S. Lang conjectured in 1974 that a hyperbolic algebraic variety defined over a number field has only finitely many rational points, and its analogue over function fields. We discuss the Nevanlinna-Cartan theory over function fields of arbitrary dimension and apply it for Diophantine property of hyperbolic projective hypersurfaces (homogeneous Diophantine equations) constructed by Masuda-Noguchi. We also deal with the finiteness property of $S$-units points of those Diophantine equations over number fields.
We show that an earlier conjecture of the author, on diophantine approximation of rational points on varieties, implies the ``abc conjecture'' of Masser and Oesterl'e. In fact, a weak form of the former conjecture is sufficient, involving an extra hypothesis that the variety and divisor admit a faithful group action of a certain type. Analogues of this weaker conjecture are proved in the split function field case of characteristic zero, and in the case of holomorphic curves (Nevanlinna theory). The proof of the latter involves a geometric generalization of the classical lemma on the logarithmi…
The $abc$ conjecture predicts a highly non trivial upper bound for the height of an algebraic point in terms of its discriminant and its intersection with a fixed divisor of the projective line counted without multiplicity. We describe the two independent proofs of the strong $abc$ conjecture over function fields given by McQuillan and Yamanoi. The first proof relies on tools from differential and algebraic geometry; the second relies on analytic and topological methods. They correspond respectively to the Nevanlinna and the Ahlfors approach to the Nevanlinna Second Main Theorem.
A sieve for rational points on suitable varieties is developed, together with applications to counting rational points in thin sets, the number of varieties in a family which are everywhere locally soluble, and to the notion of friable rational points with respect to divisors. In the special case of quadrics, sharper estimates are obtained by developing a version of the Selberg sieve for rational points.
Let $E/\mathbb{Q}$ be an elliptic curve over the rational numbers. It is known, by the work of Bombieri and Zannier, that if $E$ has full rational $2$-torsion, the number $N_E(B)$ of rational points with Weil height bounded by $B$ is $\exp\left(O\left(\frac{\log B}{\sqrt{\log\log B}}\right)\right)$. In this paper we exploit the method of descent via $2$-isogeny to extend this result to elliptic curves with just one nontrivial rational $2$-torsion point. Moreover, we make use of a result of Petsche to derive the stronger upper bound $N_{E}(B) = \exp\left(O\left(\frac{\log B}{\log\log B}\right)\…
In this paper I demonstrate that any pair (m, n) of non-zero and distinct rational numbers may have, at most, four representations as the product of two rational factors such that the sum of factors of m coincides with the sum of factors of n. In the second part of the paper I derive the properties of elliptic curves such that the cubic has rational roots that satisfy this property
We provide an asymptotic estimate for the number of rational points of bounded height on a non-singular conic over the rationals. The estimate is uniform in the coefficients of the underlying quadratic form.
We examine the counting function for rational points on conics, and show how the point where the asymptotic behaviour begins depends on the size of the smallest zero.
Richard Guy asked for the largest set of points which can be placed in the plane so that their pairwise distances are rational numbers. In this article, we consider such a set of rational points restricted to a given hyperbola. To be precise, for rational numbers $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$ such that the quantity $D = \bigl(a \, d - b \, c \bigr) / \bigl(2 \, a^2 \bigr)$ is defined and nonzero, we consider rational distance sets on the conic section $a \, x \, y + b \, x + c \, y + d = 0$. We show that, if the elliptic curve $Y^2 = X^3 - D^2 \, X$ has infinitely many rational points, then there are…
We investigate in a statistical fashion the smallest height of a rational point on a Fano hypersurface defined over the field of rational numbers. Along the way, we establish an average version of Manin's conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height on Fano varieties for the complete family of Fano hypersurfaces of fixed degree and dimension.
We prove an estimate on the number of rational points on the Grassmannian variety of bounded twisted height, refining the classical results of Schmidt ([12]) and Thunder ([20]) over the rational field: most importantly, our formula counts all points. Among the consequences are a couple of new implications on the classical subject of counting rational points on flag varieties.
We searched up to height $10^7$ for rational points on diagonal quartic surfaces. The computations fill several gaps in earlier lists computed by Pinch, Swinnerton-Dyer, and Bright.
We give quantitative bounds for the number of quasi-integral points in orbits of semigroups of rational maps under some conditions, generalizing previous work of L. C. Hsia and J. Silverman (2011) for orbits generated by the iterations of one rational map.
Let $n$ be a positive integer. We show that a unit rational space vector whose multiple by $n$ is an integer vector can be extended to a rational orthonormal basis whose all members have the same property.
