We associate certain curves over function fields to given algebraic power series and show that bounds on the rank of Kodaira-Spencer map of this curves imply bounds on the exponents of the power series, with more generic curves giving lower exponents. If we transport Vojta's conjecture on height inequality to finite characteristic by modifying it by adding suitable deformation theoretic condition, then we see that the numbers giving rise to general curves approach Roth's bound. We also prove a hierarchy of exponent bounds for approximation by algebraic quantities of bounded degree.
The paper is mostly a survey on recent results in Diophantine approximation, with emphasis on properties of exponents measuring various notions of Diophantine <approximation.
This brief survey deals with multi-dimensional Diophantine approximations in sense of linear form and with simultaneous Diophantine approximations. We discuss the phenomenon of degenerate dimension of linear subspaces generated by the best Diophantine approximations. Originally most of these results have been established by the author in few years ago. Here we collect all of them together and give some new formulations.
In this note, we present an improvement to a recent result due to Beresnevich, Levesley, and Ward (2021) pertaining to weighted simultaneous Diophantine approximation on manifolds.
We apply nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces to compute Diophantine exponents of affine subspaces of $\R^n$ and their nondegenerate submanifolds.
Review of the book: Distribution modulo one and Diophantine approximation, by Yann Bugeaud, Cambridge University Press 2012. ISBN 978-0521111690, 316 pp.
By applying Schmidt's lattice method, we prove results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation modulo 1 for systems of polynomials in a single prime variable provided that certain local conditions are met.
We investigate the problem of best simultaneous Diophantine approximation under a constraint on the denominator, as proposed by Jurkat. New lower estimates for optimal approximation constants are given in terms of critical determinants of suitable star bodies. Tools are results on simultaneous Diophantine approximation of rationals by rationals with smaller denominator. Finally, the approximation results are applied to the decomposition of integer vectors.
We establish an explicit asymptotic formula for the number of rational solutions of intrinsic Diophantine inequalities on simply-connected simple algebraic groups, at arbitrarily small scales.
In this paper we prove transference inequalities for regular and uniform Diophantine exponents in the weighted setting. Our results generalize the corresponding inequalities that exist in the `non-weighted' case.
The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.
In Diophantine approximation, inhomogeneous problems are linked with homogeneous ones by means of the so-called Transference Theorems. We revisit this classical topic by introducing new exponents of Diophantine approximation. We prove that the exponent of approximation to a generic point in R^n by a system of n linear forms is equal to the inverse of the uniform homogeneous exponent associated to the system of dual forms.
We introduce diophantine approximation groups and their associated Kronecker foliations, using them to provide new algebraic and geometric characterizations of $K$-linear and algebraic dependence. As a consequence we find reformulations -- as algebraic and geometric (graph) rigidities -- of the Theorems of Baker and Lindemann-Weierstrass, the Logarithm Conjecture and the Schanuel Conjecture. There is an Appendix describing diophantine approximation groups as model theoretic types.
We discuss several open problems in Diophantine approximation. Among them there are famous Littlewood's and Zaremba's conjectures as well as some new and not so famous problems.
We prove a new quantitative result on the degeneracy of the dimension of the subspace spanned by the best Diophantine approximations for a linear form.
In these notes, we begin by recalling aspects of the classical theory of metric Diophantine approximation; such as theorems of Khintchine, Jarn\'ık, Duffin-Schaeffer and Gallagher. We then describe recent strengthening of various classical statements as well as recent developments in the area of Diophantine approximation on manifolds. The latter includes the well approximable, the badly approximable and the inhomogeneous aspects.
We prove a strong simultaneous Diophantine approximation theorem for values of additive and multiplicative functions provided that the functions have certain regularity on the primes.
Analogues of the classical theorems of Khintchine, Jarnik and Jarnik-Besicovitch in the metrical theory of Diophantine approximation are established for quaternions by applying results on the measure of general `lim sup' sets.
