The classical polynomials of Meixner's type--Hermite, Charlier, Laguerre, Meixner, and Meixner--Pollaczek polynomials--are distinguished through a special form of their generating function, which involves the Laplace transform of their orthogonality measure. In this paper, we study analogs of the latter three classes of polynomials in infinite dimensions. We fix as an underlying space a (non-compact) Riemannian manifold $X$ and an intensity measure $σ$ on it. We consider a Jacobi field in the extended Fock space over $L^2(X;σ)$, whose field operator at a point $x\in X$ is of the form $\di_x^†+λ\di_x^†\di_x+\di_x+\di^†_x\di_x\di_x$, where $λ$ is a real parameter. Here, $\di_x$ and $\di_x^†$ are, respectively, the annihilation and creation operators at the point $x$. We then realize the field operators as multiplication operators in $L^2({\cal D}';μ_λ)$, where ${\cal D}'$ is the dual of ${\cal D}{:=}C_0^\infty(X)$, and $μ_λ$ is the spectral measure of the Jacobi field. We show that $μ_λ$ is a gamma measure for $|λ|=2$, a Pascal measure for $|λ|>2$, and a Meixner measure for $|λ|<2$. In all the cases, $μ_λ$ is a Lévy noise measure. The isomorphism between the extended Fock space and $L^2({\cal D}';μ_λ)$ is carried out by infinite-dimensional polynomials of Meixner's type. We find the generating function of these polynomials and using it, we study the action of the operators $\di_x$ and $\di_x^†$ in the functional realization.
About two dozens of exactly solvable Markov chains on one-dimensional finite and semi-infinite integer lattices are constructed in terms of convolutions of orthogonality measures of the Krawtchouk, Hahn, Meixner, Charlier, $q$-Hahn, $q$-Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi polynomials. By construction, the stationary probability distributions, the complete sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are provided by the polynomials and the orthogonality measures. An interesting property possessed by these stationary probability distributions, called `convolutional self-similarity,' is demonstrated.
We study a new family of q-Meixner multiple orthogonal polynomials of the first kind. The discrete orthogonality conditions are considered over a non-uniform lattice with respect to different q-analogues of Pascal distributions. We address some algebraic properties, namely raising and lowering operators as well as Rodrigues-type. Based on the explicit expressions for the raising and lowering operator a high-order linear q-difference equation with polynomial coefficients for the q-Meixner multiple orthogonal polynomials of the first kind is obtained. Finally, we obtain the nearest neighbor recu…
We introduce some multivariate analogues of Meixner, Charlier and Krawtchouk polynomials, and establish their main properties, that is, duality, degenerate limits, generating functions, orthogonality relations, difference equations, recurrence formulas and determinant expressions. A particularly important and interesting result is that "the generating function of the generating function" for the Meixner polynomials coincides with the generating function of the Laguerre polynomials, which has previously not been known even for the one variable case. Actually, main properties for the multivariat…
For a class of orthogonal polynomials related to the $q$-Meixner polynomials corresponding to an indeterminate moment problem we give a one-parameter family of orthogonality measures. For these measures we complement the orthogonal polynomials to an orthogonal basis for the corresponding weighted $L^2$-space explicitly. The result is proved in two ways; by a spectral decomposition of a suitable operator and by direct series manipulation. We discuss extensions to explicit non-positive measures and the relation to other indeterminate moment problems for the continuous $q^{-1}$-Hahn and $q$-Lague…
As the fourth stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present the multi-indexed Meixner and little $q$-Jacobi (Laguerre) polynomials in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts defined on the semi-infinite lattice in one dimension. They are obtained, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier, from the quantum mechanical systems corresponding to the original orthogonal polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of virtual stat…
We introduce the power collection method for easily deriving connection relations for certain hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials in the $(q-)$Askey scheme. We summarize the full-extent to which the power collection method may be used. As an example, we use the power collection method to derive connection and connection-type relations for Meixner and Krawtchouk polynomials. These relations are then used to derive generalizations of generating functions for these orthogonal polynomials. The coefficients of these generalized generating functions are in general, given in term of multiple hyperg…
An algebraic interpretation of the $q$-Meixner polynomials is obtained. It is based on representations of $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ on $q$-oscillator states with the polynomials appearing as matrix elements of unitary $q$-pseudorotation operators. These operators are built from $q$-exponentials of the $\mathcal{U}_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ generators. The orthogonality, recurrence relation, difference equation, and other properties of the $q$-Mexiner polynomials are systematically obtained in the proposed framework.
