The main purpose of this paper is to prove the Iitaka conjecture $C_{n,m}$ on the assumption that the sufficiently general fibers have maximal Albanese dimension.
In the present paper, we study the (twisted) 3-canonical map of varieties of Albanese fiber dimension one. Based on a theorem about the regularity of direct image of canonical sheaves, we prove that the 3-canonical map is generically birational when the genus of a general fiber of the Albanese map is 2.
In this paper, we study the Albanese morphisms in positive characteristic. We prove that the Albanese morphism of a variety with nef anti-canonical divisor is an algebraic fiber space, under the assumption that the general fiber is $F$-pure. Furthermore, we consider a notion of $F$-splitting for morphisms, and investigate it of the Albanese morphisms. We show that an $F$-split variety has $F$-split Albanese morphism, and that the $F$-split Albanese morphism is an algebraic fiber space. As an application, we provide a new characterization of abelian varieties.
In this paper we prove that for any smooth projective variety of Albanese fiber dimension two and of general type, the 6-canonical map is birational. And we also show that the 5-canonical map is birational for any such variety with some geometric restrictions.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety of Albanese fiber dimension 1 and of general type. We prove that the translates through 0 of all components of $V^0(ω_X)$ generate $\Pic^0(X)$. We then study the pluricanonical maps of $X$. We show that $|4K_X|$ induces a birational map.
We study algebraic fiber spaces $f:X \longrightarrow Y$ where $Y$ is of maximal Albanese dimension. In particular we give an effective version a theorem of Kawamata: If $P_m(X)=1$ for some $m \ge 2$, then the Albanese map of $X$ is surjective. Combining this with \cite{CH} it follows that $X$ is birational to an abelian variety if and only if $P_2(X)=1$ and $q(X)= \text{\rm dim} (X)$.
We prove that every smooth projective variety with maximal Albanese dimension has a good minimal model. We also treat Ueno's problem on subvarieties of Abelian varieties.
Let $X$ be a projective, normal, minimal and Gorenstein $n$-dimensional complex variety of general type. Suppose $X$ is of maximal Albanese dimension. We prove that $K^n_X \ge 2 n! χ(K_X)$
We show that if X is a nonsingular projective variety of general type over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic and X has maximal Albanese dimension and the Albanese map is separable, then |4K_X| induces a birational map.
We study and obtain Slope inequalities for fibred irregular varieties of non-maximal Albanese dimension. We give a comparison theorem between Clifford-Severi and Slope inequalities for this type of fibrations. We also obtain a set of Slope inequalities considering the geometry of the Albanese map and the associated eventual maps.
We prove that the tetracanonical map of a variety $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension induces the Iitaka fibration. Moreover, if $X$ is of general type, then the tricanonical map is birational.
We prove the so-called Severi inequality, stating that the invariants of a minimal smooth complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension satisfy: K^2_S >= 4χ(S).
We study the birational geometry of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. In particular we discuss criteria for a generically finite morphism of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension to be birational; we give a new characterization of Theta divisors; we study the Albanese map and refine some of the results of Kollár; finally we use these results to birationally classify varieties with $P_3(X)=2$ and $q(X)=dim (X)$. Our method combines the generic vanishing theorems of Green and Lazarsfeld, the theory of Fourier Mukai transforms and the results of Kollàr on higher direct images of dualizin…
Let $f: X\to Y$ be a surjective morphism of smooth $n$-dimensional projective varieties, with $Y$ of maximal Albanese dimension. Hacon and Pardini studied the structure of $f$ assuming $P_m(X)=P_m(Y)$ for some $m\geq 2$. We extend their result by showing that, under the above assumtions, $f$ is birationally equivalent to a quotient by a finite abelian group. We also study the pluricanonical map of varieties of maximal Albanese dimesnion. The main result is that the linear series $|5K_X|$ incuces the Iitaka model of $X$.
In this note, I review an aspect of some new techniques introduced recently in collaboration with Miguel Ángel Barja and Rita Pardini: the construction of the continuous rank function. I give a sketch of how to use this function to prove the Barja-Clifford-Pardini-Severi inequalities for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and to obtain the classification of varieties satisfying the equalities.