Answering two questions of Beresnevich and Velani, we develop zero-one laws in both simultaneous and multiplicative Diophantine approximation. Our proofs rely on a Cassels-Gallagher type theorem as well as a higher-dimensional analogue of the cross fibering principle of Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani.
We prove a generalization of W.M. Schmidt's theorem related to the Diophantine approximations for a linear form of the type $α_1x_1+α_2x_2 +y$ with {\it positive} integers $x_1,x_2$.
We provide a lower bound for the ratio between the ordinary and uniform exponent of both simultaneous Diophantine approximation and Diophantine approximation by linear forms in any dimension. This lower bound was conjectured by Schmidt and Summerer and already shown in dimension $2$ and $3$. This lower bound is reached at regular systems presented in the context of parametric geometry of numbers, and thus optimal.
The main objective of this paper is to prove a Khintchine type theorem for divergence for linear Diophantine approximation on non-degenerate manifolds, which completes earlier results for convergence.
We first recall the connection, going back to A. Thue, between rational approximation to algebraic numbers and integer solutions of some Diophantine equations. Next we recall the equivalence between several finiteness results on various Diophantine equations. We also give many equivalent statements of Mahler's generalization of the fundamental theorem of Thue. In particular, we show that the theorem of Thue--Mahler for degree $3$ implies the theorem of Thue--Mahler for arbitrary degree $\ge3$, and we relate it with a theorem of Siegel on the rational integral points of the projective line $¶^1…
We prove that the matrix analogue of the Veronese curve is strongly extremal in the sense of Diophantine approximation, thereby resolving a question posed by Beresnevich, Kleinbock, and Margulis ('15) in the affirmative.
Using the Parametric Geometry of Numbers introduced recently by W.M. Schmidt and L. Summerer and results by D. Roy, we establish that the spectrum of the $2n$ exponents of Diophantine approximation in dimension $n\geq3$ is a subset of $\mathbb{R}^{2n}$ with non empty interior.
In this paper we prove an inequality for individual and uniform Diophantine exponents in the case of simultaneous approximation. This inequality is better than Jarnik's for small values of the uniform exponent.
We calculate the measure and Hausdorff dimension of sets of matrices over fields of formal power series with good approximation properties for a restricted set of denominators.
We investigate the distribution of $pθ$ modulo 1, where $θ$ is a complex number which is not contained in $\mathbb{Q}(i)$, and $p$ runs over the Gaussian primes.
Duffin and Schaeffer have generalized the classical theorem of Khintchine in metric Diophantine approximation in the case of any error function under the assumption that all the rational approximants are irreducible. This result is extended to the case where the numerators and the denominators of the rational approximants are related by a congruential constraint stronger than coprimality.
This is the second paper in a series of two in which a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. In this paper, to any real number $θ$ we associate its polynomial diophantine approximation ring: a tri-filtered subring of a nonstandard model of the ring $\mathbb{Z}[X]$. We characterize the filtration structure of the polynomial diophantine approximation ring according to the Mahler class and the Mahler type of $θ$. The arithmetic of polynomial diophantine approximation groups is intro…
In this paper, we consider the intrinsic Diophantine approximation on the triadic Cantor set $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. approximating the points in $\mathcal{K}$ by rational numbers inside $\mathcal{K}$, a question posed by K. Mahler. By using another height function of a rational number in $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. the denominator obtained from its periodic 3-adic expansion, a complete metric theory for this variant intrinsic Diophantine approximation is presented which yields the divergence theory of Mahler's original question.
A paradigm for a global algebraic number theory of the reals is formulated with the purpose of providing a unified setting for algebraic and transcendental number theory. This is achieved through the study of subgroups of nonstandard models of Dedekind domains called diophantine approximation groups. The arithmetic of diophantine approximation groups is defined in a way which extends the ideal-theoretic arithmetic of algebraic number theory, using the structure of an approximate ideal: a bi-filtration by subgroups along which partial products may be performed.
