We investigate the statistical properties of $C=uvu^{-1}v^{-1}$, when $u$ and $v$ are independent random matrices, uniformly distributed with respect to the Haar measure of the groups $U(N)$ and $O(N)$. An exact formula is derived for the average value of power sum symmetric functions of $C$, and also for products of the matrix elements of $C$, similar to Weingarten functions. The density of eigenvalues of $C$ is shown to become constant in the large-$N$ limit, and the first $N^{-1}$ correction is found.
We present an improved version of commutator methods for unitary operators under a weak regularity condition. Once applied to a unitary operator, the method typically leads to the absence of singularly continuous spectrum and to the local finiteness of point spectrum. Large families of locally smooth operators are also exhibited. Half of the paper is dedicated to applications, and a special emphasize is put on the study of cocycles over irrational rotations. It is apparently the first time that commutator methods are applied in the context of rotation algebras, for the study of their generator…
We present new criteria, based on commutator methods, for the strong mixing property of discrete flows $\{U^N\}_{N\in\mathbb Z}$ and continuous flows $\{{\rm e}^{-itH}\}_{t\in\mathbb R}$ induced by unitary operators $U$ and self-adjoint operators $H$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$. Our approach put into evidence a general definition for the topological degree of the curves $N\mapsto U^N$ and $t\mapsto{\rm e}^{-itH}$ in the unitary group of $\mathcal H$. Among other examples, our results apply to skew products of compact Lie groups, time changes of horocycle flows and adjacency operators on gr…
We present a new criterion, based on commutator methods, for the strong mixing property of unitary representations of topological groups equipped with a proper length function. Our result generalises and unifies recent results on the strong mixing property of discrete flows $\{U^N\}_{N\in\mathbb Z}$ and continuous flows $\{{\rm e}^{-itH}\}_{t\in\mathbb R}$ induced by unitary operators $U$ and self-adjoint operators $H$ in a Hilbert space. As an application, we present a short alternative proof (not using convolutions) of the strong mixing property of the left regular representation of $σ$-comp…
The families of quasi-simple or Cayley--Klein algebras associated to antihermitian matrices over R, C and H are described in a unified framework. These three families include simple and non-simple real Lie algebras which can be obtained by contracting the pseudo-orthogonal algebras so(p,q) of the Cartan series $B_l$ and $D_l$, the special pseudo-unitary algebras su(p,q) in the series $A_l$, and the quaternionic pseudo-unitary algebras sq(p,q) in the series $C_l$. This approach allows to study many properties for all these Lie algebras simultaneously. In particular their non-trivial central ext…
Consider fixed and bounded trace Gaussian orthogonal, unitary and symplectic ensembles, closely related to Gaussian ensembles without any constraint. For three restricted trace Gaussian ensembles, we prove universal limits of correlation functions at zero and at the edge of the spectrum edge. In addition, by using the universal result in the bulk for fixed trace Gaussian unitary ensemble, which has been obtained by G$\ddot{o}$tze and Gordin, we also prove universal limits of correlation functions for bounded trace Gaussian unitary ensemble.
Recently, the supersymmetry method was extended from Gaussian ensembles to arbitrary unitarily invariant matrix ensembles by generalizing the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Here, we complete this extension by including arbitrary orthogonally and unitary-symplectically invariant matrix ensembles. The results are equivalent to, but the approach is different from the superbosonization formula. We express our results in a unifying way. We also give explicit expressions for all one-point functions and discuss features of the higher order correlations.
Orthogonal - unitary and symplectic - unitary crossover ensembles of random matrices are relevant in many contexts, especially in the study of time reversal symmetry breaking in quantum chaotic systems. Using skew-orthogonal polynomials we show that the same generic form of n-level correlation functions are obtained for the Jacobi family of crossover ensembles, including the Laguerre and Gaussian cases. For large matrices we find universal forms of unfolded correlation functions when expressed in terms of a rescaled transition parameter with arbitrary initial level density.
