Following N. Elkies ("ABC implies Mordell") we show that the abc conjecture of Masser-Oesterle implies an effective version of Siegel's theorem about integral points on algebraic curves, i.e. an upper bound for the S-integral points where the dependence on S is explicit. The converse statement is also announced in this note. For both results, the main geometric tool is a theorem of G.V. Belyi.
The ABC conjecture of Masser and Oesterle' states that if (a,b,c) are coprime integers with a + b + c = 0, then sup(|a|,|b|,|c|) < c_e (rad(abc))^{1+e} for any e > 0. Oesterle' has observed that if the ABC conjecture holds for all (a,b,c) with 16 | abc, then the full ABC conjecture holds. We extend that result to show that, for every integer N, the "congruence ABC conjecture" that ABC holds for all (a,b,c) with N|abc implies the full ABC conjecture.
Ellenberg proved that the abc conjecture would follow if this conjecture were known for sums $a+b=c$ such that $D\mid abc$ for some integer~$D$. Mochizuki proved a theorem with an opposite restriction, that the full abc conjecture would follow if it were known for abc sums that are not highly divisible. We prove both theorems for general number fields.
The conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé, popularly known as $abc$-conjecture have many consequences. We use an explicit version due to Baker to solve a number of conjectures.
The theta-block conjecture proposed by Gritsenko--Poor--Yuen in 2013 characterizes Siegel paramodular forms which are simultaneously Borcherds products and additive Jacobi lifts. In this paper, we prove this conjecture for two new infinite series of theta blocks of weights 2 and 3. The proof is based on Scheithauer's classification of reflective modular forms of singular weight.
We prove that the $abc$-Conjecture implies upper bounds on Zsigmondy sets that are uniform over families of unicritical polynomials over number fields. As an application, we use the $abc$-Conjecture to prove that there exist uniform bounds on the index of the associated arboreal Galois representations.
The abc conjecture is one of the most famous unsolved problems in number theory. The conjecture claims for each real $ε> 0$ that there are only a finite number of coprime positive integer solutions to the equation $a+b = c$ with $c > (rad(a b c))^{1+ε}$. If true, the abc conjecture would imply many other famous theorems and conjectures as corollaries. In this paper, we discuss the abc conjecture and find new applications to powerful numbers, which are integers $n$ for which $p^2 | n$ for every prime $p$ such that $p | n$. We answer several questions from an earlier paper on this topic, assumin…
This note imparts heuristic arguments and theorectical evidences that contradict the abc conjecture over the rational numbers. In addition, the rudimentary datails for transforming this problem into the doimain of equidistribution theory are provided.
We formulate an explicit refinement of Böcherer's conjecture for Siegel modular forms of degree 2 and squarefree level, relating weighted averages of Fourier coefficients with special values of L-functions. To achieve this, we compute the relevant local integrals that appear in the refined global Gan-Gross-Prasad conjecture for Bessel periods as proposed by Yifeng Liu. We note several consequences of our conjecture to arithmetic and analytic properties of L-functions and Fourier coefficients of Siegel modular forms.
In this paper, we define $X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich prime which is a generalized Wieferich prime where $X$ is a finite set of algebraic numbers. We are going to show that there are infinitely many non-$X$-base Fibonacci-Wieferich primes assuming the $abc$-conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé-Szpiro for number fields. We also provide a new conjecture concerning the rank of free part of abelian group generated by all elements in $X$, and we will use the arithmetic point of view and geometric point of view to give heuristic.
This note formulates a conjecture generalizing both the abc conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé and the author's diophantine conjecture for algebraic points of bounded degree. It also shows that the new conjecture is implied by the earlier conjecture. As with most of the author's conjectures, this new conjecture stems from analogies with Nevanlinna theory; in this case it corresponds to a Second Main Theorem in Nevanlinna theory with truncated counting functions. The original abc conjecture of Masser and Oesterlé corresponds to the Second Main Theorem with truncated counting functions on P^1 for the…
We prove the following uniformity principle: if one of the Galois representations in the family attached to a genus two Siegel cusp form of weight $k>3$, "semistable" and with multiplicity one, is reducible (for an odd prime $p$),then all the representations in the family are reducible. This, combined with Serre's conjecture (which is now a theorem) gives a proof of the Endoscopy Conjecture.
