The Weak approximation theorem describes the closure of $G(Q)$ inside $G(Q_p)$ as well as inside
$G(R)$ for $G$ an algebraic group over $Q$; the closure is always an open normal subgroup with finite abelian quotient, and is well understood in a certain sense even if precise
results are not always available (such as for tori!). In this paper,
for a finitely generated subgroup $ L \subset G(Q)$ we consider the topological closure of $ L$ inside $G(Q_p)$
and $G(R)$. The paper is written mostly for $G$ a torus or an abelian variety, but eventually considers a variant of the question for
$G$ a semisimple group. The paper is written with the wishful thinking
that when dealing with questions on topological closure of algebraic points in an algebraic group defined over a number field,
the simplest answers hold, a well-known
principle known as ``Occum's razor''.
We find all solutions of Diophantine equation x^{2}+11^{2k} = y^{n} where x>=1, y>=1, n>=3 and k is natural number. We give p-adic interpretation of this equation.
The goal of this paper is to develop the theory of weighted Diophantine approximation of rational numbers to $p$-adic numbers. Firstly, we establish complete analogues of Khintchine's theorem, the Duffin-Schaeffer theorem and the Jarník-Besicovitch theorem for `weighted' simultaneous Diophantine approximation in the $p$-adic case. Secondly, we obtain a lower bound for the Hausdorff dimension of weighted simultaneously approximable points lying on $p$-adic manifolds. This is valid for very general classes of curves and manifolds and have natural constraints on the exponents of approximation. Th…
For fixed integers $D \geq 0$ and $c \geq 3$, we demonstrate how to use $2$-adic valuation trees of sequences to analyze Diophantine equations of the form $x^2+D=2^cy$ and $x^3+D=2^cy$, for $y$ odd. Further, we show for what values $D \in \mathbb{Z}^+$, the numbers $x^3+D$ will generate infinite valuation trees, which lead to infinite solutions to the above Diophantine equations.
In this paper we study $p$-adic Diophantine approximation on manifolds, specifically multiplicative Diophantine approximation on affine subspaces and a Diophantine dichotomy for analytic $p$-adic manifolds.
In this paper we focus on finding all the factorials expressible as a product of a fixed number of $2k$-nacci numbers with $k \geq 2$. We derive the 2-adic valuation of the $2k$-nacci sequence and use it to establish bounds on the solutions of the initial equation. In addition, we specify a more general family of sequences, for which we can perform a similar procedure. We also investigate a possible connection of these results with $p$-regular sequences.
We find upper and lower bounds on the number of rational points that are $ψ$-approximations of some $n$-dimensional $p$-adic integer. Lattice point counting techniques are used to find the upper bound result, and a Pigeon-hole principle style argument is used to find the lower bound result. We use these results to find the Hausdorff dimension for the set of $p$-adic weighted simultaneously approximable points intersected with $p$-adic coordinate hyperplanes. For the lower bound result we show that the set of rational points that $τ$-approximate a $p$-adic integer form a set of resonant points …
S-arithmetic Khintchine-type theorem for products of non-degenerate analytic p-adic manifolds is proved for the convergence case. In the p-adic case the divergence part is also obtained.
In this part we show that the diophantine equation $X^5+Y^5=\varepsilon^5(1-X^5Y^5)$, where $\varepsilon=\frac{-1+\sqrt{5}}{2}$, has solutions in specific abelian extensions of quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ in which $-d \equiv \pm 1$ (mod $5$). The coordinates of these solutions are values of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$, and are shown to be periodic points of an algebraic function.
All the periodic points of a certain algebraic function related to the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction $r(τ)$ are determined. They turn out to be $0, \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{5}}{2}$, and the conjugates over $\mathbb{Q}$ of the values $r(w_d/5)$, where $w_d$ is one of a specific set of algebraic integers, divisible by the square of a prime divisor of 5, in the field $K_d=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$, as $-d$ ranges over all negative quadratic discriminants for which $\left(\frac{-d}{5}\right) = +1$. This yields new insights on class numbers of orders in the fields $K_d$. Conjecture 1 of Part I is prov…
In this paper we prove complete $p$-adic analogues of Kleinbock's theorems \cite{Kleinbock-extremal, Kleinbock-exponent} on inheritance of Diophantine exponents for affine subspaces. In particular, we answer in the affirmative (and in a stronger form), a conjecture of Kleinbock and Tomanov \cite{KT}, as well as a question of Kleinbock \cite{Kleinbock-exponent}. Our main innovation is the introduction of a new $p$-adic Diophantine exponent which is better suited to homogeneous dynamics, and which we show to be closely related to the exponent considered by Kleinbock and Tomanov.
