into a metric space Y is a map f: X-->Y satisfying for every x, y in X:
ϕ_1(d(x,y)) \leq d(f(x),f(y)) \leq ϕ_2(d(x,y))
where ϕ_1 and ϕ_2 are nondecreasing functions on [0,\infty) with values in [0,\infty), with the condition that ϕ_1(t) tends to \infty as t tends to \infty. We show that \ell_p does not coarsely embed in a Hilbert space for 2<p<\infty.
In these notes, we study the relation between uniform and coarse embeddings between Banach spaces. In order to understand this relation better, we also look at the problem of when a coarse embedding can be assumed to be topological. Among other results, we show that if a Banach space $X$ uniformly embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and uniformly embeds into $Y$, and if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a minimal Banach space $Y$, then $X$ simultaneously coarsely and homeomorphically embeds into $Y$ by a map with uniformly continuous inverse.
We study how well a quasi-Banach space can be coarsely embedded into a Hilbert space. Given any quasi-Banach space X which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space, we compute its Hilbert space compression exponent. We also show that the Hilbert space compression exponent of X is equal to the supremum of the amounts of snowflakings of X which admit a bi-Lipschitz embedding into a Hilbert space.
A map f between two metric spaces (X,d_1) and (Y,d_2) is called a coarse embedding of X into Y if there exist two nondecreasing functions phi_1, phi_2:[0,\infty) --> [0,\infty) such that: phi_1(d_1(x,y)) \leq d_2(f(x),f(y)) \leq phi_2(d_1(x,y)) for all x, y in X, and phi_1(t) tends to \infty as t tends to \infty. We characterize those quasi-Banach spaces that have a coarse embedding into a Hilbert space.
Krivine and Maurey proved in 1981 that every stable Banach space contains almost isometric copies of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In 1983, Raynaud showed that if a Banach space uniformly embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ must contain an isomorphic copy of $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In these notes, we show that if a Banach space coarsely embeds into a superstable Banach space, then $X$ has a spreading model isomorphic to $\ell_p$, for some $p\in[1,\infty)$. In particular, we obtain that there exist reflexive Banach spaces which do not coarsely embed into any sup…
We prove that not every metric space embeds coarsely into an Alexandrov space of nonpositive curvature. This answers a question of Gromov (1993) and is in contrast to the fact that any metric space embeds coarsely into an Alexandrov space of nonnegative curvature, as shown by Andoni, Naor and Neiman (2015). We establish this statement by proving that a metric space which is $q$-barycentric for some $q\in [1,\infty)$ has metric cotype $q$ with sharp scaling parameter. Our proof utilizes nonlinear (metric space-valued) martingale inequalities and yields sharp bounds even for some classical Banac…
It is known that the expanders arising as increasing sequences of level sets of warped cones, as introduced by the second-named author, do not coarsely embed into a Banach space as soon as the corresponding warped cone does not coarsely embed into this Banach space. Combining this with non-embeddability results for warped cones by Nowak and Sawicki, which relate the non-embeddability of a warped cone to a spectral gap property of the underlying action, we provide new examples of expanders that do not coarsely embed into any Banach space with nontrivial type. Moreover, we prove that these expan…
In these notes, we study nonlinear embeddings between Banach spaces which are also weakly sequentially continuous. In particular, our main result implies that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely (resp. uniformly) embeds into a Banach space $Y$ by a weakly sequentially continuous map, then every spreading model $(e_n)_n$ of a normalized weakly null sequence in $X$ satisfies \[\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_{\overlineδ_Y}\lesssim\|e_1+\ldots+e_k\|_S,\] where $\overlineδ_Y$ is the modulus of asymptotic uniform convexity of $Y$. Among other results, we obtain Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$ so that $X$ coarsely (resp. u…
We construct a finitely generated group which is an extension of two finitely generated groups coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space but which itself does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space. Our construction also provides a new infinite monster group: the first example of a finitely generated group that does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space and yet does not contain a weakly embedded expander.
