We give a detailed description of the resolution of the identity of a second order $q$-difference operator considered as an unbounded self-adjoint operator on two different Hilbert spaces. The $q$-difference operator and the two choices of Hilbert spaces naturally arise from harmonic analysis on the quantum group $SU_q(1,1)$ and $SU_q(2)$. The spectral analysis associated to $SU_q(1,1)$ leads to the big $q$-Jacobi function transform together with its Plancherel measure and inversion formula. The dual orthogonality relations give a one-parameter family of non-extremal orthogonality measures for the continuous dual $q^{-1}$-Hahn polynomials with $q^{-1}>1$, and explicit sets of functions which complement these polynomials to orthogonal bases of the associated Hilbert spaces. The spectral analysis associated to $SU_q(2)$ leads to a functional analytic proof of the orthogonality relations and quadratic norm evaluations for the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials.
Big $q$-Jacobi functions are eigenfunctions of a second order $q$-difference operator $L$. We study $L$ as an unbounded self-adjoint operator on an $L^2$-space of functions on $\mathbb R$ with a discrete measure. We describe explicitly the spectral decomposition of $L$ using an integral transform $\mathcal F$ with two different big $q$-Jacobi functions as a kernel, and we construct the inverse of $\mathcal F$.
This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality…
We study a new family of "classical" orthogonal polynomials, here called big -1 Jacobi polynomials, which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue problem with differential operators of Dunkl-type. These polynomials can be obtained from the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials in the limit $q \to -1$. An explicit expression of these polynomials in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric functions is found. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal on the union of two symmetric intervals of the real axis. We show that the big -1 Jacobi polynomials can be obtained from the Bannai-Ito poly…
A limit formula from q-Racah polynomials to big q-Jacobi polynomials is given which can be considered as a limit formula for orthogonal polynomials. This is extended to a multi-parameter limit with 3 parameters, also involving (q-)Hahn polynomials, little q-Jacobi polynomials and Jacobi polynomials. Also the limits from Askey-Wilson to Wilson polynomials and from q-Racah to Racah polynomials are given in a more conceptual way.
We introduce a new map from polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle to polynomials orthogonal on the real axis. This map is closely related with the theory of CMV matrices. It contains an arbitrary parameter which leads to a linear operator pencil. We show that the little and big -1 Jacobi polynomials are naturally obtained under this map from the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle.
The q-Heun operator of the big q-Jacobi type on the exponential grid is defined. This operator is the most general second order q-difference operator that maps polynomials of degree $n$ to polynomials of degree $n+1$. It is tridiagonal in bases made out of either q-Pochhammer or big q-Jacobi polynomials and is bilinear in the operators of the q-Hahn algebra. The extension of this algebra that includes the q-Heun operator as generator is described. Biorthogonal Pastro polynomials are shown to satisfy a generalized eigenvalue problem or equivalently to be in the kernel of a special linear pencil…
The main result of the paper is a construction of a five-parameter family of new bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These bases are inhomogeneous and share many properties of systems of orthogonal polynomials on an interval of the real line. This means, in particular, that the algebra of symmetric functions is embedded into the algebra of continuous functions on a certain compact space Omega, and under this realization, our bases turn into orthogonal bases of weighted Hilbert spaces corresponding to certain probability measures on Omega. These measures are of independent interest ---…
A two-variable generalization of the Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials is introduced and characterized. These bivariate polynomials are constructed as a coupled product of two univariate Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials. Their orthogonality measure is obtained. Their bispectral properties (eigenvalue equations and recurrence relations) are determined through a limiting process from the two-variable Big $q$-Jacobi polynomials of Lewanowicz and Woźny. An alternative derivation of the weight function using Pearson-type equations is presented.
New convolution identities for orthogonal polynomials belonging to the $q=-1$ analog of the Askey-scheme are obtained. A specialization of the Chihara polynomials will play a central role as the eigenfunctions of a special element of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in the positive discrete series representation. Using the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, a convolution identity for the Specialized Chihara, the dual -1 Hahn and the Big -1 Jacobi polynomials is found. Using the Racah coefficients, a convolution identity for the Big -1 Jacobi and the Bannai-Ito polynomials is found. Finally…
From Koornwinder's interpretation of big $q$-Legendre polynomials as spherical elements on the quantum $SU(2)$ group an addition formula is derived for the big $q$-Legendre polynomial. The formula involves Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials, little $q$-Jacobi polynomials and dual $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials. For the little $q$-ultraspherical polynomials a product formula in terms of a big $q$-Legendre polynomial follows by $q$-integration. The addition and product formula for the Legendre polynomials are obtained when $q$ tends to 1.