Consider an elliptic curve, defined over the rational numbers, and embedded in projective space. The rational points on the curve are viewed as integer vectors with coprime coordinates. What can be said about a rational point if a bound is placed upon the number of prime factors dividing a fixed coordinate? If the bound is zero, then Siegel's Theorem guarantees that there are only finitely many such points. We consider, theoretically and computationally, two conjectures: one is a generalization of Siegel's Theorem and the other is a refinement which resonates with Hall's conjecture.
We state and verify up to weight 172 a conjecture on the existence of a certain generating set for spaces of classical Siegel modular forms. This conjecture is particularly useful for calculations involving Fourier expansions. Using this generating set we verify the Boecherer conjec- ture for non-rational eigenforms. As one further application we verify another conjectures for weights up to 150 and investigate an analogue of the Victor-Miller basis. Additionally, we describe some arithmetic properties of the basis we found.
We show that the $abc$ conjecture of Masser-Oesterlé-Szpiro for number fields implies that there are infinitely many non-Fibonacci-Wieferich primes. We also provide a new heuristic for the number of such primes beneath a certain value.
An extended generating series of the radical of n, involving two variables, leads to an identity in said variables, which proves Bombieri's abc-Conjecture for certain sets of integers.
Enrico Bombieri proved that the ABC Conjecture implies Roth's theorem in 1994. This paper concerns the other direction. In making use of Bombieri's and Van der Poorten's explicit formula for the coefficients of the regular continued fractions of algebraic numbers, we prove that Roth's theorem implies a weakened non-effective version of the ABC Conjecture in certain cases relating to roots.
We study the distribution of prime numbers under the unlikely assumption that Siegel zeros exist. In particular we prove for \[ \sum_{n \leq X} Λ(n) Λ(\pm n+h) \] an asymptotic formula which holds uniformly for $h = O(X)$. Such an asymptotic formula has been previously obtained only for fixed $h$ in which case our result quantitatively improves those of Heath-Brown (1983) and Tao and Teräväinen (2021). Since our main theorems work also for large $h$ we can derive new results concerning connections between Siegel zeros and the Goldbach conjecture and between Siegel zeros and primes in almost al…
In this short note we show that the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields puts strong restrictions on the coordinates of rational points on elliptic curves. For the proof we use a variant of the uniform abc-conjecture over number fields formulated by Mochizuki. As an application, we generalize a result of Silverman on elliptic non-Wieferich primes.
It is known that in the case of hyperelliptic curves the Shafarevich conjecture can be made effective, i.e., for any number field k and any finite set of places S of k, one can effectively compute the set of isomorphism classes of hyperelliptic curves over k with good reduction outside S. We show here that an extension of this result to an effective Shafarevich conjecture for Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves of genus g would imply an effective version of Siegel's theorem for integral points on hyperelliptic curves of genus g.
This note outlines a constructive proof of a proposition in Mochizuki's paper "Arithmetic elliptic curves in general position," making a direct use of computable non-critical Belyi maps to effectively reduce the full $abc$-conjecture to a restricted form. Such a reduction means that an effective $abc$-theorem is implied by Theorem 1.10 of Mochizuki's final IUT paper ("Inter-universal Teichmuller theory IV: log-volume computations and set-theoretic foundations").
We give two applications of Arthur's multiplicity formula to Siegel modular forms. The one is a lifting theorem for vector valued Siegel modular forms, which contains Miyawaki's conjectures and Ibukiyama's conjectures. The other is the strong multiplicity one theorem for Siegel modular forms of scalar weights and level one.
In this short note we confirm the relation between the generalized $abc$-conjecture and the $p$-rationality of number fields. Namely, we prove that given K$/\mathbb{Q}$ a real quadratic extension or an imaginary $S_3$-extension, if the generalized $abc$-conjecture holds in K, then there exist at least $c\,\log X$ prime numbers $p \leq X$ for which K is $p$-rational, here $c$ is some nonzero constant depending on K. The real quadratic case was recently suggested by Böckle-Guiraud-Kalyanswamy-Khare.