We prove that the class of reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ Banach spaces is coarsely rigid, meaning that if a Banach space $X$ coarsely embeds into a reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space $Y$, then $X$ is also reflexive and asymptotic-$c_0$. In order to achieve this result we provide a purely metric characterization of this class of Banach spaces. This metric characterization takes the form of a concentration inequality for Lipschitz maps on the Hamming graphs, which is rigid under coarse embeddings. Using an example of a quasi-reflexive asymptotic-$c_0$ space, we show that this concentration inequality…

We construct the first example of a coarsely non-amenable (= without Guoliang Yu's property A) metric space with bounded geometry which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space.
Enflo constructed a countable metric space that may not be uniformly embedded into any metric space of positive generalized roundness. Dranishnikov, Gong, Lafforgue and Yu modified Enflo's example to construct a locally finite metric space that may not be coarsely embedded into any Hilbert space. In this paper we meld these two examples into one simpler construction. The outcome is a locally finite metric space $(\mathfrak{Z}, ζ)$ which is strongly non embeddable in the sense that it may not be embedded uniformly or coarsely into any metric space of non zero generalized roundness. Moreover, we…
The main purpose of the paper is to find some expansion properties of locally finite metric spaces which do not embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. The obtained result is used to show that infinite locally finite graphs excluding a minor embed coarsely into a Hilbert space. In an appendix a direct proof of the latter result is given.
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
We generalize the construction of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula of a box space of the free group which admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space. We show that for a finitely generated free group, the box space corresponding to the derived $m$-series (for any integer $m\geq 2$) coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This gives new examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have Yu's property A.
We investigate how coarse embeddability of box spaces into Hilbert space behaves under group extensions. In particular, we prove a result which implies that a semidirect product of a finitely generated free group by a finitely generated residually finite amenable group has a box space which coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This provides a new class of examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have property A, generalising the example of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula.
We show that warped cones over actions with spectral gaps do not embed coarsely into large classes of Banach spaces. In particular, there exist warped cones over actions of the free group that do not embed coarsely into $L_p$-spaces and there are warped cones over discrete group actions that do not embed into any Banach space with non-trivial type.
We give a direct proof of the fact that a quasi-Banach space coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space if and only if it uniformly embeds into a Hilbert space.
In this paper we provide several \emph{metric universality} results. We exhibit for certain classes $\cC$ of metric spaces, families of metric spaces $(M_i, d_i)_{i\in I}$ which have the property that a metric space $(X,d_X)$ in $\cC$ is coarsely, resp. Lipschitzly, universal for all spaces in $\cC$ if the collection of spaces $(M_i,d_i)_{i\in I}$ equi-coarsely, respectively equi-Lipschitzly, embeds into $(X,d_X)$. Such families are built as certain Schreier-type metric subsets of $\co$. We deduce a metric analog to Bourgain's theorem, which generalized Szlenk's theorem, and prove that a space…
We exhibit a finitely generated group $G$ and a sequence of finite index normal subgroups $N_n\trianglelefteq G$ such that for every finite generating subset $S\subseteq G$, the sequence of finite Cayley graphs $(G/N_n, S)$ does not coarsely embed into any $L^p$-space for $1\leqslant p<\infty$ (moreover, into any uniformly curved Banach space), and yet admits no weakly embedded expander. The reason why our examples do not coarsely embed is a new phenomenon called relative expansion, which we define in terms of Poincaré inequalities.
