This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality relations for little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by columns in the connection matrices leads to an explicit form of orthogonality relations on the countable set of points for {}_3ϕ_2 and {}_3ϕ_1 polynomials, which are dual to big and little q-Jacobi polynomials, respectively. The orthogonality measure for the dual little q-Jacobi polynomials proves to be extremal, whereas the measure for the dual big q-Jacobi polynomials is not extremal.
Big $q$-Jacobi functions are eigenfunctions of a second order $q$-difference operator $L$. We study $L$ as an unbounded self-adjoint operator on an $L^2$-space of functions on $\mathbb R$ with a discrete measure. We describe explicitly the spectral decomposition of $L$ using an integral transform $\mathcal F$ with two different big $q$-Jacobi functions as a kernel, and we construct the inverse of $\mathcal F$.
The little q-Jacobi function transform depends on three parameters. An explicit expression as a sum of two very-well-poised 8W7-series is derived for the dual transmutation kernel (a kind of non-symmetric Poisson kernel) relating little q-Jacobi function transforms for different parameter sets. A product formula for the dual transmutation kernel is obtained. For the inverse transform the transmutation kernel is given as a 3\phi2-series, and a product formula as a finite sum is derived. The transmutation kernel gives rise to intertwining operators for the second order hypergeometric q-differenc…
We introduce two kinds of multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials by imposing orthogonality conditions with respect to r discrete little q-Jacobi measures on the exponential lattice q^k (k=0,1,2,3,...), where 0 < q < 1. We show that these multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials have useful q-difference properties, such as a Rodrigues formula (consisting of a product of r difference operators). Some properties of the zeros of these polynomials and some asymptotic properties will be given as well.
Matrix-valued analogues of the little q-Jacobi polynomials are introduced and studied. For the 2x2-matrix-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials explicit expressions for the orthogonality relations, Rodrigues formula, three-term recurrence relation and their relation to matrix-valued q-hypergeometric series and the scalar-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials are presented. The study is based on a matrix-valued q-difference operator, which is a q-analogue of Tirao's matrix-valued hypergeometric differential operator.
We study a new family of "classical" orthogonal polynomials, here called big -1 Jacobi polynomials, which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue problem with differential operators of Dunkl-type. These polynomials can be obtained from the big $q$-Jacobi polynomials in the limit $q \to -1$. An explicit expression of these polynomials in terms of Gauss' hypergeometric functions is found. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal on the union of two symmetric intervals of the real axis. We show that the big -1 Jacobi polynomials can be obtained from the Bannai-Ito poly…
A limit formula from q-Racah polynomials to big q-Jacobi polynomials is given which can be considered as a limit formula for orthogonal polynomials. This is extended to a multi-parameter limit with 3 parameters, also involving (q-)Hahn polynomials, little q-Jacobi polynomials and Jacobi polynomials. Also the limits from Askey-Wilson to Wilson polynomials and from q-Racah to Racah polynomials are given in a more conceptual way.
We give a detailed description of the resolution of the identity of a second order $q$-difference operator considered as an unbounded self-adjoint operator on two different Hilbert spaces. The $q$-difference operator and the two choices of Hilbert spaces naturally arise from harmonic analysis on the quantum group $SU_q(1,1)$ and $SU_q(2)$. The spectral analysis associated to $SU_q(1,1)$ leads to the big $q$-Jacobi function transform together with its Plancherel measure and inversion formula. The dual orthogonality relations give a one-parameter family of non-extremal orthogonality measures for…
The q-Heun operator of the big q-Jacobi type on the exponential grid is defined. This operator is the most general second order q-difference operator that maps polynomials of degree $n$ to polynomials of degree $n+1$. It is tridiagonal in bases made out of either q-Pochhammer or big q-Jacobi polynomials and is bilinear in the operators of the q-Hahn algebra. The extension of this algebra that includes the q-Heun operator as generator is described. Biorthogonal Pastro polynomials are shown to satisfy a generalized eigenvalue problem or equivalently to be in the kernel of a special linear pencil…
We introduce a new map from polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle to polynomials orthogonal on the real axis. This map is closely related with the theory of CMV matrices. It contains an arbitrary parameter which leads to a linear operator pencil. We show that the little and big -1 Jacobi polynomials are naturally obtained under this map from the Jacobi polynomials on the unit circle.
