In this paper we classify the reducible representations of compact simple Lie groups all of whose orbits are tautly embedded in Euclidean space with respect to Z_2 coefficients.
We prove that the orbits of a polar action of a compact Lie group on a compact rank one symmetric space are tautly embedded with respect to Z_2-coefficients.
Bott and Samuelson constructed explicit cycles representing a basis of the Z_2-homology of the orbits of variationally complete representations of compact Lie groups. As a consequence, all those orbits are taut. We were able to show that an irreducible representation of a compact Lie group, all of whose orbits are taut, is either variationally complete or it is one of the following orthogonal representations (n bigger than or equal to 2): the (standard) x_R (spin) representation of SO(2)xSpin(9); or the (standard) x_C (standard) representation of U(2)xSp(n); or the (standard)^3 x_ H (standard)…
We prove that every (compact) taut submanifold in Euclidean space is real algebraic, i.e., is a connected component of a real irreducible algebraic variety in the same ambient space. This answers affirmatively a question of Nicolaas Kuiper raised in the 1980s.
Several classes of irreducible orthogonal representations of compact Lie groups that are of importance in Differential Geometry have the property that the second osculating spaces of all of their nontrivial orbits coincide with the representation space. We say that representations with this property are of class O^2. Our approach in the present paper will be to find restrictions on the class O^2 and then apply them to classify variationally complete and taut representations. The known classifications of cohomogeneity one and two orthogonal representations and more generally of polar representa…
This thesis treats two main topics: calibrated symplectic foliations, and local Lie groupoids. Calibrated symplectic foliations are one possible generalization of taut foliations of 3-manifolds to higher dimensions. Their study has been popular in recent years, and we collect several interesting results. We then show how de Rham's theory of currents, and Sullivan's theory of structure currents, can be applied in trying to understand the calibratability of symplectic foliations. Our study of local Lie groupoids begins with their definition and an exploration of some of their basic properties. N…
We continue the study of linear families of contact forms on 3-manifolds begun in our paper `Contact geometry and complex surfaces'. The present paper introduces Teichmuller and moduli spaces for so-called taut contact circles. By constructing a developing map for taut contact circles, we show that these geometrically defined deformation spaces are equivalent to certain spaces of representations of the fundamental group in appropriate Lie groups. Furthermore, we relate these deformation spaces to `classical' Teichmuller theory of Riemann surfaces and orbifolds.
The purpose of this paper is to show that any extension of a minimal Lie foliation on a compact manifold is a transversaly Riemannian g\h- foliation with trivial normal bundle. This result permits to classify the extensions of a minimal Lie foliation on a compact manifold from the Lie subgroups of its Lie group.
We give a classification, up to local isomorphisms, of semi-simple Lie groups without compact factors that can act faithfully and conformally on a compact Lorentz manifold of dimension greater than or equal to $3$.
We give a new method for manufacturing complete minimal submanifolds of compact Lie groups and their homogeneous quotient spaces. For this we make use of harmonic morphisms and basic representation theory of Lie groups. We then apply our method to construct many examples of compact minimal submanifolds of the special unitary groups.
Based on the representation theory and the study on the involutions of compact simple Lie groups, we show that $F_4$ admits non-naturally reductive Einstein metrics.
Let $G$ be a connected, simply-connected, compact simple Lie group. In this paper, we show that the isometry group of $G$ with a left-invariant pseudo-Riemannan metric is compact. Furthermore, the identity component of the isometry group is compact if $G$ is not simply-connected.
We describe the full group of isometries of absolutely simple, compact, connected real Lie groups, of SO(4) and of U(n), endowed with suitable bi-invariant Riemannian metrics.
We give a necessary and sufficient condition for orbits of commutative Hermann actions and actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups on compact Lie groups to be biharmonic in terms of symmetric triad with multiplicities. By this criterion, we determine all the proper biharmonic submanifolds in irreducible symmetric spaces of compact type which are singular orbits of commutative Hermann actions of cohomogeneity two. Also, in compact simple Lie groups, we determine all the biharmonic hypersurfaces which are regular orbits of actions of the direct product of two symmetric subgroups…
We show that a left invariant metric on a compact Lie group $G$ which is obtained by stretching a biinvariant metric in the direction of a subalgebra $\h$ of $\g$ always has some negative sectional curvature, unless the semi-simple part of $\h$ is an ideal of $\g$.
We show that one can lift locally real analytic curves from the orbit space of a compact Lie group representation, and that one can lift smooth curves even globally, but under an assumption.