In this paper, we connect the rigidity problem and the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for Roe algebras. In particular, we show that if $X$ and $Y$ are two uniformly locally finite metric spaces such that their Roe algebras are $*$-isomorphic, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent provided either $X$ or $Y$ satisfies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. It is well-known that coarse embeddability into a Hilbert space implies the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients. On the other hand, we provide a new example of a finitely generated group satisfying the coarse Baum-C…
We generalize the notions of asymptotic dimension and coarse embeddings from metric spaces to quantum metric spaces in the sense of Kuperberg and Weaver. We show that quantum asymptotic dimension behaves well with respect to metric quotients and direct sums, and is preserved under quantum coarse embeddings. Moreover, we prove that a quantum metric space that equi-coarsely contains a sequence of reflexive quantum expanders must have infinite asymptotic dimension. This is done by proving a quantum version of a vertex-isoperimetric inequality for expanders, based upon a previously known edge-isop…

The isometric embeddings $\ell_{2;K}^m\to\ell_{p;K}^n$ ($m\geq 2$, $p\in 2\N$) over a field $K\in{R, C, H}$ are considered, and an upper bound for the minimal $n$ is proved. In the commutative case ($K\neq H$) the bound was obtained by Delbaen, Jarchow and Pełczy{ń}ski (1998) in a different way.
James Tree Space ($\mathcal{JT}$), introduced by R. James, is the first Banach space constructed having non-separable conjugate and not containing $\ell^1$. James actually proved that every infinite dimensional subspace of $\mathcal{JT}$ contains a Hilbert space, which implies the $\ell^1$ non-embedding. In this expository article, we present a direct proof of the $\ell^1$ non-embedding, using Rosenthal's $\ell^1$- Theorem and some measure theoretic arguments, namely Riesz's Representation Theorem.
We give sufficient conditions on a Banach space $X$ which ensure that $\ell_{\infty}$ embeds in $\mathcal{L}(X)$, the space of all operators on $X$. We say that a basic sequence $(e_n)$ is quasisubsymmetric if for any two increasing sequences $(k_n)$ and $(\ell_n)$ of positive integers with $k_n \leq \ell_n$ for all $n$, we have that $(e_{k_n})$ dominates $(e_{\ell_n})$. We prove that if a Banach space $X$ has a seminormalized quasisubsymmetric basis then $\ell_{\infty}$ embeds in $\mathcal{L}(X)$.
We show that the dual of every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space contains an isometric copy of $\ell_\infty$ and that it is often the case that a Lipschitz-free Banach space contains a $1$-complemented subspace isometric to $\ell_1$. Even though we do not know whether the latter is true for every infinite-dimensional Lipschitz-free Banach space, we show that the space is never rotund. Further, in the last section we survey the relations between "isometric embedding of~$\ell_\infty$ into the dual" and "containing as good copy of~$\ell_1$ as possible" in a general Banach space.
See title. (A Banach space is said to be L-embedded if it is complemented in its bidual such that the norm between the two complementary subspaces is additive.)
Using a recent result of Batson, Spielman and Srivastava, We obtain a tight estimate on the dimension of $\ell_p^n$, $p$ an even integer, needed to almost isometrically contain all $k$-dimensional subspaces of $L_p$.
Given $1< p < q < \infty$ it is well know that the natural embedding of Lebesgue sequence spaces $\ell_p \hookrightarrow \ell_q$ is strictly singular. In this paper we extend this classical results and show that even the natural non-compact embedding between Lebesgue and weak Lebesgue sequence spaces $\ell_{p}\hookrightarrow \ell_{p,\infty}$ is strictly singular.
