In this paper we study the orthogonality conditions satisfied by Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(α,β)}$ when the parameters $α$ and $β$ are not necessarily $>-1$. We establish orthogonality on a generic closed contour on a Riemann surface. Depending on the parameters, this leads to either full orthogonality conditions on a single contour in the plane, or to multiple orthogonality conditions on a number of contours in the plane. In all cases we show that the orthogonality conditions characterize the Jacobi polynomial $P_n^{(α, β)}$ of degree $n$ up to a constant factor.
We study Jacobi matrices on trees whose coefficients are generated by multiple orthogonal polynomials. Hilbert space decomposition into an orthogonal sum of cyclic subspaces is obtained. For each subspace, we find generators and the generalized eigenfunctions written in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. The spectrum and its spectral type are studied for large classes of orthogonality measures.
In this manuscript we study algebraic and analytic properties of the sequence of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Jacobi differential operator. A fluid dynamics model for source points location of a flow of an incompressible fluid with preassigned stagnation points is also considered.
Orthogonality of the Jacobi and of Laguerre polynomials, P_n^(a,b) and L_n^(a), is established for a,b complex (a,b not negative integers and a+b different from -2,-3,...) using the Hadamard finite part of the integral which gives their orthogonality in the classical cases. Riemann-Hilbert problems that these polynomials satisfy are found. The results are formally similar to the ones in the classical case (when the real parts of a,b are greater than -1)

This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. Jacobi polynomials are mapped onto the continuous Hahn polynomials by the Fourier transform and the orthogonality relations for the continuous Hahn polynomials then follow from the orthogonality relations for the Jacobi polynomials and the Parseval formula. The purpose of this paper is to find the characterization of the Sheffer polynomial sets satisfying the d-orthogonality conditions. The generating function form of these polynomial sets is given in Theorem 2.2. As applications of the Theorem 2.2, we revisit the d-orthogonal polynomial sets exist in the literature and discover new d-orthogonal polynomial sets. The orthogonality relations of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials are discussed. In case of two variables, the necessary and sufficient conditions of orthogonality is given by Grünbaum and Rahman in [SIGMA 6 (2010), 090, 12 pages, arXiv:1007.4327]. It is well known that the family of Hahn polynomials $\{h_n^{α,β}(x;N)\}_{n\ge 0}$ is orthogonal with respect to a certain weight function up to $N$. In this paper we present a factorization for Hahn polynomials for a degree higher than $N$ and we prove that these polynomials can be characterized by a $Δ$-Sobolev orthogonality. Using a special case of Askey's $q$-beta integral evaluation formula, we determine orthogonality relations for the Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials of type II with respect to a family of measures supported on a discrete subset of $\mathbb R$. From spectral analysis of the corresponding second-order $q$-difference operator we obtain an infinite set of functions that complement the Al-Salam--Carlitz II polynomials to an orthogonal basis of the associated $L^2$-space.

We show how to obtain linear combinations of polynomials in an orthogonal sequence $\{P_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, such as $Q_{n,k}(x)=\sum\limits_{i=0}^k a_{n,i}P_{n-i}(x)$, $a_{n,0}a_{n,k}\neq0$, that characterize quasi-orthogonal polynomials of order $k\le n-1$. Generalized Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal polynomials related to a weight function which is smooth and positive on the whole interval of orthogonality up to a finite number of points, where algebraic singularities occur. The influence of these singular points on the asymptotic behaviour of the recurrence coefficients is investigated.
The radial part of the wave function of an electron in a Coulomb potential is the product of a Laguerre polynomial and an exponential with the variable scaled by a factor depending on the degree. This note presents an elementary proof of the orthogonality of wave functions with differing energy levels. It is also shown that this is the only other natural orthogonality for Laguerre polynomials. By expanding in terms of the usual Laguerre polynomial basis an analogous strange orthogonality is obtained for Meixner polynomials.
In this paper, a sequence of linear combination of $R_{I}$ type polynomials such that the terms in this sequence have a common zero is constructed. A biorthogonality relation arising from such a sequence is discussed. Besides a sequence of para-orthogonal polynomials by removing the common zero using suitable conditions is obtained. Finally, a case of hypergeometric functions is studied to illustrate the results obtained.
In this paper we study sequences of vector orthogonal polynomials. The vector orthogonality presented here provides a reinterpretation of what is known in the literature as matrix orthogonality. These systems of orthogonal polynomials satisfy three-term recurrence relations with matrix coefficients that do not obey to any type of symmetry. In this sense the vectorial reinterpretation allows us to study a non-symmetric case of the matrix orthogonality. We study the Dickson polynomials of the (k+1)-th kind over the field of complex numbers. We show that they are a family of co-recursive orthogonal polynomials with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional L_{k}. We find an integral representation for L_{k} and compute explicit expressions for all of its moments.

The idea of this review article is to discuss in a unified way the orthogonality of all positive definite polynomial solutions of the $q$-hypergeometric difference equation on the $q$-linear lattice by means of a qualitative analysis of the $q$-Pearson equation. The dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ correspond to indeterminate moment problem and, therefore, have one-parameter family of extremal orthogonality relations. It is shown that special cases of dual discrete $q$-ultraspherical polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$, when $s=q^{-1}$ and $s=q$, are directly connected with $q^{-1}$-Hermite polynomials. These connections are given in an explicit form. Using these relations, all extremal orthogonality relations for these special cases of polynomials $D_n^{(s)}(μ(x;s)|q)$ are found.
Below the normalized weighted reciprocal of the Christoffel function with respect to exceptional Jacobi polynomials is investigated. It is proved that it tends to the equilibrium measure of the interval of orthogonality in weak-star sense. The main tool of this study is the multiplication operator and examination of behavior of zeros of the corresponding average characteristic polynomial. Finally, as an application of multiplication operator, location of zeros of certain self-inversive polynomials are examined.

We introduce a new multivariate orthogonal polynomial which is a 2-parameter deformation of the spherical polynomial by harmonic analysis on symmetric cone. This is also regarded as a multivariate analogue of the circular Jacobi polynomial. Further, the weight function of its orthogonality relation coincides with the circular Jacobi ensemble defined by Bourgade et al.. We also obtain its main properties : generating function, pseudo differential equation and deteraminant expression.
We introduce two kinds of multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials by imposing orthogonality conditions with respect to r discrete little q-Jacobi measures on the exponential lattice q^k (k=0,1,2,3,...), where 0 < q < 1. We show that these multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials have useful q-difference properties, such as a Rodrigues formula (consisting of a product of r difference operators). Some properties of the zeros of these polynomials and some asymptotic properties will be given as well.
The q-Laguerre polynomials correspond to an indetermined moment problem. For explicit discrete non-N-extremal measures corresponding to Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$-summation we complement the orthogonal q-Laguerre polynomials into an explicit orthogonal basis for the corresponding L^2-space. We give formulas for the density of the measure of orthogonality for orthonormal polynomials with unbounded recurrence coefficients. Persymmetric Jacobi matrices are invariant under reflection with respect to the anti-diagonal. The associated orthogonal polynomials have distinctive properties that are discussed. They are found in particular to be also orthogonal on the restrictions either to the odd or to the even points of the complete orthogonality lattice. This is exploited to design very efficient inverse problem algorithms for the reconstruction of persymmetric Jacobi matrices from spectral points.
