In families of Painlevé VI differential equations having common algebraic solutions we classify all the members which come from geometry, i.e. the corresponding linear differential equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. In our case, we have one family with zero dimensional fibers and all others are families of curves. We use the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner in 1992 and generalize the results of Doran in 2001 and Ben Hamed and Gavrilov in 2005.
We announce some results which might bring a new insight into the classification of algebraic solutions to the sixth Painleve equation. The main results consist of the rationality of parameters, trigonometric Diophantine conditions, and what the author calls the Tetrahedral Theorem regarding the absence of algebraic solutions in certain situations. The method is based on fruitful interactions between the moduli theoretical formulation of Painleve VI and dynamics on character varieties via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
Every finite branch solutions to the sixth Painleve equation around a fixed singular point is an algebraic branch solution. In particular a global solution is an algebraic solution if and only if it is finitely many-valued globally. The proof of this result relies on algebraic geometry of Painleve VI, Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, geometry and dynamics on cubic surfaces, resolutions of Kleinian singularities, and power geometry of algebraic differential equations. In the course of the proof we are also able to classify all finite branch solutions up to Backlund transformations.
We prove that if y" = f(y,y',t) is a generic Painleve equation from among the classes II to V then any collection of distinct solutions and their derivatives are algebraically independent over C(t). (Already proved by Nishioka for the single Painleve I equation). For generic Painleve VI we prove a slightly weaker statement.
We prove that if y" = f(y,y',t,α, β,..) is a generic Painleve equation (i.e. an equation in one of the families PI-PVI but with the complex parameters α, β,.. algebraically independent) then any algebraic dependence over C(t) between a set of solutions and their derivatives (y_1,..,y_n,y_1',..,y_n') is witnessed by a pair of solutions and their derivatives (y_i,y_i',y_j,y_j'). The proof combines work by the Japanese school on "irreducibility" of the Painleve equations, with the trichomoty theorem for strongly minimal sets in differentially closed fields.
We will write down the higher genus algebraic curves supporting icosahedral solutions of the sixth Painleve equation, including the largest (genus seven) curve.
We find a four-parameter family of coupled Painlevé VI systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $A_7^{(2)}$. This is the first example which gave higher-order Painlevé equations of type $A_{2l+5}^{(2)}$. We then give an explicit description of a confluence process from this system to a 3-parameter family of coupled Painlevé V and III systems in dimension four with $W(A_5^{(2)})$-symmetry. For a degenerate system of $A_5^{(2)}$ system, we also find a two-parameter family of ordinary differential systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_4^{(3)…
Differential equations with the Painlevé property have been studied extensively due to their appearance in many branches of mathematics and their applicability in physics. Although a modern, differential algebraic treatment of the order one equations appeared before, the connection with the classical theory did not. Using techniques from algebraic geometry we provide the link between the classical and the modern treatment, and with the help of differential Galois theory a new classification is derived, both for characteristic 0 and p.
We construct infinitely many non-isotrivial families of abelian varieties over given four punctured projective lines. These families lead to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation. Finally, based on a recent paper by Lin-Sheng-Wang, we prove a complete characterization for the locus of motivic Higgs bundles in the moduli space as fixed points of an ``additive'' self-map. This is a note based on the lecture given by the second named author on 04 Nov. 2022 at Tsinghua University.
In this paper we show that generic Painlevé equations from different families are orthogonal. In particular, this means that there are no general Backlund transformations between Painlevé equations from the different families $P_I-P_{VI}$ .
In this paper, we show that the family of moduli spaces of $\balpha'$-stable $(\bt, \blambda)$-parabolic $ϕ$-connections of rank 2 over $\BP^1$ with 4-regular singular points and the fixed determinant bundle of degree -1 is isomorphic to the family of Okamoto--Painlevé pairs introduced by Okamoto \cite{O1} and \cite{STT02}. We also discuss about the generalization of our theory to the case where the rank of the connections and genus of the base curve are arbitrary. Defining isomonodromic flows on the family of moduli space of stable parabolic connections via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondences…
We find a four-parameter family of coupled Painlevé VI systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $E_6^{(2)}$. This is the first example which gave higher order Painlevé type systems of type $E_{6}^{(2)}$. We study its symmetry and holomorphy conditions.
We find and study a five-parameter family of four-dimensional coupled Painlevé V systems with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_5^{(1)}$. We then give an explicit description of a confluence from those systems to a four-parameter family of four-dimensional coupled Painlevé III systems with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $B_4^{(1)}$.
