Let p > 2 be a prime. Let Q(zeta) be the p-cyclotomic field. Let pi be the prime ideal of Q(zeta) lying over p. This article aims to describe some pi-adic congruences characterizing the structure of the p-class group and of the unit group of the field Q(zeta). For the unit group, this article supplements the 1954 and 1956 papers of Denes on this topic. A complete summarizing of the results obtained follows in the Introduction section of the paper (pages 3 to 6). This new version of the article with the same title, submitted with reference math.NT/0407430 25 Jul 2004: - corrects several typing errors in the introduction and in the paper, - simplifies some proofs of pi-adic congruences connected to p-class group, - removes the section dealing of the singular group foreseen in an independant paper.
We define and apply a method to study the non-vanishing of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values. We prove the non-vanishing of certain cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums, and, via a formula proved in another paper, which expresses a cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums as an infinite sum of products of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values, this implies the non-vanishing of certain $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values.
We show that the special values at tuples of positive integers of the $p$-adic multiple $L$-function introduced by the first-named author et al. can be expressed in terms of the cyclotomic multiple harmonic values introduced by the second-named author.
$p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values depend on the choice of a number of iterations of the crystalline Frobenius of the pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $\mathbb{P}^{1} - \{0,μ_{N},\infty\}$. In this paper we study how the iterated Frobenius depends on the number of iterations, in relation with the computation of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values in terms of cyclotomic multiple harmonic sums. This provides new results on that computation and the definition of a new pro-unipotent harmonic action.
For a newform for Gamma_0(N) of even weight k, we prove that its attached p-adic L-function is not identically zero on the group Z_p of the p-adic units. If p >3, we prove that the order of vanishing at any p-adic integer is finite.
When the branch character has root number -1, the corresponding anticyclotomic Katz p-adic L-function identically vanishes. In this case, we study the $μ$-invariant of the cyclotomic derivative of Katz p-adic L-function. As an application, this proves the non-vanishing of the anticyclotomic regulator of a self-dual CM modular form with the root number -1. The result also plays a crucial role in the recent work of Hsieh on the Eisenstein ideal approach to a one-sided divisibility of the CM main conjecture.
Let $X_{0}=\mathbb{P}^{1} - (\{0,\infty\} \cup μ_{N})\text{ }/\text{ }\mathbb{F}_{q}$, with $N \in \mathbb{N}^{\ast}$ and $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ of characteristic $p>0$ and containing a primitive $N$-th root of unity. We establish an explicit theory of the crystalline pro-unipotent fundamental groupoid of $X_{0}$. In part I, we have computed explicitly the Frobenius, and in particular cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values. In part II, we use part I to understand the algebraic relations of cyclotomic $p$-adic multiple zeta values via explicit formulas ; this is in particular a study of the harmoni…
This paper contributes to compute 2-adic complexity of two classes of Ding-Helleseth generalized cyclotomic sequences. Results show that 2-adic complexity of these sequences is good enough to resist the attack by the rational approximation algorithm.
The cyclotomic $p$-adic multi-zeta values are the $p$-adic periods of $π_{1}(\mathbb{G}_{m} \setminus μ_{M},\cdot),$ the unipotent fundamental group of the multiplicative group minus the $M$-th roots of unity. In this paper, we compute the cyclotomic $p$-adic multi-zeta values at all depths. This paper generalizes the results in [6] and [7]. Since the main result gives explicit formulas we expect it to be useful in proving non-vanishing and transcendence results for these $p$-adic periods and also, through the use of $p$-adic Hodge theory, in proving non-triviality results for the correspondin…
For primes p greater than 3, we propose a conjecture that relates the values of cup products in the Galois cohomology of the maximal unramified outside p extension of a cyclotomic field on cyclotomic p-units to the values of p-adic L-functions of cuspidal eigenforms that satisfy mod p congruences with Eisenstein series. Passing up the cyclotomic and Hida towers, we construct an isomorphism of certain spaces that allows us to compare the value of a reciprocity map on a particular norm compatible system of p-units to what is essentially the two-variable p-adic L-function of Mazur and Kitagawa.