We outline a proof of an analogue of Khintchine's Theorem in R^2, where the ordinary height is replaced by a distance function satisfying an irrationality condition as well as certain decay and symmetry conditions.
In this paper, we extend the theory of simultaneous Diophantine approximation to infinite dimensions. Moreover, we discuss Dirichlet-type theorems in a very general framework and define what it means for such a theorem to be optimal. We show that optimality is implied by but does not imply the existence of badly approximable points.
We discuss the problem of finding optimal exponents in Diophantine estimates involving one real number and, in some cases where such an exponent is known, present some properties of the corresponding extremal numbers.
We give several results related to inhomogeneous approximations to two real numbers and badly approximable numbers. Our results are related to classical theorems by A. Khintchine (1926) and to an original method invented by Y. Peres and W. Schlag (2001).
The goal of this paper is to develop a coherent theory for inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on curves in $R^n$ akin to the well established homogeneous theory. More specifically, the measure theoretic results obtained generalize the fundamental homogeneous theorems of R.C. Baker (1978), Dodson, Dickinson (2000) and Beresnevich, Bernik, Kleinbock, Margulis (2002). In the case of planar curves, the complete Hausdorff dimension theory is developed
In this paper we obtain the Lebesgue and Hausdorff measure results for the set of vectors satisfying infinitely many fully non-linear Diophantine inequalities. The set is associated with a class of linear inhomogeneous partial differential equations whose solubility depends on a certain Diophantine condition. The failure of the Diophantine condition guarantees the existence of a smooth solution.
The paper is devoted to the problem of estimating the constant of the best Diophantine approximations. The estimates of lower bound $ C_n $ for $ n = 5 $ and $ n = 6 $ was improved. The first chapter gives an overview of the history of estimates of the constant of the best Diophantine approximations. In the second chapter sets out the methods and results of numerical experiments leading to estimates of $ C_n $. The third chapter is devoted to estimating some functions by means of which in the fourth chapter we will proof the estimates of $ C_n $ for $ 3 \leq n \leq 6 $.
The nature and origin of exceptional sets associated with the rotation number of circle maps, Kolmogorov-Arnol'd-Moser theory on the existence of invariant tori and the linearisation of complex diffeomorphisms are explained. The metrical properties of these exceptional sets are closely related to fundamental results in the metrical theory of Diophantine approximation. The counterpart of Diophantine approximation in hyperbolic space and a dynamical interpretation which led to the very general notion of `shrinking targets' are sketched and the recent use of flows in homogeneous spaces of lattice…
This text is a slightly expanded version of a survey article on certain aspects of low dimensional dynamics and number theory written after a kind invitation by the editors of the Notices of the American Mathematical Society.
We refine Khintchine Transference Principle which relates the measure of simultaneous rational approximation of an $n$ real numbers with the measure of linear independence of these $n$ numbers. Khintchine's inequalities are known to be optimal. However, they may be sharpened by taking into account two further uniform exponents.
In this paper, we establish asymptotic formulae with optimal errors for the number of rational points that are close to a planar curve, which unify and extend the results of Beresnevich-Dickinson-Velani and Vaughan-Velani. Furthermore, we complete the Lebesgue theory of Diophantine approximation on weakly non-degenerate planar curves that was initially developed by Beresnevich-Zorin in the divergence case.
We give an algorithm that finds a sequence of approximations with Dirichlet coefficients bounded by a constant only depending on the dimension. The algorithm uses the LLL-algorithm for lattice basis reduction. We present a version of the algorithm that runs in polynomial time of the input.
In this paper we discuss a general problem on metrical Diophantine approximation associated with a system of linear forms. The main result is a zero-one law that extends one-dimensional results of Cassels and Gallagher. The paper contains a discussion on possible generalisations including a selection of various open problems.
We prove that the Diophantine equation (a^2 c x^k - 1)(b^2 c y^k - 1) = (abc z^k - 1)^2 has no solutions in positive integers with x, y, z > 1, k \geq 7 and a^2x^k \neq b^2y^k.
