In this paper, we collect basic properties of the Albanese dimension and explain how to generalize the main theorem of [F2](math.AG/0204262). This paper is a supplement and a generalization of [F2]. We also prove an inequality of irregularities for algebraic fiber spaces in the appendix, which is an exposition of Fujita-Kawamata's semi-positivity theorem.
The main purpose of this paper is to prove the Iitaka conjecture $C_{n,m}$ on the assumption that the sufficiently general fibers have maximal Albanese dimension.
The purpose of this paper is to establish a subadditivity theorem of Okounkov bodies for algebraic fiber spaces. As applications, we obtain a product formula of the restricted canonical volumes for algebraic fiber spaces and a sufficient condition for an algebraic fiber space to be birationally isotrivial in terms of Okounkov bodies when a general fiber is of general type. Furthermore, we also prove the subadditivity of the numerical Iitaka dimensions for algebraic fiber spaces, and this confirms some numerical variants of the Iitaka conjecture. We hope that our results would provide a new app…
We give a theorem of Leray-Hirsch type for Chow groups and use it to study the Hogde and Grothendieck's standard conjectures for algebraic fiber bundles of Leray-Hirsch type. Morevoer, the Hodge conjecture for product varieties will also be considered.
We assume that the existence and termination conjecture for flips holds. A complex projective manifold is said to be {\it of almost general type} if the intersection number of the canonical divisor with every very general curve is strictly positive. Let $f$ be an algebraic fiber space from $X$ to $Y$. Then the manifold $X$ is of almost general type if every very general fiber $F$ and the base space $Y$ of $f$ are of almost general type.
We can run the MMP for any divisor on any $\mathbb{Q}$-factorial projective toric variety. We show that two Mori fiber spaces, which are outputs of the above MMP, are connected by finitely many elementary transforms.
In a family of curves, the Chern numbers of a singular fiber are the local contributions to the Chern numbers of the total space. We will give some inequalities between the Chern numbers of a singular fiber as well as their lower and upper bounds. We introduce the dual fiber of a singular fiber, and prove a duality theorem. As an application, we will classify singular fibers with large or small Chern numbers.
We use pluriharmonic maps to study representations of fundamental groups of algebraic manifolds. This approach is functorial in the sense that the restriction of such a map to a fiber of a fibration remains pluriharmonic, and on this basis, we can investigate the relation between the properties of the original representation and what can be inferred by restricting it to the fibers of a fibration.
In this paper, we study the Albanese morphisms in positive characteristic. We prove that the Albanese morphism of a variety with nef anti-canonical divisor is an algebraic fiber space, under the assumption that the general fiber is $F$-pure. Furthermore, we consider a notion of $F$-splitting for morphisms, and investigate it of the Albanese morphisms. We show that an $F$-split variety has $F$-split Albanese morphism, and that the $F$-split Albanese morphism is an algebraic fiber space. As an application, we provide a new characterization of abelian varieties.
If a K3 surface is a fiber of a flat projective morphisms over a connected noetherian scheme over the complex number field, then any smooth connected fiber is also a K3 surface. Observing this, Professor Nam-Hoon Lee asked if the same is true for higher dimensional Calabi-Yau fibers. We shall give an explicit negative answer to his question as well as a proof of his initial observation.
We study algebraic fiber spaces $f:X \longrightarrow Y$ where $Y$ is of maximal Albanese dimension. In particular we give an effective version a theorem of Kawamata: If $P_m(X)=1$ for some $m \ge 2$, then the Albanese map of $X$ is surjective. Combining this with \cite{CH} it follows that $X$ is birational to an abelian variety if and only if $P_2(X)=1$ and $q(X)= \text{\rm dim} (X)$.
We present a simplified proof for a recent theorem by Junyan Cao and Mihai Paun, confirming a special case of Iitaka's conjecture: if $f \colon X\to Y$ is an algebraic fiber space, and if the Albanese mapping of $Y$ is generically finite over its image, then we have the inequality of Kodaira dimensions $κ(X)\geq κ(Y)+κ(F)$, where $F$ denotes a general fiber of $f$. We include a detailed survey of the main algebraic and analytic techniques, especially the construction of singular hermitian metrics on pushforwards of adjoint bundles (due to Berndtsson, Paun, and Takayama).
