Let f be a generically finite morphism from X to Y. The purpose of this paper is to show how the O_Y algebra structure on the push forward of O_X controls algebro-geometric aspects of X like the ring generation of graded rings associated to X and the very ampleness of line bundles on X. As the main application of this we prove some new results for certain regular surfaces X of general type. Precisely, we find the degrees of the generators of the canonical ring of X when the canonical morphism of X is a finite cover of a surface of minimal degree. These results complement results of Ciliberto [Ci] and Green [G]. The techniques of this paper also yield different proofs of some earlier results, such as Noether's theorem for certain kinds of curves and some results on Calabi-Yau threefolds that had appeared in [GP2].
We discuss the relationship among various conjectures in the minimal model theory including the finite generation conjecture of the log canonical rings and the abundance conjecture. In particular, we show that the finite generation conjecture of the log canonical rings for log canonical pairs can be reduced to that of the log canonical rings for purely log terminal pairs of log general type.
Extending the description of canonical rings from \cite{reid78} we show that every Gorenstein stable Godeaux surface with torsion of order at least $3$ is smoothable.
Generalizing the classical theorems of Max Noether and Petri, we describe generators and relations for the canonical ring of a stacky curve, including an explicit Gröbner basis. We work in a general algebro-geometric context and treat log canonical and spin canonical rings as well. As an application, we give an explicit presentation for graded rings of modular forms arising from finite-area quotients of the upper half-plane by Fuchsian groups.
In this paper we propose an approach to investigate the canonical rings of surfaces of general type whose canonical system has isolated base points and yields a birational map onto its image. We apply then the method in the concrete case of surfaces with $K^2=7$ and $p_g=4$, where we give three different descriptions of the canonical ring (under the presence of base points). The main result in the paper consists in showing an explicit deformation of the above canonical rings to the canonical rings of surfaces whose canonical system has no base points (the latter were already classified by the …
We study the anti-canonical ring of a projective variety and we characterise varieties of log Fano type depending on the singularities of these models.
We show the derived invariance of various geometric invariants of smooth complex projective varieties governed by the Albanese map, including the relative canonical ring and the class of the relative canonical model in a suitable variant of the Grothendieck ring of varieties. Then we derive some applications to the derived invariance of Hodge numbers.
We prove that the log canonical ring of a klt pair of dimension $3$ with $\mathbb{Q}$-boundary over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>5$ is finitely generated. In the process we prove log abundance for such pairs in the case $κ=2$.
Few explicit families of 3-folds are known for which the computation of the canonical ring is accessible and the birational geometry non-trivial. In this note we investigate a family of determinantal 3-folds in $\mathbb P^2 \times \mathbb P^3$ where this is the case.
The purpose of this note is to review an algebraic proof of the finite generation theorem due to Birkar-Cascini-Hacon-McKernan whose method is based on the Minimal Model Program. A survey article for Current Development in Mathematics 2007.
In this paper, we prove the weak positivity theorem in positive characteristic when the canonical ring of the geometric generic fiber $F$ is finitely generated and the Frobenius stable canonical ring of $F$ is large enough. As its application, we show the subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions in some new cases.
Let C be a curve (possibly non reduced or reducible) lying on a smooth algebraic surface. We show that the canonical ring R(C, ω_C) is generated in degree 1 if C is numerically 4-connected, not hyperelliptic and even (i.e. with K_C of even degree on every component). As a corollary we show that on a smooth algebraic surface of general type with p_g(S)>0 and q(S)=0 the canonical ring R(S, K_S) is generated in degree \leq 3 if there exists a curve C in |K_S| numerically 3-connected and not hyperelliptic.
In this paper, we study an algebraic fiber space in positive characteristic whose generic fiber $F$ has finitely generated canonical ring and sufficiently large Frobenius stable canonical ring. An example of such a case is when $F$ is $F$-pure and its dualizing sheaf is invertible and ample. We treat a Fujita-type conjecture due to Popa and Schnell concerning direct images of pluricanonical bundles, and prove it under some additional hypotheses. As an application, we show the subadditivity of Kodaira dimensions in some new cases.