In this note we prove that the Kalton interlaced graphs do not equi-coarsely embed into the James space $\mathcal J$ nor into its dual $\mathcal J^*$. It is a particular case of a more general result on the non equi-coarse embeddability of the Kalton graphs into quasi-reflexive spaces with a special asymptotic stucture. This allows us to exhibit a coarse invariant for Banach spaces, namely the non equi-coarse embeddability of this family of graphs, which is very close to but different from the celebrated property $\mathcal Q$ of Kalton. We conclude with a remark on the coarse geometry of the J…
Let $\M$ be a semi-finite von Neumann algebra equipped with a faithful normal trace $τ$. We study the subspace structures of non-commutative Lorentz spaces $L_{p,q}(\M, τ)$, extending results of Carothers and Dilworth to the non-commutative settings. In particular, we show that, under natural conditions on indices, $\ell_p$ can not be embedded into $L_{p,q}(\M, τ)$. As applications, we prove that for $0<p<\infty$ with $p \neq 2$ then $\ell_p$ cannot be strongly embedded into $L_p(\M,τ)$. Thus providing a non-commutative extension of a result of Kalton for $0<p<1$ and a result of Rosenthal for …
We study the nonlinear embeddability of Banach spaces and the equi-embeddability of the family of Kalton's interlaced graphs $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ into dual spaces. Notably, we define and study a modification of Kalton's property $\mathcal Q$ that we call property $\mathcal{Q}_p$ (with $p \in (1,+\infty]$). We show that if $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-coarse Lipschitzly embeds into $X^*$, then the Szlenk index of $X$ is greater than $ω$, and that this is optimal, i.e., there exists a separable dual space $Y^*$ that contains $([\mathbb N]^k,d_{\mathbb K})_k$ equi-Lipschitz…
We prove that if continuum is not a Kunen cardinal, then there is a uniform Eberlein compact space $K$ such that the Banach space $C(K)$ does not embed isometrically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$. We prove a similar result for isomorphic embeddings. We also construct a consistent example of a uniform Eberlein compactum whose space of continuous functions embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty/c_0$, but fails to embed isometrically. As far as we know it is the first example of this kind.
We show that if $X$ and $Y$ are uniformly locally finite metric spaces whose uniform Roe algebras, $\cstu(X)$ and $\cstu(Y)$, are isomorphic as \cstar-algebras, then $X$ and $Y$ are coarsely equivalent metric spaces. Moreover, we show that coarse equivalence between $X$ and $Y$ is equivalent to Morita equivalence between $\cstu(X)$ and $\cstu(Y)$. As an application, we obtain that if $Γ$ and $Λ$ are finitely generated groups, then the crossed products $\ell_\infty(Γ)\rtimes_rΓ$ and $ \ell_\infty(Λ)\rtimes_rΛ$ are isomorphic if and only if $Γ$ and $Λ$ are bi-Lipschitz equivalent.
We prove that a WLD subspace of the space $\ell_\infty^c(Γ)$ consisting of all bounded, countably supported functions on a set $Γ$ embeds isomorphically into $\ell_\infty$ if and only if it does not contain isometric copies of $c_0(ω_1)$. Moreover, a subspace of $\ell_\infty^c(ω_1)$ is constructed that has an unconditional basis, does not embed into $\ell_\infty$, and whose every weakly compact subset is separable (in particular, it cannot contain any isomorphic copies of $c_0(ω_1)$).
We present a relation between sparsity and non-Euclidean isomorphic embeddings. We introduce a general restricted isomorphism property and show how it enables to construct embeddings of $\ell_p^n$, $p > 0$, into various type of Banach or quasi-Banach spaces. In particular, for $0 <r < p<2$ with $r \le 1$, we construct a family of operators that embed $\ell_p^n$ into $\ell_r^{(1+η)n}$, with optimal polynomial bounds in $η>0$.
Embeddability of $\ell_p$-spaces into mixed-norm Lebesgue spaces in connection with the validity of vector-valued extensions of the Riesz--Fischer Theorem
We study nuclear embeddings for spaces of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin type defined on quasi-bounded domains $Ω\subset {\mathbb R}^d$. The counterpart for such function spaces defined on bounded domains has been considered for a long time and the complete answer was obtained only recently. Compact embeddings for function spaces defined on quasi-bounded domains have been studied in detail already, also concerning their entropy and $s$-numbers. We now prove the first and complete nuclearity result in this context. The concept of nuclearity has been introduce by Grothendieck in 1955 already. Our se…
We give a simple example of a countable metric space $M$ that does not embed bi-Lipschitz with distortion strictly less than 2 into any Asplund space. Actually, if $M$ embeds with distortion strictly less than 2 to a Banach space $X$, then $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$. We also show that the space $M$ does not embed with distortion strictly less than $2$ into $\ell_1$ itself but it does embed isometrically into a space that is isomorphic to $\ell_1$.