These are the lecture notes based on earlier papers with some additional new results. New and simple proofs are given for local freeness theorem and the semipositivity theorem. A decomposition theorem for higher direct images of dualizing sheaves of Kollár is extended to the sheaves of differential forms of arbitrary degrees in the case of a well prepared birational model. We will also prove the log versions of some of the results, i.e., the case where we allow horizontal boundary components.
We prove that the universal cover of a normal, projective variety X is quasi-projective if and only if a finite, étale cover of X is a fiber bundle over an Abelian variety with simply connected fiber.
We prove birational superrigidity of generic Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$, the fibers of which are Fano complete intersections of index 1 and dimension $M$ in ${\mathbb P}^{M+k}$, provided that $M\geq 2k+1$. The proof combines the traditional quadratic techniques of the method of maximal singularities with the linear techniques based on the connectedness principle of Shokurov and Koll\' ar. Certain related results are also considered.
A well-known theorem of W. Fischer and H. Grauert states that analytic fiber spaces with all fibers isomorphic to a fixed compact connected complex manifold are locally trivial. Motivated by this result, we show that if $k$ is an algebraically closed field of infinite transcendence degree over its prime field, then every smooth projective family over a reduced $k$-scheme of finite type with isomorphic fibers having reduced automorphism group schemes is locally trivial in the étale topology. We do so by reducing the problem to the case when the base is a smooth integral curve, and then, using t…
An integrable system is a dynamic system characterized by the existence of constants of motion and the existence of algebraic invariants, having an origin in algebraic geometry. In the 1970s, Mumford introduced a new completely integrable system defined on a smooth hyperelliptic curve. In the 2000s, Vanhaecke completed the description of the Munford integrable system by defining a Poisson structure on the phase space of the Mumford system. In this article we will study the singular Mumford system. The starting point is to determine when and why the Mumford system is singular. For this we will …
In this paper we study some properties of fibers of the invariant moment map for a Hamiltonian action of a reductive group on an affine symplectic varieity. We prove that all fibers have equal dimension. Further, under some additional restrictions, we show that the quotients of fibers are irreducible normal schemes. This paper is an expanded version of Section 5 and Subsection 7.2 of AG/0612559v1.
In this paper, we relate the set of asymptotic critical values of a polynomial function $f$ with the set of discontinuity of two functions, the multivalued function which associate to each value $t$ the set of tangent directions at infinity of the fiber $f^{-1}(t)$ and the composition of the $(n-2)$-dimensional volume function with the first one. This gives necessary conditions of equisingularity at infinity for the family of the fibers of a real polynomial function.
Suppose that the critical locus $Σ$ of a complex analytic function $f$ on affine space is, itself, a space with an isolated singular point at the origin $\0$, and that the Milnor number of $f$ restricted to normal slices of $Σ-\{\0\}$ is constant. Then, the general theory of perverse sheaves puts severe restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of $f$ at $\0$, and even more surprising restrictions on the cohomology of the Milnor fiber of generic hyperplane slices.
We study the algebraic Gauss-Manin system and the algebraic Brieskorn module associated to a polynomial mapping with isolated singularities. Since the algebraic Gauss-Manin system does not contain any information on the cohomology of singular fibers, we first construct a non quasi-coherent sheaf which gives the cohomology of every fiber. Then we study the algebraic Brieskorn module, and show that its position in the the algebraic Gauss-Manin system is determined by a natural map to quotients of local analytic Gauss-Manin systems, and its pole part by the vanishing cycles at infinity, comparing…
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
Let f:X->Y be an algebraic fiber space such that the general fiber has a good minimal model. We show that if f is the Iitaka fibration or if f is the Albanese map of relative dimension no more than three, then X has a good minimal model.