We study bipartite unitary operators which stay invariant under the local actions of diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups. We investigate structural properties of these operators, arguing that the diagonal symmetry makes them suitable for analytical study. As a first application, we construct large new families of dual unitary gates in arbitrary finite dimensions, which are important toy models for entanglement spreading in quantum circuits. We then analyze the non-local nature of these invariant operators, both in discrete (operator Schmidt rank) and continuous (entangling power) settings. …
The matrix integral has many applications in diverse fields. This review article begins by presenting detailed key background knowledge about matrix integral. Then the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups are computed, respectively. As a unification, we present Mcdonald's volume formula for a compact Lie group. With this volume formula, one can easily derives the volumes of orthogonal groups and unitary groups. Applications are also presented as well. Specifically, The volume of the set of mixed quantum states is computed by using the volume of unitary group. The volume of a metric …
We study self-duality for interacting particle systems, where the particles move as continuous time random walkers having either exclusion interaction or inclusion interaction. We show that orthogonal self-dualities arise from unitary symmetries of the Markov generator. For these symmetries we provide two equivalent expressions that are related by the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. The first expression is the exponential of an anti Hermitian operator and thus is unitary by inspection; the second expression is factorized into three terms and is proved to be unitary by using generating functi…
We present a new technique to obtain polynomial decay estimates for the matrix coefficients of unitary operators. Our approach, based on commutator methods, applies to nets of unitary operators, unitary representations of topological groups, and unitary operators given by the evolution group of a self-adjoint operator or by powers of a unitary operator. Our results are illustrated with a wide range of examples in quantum mechanics and dynamical systems, as for instance Schrödinger operators, Dirac operators, quantum waveguides, horocycle flows, adjacency matrices, Jacobi matrices, quantum walk…
Correlation functions for matrix ensembles with orthogonal and unitarysymplectic rotation symmetry are more complicated to calculate than in the unitary case. The supersymmetry method and the orthogonal polynomials are two techniques to tackle this task. Recently, we presented a new method to average ratios of characteristic polynomials over matrix ensembles invariant under the unitary group. Here, we extend this approach to ensembles with orthogonal and unitary-symplectic rotation symmetry. We show that Pfaffian structures can be derived for a wide class of orthogonal and unitary-symplectic r…
We revisit the work of the first named author and using simpler algebraic arguments we calculate integrals of polynomial functions with respect to the Haar measure on the unitary group U(d). The previous result provided exact formulas only for 2d bigger than the degree of the integrated polynomial and we show that these formulas remain valid for all values of d. Also, we consider the integrals of polynomial functions on the orthogonal group O(d) and the symplectic group Sp(d). We obtain an exact character expansion and the asymptotic behavior for large d. Thus we can show the asymptotic freene…
We present a suitable framework for the definition of quantum time delay in terms of sojourn times for unitary operators in a two-Hilbert spaces setting. We prove that this time delay defined in terms of sojourn times (time-dependent definition) exists and coincides with the expectation value of a unitary analogue of the Eisenbud-Wigner time delay operator (time-independent definition). Our proofs rely on a new summation formula relating localisation operators to time operators and on various tools from functional analysis such as Mackey's imprimititvity theorem, Trotter-Kato Formula and commu…
A parametrization of 3x3 unitary matrices is presented. This mathematical approach is inspired on polarization algebra and is formulated through the identification of a set of three orthonormal three-dimensional Jones vectors representing the respective pure polarization states. This approach leads to the representation of a 3x3 unitary matrix as an orthogonal similarity transformation of a particular type of unitary matrix that depends on six independent parameters, while the remaining three parameters correspond to the orthogonal matrix of the said transformation. The results obtained are ap…
We give a proof of universality in the bulk of spectrum of unitary matrix models, assuming that the potential is globally $C^{2}$ and locally $C^{3}$ function. The proof is based on the determinant formulas for correlation functions in terms of polynomials orthogonal on the unit circle. We do not use asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials. We obtain the $sin$-kernel as a unique solution of a certain non-linear integro-differential equation.