We study the embedding $\text{id}: \ell_p^b(\ell_q^d) \to \ell_r^b(\ell_u^d)$ and prove matching bounds for the entropy numbers $e_k(\text{id})$ provided that $0<p<r\leq \infty$ and $0<q\leq u\leq \infty$. Based on this finding, we establish optimal dimension-free asymptotic rates for the entropy numbers of embeddings of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces of small dominating mixed smoothness which settles an open question in the literature. Both results rely on a novel covering construction recently found by Edmunds and Netrusov.
In this paper we first show that if $X$ is a Banach space and $α$ is a left invariant crossnorm on $\ell_\infty\otimes X$, then there is a Banach lattice $L$ and an isometric embedding $J$ of $X$ into $L$, so that $I\otimes J$ becomes an isometry of $\ell_\infty\otimes_αX$ onto $\ell_\infty\otimes_m J(X)$. Here $I$ denotes the identity operator on $\ell_\infty$ and $\ell_\infty\otimes_m J(X)$ the canonical lattice tensor product. This result is originally due to G. Pisier (unpublished), but our proof is different. We then use this to characterize the Gordon-Lewis property $\GL$ in terms of emb…
We show that, for a separable and complete metric space $M$, the Lipschitz-free space $\mathcal F(M)$ embeds linearly and almost-isometrically into $\ell_1$ if and only if $M$ is a subset of an $\mathbb R$-tree with length measure 0. Moreover, it embeds isometrically if and only if the length measure of the closure of the set of branching points of $M$ (taken in any minimal $\mathbb R$-tree that contains $M$) is negligible. We also prove that, for any subset $M$ of an $\mathbb R$-tree, every extreme point of the unit ball of $\mathcal F(M)$ is an element of the form $(δ(x)-δ(y))/d(x,y)$ for $x…
Given $0<p,q, r<\infty $ and $ q<r\le \infty$ we consider the natural embedding $\ell_{p,q}\hookrightarrow \ell_{p,r}$ between Lorenz sequence spaces. We prove that this non-compact embedding is always strictly singular but not finitely strictly singular.
The equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture was firstly introduced by Roe [29] as a unified way to approach both the Baum-Connes conjecture and its coarse counterpart. In this paper, we prove that if an a-T-menable group $Γ$ acts properly and isometrically on a bounded geometry metric space $X$ with controlled distortion such that the quotient space $X/Γ$ is coarsely embeddable, then the equivariant coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for this action. This answers a question posed in [8] affirmatively.
Our goal in this paper is to continue the study initiated by the authors in [Lipschitz free $p$-spaces for $0<p<1$; arXiv:1811.01265 [math.FA]] of the geometry of the Lipschitz free $p$-spaces over quasimetric spaces for $0<p\le1$, denoted $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$. Here we develop new techniques to show that, by analogy with the case $p=1$, the space $\ell_{p}$ embeds isomorphically in $\mathcal F_{p}(\mathcal M)$ for $0<p<1$. Going further we see that despite the fact that, unlike the case $p=1$, this embedding need not be complemented in general, complementability of $\ell_{p}$ in a Lips…
We introduce the notion of cotype of a metric space, and prove that for Banach spaces it coincides with the classical notion of Rademacher cotype. This yields a concrete version of Ribe's theorem, settling a long standing open problem in the nonlinear theory of Banach spaces. We apply our results to several problems in metric geometry. Namely, we use metric cotype in the study of uniform and coarse embeddings, settling in particular the problem of classifying when L_p coarsely or uniformly embeds into L_q. We also prove a nonlinear analog of the Maurey-Pisier theorem, and use it to answer a qu…
We study finite subsets of $\ell_p$ and show that, up to nowhere dense and Haar null complement, all of them embed isometrically into any Banach space that uniformly contains the spaces $\ell_p^n$, $n \in \mathbb{N}$.
