We prove that for any positive integer c there are at least N(c), $1\leq N(c) < ϕ(c)/2$ representations of c as a sum of two positive integers a, b, with no common divisor, such that the N(c) radicals R(abc) are all greater than kc, where k an absolute constant.
We prove that for any positive integer c and any s > 0 there are representations of c as a sum a+b of two coprime positive integers a, b, such that the respective radicals are all greater than K(s)R(c)^(1-s)c^2. For the reprasentations in question, this is a stronger result than the abc-conjecture, which postulates that these representations are greater than k(s)c^1/(1+s).
We prove the lower bound for the number of Lucas non-Wieferich primes in arithmetic progressions. More precisely, for any given integer $k\geq 2$ there are $\gg \log x$ Lucas non-Wieferich primes $p\leq x$ such that $p\equiv\pm1\pmod{k}$, assuming the $abc$ conjecture for number fields. Further, we discuss some applications of Lucas sequences in Cryptography.
In this short note we confirm the relation between the generalized $abc$-conjecture and the $p$-rationality of number fields. Namely, we prove that given K$/\mathbb{Q}$ a real quadratic extension or an imaginary $S_3$-extension, if the generalized $abc$-conjecture holds in K, then there exist at least $c\,\log X$ prime numbers $p \leq X$ for which K is $p$-rational, here $c$ is some nonzero constant depending on K. The real quadratic case was recently suggested by Böckle-Guiraud-Kalyanswamy-Khare.
Let $a,b,c$ be distinct positive integers. Set $M=a+b+c$ and $N=abc$. We give an explicit description of the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic curve $\displaystyle E_{(M,N)}:y^2-Mxy-Ny=x^3$ over $\Q$. In particular we determine the torsion subgroup of $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ and show that its rank is positive. Furthermore there are infinitely many positive integers $M$ that can be written in $n$ different ways, $n\in\{2,3\}$, as the sum of three distinct positive integers with the same product $N$ and $E_{(M,N)}(\Q)$ has rank at least $n$.
We investigate the ``partition function'' integrals $\int_{-1/2}^{1/2} |ζ(1/2 + it + ih)|^2 dh$ for the critical exponent 2, and the local maxima $\max_{|h| \leq 1/2} |ζ(1/2 + it + ih)|$, as $T \leq t \leq 2T$ varies. In particular, we prove that for $(1+o(1))T$ values of $T \leq t \leq 2T$ we have $\max_{|h| \leq 1/2} \log|ζ(1/2+it+ih)| \leq \log\log T - (3/4 + o(1))\log\log\log T$, matching for the first time with both the leading and second order terms predicted by a conjecture of Fyodorov, Hiary and Keating. The proofs work by approximating the zeta function in mean square by the product o…
For integers $0 < r \leq t$, let the function $D_{r,t}(n)$ denote the number of parts among all partitions of $n$ into distinct parts that are congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. We prove the asymptotic formula $$D_{r,t}(n) \sim \dfrac{3^{\frac 14} e^{π\sqrt{\frac{n}{3}}}}{2πt n^{\frac 14}} \left( \log(2) + \left( \dfrac{\sqrt{3} \log(2)}{8π} - \dfracπ{4\sqrt{3}} \left( r - \dfrac{t}{2} \right) \right) n^{- \frac 12} \right)$$ as $n \to \infty$. A corollary of this result is that for $0 < r < s \leq t$, the inequality $D_{r,t}(n) \geq D_{s,t}(n)$ holds for all sufficiently large $n$. We make this eff…
Let $N(\leq m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with rank not greater than $m$, and let $M(\leq m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with crank not greater than $m$. Bringmann and Mahlburg observed that $N(\leq m,n)\leq M(\leq m,n)\leq N(\leq m+1,n)$ for $m<0$ and $1\leq n\leq 100$. They also pointed out that these inequalities can be restated as the existence of a re-ordering $τ_n$ on the set of partitions of $n$ such that $|\text{crank}(λ)|-|\text{rank}(τ_n(λ))|=0$ or $1$ for all partitions $λ$ of $n$, that is, the rank and the crank are nearly equal distributions over parti…