Solutions of the quartic Fermat equation in ring class fields of odd conductor over quadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-d})$ with $-d \equiv 1$ (mod $8$) are shown to be periodic points of a fixed algebraic function $T(z)$ defined on the punctured disk $0< |z|_2 \le \frac{1}{2}$ of the maximal unramified, algebraic extension $\textsf{K}_2$ of the $2$-adic field $\mathbb{Q}_2$. All ring class fields of odd conductor over imaginary quadratic fields in which the prime $p=2$ splits are shown to be generated by complex periodic points of the algebraic function $T$, and conversely, all but two of …
Linear forms in logarithms have an important role in the theory of Diophantine equations. In this article, we prove explicit $p$-adic lower bounds for linear forms in $p$-adic logarithms of rational numbers using Padé approximations of the second kind.
We study some diophantine properties of automatic real numbers and we present a method to derive irrationality measures for such numbers. As a consequence, we prove that the $b$-adic expansion of a Liouville number cannot be generated by a finite automaton, a conjecture due to Shallit.
We give an alternative proof of Faltings's theorem (Mordell's conjecture): a curve of genus at least two over a number field has finitely many rational points. Our argument utilizes the set-up of Faltings's original proof, but is in spirit closer to the methods of Chabauty and Kim: we replace the use of abelian varieties by a more detailed analysis of the variation of $p$-adic Galois representations in a family of algebraic varieties. The key inputs into this analysis are the comparison theorems of $p$-adic Hodge theory, and explicit topological computations of monodromy. By the same methods w…
In this paper, we consider the intrinsic Diophantine approximation on the triadic Cantor set $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. approximating the points in $\mathcal{K}$ by rational numbers inside $\mathcal{K}$, a question posed by K. Mahler. By using another height function of a rational number in $\mathcal{K}$, i.e. the denominator obtained from its periodic 3-adic expansion, a complete metric theory for this variant intrinsic Diophantine approximation is presented which yields the divergence theory of Mahler's original question.
Let Q be an infinite set of positive integers. Denote by W(Q) the set of n-tuples of real numbers simultaneously tau-well approximable by infinitely many rationals with denominators in Q but only by finitely many rationals with denominators in the complement of Q. The Hausdorff dimension of the liminf set W(Q) is computed when tau > 2 + 1/n. A p-adic analogue of the problem is also studied.
We describe recent work connecting combinatorics and tropical/non-Archimedean geometry to Diophantine geometry, particularly the uniformity conjectures for rational points on curves and for torsion packets of curves. The method of Chabauty--Coleman lies at the heart of this connection, and we emphasize the clarification that tropical geometry affords throughout the theory of $p$-adic integration, especially to the comparison of analytic continuations of $p$-adic integrals and to the analysis of zeros of integrals on domains admitting monodromy.
For an element $r$ of a ring $R$, a Diophantine $D(r)$ $m$-tuple is an $m$-tuple $(a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_m)$ of elements of $R$ such that for all $i,j$ with $i\neq j$, $a_ia_j+r$ is a perfect square in $R$. In this article, we compute and estimate the measures of the sets of $D(r)$ $m$-tuples in the ring $\mathbb{Z}_p$ of $p$-adic integers, as well as its residue field $\mathbb{F}_p$.
We prove that infinite p-adically discrete sets have Diophantine definitions in large subrings of some number fields. First, if K is a totally real number field or a totally complex degree-2 extension of a totally real number field, then there exists a prime p of K and a set of K-primes S of density arbitrarily close to 1 such that there is an infinite p-adically discrete set that is Diophantine over the ring O_{K,S} of S-integers in K. Second, if K is a number field over which there exists an elliptic curve of rank 1, then there exists a set of K-primes S of density 1 and an infinite Diophant…
It is shown that for any translation invariant outer measure M, the M-measure of the intersection of any subset of R^n that is invariant under rational translations and which does not have full Lebesgue measure with an the closure of an open set of positive measure cannot be positive and finite. Analogues for $p$-adic fields and fields of formal power series over a finite field are established. The results are applied to some problems in metric Diophantine approximation.
