Building on work of Davenport and Schmidt, we mainly prove two results. The first one is a version of Gel'fond's transcendence criterion which provides a sufficient condition for a complex or $p$-adic number $ξ$ to be algebraic in terms of the existence of polynomials of bounded degree taking small values at $ξ$ together with most of their derivatives. The second one, which follows from this criterion by an argument of duality, is a result of simultaneous approximation by conjugate algebraic integers for a fixed number $ξ$ that is either transcendental or algebraic of sufficiently large degree. We also present several constructions showing that these results are essentially optimal.
We establish an explicit asymptotic formula for the number of rational solutions of intrinsic Diophantine inequalities on simply-connected simple algebraic groups, at arbitrarily small scales.
The paper assesses the top number of integer solutions for algebraic Diophantine Thue diagonal equation of the degree $n \geq 2$ and number of variables $k > 2$ and equations with explicit variable in the case when the coefficients of the equation are of the opposite signs. The author found integer conversions that maintain the asymptotic behavior of the number of integer solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation in the case of the conversion equation to diagonal form. The paper considers the estimation of the number of integer solutions for some types of algebraic Diophantine equations with…
This paper investigates the upper bound of the number of integer (natural) solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with integer coefficients without a free member via the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood. Author found the upper bound of the number of natural solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with explicit variable. He developed a method in the paper, which allows you to perform the low estimate of the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. Author obtained a lower estim…
The author showed that any homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order can be converted to a diagonal form using an integer non-orthogonal transformation maintaining asymptotic behavior of the number of its integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the transformation to the diagonal form of a wider class of algebraic second-order Diophantine equations, and also we consider the conditions for converting higher order algebraic Diophantine equations to this form. The author found an asymptotic estimate for the number of integer solutions of the diagonal Thue equation of odd…
Author developed a method in the paper, which, unlike the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood (CM), allows you to perform a lower estimate for the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. It was found the lower estimate of the number of natural solutions to various types of homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equations with integer coefficients diagonal form with any number of variables using this method. Author obtained upper bound of the number of the natural solutions (using CM) of one type of homogeneous Diophantine equation for val…
We introduce diophantine approximation groups and their associated Kronecker foliations, using them to provide new algebraic and geometric characterizations of $K$-linear and algebraic dependence. As a consequence we find reformulations -- as algebraic and geometric (graph) rigidities -- of the Theorems of Baker and Lindemann-Weierstrass, the Logarithm Conjecture and the Schanuel Conjecture. There is an Appendix describing diophantine approximation groups as model theoretic types.
The paper presents a new generalized integer orthogonal transformation which consists of a well known orthogonal transform followed by stretching the basis vectors maintaining the asymptotic behavior of the number of integer solutions for algebraic Diophantine equation. The author shows the properties of this transformation and he receives the algorithm for finding the matrix elements of a generalized integer orthogonal transformation for algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order to diagonal form. The article includes examples illustrating the reduction of algebraic equations of the s…
This article discusses the question - how to estimate the number of solutions of algebraic Diophantine equations with natural coefficients using Circular method developed by Hardy and Littlewood. This paper considers the estimate of the number of solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation: $c_1x_1^{k_1}+c_2x_2^{k_2}+...+c_sx_s^{k_s}=n$. The author found the asymptotic estimate for the number of solutions of this equation as a function of the value $n$, if all coefficients and $n$ are natural. This article analyzes the results and shows that these estimates of the number of natural solutions o…
I present here the proofs of results, which are obtained in my papers "On the linear forms with algebraic coefficoients of logarithms of algebraic numbers", VINITI, 1996, 1617-B96, pp. 1 - 23 (in Russian), and "On the systems of linear forms with algebraic coefficoients of logarithms of algebraic numbers", VINITI, 1996, 2663-B96, pp. 1 - 18 (in Russian).
A paradigm for a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. This is achieved through the study of subgroups of nonstandard models of Dedekind domains called diophantine approximation groups. The arithmetic of diophantine approximation groups is defined in a way which extends the ideal-theoretic arithmetic of algebraic number theory, using the structure of an approximate ideal: a bi-filtration by subgroups along which partial products may be performed.