The unitary Wilson random matrix theory is an interpolation between the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble and the Gaussian unitary ensemble. This new way of interpolation is also reflected in the orthogonal polynomials corresponding to such a random matrix ensemble. Although the chiral Gaussian unitary ensemble as well as the Gaussian unitary ensemble are associated to the Dyson index $β=2$ the intermediate ensembles exhibit a mixing of orthogonal polynomials and skew-orthogonal polynomials. We consider the Hermitian as well as the non-Hermitian Wilson random matrix and derive the corresponding…
We prove universality at the edge of the spectrum for unitary (beta=2), orthogonal (beta=1) and symplectic (beta=4) ensembles of random matrices in the scaling limit for a class of weights w(x)=exp(-V(x)) where V is a polynomial, V(x)=kappa_{2m}x^{2m}+..., kappa_{2m}>0. The precise statement of our results is given in Theorem 1.1 and Corollaries 1.2, 1.3 below. For a proof of universality in the bulk of the spectrum, for the same class of weights, for unitary ensembles see [DKMVZ2], and for orthogonal and symplectic ensembles see [DG]. Our starting point in the unitary case is [DKMVZ2], and fo…
In a recent study we have obtained correction terms to the large N asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalue density for the Gaussian unitary and Laguerre unitary ensembles of random N by N matrices, both in the bulk and at the soft edge of the spectrum. In the present study these results are used to similarly analyze the eigenvalue density for Gaussian and Laguerre random matrix ensembles with orthogonal and symplectic symmetry. As in the case of unitary symmetry, a matching is exhibited between the asymptotic expansion of the bulk density, expanded about the edge, and the asymptotic expansion …
Factorization of an $n\times n$ unitary matrix as a product of $n$ diagonal matrices containing only phases interlaced with $n-1$ orthogonal matrices each one generated by a real vector as well as an explicit form for the Weyl factorization are found.
We analyze bipartite matrices and linear maps between matrix algebras, which are respectively, invariant and covariant, under the diagonal unitary and orthogonal groups' actions. By presenting an expansive list of examples from the literature, which includes notable entries like the Diagonal Symmetric states and the Choi-type maps, we show that this class of matrices (and maps) encompasses a wide variety of scenarios, thereby unifying their study. We examine their linear algebraic structure and investigate different notions of positivity through their convex conic manifestations. In particular…
The permanent of unitary matrices and their blocks has attracted increasing attention in quantum physics and quantum computation because of connections with the Hong-Ou-Mandel effect and the Boson Sampling problem. In that context, it would be useful to know the distribution of the permanent or other immanants for random matrices, but that seems a difficult problem. We advance this program by calculating the average of the squared modulus of a generic immanant for blocks from random matrices in the unitary group, in the orthogonal group and in the circular orthogonal ensemble. In the case of th…
These lectures provide an informal introduction into the notions and tools used to analyze statistical properties of eigenvalues of large random Hermitian matrices. After developing the general machinery of orthogonal polynomial method, we study in most detail Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) as a paradigmatic example. In particular, we discuss Plancherel-Rotach asymptotics of Hermite polynomials in various regimes and employ it in spectral analysis of the GUE. In the last part of the course we discuss general relations between orthogonal polynomials and characteristic polynomials of random mat…
The ratio of two consecutive level spacings has emerged as a very useful metric in investigating universal features exhibited by complex spectra. It does not require the knowledge of density of states and is therefore quite convenient to compute in analyzing the spectrum of a general system. The Wigner-surmise-like results for the ratio distribution are known for the invariant classes of Gaussian random matrices. However, for the crossover ensembles, which are useful in modeling systems with partially broken symmetries, corresponding results have remained unavailable so far. In this work, we d…