The little q-Jacobi function transform depends on three parameters. An explicit expression as a sum of two very-well-poised 8W7-series is derived for the dual transmutation kernel (a kind of non-symmetric Poisson kernel) relating little q-Jacobi function transforms for different parameter sets. A product formula for the dual transmutation kernel is obtained. For the inverse transform the transmutation kernel is given as a 3\phi2-series, and a product formula as a finite sum is derived. The transmutation kernel gives rise to intertwining operators for the second order hypergeometric q-differenc…
We illustrate how Jordan algebras can provide a framework for the interpretation of certain classes of orthogonal polynomials. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are eigenfunctions of a first order operator of Dunkl type. We consider an algebra that has this operator (up to constants) as one of its three generators and whose defining relations are given in terms of anticommutators. It is a special case of the Askey-Wilson algebra AW(3). We show how the structure and recurrence relations of the big -1 Jacobi polynomials are obtained from the representations of this algebra. We also present ladder op…
The q-Laguerre polynomials correspond to an indetermined moment problem. For explicit discrete non-N-extremal measures corresponding to Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$-summation we complement the orthogonal q-Laguerre polynomials into an explicit orthogonal basis for the corresponding L^2-space. The dual orthogonal system consists of so-called big q-Bessel functions, which can be obtained as a rigorous limit of the orthogonal system of big q-Jacobi polynomials. Interpretations on the SU(1,1) and E(2) quantum groups are discussed.
Let $R$ be a root system of type BC in $\mathfrak a=\mathbb R^r$ of general positive multiplicity. We introduce certain canonical weight function on $\mathbb R^r$ which in the case of symmetric domains corresponds to the integral kernel of the Berezin transform. We compute its spherical transform and prove certain Bernstein-Sato type formula. This generalizes earlier work of Unterberger-Upmeier, van Dijk-Pevsner, Neretin and the author. Associated to the weight functions there are Heckman-Opdam orthogonal polynomials of Jacobi type on the compact torus, after a change of variables they form an…
In this paper using the well known asymptotic relations between Jacobi polynomials and Hermite and Laguerre polynomials. We develop a transference method to obtain the $L^p$-continuity of the Gaussian-Riesz transform and the $L^p$-continuity of the Laguerre-Riesz transform from the $L^p$-continuity of the Jacobi-Riesz transform, in dimension one.
We introduce a maximal operator for the natural analogue of the disc multiplier in the framework of Jacobi analysis and determine the mapping properties of said maximal operator, including weak type endpoint results. In particular we obtain sharp information on the almost everywhere convergence of the inverse Jacobi transform.
In this paper, we consider a natural extension of several results related to Krall-type polynomials introducing a modification of a $q$-classical linear functional via the addition of one or two mass points. The limit relations between the $q$-Krall type modification of big $q$-Jacobi, little $q$-Jacobi, big $q$-Laguerre, and other families of the $q$-Hahn tableau are established.
This paper is the continuation of the study on discrete harmonic analysis related to Jacobi expansions initiated in [1]. Considering the operator $\mathcal{J}^{(α,β)}=J^{(α,β)}-I$, where $J^{(α,β)}$ is the three-term recurrence relation for the normalized Jacobi polynomials and $I$ is the identity operator, we focus on the study of weighted inequalities for the Riesz transform associated with it.
Discrete analogs of the classical Fourier-Jacobi transform are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to parameters of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a+in/2,a-in/2;\ c; -x^2 ), \ x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, a,c > 0, i $ is the imaginary unit. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.