In this paper, we study the relative anti-canonical divisor $-K_{X/Y}$ of an algebraic fiber space $ϕ: X \to Y$, and we reveal relations among positivity conditions of $-K_{X/Y}$, certain flatness of direct image sheaves, and variants of the base loci including the stable (augmented, restricted) base loci and upper level sets of Lelong numbers. This paper contains three main results: The first result says that all the above base loci are located in the horizontal direction unless they are empty. The second result is an algebraic proof for Campana--Cao--Matsumura's equality on Hacon--$\rm{M^c}$…
Let G be a connected semisimple linear algebraic group over an algebraically closed field k of positive characteristic and let X denote an equivariant embedding of G. We define a distinguished Steinberg fiber N in G, called the zero-fiber, and prove that the closure of N within X is normal and Cohen-Macaulay. Furthermore, when X is smooth we prove that the closure of N is a local complete intersection.
Kodaira's classification of singular fibers in elliptic fibrations and its translation into the language of monodromies and Lefschetz fibrations has been a boon to the study of 4-manifolds. In this article, we begin the work of translating between singular fibers of genus 2 families of algebraic curves and the positive Dehn twist factorizations of Lefschetz fibrations for a certain subset of the singularities described by Namikawa and Ueno in the 70s. We look at four families of hypersurface singularities in $\mathbb{C}^3$. Each hypersurface comes equipped with a fibration by genus 2 algebraic…
For an algebraic variety $X$ we study the behavior of algebraic morphisms from an algebraic variety to the group $\bir(X)$ of birational maps of $X$ and obtain, as application, some insight about the relationship between the so-called Zariski topology of $\bir(X)$ and the algebraic structure of this group, where $X$ is a rational variety.
We prove a new patchworking theorem for singular algebraic curves, which states the following. Given a complex toric threefold $Y$ which fibers over ${\mathbb C}$ with a reduced reducible zero fiber $Y_0$ and other fibers $Y_t$ smooth, and given a reduced curve $C_0\subset Y_0$, the theorem provides a sufficient condition for the existence of a one-parametric family of curves $C_t\subset Y_t$, which induces an equisingular deformation for some singular points of $C_0$ and certain prescribed deformations for the other singularities. As application we give a comment on a recent theorem by G. Mik…
Let $X$ be an algebraic stack with quasi-affine diagonal of finite type over a field $k$ of characteristic $0$. We extend the well-known equivalence $\mathsf{D}^+(\mathsf{QCoh}(X)) \simeq \mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}^+(X)$ to unbounded derived categories. We also prove that if $X$ is smooth over $k$, then $\mathsf{D}_{\mathrm{qc}}(X)$ is compactly generated. We accomplish the former using the descendable algebras of Mathew. We also establish related results in positive and mixed characteristics.
Let $E$ be a fiber $F$ bundle over a base $B$ such that $E, F$ and $B$ are smooth compact complex algebraic varieties. In this paper we give explicit formulae for the difference of the Hirzebruch $χ_y$-genus $χ_y(E) - χ_y(F)χ_y(B)$. As a byproduct of the formulae we obtain that the signature of such a fiber bundle is multiplicative mod $4$, i.e. the signature difference $σ(E) -σ(F)σ(B)$ is always divisible by $4$. In the case of $\operatorname{dim}_{\mathbb C}E \leqq 4$ the $χ_y$-genus difference $χ_y(E) - χ_y(F)χ_y(B)$ can be concretely described only in terms of the signature difference $σ(E…

We show that the $b$-constant (appearing in Manin's conjecture) is constant on very general fibers of a family of algebraic varieties. If the fibers of the family are uniruled, then we show that the $b$-constant is constant on general fibers.
Let $L$ be a globally generated line bundle over a smooth irreducible complex projective surface $X$. The syzygy bundle $M_{L}$ is the kernel of the evaluation map $H^0(L)\otimes\mathcal O_X\to L$. We prove the $L$-stability of $M_L$ for Hirzebruch surfaces, del Pezzo surfaces and Enriques surfaces. The $(-K_X)$-stability of syzygy bundles $M_L$ over del Pezzo surfaces is also obtained.
