We show that the average characteristic polynomial P_n(z) = E [\det(zI-M)] of the random Hermitian matrix ensemble Z_n^{-1} \exp(-Tr(V(M)-AM))dM is characterized by multiple orthogonality conditions that depend on the eigenvalues of the external source A. For each eigenvalue a_j of A, there is a weight and P_n has n_j orthogonality conditions with respect to this weight, if n_j is the multiplicity of a_j. The eigenvalue correlation functions have determinantal form, as shown by Zinn-Justin. Here we give a different expression for the kernel. We derive a Christoffel-Darboux formula in case A has two distinct eigenvalues, which leads to a compact formula in terms of a Riemann-Hilbert problem that is satisfied by multiple orthogonal polynomials.
A novel method to obtain parametrizations of complex inverse orthogonal matrices is provided. These matrices are natural generalizations of complex Hadamard matrices which depend on non zero complex parameters. The method we use is via doubling the size of inverse complex conference matrices. When the free parameters take values on the unit circle the inverse orthogonal matrices transform into complex Hadamard matrices, and in this way we find new parametrizations of Hadamard matrices for dimensions n= 8,10,12.
Spectral and factorization properties of oscillatory matrices leads to a spectral Favard theorem for bounded banded matrices, that admit a positive bidiagonal factorization, in terms of sequences of mixed multiple orthogonal polynomials with respect to a set positive Lebesgue-Stieltjes measures. A mixed multiple Gauss quadrature formula with corresponding degrees of precision is given.
A unified theory of orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable is presented through the eigenvalue problem of hermitian matrices of finite or infinite dimensions. It can be considered as a matrix version of exactly solvable Schrödinger equations. The hermitian matrices (factorisable Hamiltonians) are real symmetric tri-diagonal (Jacobi) matrices corresponding to second order difference equations. By solving the eigenvalue problem in two different ways, the duality relation of the eigenpolynomials and their dual polynomials is explicitly established. Through the techniques of exact Heisenber…
Particular class of skew orthogonal polynomials are introduced and investigated, which possess Laurent symmetry. They are also shown to appear as eigenfunctions of symplectic generalized eigenvalue problems. The modification of these polynomials gives some symplectic eigenvalue problem and the corresponding matrix is shown to be equivalent to butterfly matrix, which is a canonical form of symplectic matrices.
We prove edge universality of local eigenvalue statistics for orthogonal invariant matrix models with real analytic potentials and one interval limiting spectrum. Our starting point is the result of \cite{S:08} on the representation of the reproducing matrix kernels of orthogonal ensembles in terms of scalar reproducing kernel of corresponding unitary ensemble.
We present an informal review of results on asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials, stressing their spectral aspects and similarity in two cases considered. They are polynomials orthonormal on a finite union of disjoint intervals with respect to the Szego weight and polynomials orthonormal on R with respect to varying weights and having the same union of intervals as the set of oscillations of asymptotics. In both cases we construct double infinite Jacobi matrices with generically quasiperiodic coefficients and show that each of them is an isospectral deformation of another. Related results on …
We consider a set of measures on the real line and the corresponding system of multiple orthogonal polynomials (MOPs) of the first and second type. Under some very mild assumptions, which are satisfied by Angelesco systems, we define self-adjoint Jacobi matrices on certain rooted trees. We express their Green's functions and the matrix elements in terms of MOPs. This provides a generalization of the well-known connection between the theory of polynomials orthogonal on the real line and Jacobi matrices on $\mathbb{Z}_+$ to higher dimension. We illustrate importance of this connection by proving…
Several recently discovered properties of multiple families of special polynomials (some orthogonal and some not) that satisfy certain differential, difference or q-difference equations are reviewed. A general method of construction of isospectral matrices defined in terms of the zeros of such polynomials is discussed. The method involves reduction of certain partial differential, differential difference and differential q-difference equations to systems of ordinary differential equations and their subsequent linearization about the zeros of polynomials in question. Via this process, solvable …
Using asymptotics of Toeplitz+Hankel determinants, we establish formulae for the asymptotics of the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices, as the matrix-size tends to infinity. Our results are analogous to those that Fahs obtained for random unitary matrices in [14]. A key feature of the formulae we derive is that the phase transitions in the moments of moments are seen to depend on the symmetry group in question in a significant way.
This publication is an exercise which extends to two variables the Christoffel's construction of orthogonal polynomials for potentials of one variable with external sources. We generalize the construction to biorthogonal polynomials. We also introduce generalized Schur polynomials as a set of orthogonal, symmetric, non homogeneous polynomials of several variables, attached to Young tableaux.