Let C be a projective curve either reduced with planar singularities or contained in a smooth algebraic surface. We show that the canonical ring R(C, ω_C)= \oplus_{k \geq 0} H^0(C, ω_C^k is generated in degree 1 if C is 3-connected and not (honestly) hyperelliptic; we show moreover that R(C, L)=\oplus_{k \geq 0} H^0(C,L^k)$ is generated in degree 1 if C is reduced with planar singularities and L is an invertible sheaf such that deg L_{|B} \geq 2p_a(B)+1 for every B \subseteq C.
We treat two different topics on the log minimal model program, especially for four-dimensional log canonical pairs. (a) Finite generation of the log canonical ring in dimension four. (b) Abundance theorem for irregular fourfolds. We obtain (a) as a direct consequence of the existence of four-dimensional log minimal models by using Fukuda's theorem on the four-dimensional log abundance conjecture. We can prove (b) only by using traditional arguments. More precisely, we prove the abundance conjecture for irregular $(n+1)$-folds on the assumption that the minimal model conjecture and the abundan…
The theory of the Oukounkov body is a useful tool for studying the asymptotic behaviour of the canonical ring of a line bundle over a projective manifold. In this note, combined with the algebraic reduction, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the canonical ring of a line bundle over an arbitrary compact normal irreducible complex space.
This set of notes provides some additional explanatory material on the analytic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring for a compact complex algebraic manifold of general type.
In the first part of the paper Beilinson's theorem on the bounded derived category of coherent sheaves on P^n is extended to weighted projective spaces in a rather explicit form. To this purpose the usual category of coherent sheaves is replaced by a suitable category of graded sheaves, and a more general theory of graded schemes is developed. In the second part of the paper the weighted version of Beilinson's theorem is applied to prove a structure theorem for certain canonical projections of surfaces of general type into a 3-dimensional weighted projective space. This result (which generaliz…
In this paper we consider the problem of finding explicitly canonical ideals of one-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. We show that Gorenstein ideals contained in a high power of the maximal ideal are canonical ideals. In the codimension two case, from a Hilbert-Burch resolution, we show how to construct canonical ideals of curve singularities. Finally, we translate the problem of the analytic classification of curve singularities to the classification of local Artin Gorenstein rings with suitable length.
If A is a strongly noetherian graded algebra generated in degree one, then there is a canonically constructed graded ring homomorphism from A to a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring B(X, L, sigma), which is surjective in large degree. This result is a key step in the study of projectively simple rings. The proof relies on some results concerning the growth of graded rings which are of independent interest.
We construct three sequences of regular surfaces of general type with unbounded numerical invariants whose canonical map is 2-to-1 onto a canonically embedded surface. Only sporadic examples of surfaces with these properties were previously known.
In this note, we construct three new infinite families of surfaces of general type with canonical map of degree 2 onto a surface of general type. For one of these families the canonical system has base points.
We construct a surface of general type with canonical map of degree 12 which factors as a triple cover and a bidouble cover of $\mathbb P^2$. We also show the existence of a smooth surface with $q=0,$ $χ=13$ and $K^2=9χ$ such that its canonical map is either of degree 3 onto a surface of general type or of degree 9 onto a rational surface.
For a projective curve $C$ and the canonical divisor $K_C$ on $C$, it is classically known that the canonical ring $R(C) = \oplus_{m=0}^\infty H^0(C, m K_C)$ is finitely generated in degree at most three. In this article, we study whether analogous statements hold for finite graphs and tropical curves. For any finite graph $G$, we show that the canonical semi-ring $R(G)$ is finitely generated but that the degree of generators are not bounded by a universal constant. For any hyperelliptic tropical curve $Γ$ with integer edge-length, we show that the canonical semi-ring $R(Γ)$ is not finitely ge…
After recalling briefly the main properties of the amalgamated duplication of a ring $R$ along an ideal $I$, denoted by $R\JoinI$, we restrict our attention to the study of the properties of $R\JoinI$, when $I$ is a multiplicative canonical ideal of $R$ \cite{hhp}. In particular, we study when every regular fractional ideal of $R\Join I$ is divisorial.
In this paper, we classified the surfaces whose canonical maps are abelian covers over $\mathbb{P}^2$. Moveover, we construct a new Campedelli surface with fundamental group $\mathbb{Z}_2^{\oplus 3}$ and give defining equations for Perssson's surface and Tan's surfaces with odd canonical degrees explicitly.
