The classical problem of algebraic models for homotopy types is precisely stated, to our knowledge for the first time. Two different natural statements for this problem are produced, the simplest one being entirely solved by the notion of SSEH-structure, due to the authors. Other tentative solutions, Postnikov towers and E_\infty-chain complexes, are considered and compared with the SSEH-structures. In particular, which looks at least like an unfortunate imprecision in the usual definition of the k-``invariants'' is explained, which implies we seem far from a solution for the ideal statement of our problem. At the positive side, the problem of the computability of the Postnikov towers is solved.
Crossed modules are known to be a model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types; formally, the homotopy category of crossed modules is equivalent to the category of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. In forming the homotopy category of crossed modules, one must resort to computing derived morphisms using non-constructive topological methods, but Behrang Noohi was able to find an algebraic model of these derived morphisms called butterflies. The result is a completely algebraic model of pointed connected homotopy 2-types. Reduced crossed complexes are a generalization of crossed modules and mode…
We investigate the homotopy type of the space of tuples of polynomials inducing base-point preserving algebraic maps from the circle S1 to a toric variety XΣ. In particular, we prove a homotopy stability result for this space by combining the Vassiliev spectral sequence and the scanning map.
This paper deals with the homotopy theory of differential graded operads. We endow the Koszul dual category of curved conilpotent cooperads, where the notion of quasi-isomorphism barely makes sense, with a model category structure Quillen equivalent to that of operads. This allows us to describe the homotopy properties of differential graded operads in a simpler and richer way, using obstruction methods.
We show that if $E$ is a $p$-local Landweber exact homology theory of height $n$ and $p > n^2+n+1$, then there exists an equivalence $h \mathcal{S}p_{E} \simeq h\mathcal{D}(E_{*}E)$ between homotopy categories of $E$-local spectra and differential $E_{*}E$-comodules, generalizing Bousfield's and Franke's results to heights $n > 1$.
Multi-sorted algebraic theories provide a formalism for describing various structures on spaces that are of interest in homotopy theory. The results of Badzioch and Bergner showed that an interesting feature of this formalism is the following rigidification property. Every multi-sorted algebraic theory defines a category of homotopy algebras, i.e. a category of spaces equipped with certain structure that is to some extent homotopy invariant. Each such homotopy algebra can be replaced by a weakly equivalent strict algebra which is a purely algebraic structure on a space. The equivalence between…
In this article, we extend Sullivan's PL de Rham theory to obtain simple algebraic models for the rational homotopy theory of parametrised spectra. This simplifies and complements the results of arXiv:1910.14608, which are based on Quillen's rational homotopy theory. According to Sullivan, the rational homotopy type of a nilpotent space $X$ with finite Betti numbers is completely determined by a commutative differential graded algebra $A$ modelling the cup product on rational cohomology. In this article we extend this correspondence between topology and algebra to parametrised stable homotopy …
Building on Quillen's rational homotopy theory, we obtain algebraic models for the rational homotopy theory of parametrised spectra. For any simply-connected space $X$ there is a dg Lie algebra $Λ_X$ and a (coassociative cocommutative) dg coalgebra $C_X$ that model the rational homotopy type. In this article, we prove that the rational homotopy type of an $X$-parametrised spectrum is completely encoded by a $Λ_X$-representation and also by a $C_X$-comodule. The correspondence between rational parametrised spectra and algebraic data is obtained by means of symmetric monoidal equivalences of hom…
We give details of models for rational torus equivariant homotopy theory based on (a) all subgroups, connected subgroups or dimensions of subgroups and (b) on pairs or general flags. We provide comparison functors and show the models are equivalent. This is used in (A) An algebraic model for rational torus equivariant spectra (with B.Shipley; the new version of 1101.2511), (B) An algebraic model for the toral part of rational equivariant G-spectra for an arbitrary compact Lie group (1501.03425) and (C) construction of torus equivariant spectra from algebraic geometric data. It also highlights …
Inspired by the Ax--Kochen isomorphism theorem, we develop a notion of categorical ultraproducts to capture the generic behavior of an infinite collection of mathematical objects. We employ this theory to give an asymptotic solution to the approximation problem in chromatic homotopy theory. More precisely, we show that the ultraproduct of the $E(n,p)$-local categories over any non-prinicipal ultrafilter on the set of prime numbers is equivalent to the ultraproduct of certain algebraic categories introduced by Franke. This shows that chromatic homotopy theory at a fixed height is asymptotically…
We calculate $π_*K(\mathbb S)[1/2]$, the homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb S)$ away from 2, in terms of the homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb Z)$, the homotopy groups of ${\mathbb C}P^\infty_{-1}$, and the homotopy groups of $\mathbb S$. This builds on the work of Waldhausen, who computed the rational homotopy groups (building on work of Quillen and Borel) and Rognes, who calculated the groups at regular primes in terms of the homotopy groups of ${\mathbb C}P^\infty_{-1}$, and the homotopy groups of $\mathbb S$.

