Let M be a field of finite type over {\bf Q} and X a variety defined over M. We study when the set {P \in X(K) \mid f^{\circ n} (P) = P for some n \geq 1} is finite for any finite extension fields K of M and for any dominant K-morphisms f : X \to X with deg f \geq 2.
We investigate a relationship between nondegeneracy of a simple abelian variety $A$ over an algebraic closure of $\mb{Q}$ and of its reduction $A_0$. We prove that under some assumptions, nondegeneracy of $A$ implies nondegeneracy of $A_0$.
We discuss several conjectures about derived equivalent varieties, defined over fields of arbitrary characteristics, and implications among them. In particular we show that the (conjectural) derived invariance of the Hasse-Weil Zeta functions of smooth projective varieties over finite fields, implies the derived invariance of the Hodge diamond of complex algebraic varieties.
The Tate conjecture for divisors on varieties over number fields is equivalent to finiteness of $\ell$-primary torsion in the Brauer group. We show that this finiteness is actually uniform in one-dimensional families for varieties that satisfy the Tate conjecture for divisors -- e.g. abelian varieties and $K3$ surfaces.
We prove that if f is a self-map of an algebraic variety over a field K, then under certain conditions on X, f and K the set of possible periods of K-valued periodic points of f is finite.
We prove an elementary but somewhat unexpected result about projective embeddings of smooth varieties X whose cotangent bundles are numerically effective. Specifically, we show that the degree of X in any projective embedding must grow (almost) exponentially in the dimension of X.
We study for rationally connected varieties $X$ the group of degree 2 integral homology classes on $X$ modulo those which are algebraic. We show that the Tate conjecture for divisor classes on surfaces defined over finite fields implies that this group is trivial for any rationally connected variety.
We consider projective varieties with degenerate Gauss image whose focal hypersurfaces are non-reduced schemes. Examples of this situation are provided by the secant varieties of Severi and Scorza varieties. The Severi varieties are moreover characterized by a uniqueness property.
It is shown that for a perverse sheaf $K$ on an abelian variety $X$ the integers $i$ for which the cohomology $H^i(X,K)$ does not vanish define an interval in the number line (under certain conditions on the field of definition of $K$)
In this paper we study the connection between rigid sheaves and separable-exceptional objects on Fano varieties over arbitrary fields. We give criteria for a rigid vector bundle on a Fano variety to be the direct sum of separable-exceptional bundles and for a separable-exceptional vector bundle to be part of a full separable-exceptional collection.
In this short note, we show that a construction by Ottem provides an example of a rationally connected variety that is not birationally equivalent to a Mori dream space. This answers in the negative (at least in the category of terminal varieties) a question posed by Krylov.
This paper proposes a conjectural picture for the structure of the Chow ring of a (projective) hyper-Kähler variety, and the construction of a Beauville decomposition, with emphasis on the Chow group of $0$-cycles, which is endowed with a natural filtration of Brill-Noether type. Some of the conjectures are proved in the case of Hilbert schemes of K3 surfaces and Fano varieties of lines of cubic fourfolds.
We study the Lefschetz standard conjecture on a smooth complex projective variety X. In degree 2, we reduce it to a local statement concerning deformations of vector bundles on X. When X is hyperkähler, we show that the existence of nontrivial deformations of stable hyperholomorphic bundles implies the Lefschetz standard conjecture in codimension 2.
In this paper we define an action of the Weyl group on the quiver varieties $M_{m,\grl}(d,v)$ with generic $(m,\grl)$. To do it we describe a set of generators of the projective ring of a quiver variety. We also prove connectness for the smooth quiver variety $M(d,v)$ and normality for $M_0(d,v)$ in the case of a quiver of finite type and $d-v$ a regular weight.