We consider the structure of rational points on elliptic curves in Weierstrass form. Let x(P)=A_P/B_P^2 denote the $x$-coordinate of the rational point P then we consider when B_P can be a prime power. Using Faltings' Theorem we show that for a fixed power greater than 1, there are only finitely many rational points. Where descent via an isogeny is possible we show, with no restrictions on the power, that there are only finitely many rational points, these points are bounded in number in an explicit fashion, and that they are effectively computable.
Building on recent work of Bhargava--Elkies--Schnidman and Kriz--Li, we produce infinitely many smooth cubic surfaces defined over the field of rational numbers that contain rational points.
We show that, for every prime number p, there exist infinitely many K3 surfaces over Q whose rational points lie dense in the space of p-adic points. We also show that there exists a K3 surface over Q whose rational points lie dense in the space of p-adic points for all prime numbers p with p congruent to 3 mod 4 and greater than 7.
We give explicit and asymptotic lower bounds for the quantity $|e^{s/t}-M/N|$ by studying a generalized continued fraction expansion of $e^{s/t}$. In cases $|s|\geq 3$ we improve existing results by extracting a large common factor from the numerators and the denominators of the convergents of that generalized continued fraction.
Using the division polynomials for elliptic curves in Weierstrass form, it shown that the group of rational points on the curve $H: ky(yy - 1) = lx(xx - 1)$ is torsion-free.
We prove that a positive proportion of squarefree integers are congruent numbers such that the canonical height of the lowest non-torsion rational point on the corresponding elliptic curve satisfies a strong lower bound.
In this paper we give a method for studying global rational points on certain quotients of Shimura curves by Atkin-Lehner involutions. We obtain explicit conditions on such quotients for rational points to be ``trivial'' (coming from CM points only) and exhibit an explicit infinite family of such quotients satisfying these conditions.
Based on computational evidence, we formulate a number of conjectures on the distribution of rational points on curves of genus 2 over the rational numbers, in terms of the size of the coefficients of an equation of the form y^2 = f(x) >.
If P is an algebraic point on a commutative group scheme A/K, then P is _almost_rational_ if no two non-trivial Galois conjugates sigma(P), tau(P), have sum equal to 2P. In this paper, we classify almost rational torsion points on semistable elliptic curves over Q.
We give examples of sequences of smooth non-isotrivial curves for every genus at least two, defined over a rational function field of positive characteristic, such that the (finite) number of rational points of the curves in the sequence cannot be uniformly bounded.
In this paper we consider the density of rational points on the "stacky" curve $\mathcal{X}(\mathbb{P}^1;0,2;1,2;\infty,2)$ which is $\mathbb{P}^1$ with three half points, with respect to the so-called Ellenberg-Satriano-Zuerick-Brown height. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Ellenberg.
Guo and Yang give defining equations for all geometrically hyperelliptic Shimura curves $X_0(D,N)$. In this paper we compute the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational points on the Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves using a variety of techniques. We also determine which rational points are CM for many of these curves.
We prove several results on the number of rational points on open subsets of Kummer varieties of arbitrary dimension. Some of our results are unconditional, and others depend on the Parity Conjecture (a corollary of the Conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer). As examples, we show that (conditional on the Parity Conjecture) all odd-dimension Kummer varieties over Q which are quotients of absolutely simple abelian varieties have dense rational points, and we construct an infinite family of K3 surfaces with dense rational points.
The classification of elliptic curves E over the rationals Q is studied according to their torsion subgroups E_{tors}(Q) of rational points. Explicit criteria for the classification are given when E_{tors}(Q) are cyclic groups with even orders. The generator points P of E_{tors}(Q) are also explicitly presented in each case. These results, together with recent results of K. Ono, completely solve the problem of the mentioned explicit classification when E has a rational point of order 2.
We obtain an improvement and broad generalisation of a result of N. Ailon and Z. Rudnick (2004) on common zeros of shifted powers of polynomials. Our approach is based on reducing this question to a more general question of counting intersections of level curves of complex functions. We treat this question via classical tools of complex analysis and algebraic geometry.
Given a projective intersection of two quadrics X in at least 9 variables, the quantitative behaviour of the rational points on X is investigated under the assumption that X contains a pair of conjugate singular points defined over the Gaussians.
In this paper, we construct some families of infinitely many hyperelliptic curves of genus $2$ with exactly two rational points. In the proof, we first show that the Mordell-Weil ranks of these hyperelliptic curves are $0$ and then determine the sets of rational points by using the Lutz-Nagell type theorem for hyperelliptic curves which was proven by Grant.
In this paper, we investigate the existence of a point in the plane of a unit polygon, that is at rational distance from each vertex of the polygon. A negative answer is obtained in almost all cases.
We find an asymptotic formula for the number of rational points near planar curves. More precisely, if $f:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a sufficiently smooth function defined on the interval $[η,ξ]$, then the number of rational points with denominator no larger than $Q$ that lie within a $δ$-neighborhood of the graph of $f$ is shown to be asymptotically equivalent to $(ξ-η)δQ^2$.
