In this article we study pluriregular varieties X of general type with base-point-free canonical bundle whose canonical morphism has degree 3 and maps X onto a variety of minimal degree Y. We carry out our study from two different perspectives.
First we study in Section 2 the canonical ring of X describing completely the degrees of its minimal generators. We apply this to the study of the projective normality of the images of the pluricanonical morphisms of X. Our study of the canonical ring of $X$ also shows that, if the dimension of X is greater than or equal to 3, there does not exist a converse to a theorem of M. Green that bounds the degree of the generators of the canonical ring of X. This is in sharp contrast with the situation in dimension 2 where such converse exists, as proved by the authors in a previous work.
Second, we study in Section 3, the structure of the canonical morphism of X. We use this to show among other things the non-existence of some a priori plausible examples of triple canonical covers of varieties of minimal degree. We also characterize the targets of flat canonical covers of varieties of minimal degree. Some of the results of Section 3 are more general and apply to varieties X which are not necessarily regular, and to targets Y that are scrolls which are not of minimal degree.
In this paper we prove a new generic vanishing theorem for $X$ a complete homogeneous variety with respect to an action of a connected algebraic group. Let $A, B_0\subset X$ be locally closed affine subvarieties, and assume that $B_0$ is smooth and pure dimensional. Let $\mathcal{P}$ be a perverse sheaf on $A$ and let $B=g B_0$ be a generic translate of $B_0$. Then our theorem implies $(-1)^{\operatorname{codim} B}χ(A\cap B, \mathcal{P}|_{A\cap B})\geq 0$. As an application, we prove in full generality a positivity conjecture about the signed Euler characteristic of generic triple intersection…
We show that Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane are isogenous to product of isogeny components of abelian varieties associated with singularities of the ramification locus. In particular Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane ramified over arrangements of lines and uniformized by unit ball are isogenous to a product of Jacobians of Fermat curves. Periodicity of the sequence of (semi-abelian) Albanese varieties of unramified cyclic covers of complements to a plane singular curve is shown.
We construct examples to show that having nef cotangent bundle is not preserved under finite ramified covers. Our examples also show that a projective manifold with Stein universal cover may not have nef cotangent bundle, disproving a conjecture of Liu-Maxim-Wang.
In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of quasi-projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of the abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of Abelian varieties by Galois covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. In particular, the resutls we obtain contribute in the construction of Jacobians (of covers of the projective line) of high rank.
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a finite ramified Galois covering of algebraic varieties defined over the complex numbers. In this paper, we prove some structure theorems for such coverings in the case that the non-abelian Galois group of the cover is metabelian (in particular metacyclic). Our results extend the previous ones, obtained by several authors, in the case of abelian and dihedral Galois coverings. In analogy with the abelian (and generalizing the dihedral) case, we find "building data" of metabelian covers from which the cover can be reconstructed. In addition to analyzing several examples, we co…
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
In this paper we construct Shimura subvarieties of dimension bigger than one of the moduli space of polarised abelian varieties of a given dimension, which are generically contained in the Pym loci of (ramified) double covers. The idea is to adapt the techniques already used to construct Shimura curves in the Prym loci to the higher dimensional case, namely to use families of Galois covers of the projective line. The case of abelian covers is treated in detail, since in this case it is possible to make explicit computations that allow to verify a sufficient condition for such a family to yield…
We develop a method to compute the Ekedahl-Oort type of a curve C over a field k of characteristic p (which is the isomorphism type of the p-kernel group scheme J[p], where J is the Jacobian of C). Part of our method is general, in that we introduce the new notion of a Hasse-Witt triple, which re-encodes in a useful way the information contained in the Dieudonne module of J[p]. For complete intersection curves we then give a simple method to compute this Hasse-Witt triple. An implementation of this method is available in Magma.