Let $R$ be the ring of $S$-integers in a number field $K$. Let $\mathcal{B}=\{β, β^{\ast}\}$ be the multi-set of roots of a nonzero quadratic polynomial over $R$. There are varieties $V(\mathcal{B})_{N,k}$ defined over $R$ parametrizing periodic continued fractions $[b_1,\ldots , b_N,\overline{a_1,\ldots ,a_k}]$ for $β$ or $β^{\ast}$. We study the $R$-points on these varieties, finding contrasting behavior according to whether groups of units are infinite or not. If $R$ is the rational integers or the ring of integers in an imaginary quadratic field, we prove that the $R$-points of $V(\mathcal…
We prove a conjecture of Khovanov which identifies the topological space underlying the Springer variety of complete flags in C^2n stabilized by a fixed nilpotent operator with two Jordan blocks of size n.
In this short note, we will gives several remarks on rational points of varieties whose cotangent bundles are generated by global sections. For example, we will show that if the sheaf of differentials of a projective variety X over a number field k is ample and generated by global sections, then the set of k-rational points of X is finite.
In this paper, we firstly point out, by a counter example, that Proposition 6.4 of Section 6 in Bump's book (Algebraic Geometry) is error, and then give a correct statement with proof. We finally point out a gap in the proof of Theorem 3, in Chapter I Section 8, of Mumford's red book, and indicate a way to complete it.
We prove an existence theorem for jet differentials on complete intersection varieties that generalizes a theorem of S. Diverio. We also show that one can readily deduce hyperbolicity for generic complete intersections of high multidegree from earlier work of Diverio-Merker-Rousseau and Diverio-Trapani. And finally we prove the numerical aspect of a conjecture of O. Debarre.
In this note, using methods introduced by Hacon, McKernan and Xu, we study the accumulation points of volumes of varieties of log general type. First, we show that, if the set of boundary coefficients $Λ$ is DCC, closed under limits and contains 1, then also the corresponding set of volumes is DCC and closed under limits. Then, we consider the case of $ε$-log canonical varieties, for $0 < ε< 1$. In this situation, we prove that, if $Λ$ is finite, then the corresponding set of volumes is discrete.
For periodic graph operators, we establish criteria to determine the overlaps of spectral band functions based on Bloch varieties. One criterion states that for a large family of periodic graph operators, the irreducibility of Bloch varieties implies no non-trivial periods for spectral band functions. This particularly shows that spectral band functions of discrete periodic Schrödinger operators on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ have no non-trivial periods, answering a question asked by Mckenzie and Sabri [Quantum ergodicity for periodic graphs. arXiv preprint arXiv:2208.12685 (2022)].
We discuss various results and questions around the Grothendieck period conjecture, which is a counterpart, concerning the de Rham-Betti realization of algebraic varieties over number fields, of the classical conjectures of Hodge and Tate. These results give new evidence towards the conjectures of Grothendieck and Kontsevich-Zagier concerning transcendence properties of the torsors of periods of varieties over number fields. We notably establish that the Grothendieck period conjecture holds in degree 1 for products of curves, of abelian varieties, and of K3 surfaces, and that it holds in degre…
Kawamata proposed a conjecture predicting that every nef and big line bundle on a smooth projective variety with trivial first Chern class has nontrivial global sections. We verify this conjecture for several cases, including (i) all hyperkähler varieties of dimension $\leq 6$; (ii) all known hyperkähler varieties except for O'Grady's 10-dimensional example; (iii) general complete intersection Calabi-Yau varieties in certain Fano manifolds (e.g. toric ones). Moreover, we investigate the effectivity of Todd classes of hyperkähler varieties and Calabi-Yau varieties. We prove that the fourth Todd…
It is known that the variety of pairs of n x n commuting upper triangular matrices isn't a complete intersection for infinitely many values of n; we show that there exists m such that this happens if and only if n > m. We also show that m < 18 and that it could be found by determining the dimension of the variety of pairs of commuting strictly upper triangular matrices. Then we define a natural map from the variety of pairs of commuting n x n matrices onto a subvariety defined by linear equations of the grassmannian of subspaces of codimension 2 of a vector space of dimension n x n.
We prove the following result of Bondal's: that there is a fully faithful embedding $κ$ of the perfect derived category of a proper toric variety into the derived category of constructible sheaves on a compact torus. We compare this result to a torus-equivariant version considered in joint work with Fang, Liu, and Zaslow. There we showed that in the torus-equivariant version the image of the embedding is cut out by microlocal conditions. To establish a similar characterization of the image of $κ$ is an open problem.