Parameterized algebraic curves and surfaces are widely used in geometric modeling and their manipulation is an important task in the processing of geometric models. In particular, the determination of the intersection loci between points, pieces of parameterized algebraic curves and pieces of algebraic surfaces is a key problem in this context. In this paper, we survey recent methods based on syzygies and blowup algebras for computing the image and the finite fibers of a curve or surface parameterization, more generally of a rational map. Conceptually, the main idea is to use elimination matri…
Let $(S,D)$ be a minimal log pair of general type with $S$ a smooth projective surface and $D$ a simple normal corssing reduced divisor on $S$. We assume that its log canonial linear system $|K_S+D|$ is composed of a penciel, let $f\colon S\to B$ be the fiberation induced by the linear system $|K_S+D|$ and $F$ be a general fiber of $f$. Let $b$ (resp. $g$) be the genus of the base curve $B$ (resp. general fiber $F$) and $k=D\cdot F$ the intersection number. We show that 1. If $k>0$ and $b\geq 2$ then $2\leq g+k \leq 3$, when $g+k=3$ we have $b=2$ and $h^1(S,K_S+D)=0$. 2. Suppose $p_a(D)\leq 2(…
If there is a topologically locally constant family of smooth algebraic varieties together with an admissible normal function on the total space, then the latter is constant on any fiber if this holds on some fiber. Combined with spreading out, it implies for instance that an irreducible component of the zero locus of an admissible normal function is defined over k if it has a k-rational point where k is an algebraically closed subfield of the complex number field with finite transcendence degree. This generalizes a result of F. Charles that was shown in case the normal function is associated …
We set up a BNR correspondence for moduli spaces of Higgs bundles over a curve with a parabolic structure over any algebraically closed field. This leads to a concrete description of generic fibers of the associated strongly parabolic Hitchin map. We also show that the global nilpotent cone is equi-dimensional with half dimension of the total space. As a result, we prove the flatness and surjectivity of this map and the existence of very stable parabolic vector bundles.
Box graphs succinctly and comprehensively characterize singular fibers of elliptic fibrations in codimension two and three, as well as flop transitions connecting these, in terms of representation theoretic data. We develop a framework that provides a systematic map between a box graph and a crepant algebraic resolution of the singular elliptic fibration, thus allowing an explicit construction of the fibers from a singular Weierstrass or Tate model. The key tool is what we call a fiber face diagram, which shows the relevant information of a (partial) toric triangulation and allows the inclusio…
For G a semisimple algebraic group, we revisit the description of the components of the affne Springer fiber given by ts, with s a regular semisimple element. We then compute the fixed points of each component of a particular affne Springer fiber for Type A
In families of Painlevé VI differential equations having common algebraic solutions we classify all the members which come from geometry, i.e. the corresponding linear differential equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. In our case, we have one family with zero dimensional fibers and all others are families of curves. We use the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner in 1992 and generalize the results of Doran in 2001 and Ben Hamed and Gavrilov in 2005.
In this short note we try to generalize the Clemens-Griffiths criterion of non-rationality for smooth cubic threefolds to the case of smooth cubic fourfolds.
Given a compact complex manifold X of dimension n, we define a bimeromorphic invariant $κ_+(X)$ as the maximum p for which there is a saturated line subsheaf L of the sheaf of holomorphic p forms whose Kodaira dimension $κ(L)$ equals p. We call X special if $κ_+(X)=0$. We give some evidence that this condition characterizes X to have identically vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. We use the well-known construction of F. Campana to give, for each projective X a canonical fibration $f: X\to Y$ holomorphic outside a proper subvariety of Y and whose general fibers are special. We show that the inhe…
We contribute a new algebraic method for computing the orthogonal projections of a point onto a rational algebraic surface embedded in the three dimensional projective space. This problem is first turned into the computation of the finite fibers of a generically finite dominant rational map: a congruence of normal lines to the rational surface. Then, an in-depth study of certain syzygy modules associated to such a congruence is presented and applied to build elimination matrices that provide universal representations of its finite fibers, under some genericity assumptions. These matrices depen…
We propose an algebraic Riemann-Roch formula for moving flat bundles on contant families in characteristic zero with values in the ring of algebraic differential characters. This formula lifts Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch formula in the Chow groups and Bismut-Lott formula in the odd dimensional Betti cohomology with $\C/\Z$ coefficients over the field of complex numbers.
In this short note, we simply collect some known results about representing algebraic cycles by various kind of "nice" (e.g. smooth, local complete intersection, products of local complete intersection) algebraic cycles, up to rational equivalence. We also add a few elementary and easy observations on these representation problems that we were not able to locate in the literature.