Laurent Berger attached a p-adic differential equation N_rig(M) with a Frobenius structure to an arbitrary de Rham (phi, Gamma)-module over a Robba ring. In this article, we compare the local epsilon conjecture for the cyclotomic deformation of M with that of N_rig(M). We first define an isomorphism between the fundamental lines of their cyclotomic deformations using the second author's results on the big exponential map. As a main result of the article, we show that this isomorphism enables us to reduce the local epsilon conjecture for the cyclotomic deformation of M to that of N_rig(M).
In this paper we compute the values of the p-adic multiple polylogarithms of depth two at roots of unity. Our method is to solve the fundamental differential equation satisfied by the crystalline frobenius morphism using rigid analytic methods. The main result could be thought of as a computation in the p-adic theory of higher cyclotomy. We expect the result to be useful in proving non-vanishing results since it gives quite explicit formulas.
We give a new proof of Howard's $Λ$-adic Gross-Zagier formula, which we extend to the context of indefinite Shimura curves over $\mathbf{Q}$ attached to nonsplit quaternion algebras. This formula relates the cyclotomic derivative of a two-variable $p$-adic $L$-function restricted to the anticyclotomic line to the cyclotomic $p$-adic heights of Heegner points over the anticyclotomic tower, and our proof, rather than inspired by the original approaches of Gross-Zagier and Perrin-Riou, is via Iwasawa theory, based on the connection between Heegner points, Beilinson-Flach elements, and their expli…
Let p be an odd prime. Let F_p^* be the no-null part of the finite field of p elements. Let K = Q(zeta) be the p-cyclotomic field and let O_K be the ring of integers of K. Let pi be the prime ideal of K lying over p. An integer B \in O_K is said singular if B^{1/p} not \in K and if B O_K = b^p where b is an ideal of O_K. An integer B \in O_K is said semi-primary if B = beta mod pi^2 where the natural beta is coprime with p. Let sigma be a Q-isomorphism of the field K generating the Galois group Gal(K/Q). When p is irregular, there exists at least one subgroup Gamma of order p of the class grou…
We generalize the definition of overconvergent $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms and of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values and we prove a bound on their norm. A byproduct of the proof is a characterization of these objects in terms of certain regularized $p$-adic iterated integrals. The generalization of the definition consists in replacing the underlying Frobenius structure by its iterations. The bound on the norms of overconvergent $p$-adic multiple polylogarithms that we obtain is a prerequisite for our subsequent papers on $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values.
We use $\ell$-adic class field theory to take a new view on cyclotomic norms and Leopoldt or Gross generalized conjectures. By the way we recall and complete some classical results. We illustrate the logarithmic approach by various numerical examples and counter-examples obtained with PARI.
In this note, we investigate the p-adic behavior of Weil numbers in the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z\_p$-extension of $\mathbb Q(ζ\_p).$ We determlne the characteristic ideal of the quotient of semi-local units by Weil numbers in terms of the characteristic ideals of some classical modules that appear in Iwasawa Theory.
We unconditionally construct cyclotomic p-adic L-functions for Rankin-Selberg convolutions for GL(n+1) x GL(n) over arbitrary number fields, and show that they satisfy an expected functional equation.