I study the solutions of a particular family of Painlevé VI equations with the parameters $β=γ=0, δ=1/2$ and $2α=(2μ-1)^2$, for $2μ\in\interi$. I show that the case of half-integer $μ$ is integrable and that the solutions are of two types: the so-called Picard solutions and the so-called Chazy solutions. I give explicit formulae for them and completely determine their asymptotic behaviour near the singular points $0,1,\infty$ and their nonlinear monodromy. I study the structure of analytic continuation of the solutions to the PVI$μ$ equation for any $μ$ such that $2μ\in\interi$. As an applicat…
We show that the strongly minimal second Painlevé equation (y" = 2y^3+ty+α) is geometrically trivial, that is we show that if y_1,...,y_n are distinct solutions such that y_1,y_1',y_2,y_2',...,y_n,y_n' are algebraically dependent over C(t), then already for some i<j, y_i,y_i',y_j,y_j' are algebraically dependent over C(t). This gives an extension of some recent result for the second Painlevé equation to the non generic parameters.
We find and study a two-parameter family of coupled Painlevé II systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of several types. Moreover, we find a three-parameter family of polynomial Hamiltonian systems in two variables $t,s$. Setting $s=0$, we can obtain an autonomous version of the coupled Painlevé II systems. We also show its symmetry and holomorphy conditions.
We study the global analytic properties of the solutions of a particular family of Painleve' VI equations with the parameters $β=γ=0$, $δ={1\over2}$ and $α$ arbitrary. We introduce a class of solutions having critical behaviour of algebraic type, and completely compute the structure of the analytic continuation of these solutions in terms of an auxiliary reflection group in the three dimensional space. The analytic continuation is given in terms of an action of the braid group on the triples of generators of the reflection group. This result is used to classify all the algebraic solutions of o…
In this paper, we find a two-parameter family of coupled Painlevé systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_3^{(2)}$. We also find a four-parameter family of 2-coupled $D_3^{(2)}$-systems in dimension eight with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_5^{(2)}$. We show that for each system, we give its symmetry and holomorphy conditions, respectively. These symmetries, holomorphy conditions and invariant divisors are new.
In this paper, we study the second member of the second Painlevé hierarchy $P_{II}^{(2)}$. We show that the birational transformations take this equation to the polynomial Hamiltonian system in dimension four, and this Hamiltonian system can be considered as a 1-parameter family of coupled Painlevé systems. This Hamiltonian is new. We also show that this system admits extended affine Weyl group symmetry of type $A_1^{(1)}$, and can be recovered by its holomorphy conditions. We also study a fifth-order ordinary differential equation satisfied by this Hamiltonian. After we transform this equatio…
We find a two-parameter family of coupled Painlevé systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $A_4^{(2)}$. For a degenerate system of $A_4^{(2)}$ system, we also find a one-parameter family of coupled Painlevé systems in dimension four with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $A_1^{(1)}$. We show that for each system, we give its symmetry and holomorphy conditions. These symmetries, holomorphy conditions and invariant divisors are new. Moreover, we find a one-parameter family of partial differential systems in three variables with $W(A_1^{(1)})$-symmetry. We show the rela…
We give a reformulation of a six-parameter family of coupled Painlevé VI systems with affine Weyl group symmetry of type $D_6^{(1)}$ from the viewpoint of its symmetry and holomorphy properties.
Constructing families of abelian varieties of $\text{GL}_2$-type over $4$-punctured complex projective line via $p$-adic Hodge theory and Langlands correspondence and application to algebraic solutions of Painleve VI equation
We find and study four kinds of a 4-parameter family of four-dimensional coupled Painlevé III systems with affine Weyl group symmetry of types $B_4^{(1)}$, $D_4^{(1)}$ and $D_5^{(2)}$. We also show that these systems are equivalent by an explicit birational and symplectic transformation, respectively.
