We announce some results which might bring a new insight into the classification of algebraic solutions to the sixth Painleve equation. The main results consist of the rationality of parameters, trigonometric Diophantine conditions, and what the author calls the Tetrahedral Theorem regarding the absence of algebraic solutions in certain situations. The method is based on fruitful interactions between the moduli theoretical formulation of Painleve VI and dynamics on character varieties via the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence.
In families of Painlevé VI differential equations having common algebraic solutions we classify all the members which come from geometry, i.e. the corresponding linear differential equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. In our case, we have one family with zero dimensional fibers and all others are families of curves. We use the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner in 1992 and generalize the results of Doran in 2001 and Ben Hamed and Gavrilov in 2005.
Every finite branch solutions to the sixth Painleve equation around a fixed singular point is an algebraic branch solution. In particular a global solution is an algebraic solution if and only if it is finitely many-valued globally. The proof of this result relies on algebraic geometry of Painleve VI, Riemann-Hilbert correspondence, geometry and dynamics on cubic surfaces, resolutions of Kleinian singularities, and power geometry of algebraic differential equations. In the course of the proof we are also able to classify all finite branch solutions up to Backlund transformations.
We prove that if y" = f(y,y',t) is a generic Painleve equation from among the classes II to V then any collection of distinct solutions and their derivatives are algebraically independent over C(t). (Already proved by Nishioka for the single Painleve I equation). For generic Painleve VI we prove a slightly weaker statement.
We describe two algebraic solutions of the sixth Painlevé equation which are related to (isomonodromic) deformations of Picard-Fuchs equations of order two.
Various Schlesinger transformations can be combined with a direct pull-back of a hypergeometric 2x2 system to obtain $RS^2_4$-pullback transformations to isomonodromic 2x2 Fuchsian systems with 4 singularities. The corresponding Painleve VI solutions are algebraic functions, possibly in different orbits under Okamoto transformations. This paper demonstrates a direct computation of Schlesinger transformations acting on several apparent singular points, and presents an algebraic procedure (via syzygies) of computing algebraic Painleve VI solutions without deriving full RS-pullback transformation…
Algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve equation can be computed using pullback transformations of hypergeometric equations with respect to specially ramified rational coverings. In particular, as was noticed by the second author and Doran, some algebraic solutions can be constructed from a rational covering alone, without computation of the pullbacked Fuchsian equation. But the same covering can be used to pullback different hypergeometric equations, resulting in different algebraic Painleve VI solutions. This paper presents computations of explicit RS-pullback transformations, and derivati…
We prove that if y" = f(y,y',t,α, β,..) is a generic Painleve equation (i.e. an equation in one of the families PI-PVI but with the complex parameters α, β,.. algebraically independent) then any algebraic dependence over C(t) between a set of solutions and their derivatives (y_1,..,y_n,y_1',..,y_n') is witnessed by a pair of solutions and their derivatives (y_i,y_i',y_j,y_j'). The proof combines work by the Japanese school on "irreducibility" of the Painleve equations, with the trichomoty theorem for strongly minimal sets in differentially closed fields.
We will write down the higher genus algebraic curves supporting icosahedral solutions of the sixth Painleve equation, including the largest (genus seven) curve.
We describe all finite orbits of an action of the extended modular group $\barΛ$ on conjugacy classes of SL(2,C)-triples. The result is used to classify all algebraic solutions of the general Painleve VI equation up to parameter equivalence.
In 1991, one of the authors showed the existence of quadratic transformations between the Painleve' VI equations with local monodromy differences $(1/2,a,b,\pm 1/2)$ and $(a,a,b,b)$. In the present paper we give concise forms of these transformations. %, up to fractional-linear transformations. They are related to the %better known quadratic transformations obtained by Manin and Ramani-Grammaticos-Tamizhmani via Okamoto transformations. To avoid cumbersome expressions with differentiation, we use contiguous relations instead of the Okamoto transformations. The 1991 transformation is particular…
The D7 degeneration of the Painleve-III equation has solutions that are rational functions of $x^{1/3}$ for certain parameter values. We apply the isomonodromy method to obtain a Riemann-Hilbert representation of these solutions. We demonstrate the utility of this representation by analyzing rigorously the behavior of the solutions in the large parameter limit.
This paper first discusses irreducibility of a Painlevé equation $P$. We explain how the Painlevé property is helpful for the computation of special classical and algebraic solutions. As in a paper of Morales-Ruiz we associate an autonomous Hamiltonian $\mathbb{H}$ to a Painlevé equation $P$. Complete integrability of $\mathbb{H}$ is shown to imply that all solutions to $P$ are classical (which includes algebraic), so in particular $P$ is solvable by ''quadratures''. Next, we show that the variational equation of $P$ at a given algebraic solution coincides with the normal variational equation …
We study the global analytic properties of the solutions of a particular family of Painleve' VI equations with the parameters $β=γ=0$, $δ={1\over2}$ and $α$ arbitrary. We introduce a class of solutions having critical behaviour of algebraic type, and completely compute the structure of the analytic continuation of these solutions in terms of an auxiliary reflection group in the three dimensional space. The analytic continuation is given in terms of an action of the braid group on the triples of generators of the reflection group. This result is used to classify all the algebraic solutions of o…
We exhibit a remarkable connection between sixth equation of Painleve list and infinite families of explicitly uniformizable algebraic curves. Fuchsian equations, congruences for group transformations, differential calculus of functions and differentials on corresponding Riemann surfaces, Abelian integrals, analytic connections (generalizations of Chazy's equations), and other attributes of uniformization can be obtained for these curves. As byproducts of the theory, we establish relations between Picard-Hitchin's curves, hyperelliptic curves, punctured tori, Heun's equations, and the famous d…
We will explain how some new algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve equation arise from complex reflection groups, thereby extending some results of Hitchin and Dubrovin-Mazzocco for real reflection groups. The problem of finding explicit formulae for these solutions will be addressed elsewhere.
The existence, uniqueness and convergence of formal Puiseux series solutions of non-autonomous algebraic differential equations of first order at a nonsingular point of the equation is studied, including the case where the celebrated Painleve theorem cannot be applied explicitly for the study of convergence. Several examples illustrating relationships to the Painleve theorem and lesser-known Petrovic's results are provided.
This is basically the text of a survey talk (entitled 'Painleve, Klein and the icosahedron') given at Hitchin's 60th birthday conference. It discusses the search for and construction of algebraic solutions of the sixth Painleve differential equation, which may be viewed as a nonlinear analogue of the Gauss hypergeometric equation. Both algebraic and transcendental methods are used and the story involves affine Weyl groups, braid groups and cubic surfaces. Some emphasis is given to the interpretation of the sixth Painleve equation as the explicit form of the simplest nonabelian Gauss-Manin conn…
The 0-instanton solution of Painlevé I is a sequence $(u_{n,0})$ of complex numbers which appears universally in many enumerative problems in algebraic geometry, graph theory, matrix models and 2-dimensional quantum gravity. The asymptotics of the 0-instanton $(u_{n,0})$ for large $n$ were obtained by the third author using the Riemann-Hilbert approach. For $k=0,1,2,...$, the $k$-instanton solution of Painlevé I is a doubly-indexed sequence $(u_{n,k})$ of complex numbers that satisfies an explicit quadratic non-linear recursion relation. The goal of the paper is three-fold: (a) to compute the …