In this paper, we study the deformations of Kolyvagin systems that are known to exist in a wide variety of cases, by the work of B. Howard, B. Mazur, and K. Rubin for the residual Galois representations, along the cyclotomic Iwasawa algebra. We prove, under certain technical hypotheses, that a cyclotomic deformation of a Kolyvagin system exists. We also briefly discuss how our techniques could be extended to prove that one could deform Kolyvagin systems for other deformations as well. We discuss several applications of this result, particularly relation of these $Λ$-adic Kolyvagin systems to p…
The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the geometry of the $p$-adic eigencurve at a point $f$ corresponding to a weight one cuspidal theta series irregular at the prime number $p$. We show that $f$ belongs to exactly three or four irreducible components and study their intersection multiplicities. In particular, we show that the congruence ideal of a CM component has a simple zero at $f$ if and only if a certain anti-cyclotomic $\mathscr{L}$-invariant $\mathscr{L}_-(φ)$ does not vanish. Further, using Roy's Strong Six Exponential Theorem we show that at least one amongst $\mathscr{L}…
We introduce adjoint cyclotomic multiple zeta values and cyclotomic multiple harmonic values. They are two variants of cyclotomic multiple zeta values, closely related to each other. They arise as key tools for the study of $p$-adic cyclotomic multiple zeta values. Moreover, cyclotomic multiple harmonic values provide an adelic lift to a cyclotomic generalization of finite multiple zeta values. We establish certain standard properties of these two objects. We consider two types of properties : some related to double shuffle relations, and some related to associator and Kashiwara-Vergne relatio…
In this paper we give a bound for the Iwasawa lambda invariant of an abelian number field attached to the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of that field. We also give some properties of Iwaswa power series attached to p-adic L-functions.
The construction of the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence for $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{Q}_p)$ uses in an essential way Fontaine's theory of cyclotomic $(φ,Γ)$-modules. Here \emph{cyclotomic} means that $Γ= \mathrm{Gal}(\mathbf{Q}_p(μ_{p^\infty})/\mathbf{Q}_p)$ is the Galois group of the cyclotomic extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$. In order to generalize the $p$-adic local Langlands correspondence to $\mathrm{GL}_2(L)$, where $L$ is a finite extension of $\mathbf{Q}_p$, it seems necessary to have at our disposal a theory of Lubin-Tate $(φ,Γ)$-modules. Such a generalization has been carried out t…
We deduce the cyclotomic Iwasawa main conjecture for Hilbert modular cuspforms with complex multiplication from the multivariable main conjecture for CM number fields. To this end, we study in detail the behaviour of the $p$-adic $L$-functions and the Selmer groups attached to CM number fields under specialisation procedures.
In this note we propose a new construction of cyclotomic p-adic L-functions attached to classical modular cuspidal eigenforms. This allows us to cover most known cases to date and provides a method which is amenable to generalizations to automorphic forms on arbitrary groups. In the classical setting of GL2 over Q this allows us to construct the p-adic L-function in the so far uncovered extremal case which arises under the unlikely hypothesis that p-th Hecke polynomial has a double root. Although Tate's conjecture implies that this case should never take place for GL2/Q, the obvious generaliza…
We prove that all elliptic curves defined over the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of a real quadratic field are modular under the assumption that the algebraic part of the central value of a twisted $L$-function is a $p$-adic unit. Our result is a generalization of a result of X. Zhang, which is a real quadratic analogue of a result of Thorne.
Let $E$ be a field of characteristic $p$. The group $\mathbf{Z}_p^\times$ acts on $E((X))$ by $a \cdot f(X) = f((1+X)^a-1)$. This action extends to the $X$-adic completion $\tilde{\mathbf{E}}$ of $\cup_{n \geq 0} E((X^{1/p^n}))$. We show how to recover $E((X))$ from the valued $E$-vector space $\tilde{\mathbf{E}}$ endowed with its action of $\mathbf{Z}_p^\times$. To do this, we introduce the notion of super-Hölder vector in certain $E$-linear representations of $\mathbf{Z}_p$. This is a characteristic $p$ analogue of the notion of locally analytic vector in $p$-adic Banach representations of $…
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. In this paper, we study the growth of the Sylow $p$-subgroups of the even $K$-groups of rings of integers in a $p$-adic Lie extension. Our results generalize previous results of Coates and Ji-Qin, where they considered the situation of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension. Our method of proof differs from these previous work. Their proof relies on an explicit description of certain Galois group via Kummer theory afforded by the context of a cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension, whereas our approach is via considering the Iwasawa cohomology groups with coefficien…
We give a new proof of the fact that the growth (with respect to $n$) of the $p$-adic valuation of $h_{n,2}^{-}$ is linear, where $h_{n,2}^{-}$ denotes the minus part of the $(S,\{2\})$-refined class number of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n+1}})$, as defined by Hu and Kim in [J. of Number Theory 158 (2016), 73-89]. As a consequence of our proof, we obtain an explicit relation between the $p$-adic valuation of $h_{n,2}^{-}$ and the $p$-adic valuation of $h_{n}^{-}$, the minus part of the class number $h_n$ of the cyclotomic field $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n+1}})$.