We demonstrate that a conjecture of Teh which relates the niveau filtration on Borel-Moore homology of real varieties and the images of generalized cycle maps from reduced Lawson homology is false. We show that the niveau filtration on reduced Lawson homology is trivial and construct an explicit class of examples for which Teh's conjecture fails by generalizing a result of Schulting. We compare various cycle maps and in particular we show that the Borel-Haeflinger cycle map naturally factors through the reduced Lawson homology cycle map.
We prove some results on effective very ampleness and projective normality for some varieties with trivial canonical bundle. In the first part we prove an effective projective normality result for an ample line bundle on regular smooth four-folds with trivial canonical bundle. More precisely we show that for a regular smooth fourfold with trivial canonical bundle, $A^{\otimes 15}$ is projectively normal for $A$ ample. In the second part we emphasize on the projective normality of multiples of ample and globally generated line bundles on certain classes of known examples (upto deformation) of p…
Let us say that a curve $C\subset\mathbb P^3$ is osculating self-dual if it is projectively equivalent to the curve in the dual space $(\mathbb P^3)^*$ whose points are osculating planes to~$C$. Similarly, we say that a $k$-dimensional subvariety $X\subset\mathbb P^{2k+1}$ is osculating self-dual if its second osculating space at the general point is a hyperplane and $X$ is projectively equivalent to the variety in $(\mathbb P^{2k+1})^*$ whose points are second osculating spaces to $X$. In this note we show that for each $k\ge 1$ there exist many osculating self-dual $k$-dimensional subvarieti…
We study the cones of q-ample divisors on smooth complex varieties. In favourable cases, we identify a part where the closure of this cone and the nef cone have the same boundary. This is especially interesting for Fano (or almost Fano) varieties.
The purpose of this note is to give a refinement of the product formula proved in [1] for the Poincare polynomial of a smooth Schubert variety in the flag variety of an algebraic group G over C. This yields a factorization of the number of elements in a Bruhat interval [e,w] in the Weyl group W of G provided the Schubert variety associated to w is smooth. This gives an elementary necessary condition for a Schubert variety in the flag variety to be smooth.
This short paper is a continuation of the author's Ph.D thesis, where Ekedahl-Oort strata are defined and studied for Shimura varieties of Hodge type. The main results here are as follows. 1. The Ekedahl-Oort stratification is independent of the choices of symplectic embeddings. 2. Under certain reasonable assumptions, there is certain functoriality for Ekedahl-Oort stratifications with respect to morphisms of Shimura varieties.
Let $X$ be an algebraic variety over a finite field $\bF_q$, homogeneous under a linear algebraic group. We show that the number of rational points of $X$ over $\bF_{q^n}$ is a periodic polynomial function of $q^n$ with integer coefficients. Moreover, the shifted periodic polynomial function, where $q^n$ is formally replaced with $q^n + 1$, is shown to have non-negative coefficients.
Let $X$ be a projective variety of dimension $n\ge1$ over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. We prove a Fujiki-Lieberman type theorem on the structure of the automorphism group of $X$. Let $G$ be a group of zero entropy automorphisms of $X$ and $G_0$ the set of elements in $G$ which are isotopic to the identity. We show that after replacing $G$ by a suitable finite-index subgroup, $G/G_0$ is a unipotent group of the derived length at most $n-1$. This result was first proved by Dinh, Oguiso and Zhang for compact Kähler manifolds.
Suppose $X$ is a projective variety defined over a finite extension $K$ of $\mathbb{Q}_p$ and suppose $X$ admits a model $\mathcal{X}$ defined over the ring of integers $R$ of $K$. Let $f:{X}\rightarrow {X}$ be an endomorphism of $X$ defined over $K$ that can be extended to an endomorphism of $\mathcal{X}$ defined over $R$. We apply a method of Fakhruddin to prove an explicit upper bound for the primitive period of periodic points defined over $R$.
We prove a dynamical version of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for subvarieties of quasiprojective varieties X, endowed with the action of a morphism f:X --> X. We use an analytic method based on the technique of Skolem, Mahler, and Lech, along with results of Herman and Yoccoz from nonarchimedean dynamics.