A short introduction to the use of the spectral theorem for self-adjoint operators in the theory of special functions is given. As the first example, the spectral theorem is applied to Jacobi operators, i.e. tridiagonal operators, on l^2(N), leading to a proof of Favard's theorem stating that polynomials satisfying a three-term recurrence relation are orthogonal polynomials. We discuss the link to the moment problem. In the second example, the spectral theorem is applied to Jacobi operators on l^2(Z). We discuss the theorem of Masson and Repka linking the deficiency indices of a Jacobi operato…
Multiple Meixner polynomials are polynomials in one variable which satisfy orthogonality relations with respect to $r>1$ different negative binomial distributions (Pascal distributions). There are two kinds of multiple Meixner polynomials, depending on the selection of the parameters in the negative binomial distribution. We recall their definition and some formulas and give generating functions and explicit expressions for the coefficients in the nearest neighbor recurrence relation. Following a recent construction of Miki, Tsujimoto, Vinet and Zhedanov (for multiple Meixner polynomials of th…
We study multiple orthogonal polynomials of Meixner-Pollaczek type with respect to a symmetric system of two orthogonality measures. Our main result is that the limiting distribution of the zeros of these polynomials is one component of the solution to a constrained vector equilibrium problem. We also provide a Rodrigues formula and closed expressions for the recurrence coefficients. The proof of the main result follows from a connection with the eigenvalues of block Toeplitz matrices, for which we provide some general results of independent interest. The motivation for this paper is the study…
The radial part of the wave function of an electron in a Coulomb potential is the product of a Laguerre polynomial and an exponential with the variable scaled by a factor depending on the degree. This note presents an elementary proof of the orthogonality of wave functions with differing energy levels. It is also shown that this is the only other natural orthogonality for Laguerre polynomials. By expanding in terms of the usual Laguerre polynomial basis an analogous strange orthogonality is obtained for Meixner polynomials.
We investigate the zeros of a family of hypergeometric polynomials $_2F_1(-n,-x;a;t)$, $n\in\nn$ that are known as the Meixner polynomials for certain values of the parameters $a$ and $t$. When $a=-N$, $N\in\nn$ and $t=\frac1{p}$, the polynomials $K_n(x;p,N)=(-N)_n\phantom{}_2F_1(-n,-x;-N;\frac1{p})$, $n=0,1,...N$, $0<p<1$ are referred to as Krawtchouk polynomials. We prove results for the zero location of the orthogonal polynomials $K_{n}(x;p,a)$, $0<p<1$ and $a>n-1$, the quasi-orthogonal polynomials $K_{n}(x;p,a)$, $k-1<a<k$, $k=1,...,n-1$ and $p>1$ or $p<0$ as well as the non-orthogonal pol…
We state and prove the $q$-extension of a result due to Johnston and Jordaan (cf. \cite{Johnston-2015}) and make use of this result, the orthogonality of $q$-Laguerre, little $q$-Jacobi, $q$-Meixner and Al-Salam-Carlitz I polynomials as well as contiguous relations satisfied by the polynomials, to establish the quasi-orthogonality of certain $_2ϕ_2$ and $_3ϕ_2$ polynomials. The location and interlacing properties of the real zeros of these quasi-orthogonal polynomials are studied. Interlacing properties of the zeros of $q$-Laguerre quasi-orthogonal polynomials $L_n^{(δ)}(z;q)$ when $-2<δ<-1$ w…
It is well known that the family of Hahn polynomials $\{h_n^{α,β}(x;N)\}_{n\ge 0}$ is orthogonal with respect to a certain weight function up to $N$. In this paper we present a factorization for Hahn polynomials for a degree higher than $N$ and we prove that these polynomials can be characterized by a $Δ$-Sobolev orthogonality. We also present an analogous result for dual-Hahn, Krawtchouk, and Racah polynomials and give the limit relations between them for all $n\in \XX N_0$. Furthermore, in order to get this results for the Krawtchouk polynomials we will get a more general property of orthogo…
We write spectral decomposition of the hypergeometric differential operator on the contour $Re z=1/2$ (multiplicity of spectrum is 2). As a result, we obtain an integral transform that differs from the Jacobi (or Olevsky) transform. We also try to do a step towards vector-valued special functions and construct a 3F2 orthogonal basis in the space of functions having values in 2-dimensional space. This basis is lying in an analytic continuation of continuous dual Hahn polynomials with respect to number $n$ of a polynomial. In Addendum, we discuss a vector-value analog of the Meixner--Pollachek o…