In this paper, we mainly give a general explicit form of Cassels' $p$-adic embedding theorem for number fields. We also give its refined form in the case of cyclotomic fields. As a byproduct, given an irreducible polynomial $f$ over $Z$, we give a general unconditional upper bound for the smallest prime number $p$ such that $f$ has a simple root modulo $p$.
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials. We formulate some basic properties of unitary cyclotomic polynomials and study how they are connected with cyclotomic, inclusion-exclusion and Kronecker polynomials. Further, we derive some related arithmetic function identities involving the unitary analog of the Dirichlet convolution.
We study the asymptotic behaviour of the Bloch-Kato-Shafarevich-Tate group of a modular form f over the cyclotomic Zp-extension of Q under the assumption that f is non-ordinary at p. In particular, we give upper bounds of these groups in terms of Iwasawa invariants of Selmer groups defined using p-adic Hodge Theory. These bounds have the same form as the formulae of Kobayashi, Kurihara and Sprung for supersingular elliptic curves.
We consider $\ell$-adic trace functions over finite fields taking values in cyclotomic integers, such as characters and exponential sums. Through ideas of Deligne and Katz, we explore probabilistic properties of the reductions modulo a prime ideal, exploiting especially the determination of their integral monodromy groups. In particular, this gives a generalization of a result of Lamzouri-Zaharescu on the distribution of short sums of the Legendre symbol reduced modulo an integer to all multiplicative characters and to hyper-Kloosterman sums.
The point of this paper is to give an explicit p-adic analytic construction of two Iwasawa functions L_p^\sharp(f,T) and L_p^\flat(f,T) for a weight two modular form \sum a_n q^n and a good prime p. This generalizes work of Pollack who worked in the supersingular case and also assumed a_p=0. The Iwasawa functions work in tandem to shed some light on the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectures in the cyclotomic direction: We bound the rank and estimate the growth of the Tate-Shafarevich group in the cyclotomic direction analytically, encountering a new phenomenon for small slopes.
Darmon's conjecture on a relation between cyclotomic units over real quadratic fields and certain algebraic regulators was recently solved by Mazur and Rubin by using their theory of Kolyvagin systems. In this paper, we formulate a "non-explicit" version of Darmon's conjecture for Euler systems defined for general $p$-adic representations, and prove it. In the process of the proof, we introduce a notion of "algebraic Kolyvagin systems", and develop their properties.
We prove an Iwasawa Main Conjecture for the class group of the $\mathfrak{p}$-cyclotomic extension $\mathcal{F}$ of the function field $\mathbb{F}_q(θ)$ ($\mathfrak{p}$ is a prime of $\mathbb{F}_q[θ]\,$), showing that its Fitting ideal is generated by a Stickelberger element. We use this and a link between the Stickelberger element and a $\mathfrak{p}$-adic $L$-function to prove a close analog of the Ferrero-Washington theorem for $\mathcal{F}$ and to provide informations on the $\mathfrak{p}$-adic valuations of the Bernoulli-Goss numbers $β(j)$ (i.e., on the values of the Goss $ζ$-function at…
For an algebraic number field K such that prime l splits completely in K we define a regulator R(K) that characterize the subgroup of universal norms from the cyclotomic extension of K in the completed group of S-units of K, where S consists of all prime divisors of l. We prove that inequality R(K) not equals 0 follows from the l-adic Schanuel conjecture and holds true for some Abelian extensions of imaginary quadratic fields.
