We investigate how coarse embeddability of box spaces into Hilbert space behaves under group extensions. In particular, we prove a result which implies that a semidirect product of a finitely generated free group by a finitely generated residually finite amenable group has a box space which coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This provides a new class of examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have property A, generalising the example of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula.
We construct a finitely generated group which is an extension of two finitely generated groups coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space but which itself does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space. Our construction also provides a new infinite monster group: the first example of a finitely generated group that does not coarsely embed into Hilbert space and yet does not contain a weakly embedded expander.
We generalize the construction of Arzhantseva, Guentner and Spakula of a box space of the free group which admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space. We show that for a finitely generated free group, the box space corresponding to the derived $m$-series (for any integer $m\geq 2$) coarsely embeds into Hilbert space. This gives new examples of metric spaces with bounded geometry which coarsely embed into Hilbert space but do not have Yu's property A.
We construct box spaces of a free group that do not coarsely embed into a Hilbert space, but do not contain coarsely embedded expanders. We do this by considering two sequences of subgroups of the free group: one which gives rise to a box space which forms an expander, and another which gives rise to a box space that can be coarsely embedded into a Hilbert space. We then take certain intersections of these subgroups, and prove that the corresponding box space contains generalized expanders. We show that there are no coarsely embedded expanders in the box space corresponding to our chosen seque…
Given two finitely generated groups that coarsely embed into a Hilbert space, it is known that their wreath product also embeds coarsely into a Hilbert space. We introduce a wreath product construction for general metric spaces X,Y,Z and derive a condition, called the (delta-polynomial) path lifting property, such that coarse embeddability of X,Y and Z implies coarse embeddability of X\wr_Z Y. We also give bounds on the compression of X\wr_Z Y in terms of delta and the compressions of X,Y and Z. Next, we investigate the stability of the property of admitting a box space which coarsely embeds i…
We introduce a notion of fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space for metric spaces, which is a generalization of Gromov's notion of coarse embedding into Hilbert space. It turns out that a large class of expander graphs admit such an embedding. We show that the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space.
We use a coarse version of the fundamental group first introduced by Barcelo, Kramer, Laubenbacher and Weaver to show that box spaces of finitely presented groups detect the normal subgroups used to construct the box space, up to isomorphism. As a consequence we have that two finitely presented groups admit coarsely equivalent box spaces if and only if they are commensurable via normal subgroups. We also provide an example of two filtrations $(N_i)$ and $(M_i)$ of a free group $F$ such that $M_i>N_i$ for all $i$ with $[M_i:N_i]$ uniformly bounded, but with $\Box_{(N_i)}F$ not coarsely equivale…
We construct the first example of a coarsely non-amenable (= without Guoliang Yu's property A) metric space with bounded geometry which coarsely embeds into a Hilbert space.
In this paper we investigate full box spaces and coarse equivalences between them. We do this in two parts. In part one we compare the full box spaces of free groups on different numbers of generators. In particular the full box space of a free group $F_k$ is not coarsely equivalent to the full box space of a free group $F_d$, if $d\ge 8k+10$. In part two we compare $\Box_f\mathbb{Z}^n$ to the full box spaces of $2$-generated groups. In particular we prove that the full box space of $\mathbb{Z}^n$ is not coarsely equivalent to the full box space of any $2$-generated group, if $n\ge 3$.
If $H$ is a lattice in a locally compact second countable group $G$, then we show that $G$ has property A (respectively is coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space) if and only if $H$ has property A (respectively is coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space). Moreover, we show three interesting generalizations of this result. If $H$ is a closed subgroup of $G$ that is co-amenable in $G$, and if $H$ has property A (respectively, is coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space), then we show that $G$ has property A (respectively, is coarsely embeddable into Hilbert space). We also show that an extension of…
We show the necessary part of the following theorem : a finitely generated, residually finite group has property $PL^p$ (i.e. it admits a proper isometric affine action on some $L^p$ space) if, and only if, one (or equivalently, all) of its box spaces admits a fibred coarse embedding into some $L^p$ space. We also prove that coarse embeddability of a box space of a group into a $L^p$ space implies property $PL^p$ for this group.
We introduce a notion of coarse embedding at infinity into Hilbert space for metric spaces, which is a weakening of the notion of fibred coarse embedding and a far generalization of Gromov's concept of coarse embedding. It turns out that a residually finite group admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space if and only if one (or equivalently, every) box space of the group admits a coarse embedding at infinity into Hilbert space. Moreover, we introduce a concept of generalized expander at infinity and show that it is an obstruction to coarse embeddability at infinity.
We give a contractive Schur multiplier characterization of locally compact groups coarsely embeddable into Hilbert spaces. Consequently, all locally compact groups whose weak Haagerup constant is 1 embed coarsely into Hilbert spaces, and hence the Baum-Connes assembly map with coefficients is split-injective for such groups.
The open question of what prevents a metric space with bounded geometry from being uniformly embeddable in Hilbert space is answered here for box spaces of residually finite groups. We prove that a box space does not contain a uniformly embedded expander sequence if and only if it uniformly embeds in Hilbert space. In particular, this gives a sufficient condition for a residually finite group to have the Haagerup property. The main result holds in the more general setting of a disjoint union of Cayley graphs of finite groups with bounded degree.