Given a smooth complex projective variety X, a line bundle L of X an element v of H^1(O_X) and a section s in H^0(L) that deforms to first order in the direction v, we give a sufficient condition on v in terms of Koszul cohomology for this first order deformation to extend to an analytic deformation. We apply this result to improve known results on the paracanonical system of a variety of maximal Albanese dimension, due to Beauville in the case of surfaces and to Lazarsfeld-Popa in higher dimension. In particular, we prove the inequality p_g(X)>=χ(K_X)+q(X)-1 for a variety X of maximal Albanes…
Let $f: X \to B$ be a relatively minimal fibration of maximal Albanese dimension from a variety $X$ of dimension $n \ge 2$ to a curve $B$ defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We prove that $K_{X/B}^n \ge 2n! χ_f$, which was conjectured by Barja in [2]. Via the strategy outlined in [5], it also leads to a new proof of the Severi inequality for varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. Moreover, when the equality holds and $χ_f > 0$, we prove that the general fiber $F$ of $f$ has to satisfy the Severi equality that $K_F^{n-1} = 2(n-1)! χ(F, ω_F)$. We also prove some …
We relate the existence of some surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension to the existence of some monodromy representations of the braid group $\mathsf{B}_2(C_2)$ in the symmetric group $\mathsf{S}_n$. Furthermore, we compute the number of such representations up to $n=9$, and we analyze the cases $n \in \{2, \, 3, \, 4\}$. For $n=2, \, 3$ we recover some surfaces with $p_g=q=2$ recently studied (with different methods) by the author and his collaborators, whereas for $n=4$ we obtain some conjecturally new examples.
In this paper we study the cohomology of smooth projective complex surfaces $S$ of general type with invariants $p_g = q = 2$ and surjective Albanese morphism. We show that on a Hodge-theoretic level, the cohomology is described by the cohomology of the Albanese variety and a K3 surface $X$ that we call the K3 partner of $S$. Furthermore, we show that in suitable cases we can geometrically construct the K3 partner $X$ and an algebraic correspondence in $S \times X$ that relates the cohomology of $S$ and $X$. Finally, we prove the Tate and Mumford-Tate conjectures for those surfaces $S$ that li…
Let $(X,B)$ be a log canonical pair over a normal variety $Z$ with maximal Albanese dimension. If $K_X+B$ is relatively abundant over $Z$ (for example, $K_X+B$ is relatively big over $Z$), then we prove that $K_X+B$ is abundant. In particular, the subadditvity of Kodaira dimensions $κ(K_X+B) \geq κ(K_F+B_F)+ κ(Z)$ holds, where $F$ is a general fiber, $K_F+B_F= (K_X+B)|_F$, and $κ(Z)$ means the Kodaira dimension of a smooth model of $Z$. We discuss several variants of this result in Section 4. We also give a remark on the log Iitaka conjecture for log canonical pairs in Section 5.
In this thesis we looked into three different problems which share, as a common factor, the exstensive use of the Fourier--Mukai transform as research tool. In the first Part we investigated the syzygies of Kummer varieties (i.e. quotients of abelian varieties by the $\mathbb{Z}/2\Z$-action induced by the group operation), extending to higher syzygies results on projective normality and degree of equations of Sasaki, Kempf, and Khaled. The second Part of this Thesis (partially written in collaboration with Z.Jiang and M. Lahoz) is dedicated to the study of pluricanonical linear systems on vari…
Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective algebraic variety of maximal Albanese dimension. We give a characterization of $κ(X)$ in terms of the set $V^0(X,ω_{X})$ $:=\{P\in {\text{\rm Pic}}^0(X)|h^0(X, ω_X \otimes P) \ne 0\}$. An immediate consequence of this is that the Kodaira dimension $κ(X)$ is invariant under smooth deformations. We then study the pluricanonical maps $ϕ_m:X -> \Bbb{P} (H^0(X,mK_X))$. We prove that if $X$ is of general type, $ϕ_m$ is generically finite for $m\geq 5$ and birational for $m\geq 5 \text{\rm dim} (X) +1$. More generally, we show that for $m\geq 6$ the image of $ϕ_…
In this short article we show that if $(X, B)$ is a compact Kähler klt pair of maximal Albanese dimension, then it has a good minimal model, i.e. there is a bimeromorphic contraction $ϕ:X\dashrightarrow X'$ such that $K_{X'}+B'$ is semi-ample.
Given a minimal surface equipped with a generically finite map to an Abelian variety, we give an optimal bound on the canonical degree of a rational or an elliptic curve. As a corollary, we obtain the finiteness of rational and elliptic curves on any surface of general type with two linearly independent regular one forms.