Consider a form $g(x_1,...,x_s)$ of degree $d$, having coefficients in the completion $F_q((1/t))$ of the field of fractions $F_q(t)$ associated to the finite field $F_q$. We establish that whenever $s>d^2$, then the form $g$ takes arbitrarily small values for non-zero arguments $x\in F_q[t]^s$. We provide related results for problems involving distribution modulo $F_q[t]$, and analogous conclusions for quasi-algebraically closed fields in general.
In this part we show that the diophantine equation $X^5+Y^5=\varepsilon^5(1-X^5Y^5)$, where $\varepsilon=\frac{-1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, has solutions in specific abelian extensions of quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ in which $-d \equiv \pm 1$ (mod $5$). The coordinates of these solutions are values of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$, and are shown to be periodic points of an algebraic function.
The paper shows that the asymptotic density of solutions of Diophantine equations or systems of the natural numbers is 0. The author provides estimation methods and estimates number, density and probability of k- tuples $<x_1,...x_k>$ to be the solution of the algebraic equations of the first, second and higher orders in two or more variables, non-algebraic Diophantine equations and systems of Diophantine equations in the domain of the natural numbers. The estimate for the number of positive integer solutions of the second-order Diophantine equations in two, three or more variables is geometri…
Consider the equation $q_1α^{x_1}+\dots+q_kα^{x_k} = q$, with constants $α\in \overline{\mathbb{Q}} \setminus \{0,1\}$, $q_1,\ldots,q_k,q\in\overline{\mathbb{Q}}$ and unknowns $x_1,\ldots,x_k$, referred to in this paper as an \emph{algebraic equation with exponents}. We prove that the problem to decide if a given equation has an integer solution is $\textbf{NP}$-complete, and that the same holds for systems of equations (whether $α$ is fixed or given as part of the input). Furthermore, we describe the set of all solutions for a given system of algebraic equations with exponents and prove that …
We develop the theory of Diophantine approximation for systems of simultaneously small linear forms, which coefficients are drawn from any given analytic non-degenerate manifolds. This setup originates from a problem of Sprindžuk from the 1970s on approximations to several real numbers by conjugate algebraic numbers. Our main result is a Khintchine type theorem, which convergence case is established without usual monotonicity constrains and the divergence case is proved for Hausdorff measures. The result encompasses several previous findings and, within the setup considered, gives the best pos…
All the periodic points of a certain algebraic function related to the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$ are determined. They turn out to be $0, \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$, and the conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the values $r(w_d/5)$, where $w_d$ is one of a specific set of algebraic integers, divisible by the square of a prime divisor of 5, in the field $K_d=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, as $-d$ ranges over all negative quadratic discriminants for which $\left(\frac{-d}{5}\right) = +1$. This yields new insights on class numbers of orders in the fields $K_d$. Conjecture 1 of Part I is prov…
Because of its ineffectiveness, the usual arithmetic Hilbert-Samuel formula is not applicable in the context of Diophantine Approximation. In order to overcome this difficulty, the present paper presents explicit estimates for arithmetic Hilbert Functions of closed subvarieties in projective space.
We investigate approximation to a given real number by algebraic numbers and algebraic integers of prescribed degree. We deal with both best and uniform approximation, and highlight the similarities and differences compared with the intensely studied problem of approximation by algebraic numbers (and integers) of bounded degree. We establish the answer to a question of Bugeaud concerning approximation to transcendental real numbers by quadratic irrational numbers, and thereby we refine a result of Davenport and Schmidt from 1967. We also obtain several new characterizations of Liouville number…
For $θ$ a non-algebraic point on a quasi projective variety over a number field, I prove that $θ$ has an approximation by a series of algebraic points of bounded height and degree which is essentially best possible. Applications of this result will include a proof of a slightly strengthened version of the Philippon criterion, some new algebraic independence criteria, statements concerning metric transcendence theory on varieties of arbitrary dimension, and a rather accurate estimate for the number of algebraic points of bounded height and degree on quasi projective varieties over number fields…
For two properly intersecting effective cycles in projective space X,Y, and their intersection product Z, the metric Bezout Theorem relates the degrees, heights of X,Y, and Z, as well as their distances and algebraic distances to a given point theta. Applications of this Theorem are in the area of Diophantine Approximation, giving estimates for approximation properties of Z with respect to $θ$ against the ones of X, and Y.