Let $K/\mathbb{Q}$ be an algebraic number field of class number one and $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. We show that there are infinitely many non-Wieferich primes with respect to certain units in $\mathcal{O}_K$ under the assumption of the \textit{abc} conjecture for number fields.
As a natural generalization of the Euler-Mascheroni constant $γ$, Y. Ihara introduced the Euler-Kronecker constant $γ_K$ attached to any number field $K$. In this paper, we prove that a certain bound on $γ_K$ in a tower of number fields $\mathcal{K}$ implies the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for $\mathcal{K}$ as formulated by Tsfasman and Vlǎduţ. Moreover, we use known bounds on $γ_K$ for cyclotomic fields to obtain a finer estimate for the number of zeros of the Dedekind zeta-function $ζ_K(s)$ in the critical strip.
We prove the lower bound for the number of Lucas non-Wieferich primes in arithmetic progressions. More precisely, for any given integer $k\geq 2$ there are $\gg \log x$ Lucas non-Wieferich primes $p\leq x$ such that $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{k}$, assuming the $abc$ conjecture for number fields. Further, we discuss some applications of Lucas sequences in Cryptography.
In 2002, M. A. Tsfasman and S. G. Vlăduţ formulated the generalized Brauer-Siegel conjecture for asymptotically exact families of number fields. In this article, we establish this conjecture for asymptotically good towers and asymptotically bad families of number fields with solvable normal closure.
Assuming that Siegel zeros exist, we prove a hybrid version of the Chowla and Hardy--Littlewood prime tuples conjectures. Thus, for an infinite sequence of natural numbers $x$, and any distinct integers $h_1,\dots,h_k,h'_1,\dots,h'_\ell$, we establish an asymptotic formula for $$\sum_{n\leq x}Λ(n+h_1)\cdots Λ(n+h_k)λ(n+h_{1}')\cdots λ(n+h_{\ell}')$$ for any $0\leq k\leq 2$ and $\ell \geq 0$. Specializing to either $\ell=0$ or $k=0$, we deduce the previously known results on the Hardy--Littlewood (or twin primes) conjecture and the Chowla conjecture under the existence of Siegel zeros, due to H…
We prove that for any positive integer c there are at least N(c), $1\leq N(c) < ϕ(c)/2$ representations of c as a sum of two positive integers a, b, with no common divisor, such that the N(c) radicals R(abc) are all greater than kc, where k an absolute constant.
We prove that for a positive integer $c$ and any given $\varepsilon$, $0<\varepsilon<1$, the number $N(c)$ of equations $c=a+b$, $a<b$, with positive coprime integers $a$ and $b$, which satisfy the inequality $$c < R(c)^{\frac{\varepsilon}{1+\varepsilon}}R(a)^{\frac{1}{1+\varepsilon}}R(b)^{\frac{1}{1+\varepsilon}},$$ where R(n) is the radical of $n$, is for $c\to\infty$ $$N(c)=(1-\varepsilon)\frac{ϕ(c)}{2}+O\Bigl(\frac{ϕ(c)}{2}\Bigr).$$ An analogue for the abc-conjecture inequality $c<R(abc)^{1+\varepsilon}$ (without a constant factor) will also be proved.