In this paper we construct infinitely many examples of a Riemannian submersion from a simple, compact Lie group $G$ with bi-invariant metric onto a smooth manifold that cannot be a quotient of $G$ by a group action. This partially addresses a question of K. Grove's about Riemannian submersions from Lie groups.
Fix a simple complex Lie group G and a principal sl(2,C) subalgebra of Lie(G). Then the moduli space of semi-stable, topologically trivial G-Higgs bundles on a hyperbolic, spin Riemann surface acquires a marked point. This is the unique C*-fixed point on the Hitchin section. We describe a universal analytic family of deformations which provides holomorphic Darboux coordinates in a neighbourhood of the section. This is a special case of a more general deformation-theoretic construction in the spirit of Kuranishi theory. As a toy example of the latter we consider the tautological family of centr…
We show that, in compact semisimple Lie groups and Lie algebras, any neighbourhood of the identity gets mapped, under the commutator map, to a neighbourhood of the identity.
The reduction of biharmonic maps equation in terms of the Maurer-Cartan form for all smooth map of any compact Riemannian manifolds into a compact Lie group with bi-invariant Riemannian metric is obtained. By this formula, all the biharmonic curves into a compact Lie group and all biharmonic maps from a 2-dimensional open domain into a compact Lie group are characterized.
Pittie [Pit88] proved that the Dolbeault cohomology of all left-invariant complex structures on compact Lie groups can be computed by looking at the Dolbeault cohomology induced on a conveniently chosen maximal torus. We use the algebraic classification of left-invariant CR structures of maximal rank on compact Lie groups [CK04] to generalize Pittie's result to left-invariant Levi-flat CR structures of maximal rank on compact Lie groups.
This paper computes the obstruction to the existence of equivariant extensions of basic gerbes over non-simply connected compact simple Lie groups. By modifying a (finite dimensional) construction of Gawȩdzki-Reis [J. Geom. Phys. 50(1):28-55, 2004], we exhibit basic equivariant bundle gerbes over non-simply connected compact simple Lie groups.
A compact semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ induces a Poisson structure $π$ on the unit sphere $S$ in $\mathfrak{g}^*$. We compute the moduli space of Poisson structures on $S$ around $π$. This is the first explicit computation of a Poisson moduli space in dimension greater or equal than three around a degenerate (i.e. not symplectic) Poisson structure.
It is proved that the orbit space of an irreducible representation of a simple connected compact Lie group of type B, C, or D can be a smooth manifold only in two cases.
The 2-rank of a compact Lie group $G$ is the maximal possible rank of the elementary 2-subgroup ${\mathbb Z}_{2}\times... {\mathbb Z}_{2}$ of $G$. The study of 2-ranks (and $p$-rank for any prime $p$) of compact Lie groups was initiated in 1953 by A. Borel and J.-P. Serre. Since then the 2-ranks of compact Lie groups have been investigated by many mathematician. The 2-ranks of compact Lie groups relate closely with several important areas in mathematics. In this article, we survey important results concerning 2-ranks of compact Lie groups. In particular, we present the complete determination o…
In this paper we introduce a new type of exponential map in semi-simple compact Lie groups, which is related to the sub-Riemannian geometry generated by the orthogonal complement of a Cartan subalgebra in a similar way to how the group exponential map is related to the Riemannian geometry.
In this paper, we prove an existence result for Kähler-Einstein metrics on $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of Lie groups. As an application, we classify $\mathbb Q$-Fano compactifications of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$ which admit a Kähler-Einstein metric with the same volume as that of a smooth Fano compactification of $SO_4(\mathbb C)$.
We consider deformations of left-invariant complex structures on simply connected semisimple compact Lie groups which are a priori non-invariant. Computing their cohomologies, we show that they are not actually biholomorphic to left-invariant (right-invariant) complex structures.
This article aims to explore new perspectives offered by Kasparov's recent work on transverse index theory in the context of actions of compact Lie groups on a manifold, and hints at potential connections to the work of Berline-Vergne and Paradan-Vergne.
Let $G$ be a compact connected Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric. We calculate the asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel of the laplacian on $G$ and the heat trace using Lie algebra methods. The Duflo isomorphism plays a key role.
We expose a K-theoretic approach to study group C*-algebras and C*-algebraic compact quantum groups: 1. The conception of multidimensional geometric quantization and the index of group C*-algebras; 2. the entire homology of noncommutative de Rham currents and the noncommutative Chern characters, and their computation for C*-algebras of compact Lie groups and compact quantum groups.
