We look for differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality.
In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials.
We show that these systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequence of the Jacobi inversion formula which is proved in this report.
We look for spectral type differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. These systems of equations have a unique solution which can be given explicitly in terms of Jacobi polynomials.…
In the previous paper, we reviewed the Rosenhain's paper to the Jacobi's inversion problem for the genus two hyperelliptic integral. In this paper, we review the Göpel's paper to the Jacobi's inversion problem for the genus two hyperelliptic integral.
We find all spectral type differential equations satisfied by the symmetric generalized ultraspherical polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to the classical symmetric weight function for the Jacobi polynomials together with equal mass points at both ends of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. These systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequ…
We investigate the differential equation for the Jacobi-type polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval $[-1,1]$ with respect to the classical Jacobi measure and an additional point mass at one endpoint. This scale of higher-order equations was introduced by J. and R. Koekoek in 1999 essentially by using special function methods. In this paper, a completely elementary representation of the Jacobi-type differential operator of any even order is given. This enables us to trace the orthogonality relation of the Jacobi-type polynomials back to their differential equation. Moreover, we establ…
The aim of this paper is to study differential properties of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a discrete Jacobi-Sobolev bilinear form with mass point at $-1$ and/or $+1$. In particular, we construct the orthogonal polynomials using certain Casorati determinants. Using this construction, we prove that when the Jacobi parameters $α$ and $β$ are nonnegative integers the Jacobi-Sobolev orthogonal polynomials are eigenfunctions of a differential operator of finite order (which will be explicitly constructed). Moreover, the order of this differential operator is explicitly computed in terms of…
In this manuscript we study algebraic and analytic properties of the sequence of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Jacobi differential operator. A fluid dynamics model for source points location of a flow of an incompressible fluid with preassigned stagnation points is also considered.
Discrete analogs of the classical Fourier-Jacobi transform are introduced and investigated. It involves series and integrals with respect to parameters of the Gauss hypergeometric function ${}_2F_1(a+in/2,a-in/2;\ c; -x^2 ), \ x >0, n \in \mathbb{N}, a,c > 0, i $ is the imaginary unit. The corresponding inversion formulas for suitable functions and sequences in terms of these series and integrals are established.
We look for spectral type differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials, which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with two point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. We show that such a differential equation is uniquely determined and we give explicit representations for the coefficients. In case of nonzero mass points the order of this differential equation is infinite, except for nonnegative integer values of (one of) the parameters. Otherwise, the fi…
The study of the asymptotic distributions of zeros of generalized Jacobi polynomials with non real varying parameters, leads with quadratic differentials. In fact, the support of the limit measure of the root-counting measures sits on the finite critical trajectories of a related quadratic differential. In this paper, we study the trajectories of this quadratic differential, more precisely, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on the complex numbers a; b; and λ for the existence of at list one finite critical trajectory of the quadratic differential ((λ^2(z-a)(z-b))/((z^2-1)^2))dz^2.
Two main topics of this paper are asymptotic distributions of zeros of Jacobi polynomials and topology of critical trajectories of related quadratic differentials. First, we will discuss recent developments and some new results concerning the limit of the root-counting measures of these polynomials. In particular, we will show that the support of the limit measure sits on the critical trajectories of a quadratic differential of the form Q(z)dz^2=(az^2+bz+c)dz^2/(z^2-1)^2. Then we will give a complete classification, in terms of complex parameters a, b, and c, of possible topological types of c…
For a long time it has been a challenging goal to identify all orthogonal polynomial systems that occur as eigenfunctions of a linear differential equation. One of the widest classes of such eigenfunctions known so far, is given by Koornwinder's generalized Jacobi polynomials with four parameters $α,β\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$ and $M,N \ge 0$ determining the orthogonality measure on the interval $-1 \le x \le 1$. The corresponding differential equation of order $2α+2β+6$ is presented here as a linear combination of four elementary components which make the corresponding differential operator widely ac…
Motivated by the study of the asymptotic behavior of Jacobi polynomials $\left( P_{n}^{(nA,nB)}\right) _{n}$ with $A\in \mathbb C$ and $B>0$ we establish the global structure of trajectories of the related rational quadratic differential on $\mathbb C$. As a consequence, the asymptotic zero distribution (limit of the root-counting measures of $\left( P_{n}^{(nA,nB)}\right) _{n}$) is described. The support of this measure is formed by an open arc in the complex plan (critical trajectory of the aforementioned quadratic differential) that can be characterized by the symmetry property of its equil…
Let $f$ be a function on the real line. The Fourier transform inversion theorem is proved under the assumption that $f$ is absolutely continuous such that $f$ and $f'$ are Lebesgue integrable. A function $g$ is defined by $f'(t)-iwf(t)=g(t)$. This differential equation has a well known integral solution using the Heaviside step function. An elementary calculation with residues is used to write the Heaviside step function as a simple contour integral. The rest of the proof requires elementary manipulation of integrals. Hence, the Fourier transform inversion theorem is proved with very little ma…
Some weighted inequalities for the maximal operator with respect to the discrete diffusion semigroups associated with exceptional Jacobi and Dunkl-Jacobi polynomials are given. This setup allows to extend the corresponding results obtained for discrete heat semigroup recently to richer class of differential-difference operators.