We will describe a method for constructing explicit algebraic solutions to the sixth Painleve equation, generalising that of Dubrovin-Mazzocco. There are basically two steps: First we explain how to construct finite braid group orbits of triples of elements of SL_2(C) out of triples of generators of three-dimensional complex reflection groups. (This involves the Fourier-Laplace transform for certain irregular connections.) Then we adapt a result of Jimbo to produce the Painleve VI solutions. (In particular this solves a Riemann-Hilbert problem explicitly.) Each step will be illustrated using t…
This is basically the text of a survey talk (entitled 'Painleve, Klein and the icosahedron') given at Hitchin's 60th birthday conference. It discusses the search for and construction of algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve differential equation, which may be viewed as a nonlinear analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric equation. Both algebraic and transcendental methods are used and the story involves affine Weyl groups, braid groups and cubic surfaces. Some emphasis is given to the interpretation of the sixth Painleve equation as the explicit form of the simplest nonabelian Gauss-Manin conn…
We find and study four kinds of five-parameter family of six-dimensional coupled Painlevé III systems with affine Weyl group symmetry of types $D_5^{(1)},B_5^{(1)}$ and $D_6^{(2)}$. We show that each system is equivalent by an explicit birational and symplectic transformation, respectively. We also show that we characterize each system from the viewpoint of holomorphy.
The solutions of the discrete Painlevé equation I were constructed in terms of elliptic and hyperelliptic $ψ$ functions for algebraic curves of genera one and two. For the case of genus two, there appear higher order difference equations which naturally contain the discrete Painlevé equation I as a special case.
Regarding the resolution of singularities for the differential equations of Painlevé type, there are important differences between the second-order Painlevé equations and those of higher order. Unlike the second-order case, in higher order cases there may exist some meromorphic solution spaces with codimension 2. In this paper, we will give an explicit global resolution of singularities for a 3-parameter family of third-order differential systems with meromorphic solution spaces of codimension 2.
The sixth Painlevé equation is hiding extremely rich geometric structures behind its outward appearance. This article tries to give as a total picture as possible of its dynamical natures, based on the Riemann-Hilbert approach recently developed by the authors, using various techniques from algebraic geometry. A good part of the contents is extended to Garnier systems, while this article is restricted to the original sixth Painlevé equation.
Folding transformation of the Painlevé equations is an algebraic (of degree greater than 1) transformation between solutions of different equations. In 2005 Tsuda, Okamoto and Sakai classified folding transformations of differential Painlevé equations. These transformations are in correspondence with automorphisms of affine Dynkin diagrams. We give a complete classification of folding transformations of the $q$-difference Painlevé equations, these transformations are in correspondence with certain subdiagrams of the affine Dynkin diagrams (possibly with automorphism). The method is based on Sa…

Since the classification of discrete Painlevé equations in terms of rational surfaces, there has been much interest in the range of integrable equations arising from each of the 22 surface types in Sakai's list. For all but the most degenerate type in the list, the surfaces come in families which admit affine Weyl groups of symmetries. Translation elements of this symmetry group define discrete Painlevé equations with the same number of parameters as their family of surfaces. While non-translation elements of the symmetry group have been observed to correspond to discrete systems of Painlevé-t…
A Lamé connection is a logarithmic $\mathrm{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$-connection $(E,\nabla)$ over an elliptic curve $X:\{y^2=x(x-1)(x-t)\}$, $t\not=0,1$, having a single pole at infinity. When this connection is irreducible, we show that it is invariant by the standart involution and can be pushed down as a logarithmic $\mathrm{sl}(2,\mathbb C)$-connection over $\mathbb P^1$ with poles at $0$, $1$, $t$ and $\infty$. Therefore, the isomonodromic deformation $(E_t,\nabla_t)$ of an irreducible Lamé connection, when the elliptic curve $X_t$ varry in the Legendre family, is parametrized by a solution $q(t…
We prove the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem with derivatives for the uniformizing functions of genus zero Fuchsian groups of the first kind. Our proof relies on differential Galois theory, monodromy of linear differential equations, the study of algebraic and Liouvillian solutions, differential algebraic work of Nishioka towards the Painlevé irreducibility of certain Schwarzian equations, and considerable machinery from the model theory of differentially closed fields. Our techniques allow for certain generalizations of the Ax-Lindemann-Weierstrass theorem which have interesting consequences…
Schlesinger transformations are algebraic transformations of a Fuchsian system that preserve its monodromy representation and act on the characteristic indices of the system by integral shifts. One of the important reasons to study such transformations is the relationship between Schlesinger transformations and discrete Painlevé equations; this is also the main theme behind our work. We derive \emph{discrete Schlesinger evolution equations} describing discrete dynamical systems generated by elementary Schlesinger transformations and give their discrete Hamiltonian description w.r.t.~the standa…
We formulate a geometric Riemann-Hilbert correspondence that applies to the derivation by Jimbo and Sakai of equation $q$-PVI from ``isomonodromy'' conditions. This is a step within work in progress towards the application of $q$-isomonodromy and $q$-isoStokes to $q$-Painlevé.