Assuming the abc conjecture with $ε=1/6$, we use elementary methods to show that only finitely many $s$-Cullen numbers are repunits, aside from two known infinite families. More precisely, only finitely many positive integers $s$, $n$, $b$, and $q$ with $s,b \geq 2$ and $n,q \geq 3$ satisfy \[C_{s,n} = ns^n + 1 = \frac{b^q -1}{b-1}.\]
We consider a variant of the ABC Conjecture, attempting to count the number of solutions to $A+B+C=0$, in relatively prime integers $A,B,C$ each of absolute value less than $N$ with $r(A)<|A|^a, r(B)<|B|^b, r(C)<|C|^c.$ The ABC Conjecture is equivalent to the statement that for $a+b+c<1$, the number of solutions is bounded independently of $N$. If $a+b+c \geq 1$, it is conjectured that the number of solutions is asymptotically $N^{a+b+c-1 \pm ε}.$ We prove this conjecture as long as $a+b+c \geq 2.$
Under a weakened version of Hardy-Littlewood Conjecture on the number of representations in Goldbach problem, J. H. Fei proved bounds for the Siegel zeros. Recently G. Bhowmik and K. Halupczok generalized Fei's result under a weaker conjecture. In the first version of this paper on arXiv, we pointed out a defect in the paper of G. Bhowmik and K.Halupczok, and assumed a new conjecture and used new discussion to overcome this defect to recover their result. Afterwards, in the second version of their paper, G. Bhowmik and K. Halupczok assumed previous conjecture and used our new discussion to get…
Let $k > 3$ be an integer and $p$ a prime with $p > 2k-2$. Let $f$ be a newform of weight $2k-2$ and level 1 so that $f$ is ordinary at $p$ and $\barρ_{f}$ is irreducible. Under some additional hypotheses we prove that $ord_{p}(L_{alg}(k,f)) \leq ord_{p}(# S)$ where $S$ is the Pontryagin dual of the Selmer group associated to $ρ_{f} \otimes ε^{1-k}$ with $ε$ the $p$-adic cyclotomic character. We accomplish this by first constructing a congruence between the Saito-Kurokawa lift of $f$ and a non-CAP Siegel cusp form. Once this congruence is established, we use Galois representations to obtain th…
The abc conjecture, one of the most famous open problems in number theory, claims that three positive integers satisfying a+b=c cannot simultaneously have significant repetition among their prime factors; in particular, the product of the distinct primes dividing the three integers should never be much less than c. Triples of numbers satisfying a+b=c are called abc triples if the product of their distinct prime divisors is strictly less than c. We catalog what is known about abc triples, both numerical examples found through computation and infinite familes of examples established theoreticall…
We prove that for any positive integer c and any s > 0 there are representations of c as a sum a+b of two coprime positive integers a, b, such that the respective radicals are all greater than K(s)R(c)^(1-s)c^2. For the reprasentations in question, this is a stronger result than the abc-conjecture, which postulates that these representations are greater than k(s)c^1/(1+s).
This paper studies integer solutions to the ABC equation A+B+C=0 in which none of A, B, C has a large prime factor. Set H(A,B, C)= max(|A|,|B|,|C|) and set the smoothness S(A, B, C) to be the largest prime factor of ABC. We consider primitive solutions (gcd(A, B, C)=1) having smoothness no larger than a fixed power p of log H. Assuming the abc Conjecture we show that there are finitely many solutions if p<1. We discuss a conditional result, showing that the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (GRH) implies there are infinitely many primitive solutions when p>8. We sketch some details of the proof o…
We address the Uniform Boundedness Conjecture of Morton and Silverman in the case of unicritical polynomials, assuming a generalization of the $abc$-conjecture. For unicritical polynomials of degree at least five, we require only the standard $abc$-conjecture.
We show that Vojta's conjecture for some rational surfaces is related to the $abc$ conjecture. More specifically, we prove that Vojta's conjecture on these surfaces implies a special case of the $abc$ conjecture, while the $abc$ conjecture implies Vojta's conjecture on these surfaces. Moreover, for similar but different rational surfaces, we prove Vojta's conjecture unconditionally. To prove these results, we use some (possibly new) properties of Farey sequences.
Assuming the existence of Siegel zeros, we prove that there exists an increasing sequence of positive integers for which Chowla's Conjecture on $k$-point correlations of the Liouville function holds. This extends work of Germán and Kátai, where they studied the case $k=2$ under identical hypotheses. An immediate corollary, which follows from a well-known argument due to Sarnak, is that Sarnak's Conjecture on Möbius disjointness holds. More precisely, assuming the existence of Siegel zeros, there exists a subsequence of the natural numbers for which the Liouville function is asymptotically orth…
We prove Ibukiyama's conjectures on Siegel modular forms of half-integral weight and of degree 2 by using Arthur's multiplicity formula on the split odd special orthogonal group $\SO_5$ and Gan-Ichino's multiplicity formula on the metaplectic group $\Mp_4$. In the proof, the representation theory of the Jacobi groups also plays an important role.