We prove universality of local eigenvalue statistics in the bulk of the spectrum for orthogonal invariant matrix models with real analytic potentials with one interval limiting spectrum. Our starting point is the Tracy-Widom formula for the matrix reproducing kernel. The key idea of the proof is to represent the differentiation operator matrix written in the basis of orthogonal polynomials as a product of a positive Toeplitz matrix and a two diagonal skew symmetric Toeplitz matrix.
This is the second part of the project `unified theory of classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable derived from the eigenvalue problems of hermitian matrices.' In a previous paper, orthogonal polynomials having Jackson integral measures were not included, since such measures cannot be obtained from single infinite dimensional hermitian matrices. Here we show that Jackson integral measures for the polynomials of the big $q$-Jacobi family are the consequence of the recovery of self-adjointness of the unbounded Jacobi matrices governing the difference equations of these polynomials…
In these lecture notes we present some connections between random matrices, the asymmetric exclusion process, random tilings. These three apparently unrelated objects have (sometimes) a similar mathematical structure, an interlacing structure, and the correlation functions are given in terms of a kernel. In the basic examples, the kernel is expressed in terms of orthogonal polynomials.
We consider mixed type multiple orthogonal polynomials associated with a system of weight functions consisting of two vectors. One vector is defined in terms of scaled modified Bessel function of the first kind $I_μ$ and $I_{μ+1}$, the other vector is defined in terms of scaled modified Bessel function of the second kind $K_ν$ and $K_{ν+1}$. We show that the corresponding mixed type multiple orthogonal polynomials exist. For the special case that each multi-index is on or close to the diagonal, basic properties of the polynomials and their linear forms are investigated, which include explicit …
Several well-known results from the random matrix theory, such as Wigner's law and the Marchenko--Pastur law, can be interpreted (and proved) in terms of non-backtracking walks on a certain graph. Orthogonal polynomials with respect to the limiting spectral measure play a role in this approach.
An exact calculation of the eigenvalue statistics of truncated random Haar distributed real orthogonal matrices has recently been carried out by Khoruzhenko, Sommers and Zyczkowski. We further develop this calculation, and use it to deduce a Pfaffian form of the correlations for the zeros of the limiting Kac random polynomial. This contrasts with the forms known from previous studies of the real zeros (a multidimensional Gaussian integral with the integrand multiplied by the absolute values of the variables) and the complex zeros (a Hafnian).
There is a vast theory of the asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a measure on $\mathbb{R}$ and its applications to Jacobi matrices. That theory has an obvious affine invariance and a very special role for $\infty$. We extend aspects of this theory in the setting of rational functions with poles on $\overline{\mathbb{R}} = \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$, obtaining a formulation which allows multiple poles and proving an invariance with respect to $\overline{\mathbb{R}}$-preserving Möbius transformations. We obtain a characterization of Stahl--Totik regularity of a GMP ma…
Orthogonal - unitary and symplectic - unitary crossover ensembles of random matrices are relevant in many contexts, especially in the study of time reversal symmetry breaking in quantum chaotic systems. Using skew-orthogonal polynomials we show that the same generic form of n-level correlation functions are obtained for the Jacobi family of crossover ensembles, including the Laguerre and Gaussian cases. For large matrices we find universal forms of unfolded correlation functions when expressed in terms of a rescaled transition parameter with arbitrary initial level density.
Statistical properties of non--symmetric real random matrices of size $M$, obtained as truncations of random orthogonal $N\times N$ matrices are investigated. We derive an exact formula for the density of eigenvalues which consists of two components: finite fraction of eigenvalues are real, while the remaining part of the spectrum is located inside the unit disk symmetrically with respect to the real axis. In the case of strong non--orthogonality, $M/N=$const, the behavior typical to real Ginibre ensemble is found. In the case $M=N-L$ with fixed $L$, a universal distribution of resonance width…
We establish a new connection between moments of $n \times n$ random matrices $X_n$ and hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials. Specifically, we consider moments $\mathbb{E}\mathrm{Tr} X_n^{-s}$ as a function of the complex variable $s \in \mathbb{C}$, whose analytic structure we describe completely. We discover several remarkable features, including a reflection symmetry (or functional equation), zeros on a critical line in the complex plane, and orthogonality relations. An application of the theory resolves part of an integrality conjecture of Cunden et al. [F. D. Cunden, F. Mezzadri, N. J. S…
We establish formulae for the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices in terms of certain lattice point count problems. This allows us to establish asymptotic formulae when the matrix-size tends to infinity in terms of the volumes of certain regions involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints. The results we find differ from those in the unitary case considered previously
The circulant real and complex matrices are used to find new real and complex conference matrices. With them we construct Sylvester inverse orthogonal matrices by doubling the size of inverse complex conference matrices. When the free parameters take values on the unit circle the inverse orthogonal matrices transform into complex Hadamard matrices. The method is used for $n=6$ conference matrices and in this way we find new parametrisations of Hadamard matrices for dimension $ n=12$.