Studying coverings over algebraic varieties is an effective method in algebraic geometry. By combining the technique of triple cover from Miranda and Tan, we proved that if the degree of the branch divisor of a normal triple cover over $¶^2$ is no more than $18$ and not equal to $16$, then the trace-free bundle of the triple cover is uniform. Moreover, we totally classified all these trace-free bundles.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We study triple covers of K3 surfaces, following Miranda's theory of triple covers. We relate the geometry of the covering surfaces with the properties of both the branch locus and the Tschirnhausen vector bundle. In particular, we classify Galois triple covers computing numerical invariants of the covering surface and of its minimal model. We provide examples of non Galois triple covers, both in the case in which the Tschirnhausen bundle splits into the sum of two line bundles and in the case in which it is an indecomposable rank 2 vector bundle. We provide a criterion to construct rank 2 vec…
The presented paper is a continuation of the series of papers arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373. In this paper, utilizing Batyrev and Borisov's duality construction on nef-partitions, we generalize the recipe in arXiv:1810.00606 and arXiv:1903.09373 to construct a pair of singular double cover Calabi--Yau varieties $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ over toric manifolds and compute their topological Euler characteristics and Hodge numbers. In the $3$-dimensional cases, we show that $(Y,Y^{\vee})$ forms a topological mirror pair, i.e., $h^{p,q}(Y)=h^{3-p,q}(Y^{\vee})$ for all $p,q$.
We prove that under some conditions on the monodromy, families of abelian covers of the projective line do not give rise to (higher dimensional) Shimura subvarieties in $A_g$. This is achieved by a reduction to $p$ argument. We also use another method based on monodromy computations to show that two dimensional subvarieties in the above locus are not special. In particular it is shown that such families have usually large monodromy groups. Together with our earlier results, the above mentioned results contribute to classifying the special families in the moduli space of abelian varieties and p…
We investigate the Lefschetz standard conjecture for degree $2$ cohomology of hyper-Kähler manifolds admitting a covering by Lagrangian subvarieties. In the case of a Lagrangian fibration, we show that the Lefschetz standard conjecture is implied by the SYZ conjecture characterizing classes of divisors associated with Lagrangian fibration. In dimension $4$, we consider the more general case of a Lagrangian covered fourfold $X$, and prove the Lefschetz standard conjecture in degree $2$, assuming $ρ(X)=1$ and $X$ is general in moduli. Finally we discuss various links between Lefschetz cycles and…
Let $G$ be a symplectic or special orthogonal group, let $H$ be a connected reductive subgroup of $G$, and let $X$ be a flag variety of $G$. We classify all triples $(G,H,X)$ such that the natural action of $H$ on $X$ is spherical. For each of these triples, we determine the restrictions to $H$ of all irreducible representations of $G$ realized in spaces of sections of homogeneous line bundles on $X$.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 3$ for which the canonical map induces a triple cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$ or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ is again canonical and induces a triple cover. The extremal case when $Y$ is embedded as a variety of minimal degree is of interest, due to its appearance in numerous situations. This is especially interesting as well, since it has n…
In this article, we study $G$-covers of klt varieties, where $G$ is a reductive group. First, we exhibit an example of a klt singularity admitting a $\mathbb{P}{\rm GL}_n(\mathbb{K})$-cover that is not of klt type. Then, we restrict ourselves to $G$-quasi-torsors, a special class of $G$-covers that behave like $G$-torsors outside closed subsets of codimension two. Given a $G$-quasi-torsor $X\rightarrow Y$, where $G$ is a finite extension of a torus $\mathbb{T}$, we show that $X$ is of klt type if and only if $Y$ is of klt type. We prove a structural theorem for $\mathbb{T}$-quasi-torsors over …
In a previous paper, the authors proved that the Prym variety of any non-cyclic etale triple cover of a smooth curve of genus 2 is a Jacobian variety of dimension 2. This gives a map from the moduli space of such covers to the moduli space of Jacobian varieties of dimension 2. We extend this map to a proper map of a certain moduli space of admissible $S_3$-covers of genus 7 to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. The main result is that this map is finite surjective of degree 10.
Deligne's weight-monodromy conjecture gives control over the poles of local factors of L-functions of varieties at places of bad reduction. His proof in characteristic p was a step in his proof of the generalized Weil conjectures. Scholze developed the theory of perfectoid spaces to transfer Deligne's proof to characteristic 0, proving the conjecture for complete intersections in toric varieties. Building on Scholze's techniques, we prove the weight-monodromy conjecture for complete intersections in abelian varieties.
We study the (covering) gonality of abelian varieties and their orbits of zero-cycles for rational equivalence. We show that any orbit for rational equivalence of zero-cycles of degree $k$ has dimension at most $k-1$. Building on the work of Pirola, we show that very general abelian varieties of dimension $g$ have covering gonality $k\geq f(g)$ where $f(g)$ grows like ${\rm log}\,g$. This answers a question asked by Bastianelli, De Poi, Ein, Lazarsfeld and B. Ullery. We also obtain results on the Chow ring of very general abelian varieties, eg. if $g\geq 2k-1$, for any divisor $D\in {\rm Pic}^…