The metric Bezout Theorem proved in an earlier paper can be extended to a derivative version that compares derivatives of the algebraic distance of a point $θ$ to two properly intersecting cycles in projective space with the derivatives of the algebraic distance of $θ$ to their intersection. This improvement can be used to make algebraic independence criteria, to be proved in a forthcoming paper, more flexible and to refine Approximation results that are proved using the metric Bezout Theorem.
The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.
Solutions of the quartic Fermat equation in ring class fields of odd conductor over quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$) are shown to be periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $T(z)$ defined on the punctured disk $0< |z|_2 \le \frac{1}{2}$ of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension $\textsf{K}_2$ of the $2$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_2$. All ring class fields of odd conductor over imaginary quadratic fields in which the prime $p=2$ splits are shown to be generated by complex periodic points of the algebraic function $T$, and conversely, all but two of …
This is the second paper in a series of two in which a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. In this paper, to any real number $θ$ we associate its polynomial diophantine approximation ring: a tri-filtered subring of a nonstandard model of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[X]$. We characterize the filtration structure of the polynomial diophantine approximation ring according to the Mahler class and the Mahler type of $θ$. The arithmetic of polynomial diophantine approximation groups is intro…
In this paper we present a new approach to prove effective results in Diophantine approximation. We then use it to prove an effective theorem on the simultaneous approximation of two algebraic numbers satisfying an algebraic equation with complex coefficients.
In this paper, we present a result on using algebraic conjugates to form a sequence of approximations to an algebraic number, and in this way obtain effective irrationality measures for related algebraic numbers. From this result, we are able to generalise Thue's Fundamentaltheorem.
We associate certain curves over function fields to given algebraic power series and show that bounds on the rank of Kodaira-Spencer map of this curves imply bounds on the exponents of the power series, with more generic curves giving lower exponents. If we transport Vojta's conjecture on height inequality to finite characteristic by modifying it by adding suitable deformation theoretic condition, then we see that the numbers giving rise to general curves approach Roth's bound. We also prove a hierarchy of exponent bounds for approximation by algebraic quantities of bounded degree.
Let $d$ be a positive integer. Let $p$ be a prime number. Let $α$ be a real algebraic number of degree $d+1$. We establish that there exist a positive constant $c$ and infinitely many algebraic numbers $ξ$ of degree $d$ such that $|α- ξ| \cdot \min\{|\Norm(ξ)|_p,1\} < c H(ξ)^{-d-1} (\log 3 H(ξ))^{-1/d}$. Here, $H(ξ)$ and $\Norm(ξ)$ denote the na{\"ı}ve height of $ξ$ and its norm, respectively. This extends an earlier result of de Mathan and Teulié that deals with the case $d=1$.
Using a method of H. Davenport and W. M. Schmidt, we show that, for each positive integer n, the ratio 2/n is the optimal exponent of simultaneous approximation to real irrational numbers 1) by all conjugates of algebraic numbers of degree n, and 2) by all but one conjugates of algebraic integers of degree n+1.
There are abundant results on Diophantine approximation over fields of positive characteristic (see the survey papers [13, 25]), but there is very little information about simultaneous approximation. In this paper, we develop a technique of \geometry of numbers" in positive characteristic, so that we may generalize some of the classical results on simultaneous approximation to the case of function fields. More precisely, we approximate a finite set of Laurent series by rational functions with a common denominator. In particular, the lower bound results we obtain may be regarded as a high dimen…
We show that Y. Cheung's general $Z$-continued fractions can be adapted to give approximation by saddle connection vectors for any compact translation surface. That is, we show the finiteness of his Minkowski constant for any compact translation surface. Furthermore, we show that for a Veech surface in standard form, each component of any saddle connection vector dominates its conjugates. The saddle connection continued fractions then allow one to recognize certain transcendental directions by their developments.