We find the transformations from the basis of the hydrogen atom of n-dimensions to the basis of the harmonic oscillator of N=2(n-1) dimensions using the Cayley transformation and the Hurwitz matrices. We prove that the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian ∆n are also eigenfunctions of the Laplacien ∆N for n=1, 3, 5 and 9. A new parameterization of the transformation R8->R5 is derived. This research leads us first to a new class of spherical functions of the classical groups we call it the bispherical harmonic functions. Secondly: the development of Hurwitz's matrix in terms of adjoint r…
A LG-WKB and Turning point theory is developed for three term recurrence formulas associated with monotonic recurrence coefficients. This is used to find strong asymptotics for certain classical orthogonal polynomials including Wilson polynomials.
Akemann, Ipsen and Kieburg recently showed that the squared singular values of products of M rectangular random matrices with independent complex Gaussian entries are distributed according to a determinantal point process with a correlation kernel that can be expressed in terms of Meijer G-functions. We show that this point process can be interpreted as a multiple orthogonal polynomial ensemble. We give integral representations for the relevant multiple orthogonal polynomials and a new double contour integral for the correlation kernel, which allows us to find its scaling limits at the origin …
A truncation of a Haar distributed orthogonal random matrix gives rise to a matrix whose eigenvalues are either real or complex conjugate pairs, and are supported within the closed unit disk. This is also true for a product $P_m$ of $m$ independent truncated orthogonal random matrices. One of most basic questions for such asymmetric matrices is to ask for the number of real eigenvalues. In this paper, we will exploit the fact that the eigenvalues of $P_m$ form a Pfaffian point process to obtain an explicit determinant expression for the probability of finding any given number of real eigenvalu…
Racah matrices and higher $j$-symbols are used in description of braiding properties of conformal blocks and in construction of knot polynomials. However, in complicated cases the logic is actually inverted: they are much better deduced from these applications than from the basic representation theory. Following the recent proposal of arXiv:1612.00422, we obtain the exclusive Racah matrix $\bar S$ for the currently-front-line case of representation $R=[3,1]$ with non-trivial multiplicities, where it is actually operator valued, i.e. depends on the choice of basises in the intertwiner spaces. E…
We obtain uniform asymptotics for polynomials orthogonal on a fixed and varying arc of the unit circle with a positive analytic weight function. We also complete the proof of the large $s$ asymptotic expansion for the Fredholm determinant with the kernel $\sin z/(πz)$ on the interval $[0,s]$, verifying a conjecture of Dyson for the constant term in the expansion. In the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrices, this determinant describes the probability for an interval of length $s$ in the bulk scaling limit to be free from the eigenvalues.
We investigate the statistical properties of $C=uvu^{-1}v^{-1}$, when $u$ and $v$ are independent random matrices, uniformly distributed with respect to the Haar measure of the groups $U(N)$ and $O(N)$. An exact formula is derived for the average value of power sum symmetric functions of $C$, and also for products of the matrix elements of $C$, similar to Weingarten functions. The density of eigenvalues of $C$ is shown to become constant in the large-$N$ limit, and the first $N^{-1}$ correction is found.
We present a five-step method for the calculation of eigenvalue correlation functions for various ensembles of real random matrices, based upon the method of (skew-) orthogonal polynomials. This scheme systematises existing methods and also involves some new techniques. The ensembles considered are: the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), the real Ginibre ensemble, ensembles of partially symmetric real Gaussian matrices, the real spherical ensemble (of matrices $A^{-1}B$), and the real anti-spherical ensemble (consisting of truncated real orthogonal matrices). Particular emphasis is paid to th…
The probability that all eigenvalues of a product of $m$ independent $N \times N$ sub-blocks of a Haar distributed random real orthogonal matrix of size $(L_i+N) \times (L_i+N)$, $(i=1,\dots,m)$ are real is calculated as a multi-dimensional integral, and as a determinant. Both involve Meijer G-functions. Evaluation formulae of the latter, based on a recursive scheme, allow it to be proved that for any $m$ and with each $L_i$ even the probability is a rational number. The formulae furthermore provide for explicit computation in small order cases.
Let $O(2n+\ell)$ be the group of orthogonal matrices of size $\left(2n+\ell\right)\times \left(2n+\ell\right)$ equipped with the probability distribution given by normalized Haar measure. We study the probability \begin{equation*} p_{2n}^{\left(\ell\right)} = \mathbb{P}\left[M_{2n} \, \mbox{has no real eigenvalues}\right], \end{equation*} where $M_{2n}$ is the $2n\times 2n$ left top minor of a $(2n+\ell)\times(2n+\ell)$ orthogonal matrix. We prove that this probability is given in terms of a determinant identity minus a weighted Hankel matrix of size $n\times n$ that depends on the truncation …