We present a method to deal with the values of polynomials of type $P(z)=\prod_{d\in D}(1-z^d)^{j_d}$ on the unit circle. We use it to improve the known bounds on various measures of coefficients of cyclotomic and similar polynomials.
We collect some statements regarding equivalence of the parities of various class numbers and signature ranks of units in prime power cyclotomic fields. We correct some misstatements in the literature regarding these parities by providing an example of a prime cyclotomic field where the signature rank of the units and the signature rank of the circular units are not equal.
A result due to R. Greenberg gives a relation between the cardinality of Selmer groups of elliptic curves over number fields and the characteristic power series of Pontryagin duals of Selmer groups over cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_p$-extensions at good ordinary primes $p$. We extend Greenberg's result to more general $p$-adic Galois representations, including a large subclass of those attached to $p$-ordinary modular forms of level $Γ_0(N)$ with $p\nmid N$.
We investigate the interrelationships of three notions of primary units in the local cyclotomic field of $p$-th roots of~1($p$ being an odd prime number), especially with reference to global units.
Denote by $ε$ a primitive root of $N^{th}$-unity. In this paper, we show that the unit cyclotomic multiple zeta values for $μ_N$ generate all the cyclotomic multiple zeta values for $μ_N$ in cases $N=2,3,4$. Moreover, the unit cyclotomic multiple zeta values for $μ_N$ can be written as $\mathbb{Q}$-linear combinations of $\left(ζ\binom{1}ε\right)^n, \left(ζ\binom{1}{ε^{-1}}\right)^n$ and lower depth terms in each weight $n$ in case of $N=2,3$ and $4$. By detailed analysis of the motivic Galois action, we compute the coefficients of $\left(ζ\binom{1}ε\right)^n, \left(ζ\binom{1}{ε^{-1}}\right)^n…
For a real abelian field and for an odd prime p splitting in the field, we study a map between the p-parts of the class group and of the quotient of units modulo Cyclotomic Units, respectively, along the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of the field. We determine the kernel and the cokernel of this map assuming Greenberg's conjecture on the vanishing of the lambda-invariant of the extension.
Let n >= 1 and let p be a prime. Let t = 1 - zeta_{p^n}. Expand an integer j in [0,p^n-1], coprime to p, p-adically as j = sum_{s >= 0} a_s p^s. Denote the tensor product over Z_(p) by o . Then the #([0,j] - (p))th Z_(p)[t]-linear elementary divisor of the cyclotomic Dedekind embedding Z_(p)[t] o Z_(p)[t] --> prod_{i in (Z/p^n)^*} Z_(p)[t] has valuation -1 + sum_{s >= 0} (a_s (s+1) - a_{s+1} (s+2)) p^s at t. There is a similar result for the related cyclic Wedderburn embedding.
Let $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-q})$, where $q$ is any prime number congruent to $7$ modulo $8$, with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}$ and Hilbert class field $H$. Suppose $p\nmid [H:K]$ is a prime number which splits in $K$, say $p\mathcal{O}=\mathfrak{p}\mathfrak{p}^*$. Let $H_\infty=HK_\infty$ where $K_\infty$ is the unique $\mathbb{Z}_p$-extension of $K$ unramified outside $\mathfrak{p}$. Write $M(H_\infty)$ for the maximal abelian $p$-extension of $H_\infty$ unramified outside the primes above $\mathfrak{p}$, and set $X(H_\infty)=\mathrm{Gal}(M(H_\infty)/H_\infty)$. In this paper, we establish the…
In this paper, we obtain a formula for the special value of Euler-Dirichlet $L$-function $L_E(s,χ)$ at $s=1$. This leads to another class number formula of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{m})^{+}$, the maximal real subfield of $m$th cyclotomic field. From this formula, we construct a new type of cyclotomic units in $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})$, which implies a similar Kummer's relation between the ideal class number of $\mathbb{Q}(μ_{p^{n}})^{+}$ and the unit index.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the trivial zeros of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions by the CM congruence. We prove the existence of trivial zeros of the Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions for general CM fields and establish a first derivative formula of the cyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions at trivial zeros under some Leopoldt hypothesis. The crucial ingredients in our proof are a special case of $p$-adic Kronecker limit formula for CM fields and a leading term formula of anticyclotomic $p$-adic $L$-functions at trivial zeros via the explicit congruences between CM and non-CM Hida families o…