This is the second part of the project `unified theory of classical orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable derived from the eigenvalue problems of hermitian matrices.' In a previous paper, orthogonal polynomials having Jackson integral measures were not included, since such measures cannot be obtained from single infinite dimensional hermitian matrices. Here we show that Jackson integral measures for the polynomials of the big $q$-Jacobi family are the consequence of the recovery of self-adjointness of the unbounded Jacobi matrices governing the difference equations of these polynomials…
In previous papers, we discussed the recurrence relations of the multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials of the Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson, Askey-Wilson, Racah and $q$-Racah types. In this paper we explore those of the Meixner-Pollaczek and continuous Hahn types. For the $M$-indexed Meixner-Pollaczek and continuous Hahn polynomials, we present $3+2M$ term recurrence relations with variable dependent coefficients and $1+2L$ term ($L\geq M+1$) recurrence relations with constant coefficients. Based on the latter, the generalized closure relations and the creation/annihilation operators of the quantum …
In this manuscript we study algebraic and analytic properties of the sequence of monic polynomials orthogonal with respect to a Jacobi differential operator. A fluid dynamics model for source points location of a flow of an incompressible fluid with preassigned stagnation points is also considered.
Orthogonality of the Jacobi and of Laguerre polynomials, P_n^(a,b) and L_n^(a), is established for a,b complex (a,b not negative integers and a+b different from -2,-3,...) using the Hadamard finite part of the integral which gives their orthogonality in the classical cases. Riemann-Hilbert problems that these polynomials satisfy are found. The results are formally similar to the ones in the classical case (when the real parts of a,b are greater than -1)
In this paper we study the orthogonality conditions satisfied by Jacobi polynomials $P_n^{(α,β)}$ when the parameters $α$ and $β$ are not necessarily $>-1$. We establish orthogonality on a generic closed contour on a Riemann surface. Depending on the parameters, this leads to either full orthogonality conditions on a single contour in the plane, or to multiple orthogonality conditions on a number of contours in the plane. In all cases we show that the orthogonality conditions characterize the Jacobi polynomial $P_n^{(α, β)}$ of degree $n$ up to a constant factor.
In this article, the study of the orthogonality properties of $q$-polynomials of the Hahn class started in the initial article by R. Álvarez-Nodarse, R. Sevinik-Adıgüzel, and H. Taşeli, \textit{On the orthogonality of $q$-classical polynomials of the Hahn class I} is proceeded. To be more specific, the orthogonality properties of the $q$-polynomials belonging to the $\emptyset$-Hermite-Laguerre/Jacobi, $\emptyset$-Jacobi/Hermite-Laguerre, 0-Laguerre/Jacobi-Bessel and 0-Jacobi/Laguerre-Bessel cases are studied by taking into account the idea considered in the initial paper. In particular, a new…
Burchnall's method to invert the Feldheim-Watson linearization formula for the Hermite polynomials is extended to all polynomial families in the Askey-scheme and its $q$-analogue. The resulting expansion formulas are made explicit for several families corresponding to measures with infinite support, including the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. An integrated version gives the possibility to give alternate expression for orthogonal polynomials with respect to a modified weight. This gives expansions for polynomials, such as Hermite, Laguerre, Meixner, Charlier, Meixner-Pollaczek and big $q…
We study Jacobi matrices on trees whose coefficients are generated by multiple orthogonal polynomials. Hilbert space decomposition into an orthogonal sum of cyclic subspaces is obtained. For each subspace, we find generators and the generalized eigenfunctions written in terms of the orthogonal polynomials. The spectrum and its spectral type are studied for large classes of orthogonality measures.
