Generalized Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal polynomials related to a weight function which is smooth and positive on the whole interval of orthogonality up to a finite number of points, where algebraic singularities occur. The influence of these singular points on the asymptotic behaviour of the recurrence coefficients is investigated.
We investigate the uniform asymptotic of some Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. Three term recurrence relation is given, moreover we give a recurrence relation between the so-called Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and Freud orthogonal polynomials.
We discuss the relationship between the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a generalized Freud weight \[w(x;t)=|x|^{2λ+1}\exp\left(-x^4+tx^2\right),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R},\] with parameters $λ>-1$ and $t\in\mathbb{R}$, and classical solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation. We show that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of parabolic cylinder functions that arise in the description of special function solutions of the fourth Painlevé equation. Further we derive a second-order linear ordinary differential equatio…
We present an asymmetric $q$-Painlevé equation. We will derive this using $q$-orthogonal polynomials with respect to generalized Freud weights: their recurrence coefficients will obey this $q$-Painlevé equation (up to a simple transformation). We will show a stable method of computing a special solution which gives the recurrence coefficients. We establish a connection with $α-q-P_V$.
We give four examples of families of orthogonal polynomials for which the coefficients in the recurrence relation satisfy a discrete Painlevé equation. The first example deals with Freud weights $|x|^ρ\exp(-|x|^m)$ on the real line, and we repeat Freud's derivation and analysis for the cases $m=2,4,6$. The Freud equations for the recurrence coefficients when $m=4$ corresponds to the discrete Painlevé I equation. The second example deals with orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle for the weight $\exp(λ\cos θ)$. These orthogonal polynomials are important in the theory of random unitary matri…
We consider the semi-classical generalized Freud weight function \[w_λ(x;t) = |x|^{2λ+1}\exp(-x^4 +tx^2),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R},\] with $ λ>-1$ and $t\in\mathbb{R}$ parameters. We analyze the asymptotic behavior of the sequences of monic polynomials that are orthogonal with respect to $w_λ(x;t)$, as well as the asymptotic behavior of the recurrence coefficient, when the degree, or alternatively, the parameter $t$, tend to infinity. We also investigate existence and uniqueness of positive solutions of the nonlinear difference equation satisfied by the recurrence coefficients and prove properties…
We discuss the recurrence coefficients of orthogonal polynomials with respect to a generalised sextic Freud weight \[ω(x;t,λ)=|x|^{2λ+1}\exp\left(-x^6+tx^2\right),\qquad x\in\mathbb{R},\] with parameters $λ>-1$ and $t\in\mathbb{R}$. We show that the coefficients in these recurrence relations can be expressed in terms of Wronskians of generalised hypergeometric functions ${}_1F_2(a_1;b_1,b_2;z)$. We derive a nonlinear discrete as well as a system of differential equations satisfied by the recurrence coefficients and use these to investigate their asymptotic behaviour. We conclude by highlightin…
In this contribution we deal with sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the Freud Sobolev-type inner product \begin{equation*} \left\langle p,q\right\rangle _{s}=\int_{\mathbb{R}}p(x)q(x)e^{-x^{4}}dx+M_{0}p(0)q(0)+M_{1}p^{\prime }(0)q^{\prime }(0), \end{equation*}% where $p,q$ are polynomials, $M_{0}$ and $M_{1}$ are nonnegative real numbers. Connection formulas between these polynomials and Freud polynomials are deduced and, as a consequence, a five term recurrence relation for such polynomials is obtained. The location of their zeros as well as their asymptotic behavior i…
In this paper, monic polynomials orthogonal with deformation of the Freud-type weight function are considered. These polynomials fullfill linear differential equation with some polynomial coefficients in their holonomic form. The aim of this work is explore certain characterizing properties of perturbed Freud type polynomials such as nonlinear recursion relations, finite moments, differential-recurrence and differential relations satisfied by the recurrence coefficients as well as the corresponding semiclassical orthogonal polynomials. We note that the obtained differential equation fulfilled …
In this contribution we consider sequences of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to the standard Freud-like inner product involving a quartic potential $\left\langle p,q\right\rangle_{M}=\int_{\mathbb{R}}p(x)q(x)e^{-x^{4}+2tx^{2}}dx+Mp(0)q(0).$ We analyze some properties of these polynomials, such as the ladder operators and the holonomic equation that they satisfy and, as an application, we give an electrostatic interpretation of their zero distribution in terms of a logarithmic potential interaction under the action of an external field. It is also shown that the coefficients of their…
We show that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence relation for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a semi-classical extension of the Laguerre weight satisfy the fourth Painlevé equation when viewed as functions of one of the parameters in the weight. We compare different approaches to derive this result, namely, the ladder operators approach, the isomonodromy deformations approach and combining the Toda system for the recurrence coefficients with a discrete equation. We also discuss a relation between the recurrence coefficients for the Freud weight and the semi-classical Laguerre …
We consider orthogonal polynomials p_n with respect to an exponential weight function w(x) = exp(-P(x)). The related equations for the recurrence coefficients have been explored by many people, starting essentially with Laguerre [49], in order to study special continued fractions, recurrence relations, and various asymptotic expansions (G. Freud's contribution [28, 56]). Most striking example is n = 2tw_n + w_n(w_n+1 + w_n + w_n-1) for the recurrence coefficients p_n+1 = xp_n - w_np_n-1 of the orthogonal polynomials related to the weight w(x) = exp(-4(tx^3 + x^4)) (notation of [26, pp. 34-36])…

In a previous paper we presented $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients for $M$-indexed orthogonal polynomials of Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson types. In this paper we present (conjectures of) the recurrence relations with constant coefficients for these multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials. The simplest recurrence relations have $3+2\ell$ terms, where $\ell (\geq M)$ is the degree of the lowest member of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials.
The theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle is developed for a general class of weights leading to systems of recurrence relations and derivatives of the polynomials and their associated functions, and to functional-difference equations of certain coefficient functions appearing in the theory. A natural formulation of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is presented which has as its solution the above system of orthogonal polynomials and associated functions. In particular for the case of regular semi-classical weights on the unit circle $ w(z) = \prod^m_{j=1}(z-z_j(t))^{ρ_j} $, consisting…
We consider properties of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials with respect to the generalised Airy weight \[ω(x;t,λ)=x^λ\exp\left(-\tfrac13x^3+tx\right),\qquad x\in \mathbb{R}^+,\] with parameters $λ>-1$ and $t\in \mathbb{R}$. We also investigate the zeros and recurrence coefficients of the polynomials. The generalised sextic Freud weight \[ω(x;t,λ)=|x|^{2λ+1}\exp\left(-x^6+tx^2\right), \qquad x\in \mathbb{R},\] arises from a symmetrisation of the generalised Airy weight and we study analogous properties of the polynomials orthogonal with respect to this weight.
The theory of bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle is developed for a general class of weights leading to systems of recurrence relations and derivatives of the polynomials and their associated functions, and to functional-difference equations of certain coefficient functions appearing in the theory. A natural formulation of the Riemann-Hilbert problem is presented which has as its solution the above system of bi-orthogonal polynomials and associated functions. In particular for the case of regular semi-classical weights on the unit circle $ w(z) = \prod^m_{j=1}(z-z_j(t))^{ρ_j} $, cons…
In a recent work difference equations (Laguerre-Freud equations) for the bi-orthogonal polynomials and related quantities corresponding to the weight on the unit circle $ w(z)=\prod^m_{j=1}(z-z_j(t))^{ρ_j} $ were derived. Here it is shown that in the case $ m=3 $ these difference equations, when applied to the calculation of the underlying U(N) average, reduce to a coupled system identifiable with that obtained by Adler and van Moerbeke using methods of the Toeplitz lattice and Virasoro constraints. Moreover it is shown that this coupled system can be reduced to yield the discrete fifth Painlev…
In this paper we study the simplest deformation on a sequence of orthogonal polynomials, namely, replacing the original (or reference) weight $w_0(x)$ defined on an interval by $w_0(x)e^{-tx}.$ It is a well-known fact that under such a deformation the recurrence coefficients denoted as $α_n$ and $β_n$ evolve in $t$ according to the Toda equations, giving rise to the time dependent orthogonal polynomials, using Sogo's terminology. The resulting "time-dependent" Jacobi polynomials satisfy a linear second order ode. We will show that the coefficients of this ode are intimately related to a partic…
We construct the systems of bi-orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle where the Toeplitz structure of the moment determinants is replaced by $ \det(w_{2j-k})_{0\leq j,k \leq N-1} $ and the corresponding Vandermonde modulus squared is replaced by $ \prod_{1 \le j < k \le N}(ζ^{2}_k - ζ^{2}_j)(ζ^{-1}_k - ζ^{-1}_j) $. This is the simplest case of a general system of $pj-qk$ with $p,q$ co-prime integers. We derive analogues of the structures well known in the Toeplitz case: third order recurrence relations, determinantal and multiple-integral representations, their reproducing kernel and Christ…
A $\mathbb{D}$-semi-classical weight is one which satisfies a particular linear, first order homogeneous equation in a divided-difference operator $\mathbb{D}$. It is known that the system of polynomials, orthogonal with respect to this weight, and the associated functions satisfy a linear, first order homogeneous matrix equation in the divided-difference operator termed the spectral equation. Attached to the spectral equation is a structure which constitutes a number of relations such as those arising from compatibility with the three-term recurrence relation. Here this structure is elucidate…