The notion of block divisibility naturally leads one to introduce unitary cyclotomic polynomials $Φ_n^*(x)$. They can be written as certain products of cyclotomic poynomials. We study the case where $n$ has two or three distinct prime factors using numerical semigroups, respectively Bachman's inclusion-exclusion polynomials. Given $m\ge 1$ we show that every integer occurs as a coefficient of $Φ^*_{mn}(x)$ for some $n\ge 1$. Here $n$ will typically have many different prime factors. We also consider similar questions for the polynomials $(x^n-1)/Φ_n^*(x),$ the inverse unitary cyclotomic polyno…
Kurihara established a refinement of the minus-part of the Iwasawa main conjecture for totally real number fields using the higher Fitting ideals. In this paper, we study the higher Fitting ideals of the plus-part of the Iwasawa module associated to the cyclotomic Z_p-extension of Q(μ_p) for an odd prime number p by similar methods as in Kurihara's work. We define the higher cyclotomic ideals C_i, which are ideals of the Iwasawa algebra defined by the Kolyvagin derivatives of cyclotomic units, and prove that they give upper bounds of the higher Fitting ideals. Our result can be regarded as a r…
In this essay, we see how prime cyclotomic fields (cyclotomic fields obtained by adjoining a primitive p-th root of unity to Q, where p is an odd prime) can lead to elegant proofs of number theoretical concepts. We namely develop the notion of primary units in a cyclotomic field, demonstrate their equivalence to real units in this case, and show how this leads to a proof of a special case of Fermat's Last Theorem. We finally modernize Dirichlet's solution to Pell's Equation.
We prove the rank of the group of signatures of the circular units (hence also the full group of units) of ${\mathbb Q}( ζ_m)^+$ tends to infinity with $m$. We also show the signature rank of the units differs from its maximum possible value by a bounded amount for all the real subfields of the composite of an abelian field with finitely many odd prime-power cyclotomic towers. In particular, for any prime $p$ the signature rank of the units of ${\mathbb Q}( ζ_{p^n})^+$ differs from $φ(p^n)/2$ by an amount that is bounded independent of $n$. Finally, we show conditionally that for general cyclo…
Let E/Q be an elliptic curve with good supersingular reduction at p with a_p(E)=0. We give a conjecture on the existence of analytic plus and minus p-adic L-functions of E over the Zp-cyclotomic extension of a finite Galois extension of Q where p is unramified. Under some technical conditions, we adopt the method of Bouganis and Venjakob for p-ordinary CM elliptic curves to construct such functions for a particular non-abelian extension.
We provide applications to studying the behavior of Selmer groups under specialization. We consider Selmer groups associated to four dimensional Galois representations coming from (i) the tensor product of two cuspidal Hida families $F$ and $G$, (ii) its cyclotomic deformation, (iii) the tensor product of a cusp form $f$ and the Hida family $G$, where $f$ is a classical specialization of $F$ with weight $k \geq 2$. We prove control theorems to relate (a) the Selmer group associated to the tensor product of Hida families $F$ and $G$ to the Selmer group associated to its cyclotomic deformation a…
We define a "period ring-valued beta function" and give a reciprocity law on its special values. The proof is based on some results of Rohrlich and Coleman concerning Fermat curves. We also have the following application. Stark's conjecture implies that the exponential of the derivatives at $s=0$ of partial zeta functions are algebraic numbers which satisfy a reciprocity law under certain conditions. It follows from Euler's formulas and properties of cyclotomic units when the base field is the rational number field. In this paper, we provide an alternative (and partial) proof by using the reci…
In this paper we study when two congruent $l$-adic Galois representations have congruent Selmer groups. We obtain results for representations from cyclotomic characters, Hecke characters and adjoints of modular forms.
