If a K3 surface is a fiber of a flat projective morphisms over a connected noetherian scheme over the complex number field, then any smooth connected fiber is also a K3 surface. Observing this, Professor Nam-Hoon Lee asked if the same is true for higher dimensional Calabi-Yau fibers. We shall give an explicit negative answer to his question as well as a proof of his initial observation.
Let $(X,L)$ be a quasi-polarized canonical Calabi-Yau threefold. In this note, we show that $\vert mL\vert$ is basepoint free for $m\geq 4$. Moreover, if the morphism $Φ_{\vert 4L\vert}$ is not birational onto its image and $h^0(X,L)\geq 2$, then $L^3=1$. As an application, if $Y$ is a $n$-dimensional Fano manifold such that $-K_Y=(n-3)H$ for some ample divisor $H$, then $\vert mH\vert$ is basepoint free for $m\geq 4$ and if the morphism $Φ_{\vert 4H\vert}$ is not birational onto its image, then $Y$ is either a weighted hypersurface of degree $10$ in the weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}(1…
A mathematical theory of D-string world-sheet instantons, II: Moduli stack of $Z$-(semi)stable morphisms from Azumaya nodal curves with a fundamental module to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold
We explain a correct proof of the decomposition theorem for direct images of constant Hodge modules by proper Kähler morphisms of complex manifolds. We also give some examples showing certain difficulty in the non-constant Hodge module case.
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
In this paper we study boundedness properties and singularities of log Calabi-Yau fibrations, particularly those admitting Fano type structures. A log Calabi-Yau fibration roughly consists of a pair $(X,B)$ with good singularities and a projective morphism $X\to Z$ such that $K_X+B$ is numerically trivial over $Z$. This class includes many central ingredients of birational geometry such as Calabi-Yau and Fano varieties and also fibre spaces of such varieties, flipping and divisorial contractions, crepant models, germs of singularities, etc.
In this article, we investigate deformations of a Calabi-Yau manifold $Z$ in a toric variety $F$, possibly not smooth. In particular, we prove that the forgetful morphism from the Hilbert functor $H^F_Z$ of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ in $F$ to the functor of infinitesimal deformations of $Z$ is smooth. This implies the smoothness of $H^F_Z $ at the corresponding point in the Hilbert scheme. Moreover, we give some examples and include some computations on the Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds in Fano toric varieties.

We prove some results on effective very ampleness and projective normality for some varieties with trivial canonical bundle. In the first part we prove an effective projective normality result for an ample line bundle on regular smooth four-folds with trivial canonical bundle. More precisely we show that for a regular smooth fourfold with trivial canonical bundle, $A^{\otimes 15}$ is projectively normal for $A$ ample. In the second part we emphasize on the projective normality of multiples of ample and globally generated line bundles on certain classes of known examples (upto deformation) of p…
For a one parameter family of Calabi-Yau threefolds, Green, Griffiths and Kerr have expressed the total singularities in terms of the degrees of Hodge bundles and Euler number of the general fiber. In this paper, we show that the total singularities can be expressed by the sum of asymptotic values of BCOV invariants, studied by Fang, Lu and Yoshikawa. On the other hand, by using Yau's Schwarz lemma, we prove Arakelov type inequalities and Euler number bound for Calabi-Yau family over a compact Riemann surface.
D-branes of A-type, their deformations, and Morse cobordism of A-branes on Calabi-Yau 3-folds under a split attractor flow: Donaldson/Alexander-Hilden-Lozano-Montesinos-Thurston/Hurwitz/Denef-Joyce meeting Polchinski-Grothendieck
Kawamata proposed a conjecture predicting that every nef and big line bundle on a smooth projective variety with trivial first Chern class has nontrivial global sections. We verify this conjecture for several cases, including (i) all hyperkähler varieties of dimension $\leq 6$; (ii) all known hyperkähler varieties except for O'Grady's 10-dimensional example; (iii) general complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties in certain Fano manifolds (e.g. toric ones). Moreover, we investigate the effectivity of Todd classes of hyperkähler varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties. We prove that the fourth Todd…
A mathematical theory of D-string world-sheet instantons, I: Compactness of the stack of $Z$-semistable Fourier-Mukai transforms from a compact family of nodal curves to a projective Calabi-Yau 3-fold
The 2-dimensional Lyness map is a 5-periodic birational map of the plane which may famously be resolved to give an automorphism of a log Calabi-Yau surface, given by the complement of an anticanonical pentagon of $(-1)$-curves in a del Pezzo surface of degree 5. This surface has many remarkable properties and, in particular, it is mirror to itself. We construct the 3-dimensional big brother of this surface by considering the 3-dimensional Lyness map, which is an 8-periodic birational map. The variety we obtain is a special (non-$\mathbb Q$-factorial) affine Fano 3-fold of type $V_{12}$, and we…
In this article we investigate diffeomorphism classes of Calabi-Yau threefolds. In particular, we focus on those embedded in toric Fano manifolds. Along the way, we give various examples and conclude with a curious remark regarding mirror symmetry.
In their study of genus-one string amplitude, Bershadsky-Cecotti-Ooguri-Vafa discovered a remarkable identification between holomorphic Ray-Singer torsion and instanton numbers for Calabi-Yau threefolds. The holomorphic torsion invariant for Calabi-Yau threefolds corresponding to the genus-one string amplitude is called BCOV invariant. In this paper, we establish an identification between the BCOV invariants of Borcea-Voisin threefolds and another holomorphic torsion invariants for K3 surfaces with involution. We also introduce BCOV invariants for abelian Calabi-Yau orbifolds. Between Borcea-V…
I show that on any smooth, projective ordinary curve of genus at least two and a projective embedding, there is a natural example of a stable Ulrich bundle for this embedding: namely the sheaf $B^1_X$ of locally exact differentials twisted by $Ø_X(1)$ given by this embedding and in particular there exist ordinary varieties of any dimension which carry Ulrich bundles. In higher dimensions, assuming $X$ is Frobenius split variety I show that $B^1_X$ is an ACM bundle and if $X$ is also a Calabi-Yau variety and $p>2$ then $B^1_X$ is not a direct sum of line bundles. In particular I show that $B^1_…
We study various examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds over finite fields. In particular, we provide a counterexample to a conjecture of K. Joshi on lifting Calabi-Yau threefolds to characteristic zero. We also compute the p-adic cohomologies of some Calabi-Yau threefolds constructed by Cynk-van Straten which have remarkable arithmetic properties, as well as those of the Hirokado threefold. These examples and computations answer some outstanding questions of B. Bhatt, T. Ekedahl, van der Geer-Katsura and Patakfalvi-Zdanowicz, and shed new light on the Beauville-Bogomolov decomposition in positive …
In this paper, we provide new examples of Levi-Civita Ricci-flat Hermitian metrics on certain compact non-Kähler Calabi-Yau manifolds, including every compact Hermitian Weyl-Einstein manifold, every compact locally conformal hyperKähler manifold, certain suspensions of Brieskorn manifolds, and every generalized Hopf manifold provided by suspensions of exotic spheres. These examples generalize previous constructions on Hopf manifolds. Additionally, we also construct new examples of compact Hermitian manifolds with nonnegative first Chern class that admit constant strictly negative Riemannian sc…