We prove that, for $1 \le p<q<\infty$, the partially ordered set $P(ω)/{\rm Fin}$ can be embedded into Borel equivalence relations between $\mathbb{R}^ω/\ell_p$ and $\mathbb{R}^ω/\ell_q$. Since there is an antichain of size continuum in $P(ω)/{\rm Fin}$, therefore there are continuum many incomparable Borel equivalence relations between $\mathbb{R}^ω/\ell_p$ and $\mathbb{R}^ω/\ell_q$.
We work on $\ell_p$ uniform Roe algebras associated to metric spaces, and on their mutual embedding. We generalize results of I. Farah and the authors to mutual embeddings of uniform Roe algebras of operators on $\ell_p$ spaces. Simultaneously, we obtain rigidity results for the classic uniform Roe $\mathrm{C}^*$-algebras which depend only on their Banach algebra structure.
We study finite subsets of $\ell_2$, and more generally any metric space, and consider whether these isometrically embed into a Banach space. Our results partially answer a question of Ostrovskii, on whether every infinite-dimensional Banach space contains every finite subset of $\ell_2$ isometrically. The updated version contains acknowledgement that Theorem 3.1 has been proven previously in a paper of Shkarin.
It is known that if finite subsets of a locally finite metric space $M$ admit $C$-bilipschitz embeddings into $\ell_p$ $(1\le p\le \infty)$, then for every $ε>0$, the space $M$ admits a $(C+ε)$-bilipschitz embedding into $\ell_p$. The goal of this paper is to show that for $p\ne 2,\infty$ this result is sharp in the sense that $ε$ cannot be dropped out of its statement.
In this paper fundamental nonlinear geometries of Lebesgue sequence spaces are studied in their quantitative aspects. Applications of this work are a positive solution to the strong embeddability problem from $\ell_q$ into $\ell_p$ ($0<p<q\le 1$) and new insights on the coarse embedabbility problem from $L_q$ into $\ell_q$, $q>2$. Relevant to geometric group theory purposes, the exact $\ell_p$-compressions of $\ell_2$ are computed. Finally coarse deformation of metric spaces with property A and locally compact amenable groups is investigated.
We study the classical spaces $L_{p}$ and $\ell_{p}$ for the whole range $0<p<\infty$ from a metric viewpoint and give a complete Lipschitz embeddability roadmap between any two of those spaces when equipped with both their ad-hoc distances and their snowflakings. Through connections with weaker forms of embeddings that lead to basic (yet fundamental) open problems, we also set the challenging goal of understanding the dissimilarities between the well-known subspace structure and the different nonlinear geometries that coexist inside $L_{p}$ and $\ell_{p}$.
The nonlinear geometry of operator spaces has recently started to be investigated. Many notions of nonlinear embeddability have been introduced so far, but, as noticed before by other authors, it was not clear whether they could be considered ``correct notions''. The main goal of these notes is to provide the missing evidence to support that \emph{almost complete coarse embeddability} is ``a correct notion''. This is done by proving results about the complete isomorphic theory of $\ell_1$-sums of certain operators spaces. Several results on the complete isomorphic theory of $c_0$-sums of opera…
In this paper we prove that $L_{p}$ does not admit an equivariant coarse embedding into $\ell_p$ i.e there is no proper, affine, isometric action of $L_{p}$, viewed as a group under addition with the standard metric $|| . ||_p$, on $\ell_p$. This is done by showing that representations of $L_{p}$ into $ Isom(\ell_p)$ has to be trivial, which allows us to reduce the question to bi-Lipschitz setting.