This paper introduces some methods to determine the simultaneous approximation constants of a class of well approximable numbers $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$. The approach relies on results on the connection between the set of all $s$-adic expansions ($s\geq 2$) of $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$ and their associated approximation constants. As an application, explicit construction of real numbers $ζ_{1},ζ_{2},...,ζ_{k}$ with prescribed approximation properties are deduced and illustrated by Matlab plots.
Recently, Adiceam, Beresnevich, Levesley, Velani and Zorin proved a quantitative version of the convergence case of the Khintchine-Groshev theorem for nondegenerate manifolds, motivated by applications to interference alignment. In the present paper, we obtain analogues of their results for affine subspaces.
In this semi-expository article we solve the diophantine equation $m^5+(4 \cdot 5^4 b^4)mn^4 - n^5=1$ for all integers $b \neq 0$. This gives an example of a family of quintic Thue equations that can be solved completely by using nothing more than Skolem's $p$-adic method. We also give a general introduction to Skolem's method from a modern perspective.
We use a $p$-adic analogue of the analytic subgroup theorem of Wüstholz to deduce the transcendence and linear independence of some new classes of $p$-adic numbers. In particular we give $p$-adic analogues of results of Wüstholz contained in [G. Wüstholz, Some remarks on a conjecture of Waldschmidt, Diophantine approximations and transcendental numbers, Progress in Mathematics 31, Birkhäuser Boston, Boston, MA, (1983), 329-336] and generalizations of results obtained by Bertrand in [D. Bertrand, Sous-groupes à un paramètre $p$-adique de variétés de groupe, Invent. Math. 40 (1977), no. 2, 171-1…
We show that Artin's conjecture concerning p-adic solubility of Diophantine equations fails for infinitely many systems of r homogeneous diagonal equations whenever r>1.
B. Mazur has considered the question of density in the Euclidean topology of the set of ${\Bbb Q}$-rational points on a variety $X$ defined over ${\Bbb Q}$, in particular for Abelian varieties. In this paper we consider the question of closures of the image of finitely generated subgroups of $T({\Bbb Q})$ in $Γ\backslash T({\Bbb R})$ where $T$ is a torus defined over ${\Bbb Q}$, $Γ$ an arithmetic subgroup such that $Γ\backslash T({\Bbb R})$ is compact. Assuming Schanuel's conjecture, we prove that the closures correspond to sub {\it algebraic} tori of $T$.
The main goal of this work is to establish quantitative nondivergence estimates for flows on homogeneous spaces of products of real and $p$-adic Lie groups. These results have applications both to ergodic theory and to Diophantine approximation. Namely, earlier results of Dani (finiteness of locally finite ergodic unipotent-invariant measures on real homogeneous spaces) and Kleinbock-Margulis (strong extremality of nondegenerate submanifolds of $\Bbb R^n$) are generalized to the $S$-arithmetic setting.
We consider irrational fixed points of the Minkowski question mark function $? (x)$, that is irrational solutions of the equation $? (x)=x$. It is easy to see that there exist at least two such points. Although it is not known if there are other fixed points, we prove that the smallest and the greatest fixed points have irrationality measure exponent equal to 2. We give more precise results about the approximation properties of these fixed points. Moreover, in Appendix we introduce a condition from which it follows that there are only two irrational fixed points.
We collect a number of open questions concerning Diophantine equations, Diophantine Approximation and transcendental numbers. Revised version: corrected typos and added references.
Building on work of Davenport and Schmidt, we mainly prove two results. The first one is a version of Gel'fond's transcendence criterion which provides a sufficient condition for a complex or $p$-adic number $ξ$ to be algebraic in terms of the existence of polynomials of bounded degree taking small values at $ξ$ together with most of their derivatives. The second one, which follows from this criterion by an argument of duality, is a result of simultaneous approximation by conjugate algebraic integers for a fixed number $ξ$ that is either transcendental or algebraic of sufficiently large degree…
Diophantine triples taking values in recurrence sequences have recently been studied quite a lot. In particular the question was raised whether or not there are finitely many Diophantine triples in the Tribonacci sequence. We answer this question here in the affirmative. We prove that there are only finitely many triples of integers $1\le u<v<w$ such that $uv+1,uw+1,vw+1$ are Tribonacci numbers. The proof depends on the Subspace theorem.