The classical orthogonal polynomials are usually defined by the Rodrigues' formula. This paper refers to a fractional extension of the classical Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn polynomials. By means of the Caputo operator of fractional calculus, C-Hermite, C-Laguerre, C-Legndre and the C-Jacobi functions are defined and their representation in terms of the hypergeometric functions are provided. Also, by means of the Gray and Zhang fractional difference oparator, fractional Charlier, Meixner, Krawtchouk and Hahn functions are defined and their representation in…
We study a family of orthogonal polynomials which satisfy (apart from a 3-term recurrence relation) an eigenvalue equation involving a third order differential operator of Dunkl-type. The orthogonality measure of these polynomials consists in the continuous measure of the little -1 Jacobi polynomials to which is added an arbitrary mass located at the point $x=0$, the middle of the orthogonality interval. This provides the first nontrivial example of Krall-type polynomials with a point mass inside the orthogonality interval. These polynomials can be obtained by a Geronimus transform of the litt…
Many limits are known for hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials that occur in the Askey scheme. We show how asymptotic representations can be derived by using the generating functions of the polynomials. For example, we discuss the asymptotic representation of the Meixner-Pollaczek, Jacobi, Meixner, and Krawtchouk polynomials in terms of Laguerre polynomials.
Jacobi polynomials are mapped onto the continuous Hahn polynomials by the Fourier transform and the orthogonality relations for the continuous Hahn polynomials then follow from the orthogonality relations for the Jacobi polynomials and the Parseval formula. In a special case this relation dates back to work by Bateman in 1933 and we follow a part of the historical development for these polynomials. Some applications of this relation are given.
This paper studies properties of q-Jacobi polynomials and their duals by means of operators of the discrete series representations for the quantum algebra U_q(su_{1,1}). Spectrum and eigenfunctions of these operators are found explicitly. These eigenfunctions, when normalized, form an orthogonal basis in the representation space. The initial U_q(su_{1,1})-basis and the bases of these eigenfunctions are interconnected by matrices, whose entries are expressed in terms of little and big q-Jacobi polynomials. The orthogonality by rows in these unitary connection matrices leads to the orthogonality…
Explicit expressions for the Hahn multiple polynomials of type I, in terms of Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given. Orthogonal and biorthogonal relations are proven. Then, part of the Askey scheme for multiple orthogonal polynomials type I is completed. In particular, explicit expressions in terms of generalized hypergeometric series and Kampé de Fériet hypergeometric series, are given for the multiple orthogonal polynomials of type I for the Jacobi-Piñeiro, Meixner I, Meixner II, Kravchuk, Laguerre I, Laguerre II and Charlier families.
We present a method to obtain weight functions associated with linear and quadratic lattices that yield discrete orthogonality with respect to a quasi-definite moment functional of the orthogonal polynomial sequences in the Askey scheme, with the exception of the Jacobi, Bessel, Laguerre, and Hermite polynomials.
In this paper, we consider the second-order differential expression \ell [y](x)=(1-x^2)(-(y'(x))'+k(1-x^2)^(-1)y(x))(x\in(-1,1)). This is the Jacobi differential expression with non-classical parameters α = β= -1 in contrast to the classical case when α, β > -1. For fixed k \geq 0 and appropriate values of the spectral parameter λ, the equation \ell[y]=λy has, as in the classical case, a sequence of (Jacobi) polynomial solutions {P_{n}^{(-1,-1)}}_{n=0}^{\infty}. These Jacobi polynomial solutions of degree \geq 2 form a complete orthogonal set in the Hilbert space L^2((-1,1);(1-x^2)^(-1). Unlik…
For a long time it has been a challenging goal to identify all orthogonal polynomial systems that occur as eigenfunctions of a linear differential equation. One of the widest classes of such eigenfunctions known so far, is given by Koornwinder's generalized Jacobi polynomials with four parameters $α,β\in\mathbb{N}_{0}$ and $M,N \ge 0$ determining the orthogonality measure on the interval $-1 \le x \le 1$. The corresponding differential equation of order $2α+2β+6$ is presented here as a linear combination of four elementary components which make the corresponding differential operator widely ac…
A hierarchy of matrix-valued polynomials which generalize the Jacobi polynomials is found. Defined by a Rodrigues formula, they are also products of a sequence of differential operators. Each class of polynomials is complete, satisfies a two-step recurrence relation, integral inter-relations, and quasi-orthogonality relations.