We study two different flavours of A^1-homotopy theory in the setting of spectral algebraic geometry, and compare them to classical A^1-homotopy theory. As an application we show that the spectral analogue of Weibel's homotopy invariant K-theory collapses to the classical theory. Along the way we give a new construction of nonconnective algebraic K-theory of stable infinity-categories via a generalization of the Bass-Thomason-Trobaugh construction.
In this paper, we study the global structure of an algebraic avatar of the derived category of ind-coherent sheaves on the moduli stack of formal groups. In analogy with the stable homotopy category, we prove a version of the nilpotence theorem as well as the chromatic convergence theorem, and construct a generalized chromatic spectral sequence. Furthermore, we discuss analogs of the telescope conjecture and chromatic splitting conjecture in this setting, using the local duality techniques established earlier in joint work with Valenzuela.
The James fibrations give rise to the geometric EHP sequences of homotopy groups of spheres. Using techniques from the Lambda algebra, \cite{BCKQRS66} shows that there are similar long exact sequences of Ext groups defining the $E_{2}-$page of the Bousfield-Kan spectral sequence (also known as the unstable Adams spectral sequence) computing homotopy groups of spheres. In this paper, we give another proof for this phenomenon.
Shipley and the author have given an algebraic model for free rational G-spectra for a compact Lie group G. In the present note we describe, at the level of homotopy categories, the algebraic models for induction, restriction and coinduction relating free rational G-spectra and free rational H-spectra for a subgroup H of G. The justification for giving this short and elementary account is (1) the author found it difficult to guess the correct answer, (2) the answer depends on which Quillen equivalence is used between topology and algebra and (3) this has provided useful insight in several othe…
Greenlees established an equivalence of categories between the homotopy category of rational SO(3)-spectra and the derived category DA(SO(3)) of a certain abelian category. In this paper we lift this equivalence of homotopy categories to the level of Quillen equivalences of model categories. Methods used in this paper provide the first step towards obtaining an algebraic model for the toral part of rational G-spectra, for any compact Lie group G.
Algebraic quantum field theory and prefactorization algebra are two mathematical approaches to quantum field theory. In this monograph, using a new coend definition of the Boardman-Vogt construction of a colored operad, we define homotopy algebraic quantum field theories and homotopy prefactorization algebras and investigate their homotopy coherent structures. Homotopy coherent diagrams, homotopy inverses, A-infinity-algebras, E-infinity-algebras, and E-infinity-modules arise naturally in this context. In particular, each homotopy algebraic quantum field theory has the structure of a homotopy …
Like categories, small 2-categories have well-understood classifying spaces. In this paper, we deal with homotopy types represented by 2-diagrams of 2-categories. Our results extend to homotopy colimits of 2-functors lower categorical analogues that have been classically used in algebraic topology and algebraic K-theory, such as the Homotopy Invariance Theorem (by Bousfield and Kan), the Homotopy Colimit Theorem (Thomason), Theorems A and B (Quillen), or the Homotopy Cofinality Theorem (Hirschhorn).
We compute the motivic homotopy groups of algebraic cobordism over number fields, the motivic homotopy groups of 2-complete algebraic cobordism over the real numbers and rings of $2$-integers and the motivic homotopy groups of mod 2 motivic Morava $K$-theory over fields with low virtual cohomological dimension. As an application we relate the order of the algebraic cobordism groups of rings of 2-integers to special values of Dedekind $ζ$-functions of totally real abelian number fields.
We show that the homotopy category of commutative algebra spectra over the Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectrum of the integers is equivalent to the homotopy category of E-infinity-monoids in unbounded chain complexes. We do this by establishing a chain of Quillen equivalences between the corresponding model categories. We also provide a Quillen equivalence to commutative monoids in the category of functors from the category of finite sets and injections to unbounded chain complexes.
We define an unstable equivariant motivic homotopy category for an algebraic group over a Noetherian base scheme. We show that equivariant algebraic $K$-theory is representable in the resulting homotopy category. Additionally, we establish homotopical purity and blow-up theorems for finite abelian groups.