We provide a complete classification of possible graphs of rational preperiodic points of quadratic rational functions defined over the rationals with a rational periodic critical point of period 3, under two assumptions: that these functions have no periodic points of period at least 5 and the conjectured enumeration of points on a certain genus 6 affine plane curve. We show that there are exactly six such possible graphs, and that rational functions satisfying the conditions above have at most eleven rational preperiodic points.
Upper and lower bounds, of the expected order of magnitude, are obtained for the number of rational points of bounded height on any quartic del Pezzo surface over $\mathbb{Q}$ that contains a conic defined over $\mathbb{Q}$.
We report on progress in the qualitative study of rational points on rationally connected varieties over number fields, also examining integral points, zero-cycles, and non-rationally connected varieties. One of the main objectives is to highlight and explain the many recent interactions with analytic number theory.
In this paper, we examine how well a rational point P on an algebraic variety X can be approximated by other rational points. We conjecture that if P lies on a rational curve, then the best approximations to P on X can be chosen to lie along a rational curve. We prove this conjecture for a wide range of examples, and for a great many more examples we deduce our conjecture from Vojta's Main Conjecture.
I provide methods of constructing elliptic and hyperelliptic curves over global fields with interesting rational points over the given fields or over large field extensions. I also provide a elliptic curves defined over any given number field equipped with a rational point, (resp. with two rational points) of infinite order over the given number field, and elliptic curves over the rationals with two rational points over `simplest cubic fields.' I also provide hyperelliptic curves of genus exceeding any given number over any given number fields with points (over the given number field) which sp…
Let $S$ be the collection of quadratic polynomial maps, and degree $2$-rational maps whose automorphism groups are isomorphic to $C_2$ defined over the rational field. Assuming standard conjectures of Poonen and Manes on the period length of a periodic point under the action of a map in $S$, we give a complete description of triples $(f_1,f_2,p)$ such that $p$ is a rational periodic point for both $f_i\in S$, $i=1,2$. We also show that no more than three quadratic polynomial maps can possess a common periodic point over the rational field. In addition, under these hypotheses we show that two n…
A complex projective manifold is rationally connected, resp. rationally simply connected, if finite subsets are connected by a rational curve, resp. the spaces parameterizing these connecting rational curves are themselves rationally connected. We prove that a projective scheme over a global function field with vanishing "elementary obstruction" has a rational point if it deforms to a rationally simply connected variety in characteristic 0. This gives new, uniform proofs over these fields of the Period-Index Theorem, the quasi-split case of Serre's "Conjecture II", and Lang's $C_2$ property.
We prove a lower bound that agrees with Manin's prediction for the number of rational points of bounded height on the Fermat cubic surface. As an application we provide a simple counterexample to Manin's conjecture over the rationals.
Let $k$ be an algebraic closed field of characteristic zero. Let $K$ be the rational function field $K=k(t)$. Let $ϕ$ be a non isotrivial rational function in $K(z)$. We prove a bound for the cardinality of the set of $K$--rational preperiodic points for $ϕ$ in terms of the number of places of bad reduction and the degree $d$ of $ϕ$.
For a large class of isotrivial rational elliptic surfaces (with section), we show that the set of rational points is dense for the Zariski topology, by carefully studying variations of root numbers among the fibers of these surfaces. We also prove that these surfaces satisfy a variant of weak-weak approximation. Our results are conditional on the finiteness of Tate-Shafarevich groups for elliptic curves over the field of rational numbers.
Let X be a non-singular projective hypersurface of degree 4, which is defined over the rational numbers. Assume that X has dimension 39 or more, and that X contains a real point and p-adic points for every prime p. Then X is shown to contain infinitely many rational points.
In this paper,we count the rational points on the weighted projective spaces defined over number fields w.r.t. ``size''. An asymptotic formula which generalizes the result of Schanuel's ``Heights in number fields'' is obtained. Furthermore, we count also the rational points on the product of weighted projective spaces.
Motivated by a recent question of Peyre, we apply the Hardy-Littlewood circle method to count "sufficiently free" rational points of bounded height on arbitrary smooth projective hypersurfaces of low degree that are defined over the rational numbers.
We show that the motivic zeta functions of smooth, geometrically connected curves with no rational points are rational functions. This was previously known only for curves whose smooth projective models have a rational point on each connected component. In the course of the proof we study the class of a Severi-Brauer scheme over a general base in the Grothendieck ring of varieties.
We show that the count of rational points by de la Bretèche, Browning and Salberger on the Cayley ruled cubic surface extends to all non-normal integral hypercubics which are not cones.
We investigate Fano varieties defined over a number field that contain subvarieties whose number of rational points of bounded height is comparable to the total number on the variety.