The main objective of this paper is to investigate the distribution of the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank of a partition. Let $M(m,n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with the Andrews-Garvan-Dyson crank $m$, we show that the sequence \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is unimodal for $n\geq 44$. It turns out that the unimodality of \break $\{M(m,n)\}_{|m|\leq n-1}$ is related to the monotonicity properties of two partition \break functions $p_k(n)$ and $pp_k(n)$. Let $p_k(n)$ denote the number of partitions of $n$ with at most $k$ parts such that the largest part appears at least twice and l…
Let $p(n)$ be the ordinary partition function. In the 1960s Atkin found a number of examples of congruences of the form $p( Q^3 \ell n+β)\equiv0\pmod\ell$ where $\ell$ and $Q$ are prime and $5\leq \ell\leq 31$; these lie in two natural families distinguished by the square class of $1-24β\pmod\ell$. In recent decades much work has been done to understand congruences of the form $p(Q^m\ell n+β)\equiv 0\pmod\ell$. It is now known that there are many such congruences when $m\geq 4$, that such congruences are scarce (if they exist at all) when $m=1, 2$, and that for $m=0$ such congruences exist onl…
The partition function $ p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ can be defined using the generating function, \[\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_{[1^c{\ell}^d]}(n)q^n=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\dfrac{1}{(1-q^n)^c(1-q^{\ell n})^d}.\] In \cite{P}, we proved infinite family of congruences for this partition function for $\ell=11$. In this paper, we extend the ideas that we have used in \cite{P} to prove infinite families of congruences for the partition function $p_{[1^c\ell^d]}(n)$ modulo powers of $\ell$ for any integers $c$ and $d$, for primes $5\leq \ell\leq 17$. This generalizes Atkin, Gordon and Hughes' congruences for powers …
In the present paper we initiate the study of a certain kind of partition inequality, by showing, for example, that if $M\geq 5$ is an integer and the integers $a$ and $b$ are relatively prime to $M$ and satisfy $1\leq a<b<M/2$, and the $c(m,n)$ are defined by \[ \frac{1}{(sq^a,sq^{M-a};q^M)_{\infty}}-\frac{1}{(sq^b,sq^{M-b};q^M)_{\infty}}:=\sum_{m,n\geq 0} c(m,n)s^m q^n, \] then $c(m, Mn)\geq 0$ for all integers $m\geq 0, n\geq 0$. %If, in addition, $M$ is even, then $c(m, Mn+M/2)\geq 0$ for all integers $m\geq 0, n\geq 0$. A similar result is proved for the integers $d(m,n)$ defined by \[ (-…
We prove various inequalities between the number of partitions with the bound on the largest part and some restrictions on occurrences of parts. We explore many interesting consequences of these partition inequalities. In particular, we show that for $L\geq 1$, the number of partitions with $l-s \leq L$ and $s=1$ is greater than the number of partitions with $l-s\leq L$ and $s>1$. Here $l$ and $s$ are the largest part and the smallest part of the partition, respectively.
For integers $k,t \geq 2$ and $1\leq r \leq t$ let $D_k(r,t;n)$ be the number of parts among all $k$-regular partitions (i.e., partitions of $n$ where all parts have multiplicity less than $k$) of $n$ that are congruent to $r$ modulo $t$. Using the circle method, we obtain the asymptotic \[ D_{k}(r,t;n) = \frac{3^{\frac{1}{4}}e^{π\sqrt{\frac{2Kn}{3}}}}{πt 2^{\frac{3}{4}}K^{\frac{1}{4}}n^{\frac{1}{4}}\sqrt{k}}\left(\log k + \left(\frac{3\sqrt{K}\log k}{8\sqrt{6}π} - \frac{tπ(k-1)K^{\frac{1}{2}}}{2\sqrt{6}}\left(\frac{r}{t}- \frac{1}{2}\right)\right)n^{-\frac{1}{2}} + O(n^{-1})\right), \] where …