We first recall the connection, going back to A. Thue, between rational approximation to algebraic numbers and integer solutions of some Diophantine equations. Next we recall the equivalence between several finiteness results on various Diophantine equations. We also give many equivalent statements of Mahler's generalization of the fundamental theorem of Thue. In particular, we show that the theorem of Thue--Mahler for degree $3$ implies the theorem of Thue--Mahler for arbitrary degree $\ge3$, and we relate it with a theorem of Siegel on the rational integral points of the projective line $¶^1…
In a recent paper, J.-B. Bost establishes a criterion for certain ``formal subvarieties'' of algebraic varieties to be algebraic. His theorem unifies and generalizes results of Chudnovsky's and Y. André, motivated by an arithmetic conjecture of Grothendieck that predicts that the solutions of certain differential equations are algebraic functions. The proof makes use of the diophantine approximation techniques introduced by these authors but with a systematic geometric point of view, notably via Arakelov geometry and the formalism of ``slopes''.
For a tuple $(θ_1,..,θ_M)$ of complex number, buliding on the approximation techniques in earlier papers of this series, this paper engages in deducing lower estimates on the transcendence degree of the field generated by $θ_1, ..., θ_M$ over the field of rational numbers from the approximability of the point $θ=(1,θ_1,...,θ_M)$ in projective space by hypersurfaces. The first given result is an new proof of an algebraic independence criterion, that was formerly proved by Laurent and Roy, and generalizes the Philippon criterion by introducing also evaluations of derivatives of global sections. …
Let $α$ be an algebraic number of degree $d\ge 3$ and let $K$ be the algebraic number field $\Q(α)$. When $\varepsilon$ is a unit of $K$ such that $\Q(α\varepsilon)=K$, we consider the irreducible polynomial $f_\varepsilon(X) \in \Z[X]$ such that $f_\varepsilon(α\varepsilon)=0$. Let $F_\varepsilon(X,Y)$ be the irrreducible binary form of degree $d$ associated to $f_{\varepsilon}(X) $ under the condition $F_{\varepsilon}(X,1)=f_{\varepsilon}(X)$. For each positive integer $m$, we want to exhibit an effective upper bound for the solutions $(x,y,\varepsilon)$ of the diophantine inequation $|F_\va…
We study the Hausdorff measure and dimension of the set of intrinsically simultaneously $ψ$-approximable points on a curve, surface, etc., given as a graph of integer valued polynomials. We obtain complete answers to these questions for algebraically "nice" manifolds. This generalizes earlier work done in the case of curves.
Using the Thue-Siegel method, we obtain effective improvements on Liouville's irrationality measure for certain one-parameter families of algebraic numbers, defined by equations of the type $(t-a)Q(t)+P(t)=0$. We apply these to some corresponding Diophantine equations. We obtain bounds for the size of solutions, which depend polynomially on $a$, and bounds for the number of these solutions, which are independent of $a$ and in some cases even independent of the degree of the equation.
We find sharp upper and lower bounds for the degree of an algebraic number in terms of the $Q$-dimension of the space spanned by its conjugates. For all but seven nonnegative integers $n$ the largest degree of an algebraic number whose conjugates span a vector space of dimension $n$ is equal to $2^n n!$. The proof, which covers also the seven exceptional cases, uses a result of Feit on the maximal order of finite subgroups of $GL_n(Q)$; this result depends on the classification of finite simple groups. In particular, we construct an algebraic number of degree 1152 whose conjugates span a vecto…
The inhomogeneous Groshev type theory for dual Diophantine approximation on manifolds is developed. In particular, the notion of nice manifolds is introduced and the divergence part of the theory is established for all such manifolds. Our results naturally incorporate and generalize the homogeneous measure and dimension theorems for non-degenerate manifolds established to date. The generality of the inhomogeneous aspect considered within enables us to make a new contribution even to the classical theory in R^n. Furthermore, the multivariable aspect considered within has natural applications be…
We investigate the distribution of real algebraic numbers of a fixed degree having a close conjugate number, the distance between the conjugate numbers being given as a function of their height. The main result establishes the ubiquity of such algebraic numbers in the real line and implies a sharp quantitative bound on their number. Although the main result is rather general it implies new estimates on the least possible distance between conjugate algebraic numbers, which improve recent bounds of Bugeaud and Mignotte. So far the results a la Bugeaud and Mignotte relied on finding explicit fami…