I prove that for any complex projective variety $X$ and a sufficiently large integer $N$ all the fibers of Albanese map of the $N$-th configuration space of $X$ are dominated by smooth connected projective varieties with vanishing ${\rm H}^1$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective complex variety of maximal Albanese dimension, and let $L \to X$ be a big line bundle. We prove that the moving Seshadri constants of the pull-backs of $L$ to suitable finite abelian étale covers of $X$ are arbitrarily large. As an application, given any integer $k\geq 1$, there exists an abelian étale cover $p\colon X' \to X$ such that the adjoint system $\big|K_{X'} + p^*L \big|$ separates $k$-jets away from the augmented base locus of $p^*L$, and the exceptional locus of the pull-back of the Albanese map of $X$ under $p$.
Let $a_X:X\rightarrow \mathrm{Alb}\, X$ be the Albanese map of a smooth complex projective variety. Roughly speaking in this note we prove that for all $i \geq 0$ and $α\in \mathrm{Pic}^0\, X$, the cohomology ranks $h^i(\mathrm{Alb}\, X, \,{a_X}_* ω_X\otimes P_α)$ are derived invariants. In the case of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension this proves conjectures of Popa and Lombardi-Popa -including the derived invariance of the Hodge numbers $h^{0,j}$ -- and a weaker version of them for arbitrary varieties. Finally we provide an application to derived invariance of certain irregular fibrati…
In this paper, we collect basic properties of the Albanese dimension and explain how to generalize the main theorem of [F2](math.AG/0204262). This paper is a supplement and a generalization of [F2]. We also prove an inequality of irregularities for algebraic fiber spaces in the appendix, which is an exposition of Fujita-Kawamata's semi-positivity theorem.
Let f:X->Y be an algebraic fiber space such that the general fiber has a good minimal model. We show that if f is the Iitaka fibration or if f is the Albanese map of relative dimension no more than three, then X has a good minimal model.
We study smooth complex projective varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying with vanishing holomorphic Euler characteristic. We prove that the Albanese variety of $X$ has at least three simple factors. Examples were constructed by Ein and Lazarsfeld, and we prove that in dimension 3, these examples are (up to abelian étale covers) the only ones. By results of Ueno, another source of examples is provided by varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type with $p_g(X)=1$. Examples were constructed by Chen and Hacon, and again, we prove that in di…
We study products of irreducible theta divisors from two points of view. On the one hand, we characterize them as normal subvarieties of abelian varieties such that a desingularization has holomorphic Euler characteristic 1. On the other hand, we identify them up to birational equivalence among all varieties of maximal Albanese dimension. We also describe the structure of maximal Albanese dimension varieties X with holomorphic Euler characteristic 1 and irregularity 2dim X-1.
We continue our study on smooth complex projective varieties $X$ of maximal Albanese dimension and of general type satisfying $χ(X, ω_X)=0$. We formulate a conjectural characterization of such varieties and prove this conjecture when the Albanese variety has only three simple factors.
For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional assumptions, that if ρ(C, r) is non negative then W^r(C,X) is nonempty of dimension bigger or equal to ρ(C,r). As an application, we derive lower bounds for h^0(K_D) for a divisor D that moves linearly o…
We show that if $X$ is a smooth complex projective variety with Kodaira dimension $0$ then the Kodaira dimension of a general fiber of its Albanese map is at most $h^0(Ω^1 _X)$.
We study normal compact Kähler spaces whose rational cohomology ring is isomorphic to that of a complex torus. We call them rational cohomology tori. We classify, up to dimension three, those with rational singularities. We then give constraints on the degree of the Albanese morphism and the number of simple factors of the Albanese variety for rational cohomology tori of general type (hence projective) with rational singularities. Their properties are related to the birational geometry of smooth projective varieties of general type, maximal Albanese dimension, and with vanishing holomorphic Eu…
From the point of view of uniform bounds for the birationality of pluricanonical maps, irregular varieties of general type and maximal Albanese dimension behave similarly to curves. In fact Chen-Hacon showed that, at least when their holomorphic Euler characteristic is positive, the tricanonical map of such varieties is always birational. In this paper we study the bicanonical map. We consider the natural subclass of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension formed by primitive varieties of Albanese general type. We prove that the only such varieties with non-birational bicanonical map are the n…
We present a simplified proof for a recent theorem by Junyan Cao and Mihai Paun, confirming a special case of Iitaka's conjecture: if $f \colon X\to Y$ is an algebraic fiber space, and if the Albanese mapping of $Y$ is generically finite over its image, then we have the inequality of Kodaira dimensions $κ(X)\geq κ(Y)+κ(F)$, where $F$ denotes a general fiber of $f$. We include a detailed survey of the main algebraic and analytic techniques, especially the construction of singular hermitian metrics on pushforwards of adjoint bundles (due to Berndtsson, Paun, and Takayama).