Let K be a p-adic field (a finite extension of some Q_p) and let K(t) be the field of rational functions over K. We define a kind of quadratic reciprocity symbol for polynomials over K and apply it to prove isotropy for a certain class of quadratic forms over K(t). Using this result, we give an existential definition for the predicate "v_t(x) >= 0" in K(t). This implies undecidability of diophantine equations over K(t).
A formalism of arithmetic partial differential equations (PDEs) is being developed in which one considers several arithmetic differentiations at one fixed prime. In this theory solutions can be defined in algebraically closed p-adic fields. As an application we show that for at least two arithmetic directions every elliptic curve possesses a non-zero arithmetic PDE Manin map of order 1; such maps do not exist in the arithmetic ODE case. Similarly we construct and study "genuinely PDE" differential modular forms. As further applications we derive a Theorem of the Kernel and a Reciprocity Theore…
Answering two questions of Beresnevich and Velani, we develop zero-one laws in both simultaneous and multiplicative Diophantine approximation. Our proofs rely on a Cassels-Gallagher type theorem as well as a higher-dimensional analogue of the cross fibering principle of Beresnevich, Haynes and Velani.
We prove that the matrix analogue of the Veronese curve is strongly extremal in the sense of Diophantine approximation, thereby resolving a question posed by Beresnevich, Kleinbock, and Margulis ('15) in the affirmative.
A basic question of Diophantine approximation, which is the first issue we discuss, is to investigate the rational approximations to a single real number. Next, we consider the algebraic or polynomial approximations to a single complex number, as well as the simultaneous approximation of powers of a real number by rational numbers with the same denominator. Finally we study generalisations of these questions to higher dimensions. Several recent advances have been made by B. Adamczewski, Y. Bugeaud, S. Fischler, M. Laurent, T. Rivoal, D. Roy and W.M. Schmidt, among others. We review some of the…
Let (X,d) be a metric space and (Ω, d) a compact subspace of X which supports a non-atomic finite measure m. We consider `natural' classes of badly approximable subsets of Ω. Loosely speaking, these consist of points in Ωwhich `stay clear' of some given set of points in X. The classical set \Bad of `badly approximable' numbers in the theory of Diophantine approximation falls within our framework as do the sets \Bad(i,j) of simultaneously badly approximable numbers. Under various natural conditions we prove that the badly approximable subsets of Ωhave full Hausdorff dimension. Applications of o…
Motivated by the recent result of Farhi we show that for each $n\equiv \pm 1\pmod{6}$ the title Diophantine equation has at least two solutions in integers. As a consequence, we get that each (even) perfect number is a sum of three cubes of integers. Moreover, we present some computational results concerning the considered equation and state some questions and conjectures.
We study the Hausdorff measure and dimension of the set of intrinsically simultaneously $ψ$-approximable points on a curve, surface, etc., given as a graph of integer valued polynomials. We obtain complete answers to these questions for algebraically "nice" manifolds. This generalizes earlier work done in the case of curves.
This article discusses the question - how to estimate the number of solutions of algebraic Diophantine equations with natural coefficients using Circular method developed by Hardy and Littlewood. This paper considers the estimate of the number of solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation: $c_1x_1^{k_1}+c_2x_2^{k_2}+...+c_sx_s^{k_s}=n$. The author found the asymptotic estimate for the number of solutions of this equation as a function of the value $n$, if all coefficients and $n$ are natural. This article analyzes the results and shows that these estimates of the number of natural solutions o…
In 2007, B. Poonen (unpublished) studied the $p$--adic closure of a subgroup of rational points on a commutative algebraic group. More recently, J. Bellaïche asked the same question for the special case of Abelian varieties. These problems are $p$--adic analogues of a question raised earlier by B. Mazur on the density of rational points for the real topology. For a simple Abelian variety over the field of rational numbers, we show that the actual $p$--adic rank is at least the third of the expected value.