Let $\ell \geq 5$ be prime. For the partition function $p(n)$ and $5 \leq \ell \leq 31$, Atkin found a number of examples of primes $Q \geq 5$ such that there exist congruences of the form $p(\ell Q^{3} n+β) \equiv 0 \pmod{\ell}.$ Recently, Ahlgren, Allen, and Tang proved that there are infinitely many such congruences for every $\ell$. In this paper, for a wide range of $c \in \mathbb{F}_{\ell}$, we prove congruences of the form $p(\ell Q^{3} n+β_{0}) \equiv c \cdot p(\ell Q n+β_{1}) \pmod{\ell}$ for infinitely many primes $Q$. For a positive integer $r$, let $p_{r}(n)$ be the $r$-colored par…
Andrews and Newman introduced the mex-function $\text{mex}_{A,a}(λ)$ for an integer partition $λ$ of a positive integer $n$ as the smallest positive integer congruent to $a$ modulo $A$ that is not a part of $λ$. They then defined $p_{A,a}(n)$ to be the number of partitions $λ$ of $n$ satisfying $\text{mex}_{A,a}(λ)\equiv a\pmod{2A}$. They found the generating function for $p_{t,t}(n)$ and $p_{2t,t}(n)$ for any positive integer $t$, and studied their arithmetic properties for some small values of $t$. In this article, we study the partition function $p_{mt,t}(n)$ for all positive integers $m$ a…
Clemm and Trebat-Leder (2014) proved that the number of quadratic number fields with absolute discriminant bounded by $x$ over which there exist elliptic curves with good reduction everywhere and rational $j$-invariant is $\gg x\log^{-1/2}(x)$. In this paper, we assume the $abc$-conjecture to show the sharp asymptotic $\sim cx\log^{-1/2}(x)$ for this number, obtaining formulae for $c$ in both the real and imaginary cases. Our method has three ingredients: (1) We make progress towards a conjecture of Granville: Given a fixed elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with short Weierstrass equation $y^2 = f…
Let $p_k(n)$ be given by the $k$-th power of the Euler Product $\prod _{n=1}^{\infty}(1-q^n)^k=\sum_{n=0}^{\infty}p_k(n)q^{n}$. By investigating the properties of the modular equations of the second and the third order under the Atkin $U$-operator, we determine the generating functions of $p_{8k}(2^{2α} n +\frac{k(2^{2α}-1)}{3})$ $(1\leq k\leq 3)$ and $p_{3k} (3^{2β}n+\frac{k(3^{2β}-1)}{8})$ $(1\leq k\leq 8)$ in terms of some linear recurring sequences. Combining with a result of Engstrom about the periodicity of linear recurring sequences modulo $m$, we obtain infinite families of congruences…
We prove asymptotic formulas for the complex coefficients of $(ζq;q)_\infty^{-1}$, where $ζ$ is a root of unity, and apply our results to determine secondary terms in the asymptotics for $p(a,b,n)$, the number of integer partitions of $n$ with largest part congruent $a$ modulo $b$. Our results imply that, as $n \to \infty$, the difference $p(a_1,b,n)-p(a_2,b,n)$ for $a_1 \neq a_2$ oscillates like a cosine, when renormalized by elementary functions. Moreover, we give asymptotic formulas for arbitrary linear combinations of $\{p(a,b,n)\}_{1 \leq a \leq b}$.
By introducing $k$-marked Durfee symbols, Andrews found a combinatorial interpretation of $2k$-th symmetrized moment $η_{2k}(n)$ of ranks of partitions of $n$ in terms of $(k+1)$-marked Durfee symbols of $n$. In this paper, we consider the $k$-th symmetrized positive moment $\barη_k(n)$ of ranks of partitions of $n$ which is defined as the truncated sum over positive ranks of partitions of $n$. As combintorial interpretations of $\barη_{2k}(n)$ and $\barη_{2k-1}(n)$, we show that for fixed $k$ and $i$ with $1\leq i\leq k+1$, $\barη_{2k-1}(n)$ equals the number of $(k+1)$-marked Durfee symbols …
Sums of the form $\sum_{q \leq N_1 < \cdots < N_m \leq n}{a_{(m);N_m}\cdots a_{(2);N_2}a_{(1);N_1}}$ date back to the sixteen century when Viète illustrated that the relation linking the roots and coefficients of a polynomial had this form. In more recent years, such sums have become increasingly used with a diversity of applications. In this paper, we develop formulae to help with manipulating such sums (which we will refer to as multiple sums). We develop variation formulae that express the variation of multiple sums in terms of lower order multiple sums. Additionally, we derive a set of par…