The exceptional $X_{1}$-Jacobi differential expression is a second-order ordinary differential expression with rational coefficients; it was discovered by Gómez-Ullate, Kamran and Milson in 2009. In their work, they showed that there is a sequence of polynomial eigenfunctions $\left\{\widehat{P} _{n}^{(α,β)}\right\}_{n=1}^{\infty}$ called the exceptional $X_{1}$-Jacobi polynomials. There is no exceptional $X_{1}$-Jacobi polynomial of degree zero. These polynomials form a complete orthogonal set in the weighted Hilbert space $L^{2}((-1,1);\widehat{w}_{α,β}),$ where $\widehat{w}_{α,β}$ is a posi…
We set out to build a framework for self-adjoint extension theory for powers of the Jacobi differential operator that does not make use of classical deficiency elements. Instead, we rely on simpler functions that capture the impact of these elements on extensions but are defined by boundary asymptotics. This new perspective makes calculations much more accessible and allows for a more nuanced analysis of the associated domains. The maximal domain for $n$-th composition of the Jacobi operator is characterized in terms of a smoothness condition for each derivative, and the endpoint behavior of f…
We construct a large family of commutative algebras of partial differential operators invariant under rotations. These algebras are isomorphic extensions of the algebras of ordinary differential operators introduced by Grunbaum and Yakimov corresponding to Darboux transformations at one end of the spectrum of the recurrence operator for the Jacobi polynomials. The construction is based on a new proof of their results which leads to a more detailed description of the one-dimensional theory. In particular, our approach establishes a conjecture by Haine concerning the explicit characterization of…
We look for differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to the classical weight function for the Jacobi polynomials together with point masses at both endpoints. In the special symmetric case that both parameters are equal and also the two point masses are equal we find all differential equations of spectral type satisfied by these symmetric generalized ultraspherical polynomials. We show that if the point masses are positive only for nonnegative integer values of the parameter there exists exactly one differen…
This note supplements the work of Gomez-Ullate, Kamran and Milson on the X_(1)-Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal in a weighted Hilbert function space on the the interval (-1,+1) of the real line. These polynomials are generated by a second-order ordinary linear differential equation with a spectral parameter. Some additional information on the Sturm-Liouville form of this equation is given in this note, together with details of the singular differential operators generated in the weighted Hilbert function space. In particular, structured boundary conditions are given to determine the spe…
A hierarchy of matrix-valued polynomials which generalize the Jacobi polynomials is found. Defined by a Rodrigues formula, they are also products of a sequence of differential operators. Each class of polynomials is complete, satisfies a two-step recurrence relation, integral inter-relations, and quasi-orthogonality relations.
We introduce, characterise and provide a combinatorial interpretation for the so-called $q$-Jacobi-Stirling numbers. This study is motivated by their key role in the (reciprocal) expansion of any power of a second order $q$-differential operator having the $q$-classical polynomials as eigenfunctions in terms of other even order operators, which we explicitly construct in this work. The results here obtained can be viewed as the $q$-version of those given by Everitt {\it et al.} and by the first author, whilst the combinatorics of this new set of numbers is a $q$-version of the Jacobi-Stirling …
The abstract theory of boundary triples is applied to the classical Jacobi differential operator and its powers in order to obtain the Weyl $m$-function for several self-adjoint extensions with interesting boundary conditions: separated, periodic and those that yield the Friedrichs extension. These matrix-valued Nevanlinna--Herglotz $m$-functions are, to the best knowledge of the author, the first explicit examples to stem from singular higher-order differential equations. The creation of the boundary triples involves taking pieces, determined in a previous paper, of the principal and non-prin…
We derive formulas for the construction of all inequivalent Jacobian elliptic fibrations on the Kummer surface of two non-isogeneous elliptic curves from extremal rational elliptic surfaces by rational base transformations and quadratic twists. We then show that each such decomposition yields a description of the Picard-Fuchs system satisfied by the periods of the holomorphic two-form as either a tensor product of two Gauss' hypergeometric differential equations, an Appell hypergeometric system, or a GKZ differential system. As the answer must be independent of the fibration used, identities r…
We study Heun's differential equation in the case that one of the singularities is apparent. In particular we conjecture a relationship with generalized hypergeometric differential equation and establish it in some cases. We apply our results to exceptional Jacobi polynomials.
We propose a system of equations that defines Weierstrass--Jacobi's eta- and theta-constant series in a differentially closed way. This system is shown to have a direct relationship to a little-known dynamical system obtained by Jacobi. The classically known differential equations by Darboux--Halphen, Chazy, and Ramanujan are the differential consequences or reductions of these systems. The proposed system is shown to admit the Lagrangian, Hamiltonian, and Nambu formulations. We explicitly construct a pencil of nonlinear Poisson brackets and complete set of involutive conserved quantities. As …
We prove a set of general theorems that provide new nonlocal constants and first integrals for nonlinear Jacobi-type ordinary differential equations. Applications include equations of the Painleve-Gambier classification.
We study the perturbative power-series expansions of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a general tridiagonal (Jacobi) matrix of dimension d. The(small) expansion parameters are being the entries of the two diagonals of length d-1 sandwiching the principal diagonal, which gives the unperturbed spectrum. The solution is found explicitly in terms of multivariable (Horn-type) hypergeometric series of 3d-5 variables in the generic case, or 2d-3 variables for the eigenvalue growing from a corner matrix element. To derive the result, we first rewrite the spectral problem for a Jacobi matrix as an e…
We present some new results in theory of classical theta-functions of Jacobi and sigma-functions of Weierstrass: ordinary differential equations (dynamical systems) and series expansions. The paper is basically organized as a stream of new formulas.