In the present paper we establish bounds for the size of the spectral gap for actions of algebraic groups on certain homogeneous spaces. Our approach is based on estimating operator norms of suitable averaging operators, and we develop techniques for establishing both upper and lower bounds for such norms. We shall show that this analytic problem is closely related to the arithmetic problem of establishing bounds on the discrepancy of distribution for rational points on algebraic group varieties. As an application, we show how to establish an effective bound for property $τ$ of congruence subg…
We study the general problem of equidistribution of expanding translates of an analytic curve by an algebraic diagonal flow on the homogeneous space $G/Γ$ of a semisimple algebraic group $G$. We define two families of algebraic subvarieties of the associated partial flag variety $G/P$, which give the obstructions to non-divergence and equidistribution. We apply this to prove that for Lebesgue almost every point on an analytic curve in the space of $m\times n$ real matrices whose image is not contained in any subvariety coming from these two families, the Dirichlet's theorem on simultaneous Dio…
We present a general result of simultaneous approximation to several transcendental real, complex or p-adic numbers xi_1,...,xi_t by conjugate algebraic numbers of bounded degree over Q, provided that the given transcendental numbers xi_1,...,xi_t generate over Q a field of transcendence degree one. We provide sharper estimates for example when xi_1,...,xi_t form an arithmetic progression with non-zero algebraic difference, or a geometric progression with non-zero algebraic ratio different from a root of unity. In this case, we also obtain by duality a version of Gel'fond's transcendence crite…
Suppose that $F(x)\in\mathbb{Z}[[x]]$ is a Mahler function and that $1/b$ is in the radius of convergence of $F(x)$. In this paper, we consider the approximation of $F(1/b)$ by algebraic numbers. In particular, we prove that $F(1/b)$ cannot be a Liouville number. If $F(x)$ is also regular, we show that $F(1/b)$ is either rational or transcendental, and in the latter case that $F(1/b)$ is an $S$-number or a $T$-number.
In this paper, we use the method of Thue and Siegel, based on explicit Pade approximations to algebraic functions, to completely solve a family of quartic Thue equations. From this result, we can also solve the diophantine equation in the title. We prove that this equation has at most one solution in positive integers when $d \geq 3$. Moreover, when such a solution exists, it is of the form $(u,\sqrt{v})$ where $(u,v)$ is the fundamental solution of $X^{2}+1=dY^{2}$.
We study the diophantine exponent of analytic submanifolds of the space of m by n real matrices, answering questions of Beresnevich, Kleinbock and Margulis. We identify a family of algebraic obstructions to the extremality of such a submanifold, and give a formula for the exponent when the submanifold is algebraic and defined over the rationals. We then apply these results to the determination of the diophantine exponent of rational nilpotent Lie groups.
Let $φ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ be a continuously differentiable function on an interval $J\subset\mathbb{R}$ and let $\boldsymbolα=(α_1,α_2)$ be a point with algebraic conjugate integer coordinates of degree $\leq n$ and of height $\leq Q$. Denote by $\tilde{M}^n_φ(Q,γ, J)$ the set of points $\boldsymbolα$ such that $|φ(α_1)-α_2|\leq c_1 Q^{-γ}$. In this paper we show that for a real $0<γ<1$ and any sufficiently large $Q$ there exist positive values $c_2<c_3$, which are independent of $Q$, such that $c_2\cdot Q^{n-γ}<# \tilde{M}^n_φ(Q,γ, J)< c_3\cdot Q^{n-γ}$.
We investigate Diophantine definability and decidability over some subrings of algebraic numbers contained in quadratic extensions of totally real algebraic extensions of $\mathbb Q$. Among other results we prove the following. The big subring definability and undecidability results previously shown by the author to hold over totally complex extensions of degree 2 of totally real number fields, are shown to hold for {\it all} extensions of degree 2 of totally real number fields. The definability and undecidability results for integral closures of ``small'' and ``big'' subrings of number fields…
S. Lang conjectured in 1974 that a hyperbolic algebraic variety defined over a number field has only finitely many rational points, and its analogue over function fields. We discuss the Nevanlinna-Cartan theory over function fields of arbitrary dimension and apply it for Diophantine property of hyperbolic projective hypersurfaces (homogeneous Diophantine equations) constructed by Masuda-Noguchi. We also deal with the finiteness property of $S$-units points of those Diophantine equations over number fields.
We consider the problem of Diophantine approximation on semisimple algebraic groups by rational points with restricted numerators and denominators and establish a quantitative approximation result for all real points in the group by rational points with any prescribed denominator and an almost prime numerator.