We consider box spaces of finitely generated, residually finite groups $G$, and try to distinguish them up to coarse equivalence. We show that, for $n\geq 2$, the group $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ has a continuum of box spaces which are pairwise non-coarsely equivalent expanders. Moreover, varying the integer $n\geq 3$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_n(\mathbb{Z})$ are pairwise inequivalent; similarly, varying the prime $p$, expanders given as box spaces of $SL_2(\mathbb{Z}[\sqrt{p}])$ are pairwise inequivalent. A strong form of non-expansion for a box space is the existence of $α\in]0,1]$ such t…
The notions of a box family and fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding are introduced. The countable, residually amenable groups satisfying the Haagerup property are then characterized as those possessing a box family that admits a fibred cofinitely-coarse embedding into a Hilbert space. This is a generalization of a result of X. Chen, Q. Wang and X. Wang on residually finite groups.
From any two median spaces $X,Y$, we construct a new median space $X \circledast Y$, referred to as the diadem product of $X$ and $Y$, and we show that this construction is compatible with wreath products in the following sense: given two finitely generated groups $G,H$ and two (equivariant) coarse embeddings into median spaces $X,Y$, there exist a(n equivariant) coarse embedding $G\wr H \to X \circledast Y$. As an application, we prove that $$α_1(G \wr H) \geq \min(α_1(G),α_1(H))/2 \text{ for all finitely generated groups $G,H$,}$$ where $α_1(\cdot)$ denotes the $\ell^1$-compression. As an ot…
We undertake a systematic study of the approximation properties of the topological and measurable versions of the coarse boundary groupoid associated to a sequence of finite graphs of bounded degree. On the topological side, we prove that asymptotic coarse embeddability of the graph sequence into a Hilbert space is equivalent to the coarse boundary groupoid being topologically a-T-menable, thus answering a question by Rufus Willett. On the measure-theoretic side, we prove that measure-theoretic amenability resp. a-T-menability of the coarse boundary groupoid are related to hyperfiniteness and …
The connection between the coarse geometry of metric spaces and analytic properties of topological groupoids is well known. One of the main results of Skandalis, Tu and Yu is that a space admits a coarse embedding into Hilbert space if and only if a certain associated topological groupoid is a-T-menable. This groupoid characterisation then reduces the proof that the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for a coarsely embeddable space to known results for a-T-menable groupoids. The property of admitting a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space was introduced by Chen, Wang and Yu to provide a…
We construct metric spaces that do not have property A yet are coarsely embeddable into the Hilbert space. Our examples are so called warped cones, which were introduced by J. Roe to serve as examples of spaces non-embeddable into a Hilbert space and with or without property A. The construction provides the first examples of warped cones combining coarse embeddability and lack of property A. We also construct warped cones over manifolds with isometrically embedded expanders and generalise Roe's criteria for the lack of property A or coarse embeddability of a warped cone. Along the way, it is p…
We show that if $G$ and $H$ are finitely generated groups whose Hilbert compression exponent is positive, then so is the Hilbert compression exponent of the wreath $G \wr H$. We also prove an analogous result for coarse embeddings of wreath products. In the special case $G=\Z$, $H=\Z \wr \Z$ our result implies that the Hilbert compression exponent of $\Z\wr (\Z\wr\Z)$ is at least 1/4, answering a question posed as to whether it has positive Hilbert compression exponent.
In this paper we compute the discrete fundamental groups of warped cones. As an immediate consequence, this allows us to show that there exist coarsely simply-connected expanders and superexpanders. This also provides a strong coarse invariant of warped cones and implies that many warped cones cannot be coarsely equivalent to any box space.
The main result of this article is a rigidity result pertaining to the spreading model structure for Banach spaces coarsely embeddable into Tsirelson's original space $T^*$. Every Banach space that is coarsely embeddable into $T^*$ must be reflexive and all its spreading models must be isomorphic to $c_0$. Several important consequences follow from our rigidity result. We obtain a coarse version of an influential theorem of Tsirelson: $T^*$ does not coarsely contain $c_0$ nor $\ell_p$ for $p\in[1,\infty)$. We show that there is no infinite dimensional Banach space that coarsely embeds into eve…
We investigate fixed point properties for isometric actions of topological groups on a wide class of metric spaces, with a particular emphasis on Hilbert spaces. Instead of requiring the action to be continuous, we assume that it is ``controlled", i.e. compatible with respect to some natural left-invariant coarse structure. For locally compact groups, we prove that these coarse fixed point properties are equivalent to the usual ones, defined for continuous actions. We deduce generalisations of two results of Gromov originally stated for discrete groups. For Polish groups with bounded geometry …
The objective of this series is to study metric geometric properties of disjoint unions of amenable Cayley graphs by group properties of the Cayley accumulation points in the space of marked groups. In this Part II, we prove that a disjoint union admits a fibred coarse embedding into a Hilbert space (in a generalized sense) if and only if the Cayley boundary of the sequence in the space of marked groups is uniformly a-T-menable. We furthermore extend this result to ones with other target spaces. By combining our main results with constructions of Arzhantseva--Osajda and Osajda, we construct tw…
We construct small cancellation labellings for some infinite sequences of finite graphs of bounded degree. We use them to define infinite graphical small cancellation presentations of groups. This technique allows us to provide examples of groups with exotic properties: - We construct the first examples of finitely generated coarsely non-amenable groups (that is, groups without Guoliang Yu's Property A) that are coarsely embeddable into a Hilbert space. Moreover, our groups act properly on CAT(0) cubical complexes. - We construct the first examples of finitely generated groups, with expanders …
We describe a construction (the `warped cone construction') which produces examples of coarse spaces with large groups of translations. We show that by this construction we can obtain many examples of coarse spaces which do not have property A or which are not uniformly embeddable into Hilbert space.