Let $X$ be a minimal surface of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with irregularity $q\geq 2$. We show that $K_X^2\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_X)+4(q-2)$ if $K_X^2<\frac92χ(\mathcal O_X)$, and also obtain the characterization of the equality. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of Manetti on the geography of irregular surfaces if $K_X^2\geq 36(q-2)$ or $χ(\mathcal O_X)\geq 8(q-2)$, and we also prove a conjecture that surfaces of general type and maximal Albanese dimension with $K_X^2=4χ(\mathcal O_X)$ are exactly the resolution of double covers of abelian surfaces branched over ample divis…
We study the Albanese image of a compact Kähler manifold whose geometric genus is one. We prove that if the Albanese map is not surjective, then the manifold maps surjectively onto an ample divisor in some abelian variety, and in many cases the ample divisor is a theta divisor. With a further natural assumption on the topology of the manifold, we prove that the manifold is an algebraic fiber space over a genus two curve. Finally we apply these results to study the geometry of a compact Kähler manifold which has the same Hodge numbers as those of an abelian variety of the same dimension.
Let S be a smooth minimal complex projective surface of maximal Albanese dimension. Under the assumption that the canonical class of S is ample and the irregularity of S, q(S), is greater or equal to 5 we show that K^2>= 4χ(S)+(10/3)q(S)-8, thus improving the well known Severi inequality K^2>=4χ(S). We also give stronger inequalities under extra assumptions on the Albanese map or on the canonical map of S.
We shall study the chamber structure of positive cone of the albanese fiber of the moduli spaces of stable objects on an abelian surfaces via the chamber structure of stability conditions.
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type and of maximal Albanese dimension; by the Severi inequality one has $K^2_S\geq 4χ(\mathcal O_S)$. We prove that the equality $K^2_S=4χ(\mathcal O_S)$ holds if and only if $q(S):= h^1(\mathcal O_S)=2$ and the canonical model of $S$ is a double cover of the Albanese surface branched on an ample divisor with at most negligible singularities.

We give an effective upper bound of |Bir(X)| for the birational automorphism group of an irregular n-fold (with n = 3) of general type in terms of the volume V = V(X) under an ''albanese smoothness and simplicity'' condition. To be precise, |Bir(X)| < d_3 V^{10}. An optimum linear bound |Bir(X)|-1 < (1/3)(42)^3 V is obtained for those 3-folds with non-maximal albanese dimension. For all n > 2, a bound |Bir(X)| < d_n V^{10} is obtained when alb_X is generically finite, alb(X) is smooth and Alb(X) is simple.
Let X be a variety of maximal Albanese dimension. In this paper we prove that if χ(ω_X)=1 then the q(X)<=2dim X and if q(X)=2dim X, then X is birational to a product of curves of genus 2.
For any two integers $k,n$, $2\leq k\leq n$, let $f:(\mathbb{C}^*)^n\rightarrow\mathbb{C}^k$ be a generic polynomial map with given Newton polytopes. It is known that points, whose fiber under $f$ has codimension one, form a finite set $C_1(f)$ in $\mathbb{C}^k$. For maps $f$ above, we show that $C_1(f)$ is empty if $k\geq 3$, we classify all Newton polytopes contributing to $C_1(f)\neq \emptyset$ for $k=2$, and we compute $|C_1(f)|$.
We prove the equivalence between Clifford-Severi inequalities for good classes of varieties of maximal Albanese dimension and Slope Inequalities for fibrations of such varieties over curves. This provides a big set of new Slope Inequalities and characterizes the limit cases. It also gives a machinery to automatically obtain other higher dimensional Slope and Clifford-Severi inequalities from inequalities in low dimension. For this, we construct a continuous version of Xiao's method for irregular fibrations.