Smooth surfaces have finitely generated canonical rings and projective canonical models. For normal surfaces, however, the graded ring of multicanonical sections is possibly nonnoetherian, such that the corresponding homogeneous spectrum is noncompact. I construct a canonical compactification by adding finitely many non-Q-Gorenstein points at infinity, provided that each Weil divisor is numerically equivalent to a Q-Cartier divisor. Similar results hold for arbitrary Weil divisors instead of the canonical class.
We shall describe the divisor class group and the graded canonical module of the multi-section ring for a normal projective variety X and Weil divisors D_1,..., D_s on X under a mild condition. In the proof, we use the theory of Krull domain and the equivariant twisted inverse functor due to Hashimoto.
Consider modular forms arising from a finite-area quotient of the upper-half plane by a Fuchsian group. By the classical results of Kodaira-Spencer, this ring of modular forms may be viewed as the log spin canonical ring of a stacky curve. In this paper, we tightly bound the degrees of minimal generators and relations of log spin canonical rings. As a consequence, we obtain a tight bound on the degrees of minimal generators and relations for rings of modular forms of arbitrary integral weight.
It is shown that the canonical ring of a minimal surface of general type with $p_g=0, K^2\geq 2$ is generated by its elements of degree lesser or equal to 5, provided $|2K|$ has no fixed components, and that this bound can be lowered to 4 under the assumption that $|2K|$ is base-point free.
In this paper, we shall describe the graded canonical module of a Noetherian multi-section ring of a normal projective variety. In particular, in the case of the Cox ring, we prove that the graded canonical module is a graded free module of rank one with the shift of degree $K_X$. We shall give two kinds of proofs. The first one utilizes the equivariant twisted inverse functor developed by the first author. The second proof is down-to-earth, that avoids the twisted inverse functor.
This paper presents new examples of projective surfaces of general type over $\mathbb{C}$ with canonical map of degree $ 3 $ onto a surface of general type. Very few examples are known of such surfaces and some of the examples in this paper present the new feature of having the canonical map not a morphism (i.e. the canonical linear system with base points).
We prove that the canonical cover of an Enriques surface does not admit non-trivial Fourier-Mukai partners. We also show that the canonical cover of a bielliptic surface has at most one non-isomorphic Fourier-Mukai partner. The first result is then applied to birational Hilbert schemes of points and the second to birational generalised Kummer varieties. An appendix establishes that there are no exceptional or spherical objects in the derived category of a bielliptic surface.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 3$ for which the canonical map induces a triple cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$ or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ is again canonical and induces a triple cover. The extremal case when $Y$ is embedded as a variety of minimal degree is of interest, due to its appearance in numerous situations. This is especially interesting as well, since it has n…
In this article we classify quadruple Galois canonical covers of smooth surfaces of minimal degree. The classification shows that they are either non-simple cyclic covers or bi-double covers. If they are bi-double then they are all fiber products of double covers. We construct examples to show that all the possibilities in the classification do exist. There are implications of this classification that include the existence of families with unbounded geometric genus and families with unbounded irregularity, in sharp contrast with the case of double and triple canonical covers. Together with the…
In the 80th birthday conference for Professor LU Qikeng in June 2006 I gave a talk on the analytic approach to the finite generation of the canonical ring for a compact complex algebraic manifold of general type. This article is my contribution to the proceedings of that conference from my talk. In this article I give an overview of the analytic proof and focus on explaining how the analytic method handles the problem of infinite number of interminable blow-ups in the intuitive approach to prove the finite generation of the canonical ring. The proceedings of the LU Qikeng conference will appea…
In this article we classify quadruple Galois canonical covers $ϕ$ of singular surfaces of minimal degree. This complements the work done in math.AG/0302045, so the main output of both papers is the complete classification of quadruple Galois canonical covers of surfaces of minimal degree, both singular and smooth. Our results show that the covers $X$ studied in this article are all regular surfaces and form a bounded family in terms of geometric genus $p_g$. In fact, the geometric genus of $X$ is bounded by 4. Together with the results of Horikawa and Konno for double and triple covers, a stri…
We introduce the class of weakly log canonical singularities, a natural generalization of semi-log canonical singularities. Toric varieties (associated to toric face rings, possibly non-normal or reducible) which have weakly (semi-) log canonical singularities are classified. In the toric case, we discuss residues to lc centers of codimension one or higher.