We review properties of q-orthogonal polynomials, related to their orthogonality, duality and connection with the theory of symmetric (self-adjoint) operators, represented by a Jacobi matrix. In particular, we show how one can naturally interpret the duality of families of q-polynomials, orthogonal on countable sets of points. In order to obtain orthogonality relations for dual sets of polynomials, it is proposed to use two symmetric (self-adjoint) operators, representable (in some distinct bases) by Jacobi matrices. This approach is applied to several pairs of dual families of q-polynomials, …
We give a detailed description of the resolution of the identity of a second order $q$-difference operator considered as an unbounded self-adjoint operator on two different Hilbert spaces. The $q$-difference operator and the two choices of Hilbert spaces naturally arise from harmonic analysis on the quantum group $SU_q(1,1)$ and $SU_q(2)$. The spectral analysis associated to $SU_q(1,1)$ leads to the big $q$-Jacobi function transform together with its Plancherel measure and inversion formula. The dual orthogonality relations give a one-parameter family of non-extremal orthogonality measures for…
We prove that similarly to the standard case, the equilibrium measure of Julia sets of exceptional Jacobi polynomials tends to the equilibrium measure of the interval of orthogonality in weak-star sense.
Generalized Jacobi polynomials are orthogonal polynomials related to a weight function which is smooth and positive on the whole interval of orthogonality up to a finite number of points, where algebraic singularities occur. The influence of these singular points on the asymptotic behaviour of the recurrence coefficients is investigated.
Below the normalized weighted reciprocal of the Christoffel function with respect to exceptional Jacobi polynomials is investigated. It is proved that it tends to the equilibrium measure of the interval of orthogonality in weak-star sense. The main tool of this study is the multiplication operator and examination of behavior of zeros of the corresponding average characteristic polynomial. Finally, as an application of multiplication operator, location of zeros of certain self-inversive polynomials are examined.
We introduce two kinds of multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials by imposing orthogonality conditions with respect to r discrete little q-Jacobi measures on the exponential lattice q^k (k=0,1,2,3,...), where 0 < q < 1. We show that these multiple little q-Jacobi polynomials have useful q-difference properties, such as a Rodrigues formula (consisting of a product of r difference operators). Some properties of the zeros of these polynomials and some asymptotic properties will be given as well.
We introduce a new multivariate orthogonal polynomial which is a 2-parameter deformation of the spherical polynomial by harmonic analysis on symmetric cone. This is also regarded as a multivariate analogue of the circular Jacobi polynomial. Further, the weight function of its orthogonality relation coincides with the circular Jacobi ensemble defined by Bourgade et al.. We also obtain its main properties : generating function, pseudo differential equation and deteraminant expression.
Matrix-valued analogues of the little q-Jacobi polynomials are introduced and studied. For the 2x2-matrix-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials explicit expressions for the orthogonality relations, Rodrigues formula, three-term recurrence relation and their relation to matrix-valued q-hypergeometric series and the scalar-valued little q-Jacobi polynomials are presented. The study is based on a matrix-valued q-difference operator, which is a q-analogue of Tirao's matrix-valued hypergeometric differential operator.
We give formulas for the density of the measure of orthogonality for orthonormal polynomials with unbounded recurrence coefficients. The formulas involve limits of appropriately scaled Turán determinants or Christoffel functions. Exact asymptotics of the polynomials and numerical examples are also provided.
We look for differential equations satisfied by the generalized Jacobi polynomials which are orthogonal on the interval [-1,1] with respect to a weight function consisting of the classical Jacobi weight function together with point masses at the endpoints of the interval of orthogonality. In order to find explicit formulas for the coefficients of these differential equations we have to solve systems of equations involving derivatives of the classical Jacobi polynomials. We show that these systems of equations have a unique solution which is given explicitly. This is a consequence of the Jacobi…