In this paper, we study the growth of the number of fixed points from iterating an endomorphism of an abelian variety. Using the estimates obtained on an abelian variety, we are able to extend the results to endomorphisms on varieties of Kodaira dimension zero and more generally their periodic subvarieties.
This note records that in the setting of complex varieties, the cohomological consequence of Ehresmann's fibration theorem holds without the smooth assumption on the base or the total space.
We study over a number field, the iterates of automorphisms of the affine space. More precisely, we are interested in the periodic and non-periodic points; for the former the questions are similar to the ones about torsion points on abelian varieties, for the latter the questions are similar to the problems on counting rational points on varieties. In order to study this problem, we define geometric invariants, which are defined thanks to the cone of divisors associated to some varieties constructed from the automorphisms. We study, in all dimension, these invariants and bound them above for o…
In this short note, we will show the following weak evidence of S. Lang conjecture over function fields. Let f : X ---> Y be a projective and surjective morphism of algebraic varieties over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic zero, whose generic fiber is geometrically irreducible and of general type. If f is not birationally trivial, then there are countably many proper closed varieties { Z_i } of X such that every quasi-section of f is contained in the union of Z_i.
We propose two conjectures of Hard Lefschetz type on Chow groups and prove them for some special cases. For abelian varieties, we shall show they are equivalent to well-known conjectures of Beauville and Murre.
We study some conjectures about Chow groups of varieties of geometric genus one. Some examples are given of Calabi-Yau threefolds where these conjectures can be verified, using the theory of finite-dimensional motives.
We introduce a cohomology theory for a class of projective varieties over a finite field coming from the canonical trace on a C*-algebra attached to the variety. Using the cohomology, we prove the rationality, functional equation and the Betti numbers conjectures for the zeta function of the variety.
I show that on any smooth, projective ordinary curve of genus at least two and a projective embedding, there is a natural example of a stable Ulrich bundle for this embedding: namely the sheaf $B^1_X$ of locally exact differentials twisted by $Ø_X(1)$ given by this embedding and in particular there exist ordinary varieties of any dimension which carry Ulrich bundles. In higher dimensions, assuming $X$ is Frobenius split variety I show that $B^1_X$ is an ACM bundle and if $X$ is also a Calabi-Yau variety and $p>2$ then $B^1_X$ is not a direct sum of line bundles. In particular I show that $B^1_…
We associate to an analytic subvariety of a torus a tropical variety. In the first part, we generalize the results from tropical algebraic geometry to this non-archimedean analytic situation. The periodic case is applied to a totally degenerate abelian variety A. We obtain a dimensionality bound for the range of an algebraic morphism from a smooth variety Y to A in terms of the singularities of a strictly semistable model of Y. The main result is that Chambert-Loir's canonical measures on a closed subvariety of A induce piecewise Haar measures on the associated tropical variety and we give an …
We approach non-divisorial base loci of big and nef line bundles on irreducible symplectic varieties. While for K3 surfaces, only divisorial base loci can occur, nothing was known about the behaviour of non-divisorial base loci for more general irreducible symplectic varieties. We determine the base loci of all big and nef line bundles on the Hilbert scheme of two points on very general K3 surfaces of genus two and on their birational models. Remarkably, we find an ample line bundle with a non-trivial base locus in codimension two. We deduce that, generically in the moduli spaces of polarized …
We give a class of examples of vector bundles on a relative smooth projective curve over Spec Z such that for infinitely many prime reductions the bundle has a Frobenius descent, but the restriction to the generic fiber in characteristic zero is not semistable. In the third section of the paper we prove for a large class of varieties (including abelian varieties) that any vector bundle with this Frobenius descent property is generically semistable.
In this paper, we investigate, for varieties over $\mathbb C$ with trivial group of $0$-cycles, the gap between essential $\mathrm{CH}_0$-dimension $2$ and essential $\mathrm{CH}_0$-dimension $0$. In particular, we present sufficient (and necessary) conditions for a variety with trivial group of $0$-cycles and essential $\mathrm{CH}_0$-dimension $\leq 2$ to have, in fact, essential $\mathrm{CH}_0$-dimension $0$.