We classify all the surfaces of general type whose canonical map is composed with a pencil if they are the quotient of the diagonal action by an Abelian group acting over the product of two curves. As far as we know all the previous examples with isotrivial canonical map are very particular cases of our construction; moreover we find an unexpected action by a group of order 16. This construction can be easily generalizable to all dimensions.
We prove that any Fourier--Mukai partner of an abelian surface over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic is isomorphic to a moduli space of Gieseker-stable sheaves. We apply this fact to show that the Fourier--Mukai set of canonical covers of hyperelliptic and Enriques surfaces over an algebraically closed field of characteristic greater than three is trivial. These results extend to positive characteristic earlier results of Bridgeland--Maciocia and Sosna.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 2$, for which its canonical map induces a double cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$, or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ again is canonical and again induces a double cover. The second part of the article deals with the existence or non existence of canonical double structures on rational varieties. The negative result in this article has consequence…
Canonical orders, introduced in the minimal model program for orders, are simultaneous generalisations of Kleinian singularities and their associated skew group rings. In this paper, we construct minimal resolutions of canonical orders via non-commutative cyclic covers and skew group rings. This allows us to exhibit a derived equivalence between minimal resolutions of canonical orders and the skew group ring form of the canonical order in all but one case. The Fourier-Mukai transform used to construct this equivalence allows us to make explicit, the numerical version of the McKay correspondenc…
On August 5, 2005 in the American Mathematical Society Summer Institute on Algebraic Geometry in Seattle and later in several conferences I gave lectures on my analytic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring for the case of general type. After my lectures many people asked me for a copy of the slides which I used for my lectures. Since my slides were quite sketchy because of the time limitation for the lectures, I promised to post later on a preprint server my detailed notes from which my slides were extracted. Here are my detailed notes giving the techniques and the proof.
In this article we study pluriregular varieties X of general type with base-point-free canonical bundle whose canonical morphism has degree 3 and maps X onto a variety of minimal degree Y. We carry out our study from two different perspectives. First we study in Section 2 the canonical ring of X describing completely the degrees of its minimal generators. We apply this to the study of the projective normality of the images of the pluricanonical morphisms of X. Our study of the canonical ring of $X$ also shows that, if the dimension of X is greater than or equal to 3, there does not exist a con…
Let $\bar{Y}$ be a normal surface that is the canonical $μ_2$- or $α_2$-covering of a classical or supersingular Enriques surface in characteristic $2$. We determine all possible configurations of singularities on $\bar{Y}$, and for each configuration we describe which type of Enriques surfaces (classical or supersingular) appear as quotients of $\bar{Y}$.
In this article we study the bicanonical map $ϕ_2$ of quadruple Galois canonical covers X of surfaces of minimal degree. We show that $ϕ_2$ has diverse behavior and exhibit most of the complexities that are possible for a bicanonical map of surfaces of general type, depending on the type of X. There are cases in which $ϕ_2$ is an embedding, and if so happens, $ϕ_2$ embeds $X$ as a projectively normal variety, and cases in which $ϕ_2$ is not an embedding. If the latter, $ϕ_2$ is finite of degree 1, 2 or 4. We also study the canonical ring of X, proving that it is generated in degree less than o…
We propose an explicit conjectural lift of the Neron-Severi Lie algebra of a hyperkähler variety $X$ of $K3^{[2]}$-type to the Chow ring of correspondences ${\rm CH}^\ast(X \times X)$ in terms of a canonical lift of the Beauville-Bogomolov class obtained by Markman. We give evidence for this conjecture in the case of the Hilbert scheme of two points of a $K3$ surface and in the case of the Fano variety of lines of a very general cubic fourfold. Moreover, we show that the Fourier decomposition of the Chow ring of $X$ of Shen and Vial agrees with the eigenspace decomposition of a canonical lift …
This article is written for the Proceedings of the Conference on Current Developments in Mathematics in Harvard University, November 16-17, 2007. It is an exposition of the analytic proof of the finite generation of the canonical ring for a compact complex algebraic manifold of general type. It lists and discusses the main techniques and explains how they are put together in the proof. Of the various main techniques some special attention is given to (i) the technique of discrepancy subspaces and (ii) the technique of subspaces of minimum additional vanishing.