The main goal is to interpret the Askey-Wilson function and the corresponding transform pair on the quantum SU(1,1) group. A weight on the C^*-algebra of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on the quantum SU(1,1) group is studied, which is left and right invariant in a weak sense with respect to a product defined using Wall functions. The Haar weight restricted to certain subalgebras are explicitly determined in terms of an infinitely supported Jackson integral and in terms of an infinitely supported Askey-Wilson type measure. For the evaluation the spectral analysis of explicit unbound…
We show that a bounded function $m$ on $\R$ not necessarily integrable at infinity may still yield $L^p$-bounded convolution operators for the Jacobi transform if the nontangential boundary values of $ωm$ along the edges of a certain strip in $\C$ yield Euclidean Fourier multipliers, for $ω$ suitably defined. This partially generalizes similar results by Giulini, Mauceri, and Meda (on rank one symmetric spaces) and Astengo (on Damek--Ricci spaces).
We construct families of bispectral difference operators of the form a(n)T + b(n) + c(n) T^{-1} where T is the shift operator. They are obtained as discrete Darboux transformations from appropriate extensions of Jacobi operators. We conjecture that along with operators previously constructed by Grunbaum, Haine, Horozov, and Iliev they exhaust all bispectral regular (i.e. a(n)c(n) \neq 0, for all integer n) operators of the form above.
In this paper we present an addition to Askey's scheme of q-hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials involving classes of q-special functions which do not consist of polynomials only. The special functions are q-analogues of the Jacobi and Bessel function, and are Askey-Wilson functions, big q-Jacobi functions and little q-Jacobi functions and the corrresponding q-Bessel functions. The generalised orthogonality relations and the second order q-difference equations for these families are given. Limit transitions between these families are discussed. The quantum group theoretic interpretations are …
We consider direct and inverse Jacobi transforms with measures $dμ(t)=2^{2ρ}(\sinh t)^{2α+1}(\cosh t)^{2β+1}\,dt$ and $dσ(λ)=(2π)^{-1}\bigl|\frac{2^{ρ-iλ}Γ(α+1)Γ(iλ)} {Γ((ρ+iλ)/2)Γ((ρ+iλ)/2-β)}\bigr|^{-2}\,dλ$, respectively. We solve the following generalized Logan problem: to find \[ \infΛ((-1)^{m-1}f), \quad m\in \mathbb{N}, \] where $Λ(f)=\sup\,\{λ>0\colon f(λ)>0\}$ and the infimum is taken over all nontrivial even entire functions $f$ of exponential type that are Jacobi transforms of positive measures with supports on an interval. Here, if $m\ge 2$, then we additionally assume that $\int_{…
Let J be a monic Jacobi matrix associated with the Cauchy transform F of a probability measure. We construct a pair of the lower and upper triangular block matrices L and U such that J=LU and the matrix J_c=UL is a monic generalized Jacobi matrix associated with the function F_c(z)=zF(z)+1. It turns out that the Christoffel transformation J_c of a bounded monic Jacobi matrix J can be unbounded. This phenomenon is shown to be related to the effect of accumulating at infinity of the poles of the Padé approximants of the function F_c although F_c is holomorphic at infinity. The case of the UL-fac…
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
We use precise asymptotic expansions for Jacobi functions $ϕ^{(α,β)}_λ$ parameters $α$, $β$ satisfying $α>1/2$, $α>β>-1/2$, to generalizing classical Hörmander-type multiplier theorem for the spherical transform on a rank one Riemannian symmetric space (by Clerc/Stein and Stanton/Tomas) to the framework of Jacobi analysis. In particular, multiplier results for the spherical transform on Damek--Ricci spaces are subsumed by this approach, and it yields multiplier results for the hypergeometric `Heckman--Opdam transform' associated with a rank one root system. We obtain near-optimal $L^p-L^q$ est…
We introduce multiple Wilson polynomials, which give a new example of multiple orthogonal polynomials (Hermite-Pade polynomials) of type II. These polynomials can be written as a Jacobi-Pineiro transform, which is a generalization of the Jacobi transform for Wilson polynomials, found by T.H. Koornwinder. Here we need to introduce Jacobi and Jacobi-Pineiro polynomials with complex parameters. Some explicit formulas are provided for both Jacobi-Pineiro and multiple Wilson polynomials, one of them in terms of Kampe de Feriet series. Finally we look at some limiting relations and construct a part …
In this note we revive a transformation that was introduced by H. S. Wall and that establishes a one-to-one correspondence between continued fraction representations of Schur, Carathéodory, and Nevanlinna functions. This transformation can be considered as an analog of the Szegő mapping but it is based on the Cayley transform, which relates the upper half-plane to the unit disc. For example, it will be shown that, when applying the Wall transformation, instead of OPRL, we get a sequence of orthogonal rational functions that satisfy three-term recurrence relation of the form $(H-λJ)u=0$, where …
Following a symmetrization procedure proposed recently by Nowak and Stempak, we consider the setting of symmetrized Jacobi expansions. In this framework we investigate mapping properties of several fundamental harmonic analysis operators, including Riesz transforms, Poisson semigroup maximal operator, Littlewood-Paley-Stein square functions and multipliers of Laplace and Laplace-Stieltjes transform type. Our paper delivers also some new results in the original setting of classical Jacobi expansions.