New convolution identities for orthogonal polynomials belonging to the $q=-1$ analog of the Askey-scheme are obtained. A specialization of the Chihara polynomials will play a central role as the eigenfunctions of a special element of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in the positive discrete series representation. Using the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, a convolution identity for the Specialized Chihara, the dual -1 Hahn and the Big -1 Jacobi polynomials is found. Using the Racah coefficients, a convolution identity for the Big -1 Jacobi and the Bannai-Ito polynomials is found. Finally…
From Koornwinder's interpretation of big $q$-Legendre polynomials as spherical elements on the quantum $SU(2)$ group an addition formula is derived for the big $q$-Legendre polynomial. The formula involves Al-Salam--Carlitz polynomials, little $q$-Jacobi polynomials and dual $q$-Krawtchouk polynomials. For the little $q$-ultraspherical polynomials a product formula in terms of a big $q$-Legendre polynomial follows by $q$-integration. The addition and product formula for the Legendre polynomials are obtained when $q$ tends to 1.
We apply the Pade technique to find rational approximations to % \[h^{\pm}(q_1,q_2)=\sum_{k=1}^\infty\frac{\q_1^k}{1\pm \q_2^k}, 0<q_1,q_2<1, q_1\in\mathbb{Q}, q_2=1/p_2, p_2\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{1\}.\] % A separate section is dedicated to the special case $q_i=q^{r_i}, r_i\in\mathbb{N}, q=1/p, p\in\mathbb{N}\setminus\{1\}$. In this construction we make use of little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. Our rational approximations are good enough to prove the irrationality of $h^{\pm}(q_1,q_2)$ and give an upper bound for the irrationality measure.
A two-variable generalization of the Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials is introduced and characterized. These bivariate polynomials are constructed as a coupled product of two univariate Big $-1$ Jacobi polynomials. Their orthogonality measure is obtained. Their bispectral properties (eigenvalue equations and recurrence relations) are determined through a limiting process from the two-variable Big $q$-Jacobi polynomials of Lewanowicz and Woźny. An alternative derivation of the weight function using Pearson-type equations is presented.
We show how one can use Hermite-Padé approximation and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials to construct rational approximants for $ζ_q(2)$. These numbers are $q$-analogues of the well known $ζ(2)$. Here $q=\frac{1}{p}$, with $p$ an integer greater than one. These approximants are good enough to show the irrationality of $ζ_q(2)$ and they allow us to calculate an upper bound for its measure of irrationality: $μ(ζ_q(2))\leq 10π^2/(5π^2-24) \approx 3.8936$. This is sharper than the upper bound given by Zudilin (\textit{On the irrationality measure for a $q$-analogue of $ζ(2)$}, Mat. Sb. \textbf{193} (2…
The main result of the paper is a construction of a five-parameter family of new bases in the algebra of symmetric functions. These bases are inhomogeneous and share many properties of systems of orthogonal polynomials on an interval of the real line. This means, in particular, that the algebra of symmetric functions is embedded into the algebra of continuous functions on a certain compact space Omega, and under this realization, our bases turn into orthogonal bases of weighted Hilbert spaces corresponding to certain probability measures on Omega. These measures are of independent interest ---…
We study a family of orthogonal polynomials which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue equation involving a third order differential operator of Dunkl-type. The orthogonality measure of these polynomials consists in the continuous measure of the little -1 Jacobi polynomials to which is added an arbitrary mass located at the point $x=0$, the middle of the orthogonality interval. This provides the first nontrivial example of Krall-type polynomials with a point mass inside the orthogonality interval. These polynomials can be obtained by a Geronimus transform of the litt…
The tensor product of a positive and a negative discrete series representation of the quantum algebra U_q(su(1,1)) decomposes as a direct integral over the principal unitary series representations. Discrete terms can appear, and these terms are a finite number of discrete series representations, or one complementary series representation. From the interpretation as overlap coefficients of little q-Jacobi functions and Al-Salam and Chihara polynomials in base q and base q^{-1}, two closely related bilinear summation formulas for the Al-Salam and Chihara polynomials are derived. The formulas inv…
Nonsymmetric Askey-Wilson polynomials are usually written as Laurent polynomials. We write them equivalently as 2-vector-valued symmetric Laurent polynomials. Then the Dunkl-Cherednik operator of which they are eigenfunctions, is represented as a 2x2 matrix-valued operator. As a new result made possible by this approach we obtain positive definiteness of the inner product in the orthogonality relations, under certain constraints on the parameters. A limit transition to nonsymmetric little q-Jacobi polynomials also becomes possible in this way. Nonsymmetric Jacobi polynomials are considered as …
As the fourth stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present the multi-indexed Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre) polynomials in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts defined on the semi-infinite lattice in one dimension. They are obtained, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier, from the quantum mechanical systems corresponding to the original orthogonal polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of virtual stat…
We first show how one can obtain Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials, continuous dual $q$-Hahn polynomials, and Askey--Wilson polynomials from the little $q$-Laguerre and the little $q$-Jacobi polynomials by using special transformations. This procedure is then extended to obtain multiple Askey--Wilson, multiple continuous dual $q$-Hahn, and multiple Al-Salam--Chihara polynomials from the multiple little $q$-Laguerre and the multiple little $q$-Jacobi polynomials.
