Studying the Diophantine problem in finitely generated rings and algebras via bilinear maps

We study systems of polynomial equations in several classes of finitely generated rings and algebras. For each ring $R$ (or algebra) in one of these classes we obtain an interpretation by systems of equations of a ring of integers $O$ of a finite field extension of either $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$, for some prime $p$ and variable $t$. This implies that the Diophantine problem (decidability of systems of polynomial equations) in $O$ is Karp-reducible to the same problem in $R$. The hyperbolic geometry of Markov's theorem on Diophantine approximation and quadratic forms

Markov's theorem classifies the worst irrational numbers with respect to rational approximation and the indefinite binary quadratic forms whose values for integer arguments stay farthest away from zero. The main purpose of this paper is to present a new proof of Markov's theorem using hyperbolic geometry. The main ingredients are a dictionary to translate between hyperbolic geometry and algebra/number theory, and some very basic tools borrowed from modern geometric Teichmüller theory. Automata and automatic sequences

In the following pages we discuss infinite sequences defined on a finite alphabet, and more specially those which are generated by finite automata. We have divided our paper into seven parts which are more or less self-contained. Needless to say, we feel that the order we propose is the most natural one. References appear at the end of each one of the parts which implies some redundancy. Extra references are listed at the very end of our paper.

Finite automata and algebraic extensions of function fields

We give an automata-theoretic description of the algebraic closure of the rational function field F_q(t) over a finite field, generalizing a result of Christol. The description takes place within the Hahn-Mal'cev-Neumann field of "generalized power series" over F_q. Our approach includes a characterization of well-ordered sets of rational numbers whose base p expansions are generated by a finite automaton, as well as some techniques for computing in the algebraic closure; these include an adaptation to positive characteristic of Newton's algorithm for finding local expansions of plane curves. …