Simple derivation is presented of the four families of infinitely many shape invariant Hamiltonians corresponding to the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Darboux-Crum transformations are applied to connect the well-known shape invariant Hamiltonians of the radial oscillator and the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential to the shape invariant potentials of Odake-Sasaki. Dutta and Roy derived the two lowest members of the exceptional Laguerre polynomials by this method. The method is expanded to its full generality and many other ramifications, including the aspects of generalised Bochner …
The multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials form a complete set of orthogonal polynomials. They satisfy second-order differential equations but not three term recurrence relations, because of the 'holes' in their degrees. The multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials have Wronskian expressions originating from multiple Darboux transformations. For the ease of applications, two different forms of simplified expressions of the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials are derived based on various identities. The parity transformation property of the multi-indexed Jacobi polynomials…
Given a sequence of orthonormal polynomials on $\Bbb R$,$\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$, with $p_n$ of degree $n$, we define the discrete probability distribution $Ψ_n(x) = \left(Ψ_{n,1}(x), \dots Ψ_{n,n}(x) \right) $, with $Ψ_{n,j}(x) = \big(\sum_{j=0}^{n-1} p_j^2(x)\big)^{-1} p_{j-1}^2(x)$, $j=1, \dots, n$. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior as $n\to \infty$ of the Shannon entropy $\mathcal S ((Ψ_n(x))= -\sum_{j=1}^n Ψ_{n,j}(x) \log (Ψ_{n,j}(x))$, $x\in (-1,1)$, when the orthogonality weight is $ (1-x)^α\, (1+x)^β\, h(x) $, $α, β> -1$, and where $h$ is real, analytic, and positive on $[-1,1…
Jacobi polynomials are mapped onto the continuous Hahn polynomials by the Fourier transform and the orthogonality relations for the continuous Hahn polynomials then follow from the orthogonality relations for the Jacobi polynomials and the Parseval formula. In a special case this relation dates back to work by Bateman in 1933 and we follow a part of the historical development for these polynomials. Some applications of this relation are given.
We study several fundamental operators in harmonic analysis related to Jacobi expansions, including Riesz transforms, imaginary powers of the Jacobi operator, the Jacobi-Poisson semigroup maximal operator and Littlewood-Paley-Stein square functions. We show that these are (vector-valued) Calderón-Zygmund operators in the sense of the associated space of homogeneous type, and hence their mapping properties follow from the general theory. Our proofs rely on an explicit formula for the Jacobi-Poisson kernel, which we derive from a product formula for Jacobi polynomials.
This is an extended abstract of a lecture held at the Conference ``Fourier and Radon transformations on symmetric spaces'' in honor of Professor S. Helgason's 65th birthday, Roskilde, Denmark, Sept. 10--12, 1992.
We develop a theory of Darboux transformations for CMV matrices, canonical representations of the unitary operators. In perfect analogy with their self-adjoint version -- the Darboux transformations of Jacobi matrices -- they are equivalent to Laurent polynomial modifications of the underlying measures. We address other questions which emphasize the similarities between Darboux transformations for Jacobi and CMV matrices, like their (almost) isospectrality or the relation that they establish between the corresponding orthogonal polynomials, showing also that both transformations are connected …
This is the second part of the project `unified theory of classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable derived from the eigenvalue problems of hermitian matrices.' In a previous paper, orthogonal polynomials having Jackson integral measures were not included, since such measures cannot be obtained from single infinite dimensional hermitian matrices. Here we show that Jackson integral measures for the polynomials of the big $q$-Jacobi family are the consequence of the recovery of self-adjointness of the unbounded Jacobi matrices governing the difference equations of these polynomials…
