Banded bounded matrices, which represent non normal operators, of oscillatory type that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization are considered. To motivate the relevance of the oscillatory character the Favard theorem for Jacobi matrices is revisited and it is shown that after an adequate shift of the Jacobi matrix one gets an oscillatory matrix. In this work we present a spectral theorem for this type of operators and show how the theory of multiple orthogonal polynomials apply.
We consider boundary conditions of self-adjoint banded Toeplitz matrices. We ask if boundary conditions exist for banded self-adjoint Toeplitz matrices which satisfy operator inequalities of Dirichlet-Neumann bracketing type. For a special class of banded Toeplitz matrices including integer powers of the discrete Laplacian we find such boundary conditions. Moreover, for this class we give a lower bound on the spectral gap above the lowest eigenvalue.
Spectral and factorization properties of oscillatory matrices leads to a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded matrices, that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization, in terms of sequences of mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set positive Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures. A mixed multiple Gauss quadrature formula with corresponding degrees of precision is given.
We study the limiting eigenvalue distribution of $n\times n$ banded Toeplitz matrices as $n\to \infty$. From classical results of Schmidt-Spitzer and Hirschman it is known that the eigenvalues accumulate on a special curve in the complex plane and the normalized eigenvalue counting measure converges weakly to a measure on this curve as $n\to\infty$. In this paper, we characterize the limiting measure in terms of an equilibrium problem. The limiting measure is one component of the unique vector of measures that minimes an energy functional defined on admissible vectors of measures. In addition,…
We consider banded block Toeplitz matrices $T_n$ with $n$ block rows and columns. We show that under certain technical assumptions, the normalized eigenvalue counting measure of $T_n$ for $n\to\infty$ weakly converges to one component of the unique vector of measures that minimizes a certain energy functional. In this way we generalize a recent result of Duits and Kuijlaars for the scalar case. Along the way we also obtain an equilibrium problem associated to an arbitrary algebraic curve, not necessarily related to a block Toeplitz matrix. For banded block Toeplitz matrices, there are several …
Recently a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization was presented. In this paper conditions, in terms of continued fractions, for an oscillatory tetradiagonal Hessenberg matrix to have such positive bidiagonal factorization are found. Oscillatory tetradiagonal Toeplitz matrices are taken as a case study of matrix that admits a positive bidiagonal factorization. Moreover, it is proved that oscillatory banded Hessenberg matrices are organized in rays, with the origin of the ray not having the positive bidiagonal factoriza…
A spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded lower Hessenberg matrices that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization is found. The large knowledge on the spectral and factorization properties of oscillatory matrices leads to this spectral Favard theorem in terms of sequences of multiple orthogonal polynomials of types I and II with respect to a set of positive Lebesgue-Stieltjes~measures. Also a multiple Gauss quadrature is proven and corresponding degrees of precision are found. This spectral Favard theorem is applied to Markov chains with $(p+2)$-diagonal transition matrices, i.e. beyond bi…
We study Jacobi matrices on trees whose coefficients are generated by multiple orthogonal polynomials. Hilbert space decomposition into an orthogonal sum of cyclic subspaces is obtained. For each subspace, we find generators and the generalized eigenfunctions written in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. The spectrum and its spectral type are studied for large classes of orthogonality measures.
We introduce and investigate a class of complex semi-infinite banded Toeplitz matrices satisfying the condition that the spectra of their principal submatrices accumulate onto a real interval when the size of the submatrix grows to $\infty$. We prove that a banded Toeplitz matrix belongs to this class if and only if its symbol has real values on a Jordan curve located in $\mathbb{C}\setminus\{0\}$. Surprisingly, it turns out that, if such a Jordan curve is present, the spectra of all the submatrices have to be real. The latter claim is also proven for matrices given by a more general symbol. F…
It is well known that Sobolev-type orthogonal polynomials with respect to measures supported on the real line satisfy higher-order recurrence relations and these can be expressed as a (2N+1)-banded symmetric semi-infinite matrix. In this paper we state the connection between these (2N+1)-banded matrices and the Jacobi matrices associated with the three-term recurrence relation satisfied by the standard sequence of orthonormal polynomials with respect to the 2-iterated Christoffel transformation of the measure.
We review properties of q-orthogonal polynomials, related to their orthogonality, duality and connection with the theory of symmetric (self-adjoint) operators, represented by a Jacobi matrix. In particular, we show how one can naturally interpret the duality of families of q-polynomials, orthogonal on countable sets of points. In order to obtain orthogonality relations for dual sets of polynomials, it is proposed to use two symmetric (self-adjoint) operators, representable (in some distinct bases) by Jacobi matrices. This approach is applied to several pairs of dual families of q-polynomials, …
This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality…
We introduce and develop a theory of orthogonality with respect to Sobolev inner products on the real line for sequences of functions with a tridiagonal, skew-Hermitian differentiation matrix. While a theory of such L2-orthogonal systems is well established, Sobolev orthogonality requires new concepts and their analysis. We characterise such systems completely as appropriately weighed Fourier transforms of orthogonal polynomials and present a number of illustrative examples, inclusive of a Sobolev-orthogonal system whose leading N coefficients can be computed in $\mathcal{O}(N \log N)$ operati…
We give formulas for the density of the measure of orthogonality for orthonormal polynomials with unbounded recurrence coefficients. The formulas involve limits of appropriately scaled Turán determinants or Christoffel functions. Exact asymptotics of the polynomials and numerical examples are also provided.
We study the relation between certain non-degenerate lower Hessenberg infinite matrices $\mathcal{G}$ and the existence of sequences of orthogonal polynomials with respect to Sobolev inner products. In other words, we extend the well-known Favard theorem for Sobolev orthogonality. We characterize the structure of the matrix $\mathcal{G}$ and the associated matrix of formal moments $\mathcal{M}_{\mathcal{G}}$ in terms of certain matrix operators.
We show that the average characteristic polynomial P_n(z) = E [\det(zI-M)] of the random Hermitian matrix ensemble Z_n^{-1} \exp(-Tr(V(M)-AM))dM is characterized by multiple orthogonality conditions that depend on the eigenvalues of the external source A. For each eigenvalue a_j of A, there is a weight and P_n has n_j orthogonality conditions with respect to this weight, if n_j is the multiplicity of a_j. The eigenvalue correlation functions have determinantal form, as shown by Zinn-Justin. Here we give a different expression for the kernel. We derive a Christoffel-Darboux formula in case A ha…