The q-Laguerre polynomials correspond to an indetermined moment problem. For explicit discrete non-N-extremal measures corresponding to Ramanujan's ${}_1ψ_1$-summation we complement the orthogonal q-Laguerre polynomials into an explicit orthogonal basis for the corresponding L^2-space. The dual orthogonal system consists of so-called big q-Bessel functions, which can be obtained as a rigorous limit of the orthogonal system of big q-Jacobi polynomials. Interpretations on the SU(1,1) and E(2) quantum groups are discussed.
We find all polynomials solutions $P_n(x)$ of the abstract "hypergeometric" equation $L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$, where $L$ is a linear operator sending any polynomial of degree $n$ to a polynomial of the same degree with the property that $L$ is two-diagonal in the monomial basis, i.e. $L x^n = λ_n x^n + μ_n x^{n-1}$ with arbitrary nonzero coefficients $λ_n, μ_n$ . Under obvious nondegenerate conditions, the polynomial eigensolutions $L P_n(x) = λ_n P_n(x)$ are unique. The main result of the paper is a classification of all {\it orthogonal} polynomials $P_n(x)$ of such type, i.e. $P_n(x)$ are ass…
In this paper, we consider a natural extension of several results related to Krall-type polynomials introducing a modification of a $q$-classical linear functional via the addition of one or two mass points. The limit relations between the $q$-Krall type modification of big $q$-Jacobi, little $q$-Jacobi, big $q$-Laguerre, and other families of the $q$-Hahn tableau are established.
We illustrate how Jordan algebras can provide a framework for the interpretation of certain classes of orthogonal polynomials. The big -1 Jacobi polynomials are eigenfunctions of a first order operator of Dunkl type. We consider an algebra that has this operator (up to constants) as one of its three generators and whose defining relations are given in terms of anticommutators. It is a special case of the Askey-Wilson algebra AW(3). We show how the structure and recurrence relations of the big -1 Jacobi polynomials are obtained from the representations of this algebra. We also present ladder op…
A general scheme for tridiagonalising differential, difference or q-difference operators using orthogonal polynomials is described. From the tridiagonal form the spectral decomposition can be described in terms of the orthogonality measure of generally different orthogonal polynomials. Three examples are worked out: (1) related to Jacobi and Wilson polynomials for a second order differential operator, (2) related to little q-Jacobi polynomials and Askey-Wilson polynomials for a bounded second order q-difference operator, (3) related to little q-Jacobi polynomials for an unbounded second order …
Given a continuous function $f: {\mathbb R}\to {\mathbb R}$ we denote the so-called "big Lip" and "little lip" functions by $ {\mathrm {Lip}} f$ and $ {\mathrm {lip}} f$ respectively}. In this paper we are interested in the following question. Given a set $E {\subset} {\mathbb R}$ is it possible to find a continuous function $f$ such that $ {\mathrm {lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E$ or $ {\mathrm {Lip}} f=\mathbf{1}_E$? For monotone continuous functions we provide the rather straightforward answer. For arbitrary continuous functions the answer is much more difficult to find. We introduce the concept of u…
In this paper, we consider the second-order differential expression \ell [y](x)=(1-x^2)(-(y'(x))'+k(1-x^2)^(-1)y(x))(x\in(-1,1)). This is the Jacobi differential expression with non-classical parameters α = β= -1 in contrast to the classical case when α, β > -1. For fixed k \geq 0 and appropriate values of the spectral parameter λ, the equation \ell[y]=λy has, as in the classical case, a sequence of (Jacobi) polynomial solutions {P_{n}^{(-1,-1)}}_{n=0}^{\infty}. These Jacobi polynomial solutions of degree \geq 2 form a complete orthogonal set in the Hilbert space L^2((-1,1);(1-x^2)^(-1). Unlik…
For little q-Jacobi polynomials and q-Hahn polynomials we give particular q-hypergeometric series representations in which the termwise q=0 limit can be taken. When rewritten in matrix form, these series representations can be viewed as LU factorizations. We develop a general theory of LU factorizations related to complete systems of orthogonal polynomials with discrete orthogonality relations which admit a dual system of orthogonal polynomials. For the q=0 orthogonal limit functions we discuss interpretations on p-adic spaces. In the little 0-Jacobi case we also discuss product formulas.