The u-invariant of a field is the maximum dimension of ansiotropic quadratic forms over the field. It is an open question whether the u-invariant of function fields of p-aidc curves is 8. In this paper, we answer this question in the affirmative for function fields of non-dyadic p-adic curves.
We study solvability of the Diophantine equation \begin{equation*} \frac{n}{2^{n}}=\sum_{i=1}^{k}\frac{a_{i}}{2^{a_{i}}}, \end{equation*} in integers $n, k, a_{1},\ldots, a_{k}$ satisfying the conditions $k\geq 2$ and $a_{i}<a_{i+1}$ for $i=1,\ldots,k-1$. The above Diophantine equation (of polynomial-exponential type) was mentioned in the monograph of Erdős and Graham, where several questions were stated. Some of these questions were already answered by Borwein and Loring. We extend their work and investigate other aspects of Erdős and Graham equation. First of all, we obtain the upper bound f…
Motivated by questions in cryptography, we look for diophantine equations that are hard to solve but for which determining the number of solutions is easy.
We study the Diophantine properties of a new class of transcendental real numbers which contains, among others, Roy's extremal numbers, Bugeaud-Laurent Sturmian continued fractions, and more generally the class of Sturmian type numbers. We compute, for each real number $ξ$ of this set, several exponents of Diophantine approximation to the pair $(ξ,ξ^2)$, together with $ω_2^*(ξ)$ and $\widehatω_2^*(ξ)$, the so-called ordinary and uniform exponent of approximation to $ξ$ by algebraic numbers of degree $\leq 2$. As an application, we get new information on the set of values taken by $\widehatω_2^…
Let $α$ and $β$ be irrational real numbers and $0<\F<1/30$. We prove a precise estimate for the number of positive integers $q\leq Q$ that satisfy $\|qα\|\cdot\|qβ\|<\F$. If we choose $\F$ as a function of $Q$ we get asymptotics as $Q$ gets large, provided $\F Q$ grows quickly enough in terms of the (multiplicative) Diophantine type of $(α,β)$, e.g., if $(α,β)$ is a counterexample to Littlewood's conjecture then we only need that $\F Q$ tends to infinity. Our result yields a new upper bound on sums of reciprocals of products of fractional parts, and sheds some light on a recent question of Lê …
For $A \subseteq \mathbb{N}$, the question of when $R(A) = \{a/a' : a, a' \in A\}$ is dense in the positive real numbers $\mathbb{R}_+$ has been examined by many authors over the years. In contrast, the $p$-adic setting is largely unexplored. We investigate conditions under which $R(A)$ is dense in the $p$-adic numbers. Techniques from elementary, algebraic, and analytic number theory are employed in this endeavor. We also pose many open questions that should be of general interest.
We investigate the question of how well points on a nondegenerate $k$-dimensional submanifold $M \subseteq \mathbb R^d$ can be approximated by rationals also lying on $M$, establishing an upper bound on the "intrinsic Dirichlet exponent" for $M$. We show that relative to this exponent, the set of badly intrinsically approximable points is of full dimension and the set of very well intrinsically approximable points is of zero measure. Our bound on the intrinsic Dirichlet exponent is phrased in terms of an explicit function of $k$ and $d$ which does not seem to have appeared in the literature pr…
For a nonzero integer $n$, a set of distinct nonzero integers $\{a_1,a_2,\ldots,a_m\}$ such that $a_ia_j+n$ is a perfect square for all $1\leq i<j\leq m$, is called a Diophantine $m$-tuple with the property $D(n)$ or simply $D(n)$-set. $D(1)$-sets are known as simply Diophantine $m$-tuples. Such sets were first studied by Diophantus of Alexandria, and since then by many authors. It is natural to ask if there exists a Diophantine $m$-tuple ($D(1)$-set) which is also a $D(n)$-set for some $n\neq 1$. This question was raised by Kihel and Kihel in 2001. They conjectured that there are no Diophanti…
The primary goal of this article is to study $p$-adic Beilinson conjectures in the presence of exceptional zeros for Artin motives over CM fields. In more precise terms, we address a question raised by Hida and Tilouine on the order of vanishing of Katz $p$-adic $L$-functions associated to CM fields, by means of a leading term formula we prove in terms of Rubin-Stark elements. In the particular case when the CM field in question is imaginary quadratic, our leading term formula and its consequences we record herein are unconditional.
