Let $X$ be a smooth algebraic curve. Suppose that there exists a triple covering $f : X \to Y$ where $Y$ is a smooth algebraic curve. In this paper, we investigate the existence of morphisms from $X$ to the projective line $\mathbf{P}^1$ which do not factor through the covering $f$. For this purpose, we generalize the classical results of Maroni concerning base-point-free pencils on trigonal curves to the case of triple covers of arbitrary smooth irrational curves.
Let X be a smooth curve of genus g. When pi>=3g and d>=pi-2g+1 we show the existence of a double covering gamma:C-->X where C a smooth curve of genus pi with a base-point-free pencil of degree d which is not the pull-back of a pencil on X.
We consider coverings of real algebraic curves to real rational algebraic curves. We show the existence of such coverings having prescribed topological degree on the real locus. From those existence results we prove some results on Brill-Noether Theory for pencils on real curves. For coverings having topological degree 0 we introduce the covering number k and we prove the existence of coverings of degree 4 with prescribed covering number.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We prove that a general Fano fibration $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a double Fano hypersurface of index 1, is birationally superrigid provided it is sufficiently twisted over the base. In particular, on $V$ there are no other structures of a rationally connected fibration. The proof is based on the method of maximal singularities.
We complete the study of birational geometry of Fano fiber spaces $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$, the fiber of which is a Fano double hypersurface of index 1. For each family of these varieties we either prove birational rigidity or produce explicitly non-trivial structures of Fano fiber spaces. A new linear method of studying movable systems on Fano fiber spaces $V/{\mathbb P}^1$ is developed.
In the moduli space $\mathcal{R}_g$ of double étale covers of curves of a fixed genus $g$, the locus of covers of curves with a semicanonical pencil decomposes as the union of two divisors $\mathcal{T}^e_g$ and $\mathcal{T}^o_g$. Adapting arguments of Teixidor for the divisor of curves having a semicanonical pencil, we prove that both divisors are irreducible and compute their divisor classes in the Deligne-Mumford compactification $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_g$.
In this work we study the connection between the existence of finite dihedral covers of the projective plane ramified along an algebraic curve C, infinite dihedral covers, and pencils of curves containing C.
We continue to study birational geometry of Fano fibrations $π\colon V\to {\mathbb P}^1$ the fibers of which are Fano double hypersurfaces of index 1. For a majority of families of this type, which do not satisfy the condition of sufficient twistedness over the base, we prove birational rigidity (in particular, it means that there are no other structures of a fibration into rationally connected varieties) and compute their groups of birational self-maps. We considerably improve the principal components of the method of maximal singularities, in the first place, the technique of counting multip…
We show that the strata $ \mathcal{M}_{11,6}(k) \subset \mathcal{M}_{11} $ of $ 6-$gonal curves of genus $ 11 $, equipped with $k$ mutually independent and type I pencils of degree six, have a unirational irreducible component for $5\leq k\leq 9$. The unirational families arise from degree $ 9 $ plane curves with $ 4 $ ordinary triple and $ 5 $ ordinary double points that dominate an irreducible component of expected dimension. We will further show that the family of degree $ 8 $ plane curves with $ 10 $ ordinary double points covers an irreducible component of excess dimension in $ \mathcal{M…
We classify the minimal surfaces of general type with $K^2 \leq 4χ-8$ whose canonical map is composed with a pencil, up to a finite number of families. More precisely we prove that there is exactly one irreducible family for each value of $χ\gg 0$, $4χ-10 \leq K^2 \leq 4χ-8$. All these surfaces are complete intersections in a toric $4-$fold and bidouble covers of Hirzebruch surfaces. The surfaces with $K^2=4χ-8$ were previously constructed by Catanese as bidouble covers of $\PP^1 \times \PP^1$.
We investigate the moduli of genus 10 curves that are endowed with a faithful action of the icosahedral group $\mathcal{A}_5$. We show among other things that this has the structure of a Deligne-Mumford stack whose underlying coarse moduli space essentially consists of two copies of the pencil of plane sextics that was introduced by Winger in 1924, but with the unique unstable member (a triple conic) replaced by a smooth non-planar curve. The orbifold defined by any member has genus zero and comes with 4 orbifold points. We show that by numbering the points, we get a fine moduli space whose ba…
We construct two pencils of bielliptic curves of genus three and genus five. The first pencil is associated with a general abelian surface with a polarization of type $(1,2)$. The second pencil is related to the first by an unramified double cover, the Prym variety of which is canonically isomorphic to the Jacobian of a very general curve of genus two. Our results are obtained by analyzing suitable elliptic fibrations on the associated Kummer surfaces and rational double covers among them.
The complete classification of (3,3)-nets and of (3,4)-nets with only double and triple points is given. Up to lattice isomorphism, there are exactly 3 effective possibilities in each case, and some of these provide new examples of pencil-type line arrangements. For arrangements consisting of at most 14 lines and having points of multiplicity at most 5, we show that the non-triviality of the monodromy on the first cohomology H^1(F) of the associated Milnor fiber F implies the arrangement is of reduced pencil-type. In particular, the monodromy is determined by the combinatorics in such cases.
Let X be a smooth genus g curve equipped with a simple morphism f: X -> C, where C is either the projective line or more generally any smooth curve whose gonality is computed by finitely many pencils. Here we apply a method developed by Aprodu to prove that if g is big enough then X satisfies both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures. We also partially address the case in which the gonality of C is computed by infinitely many pencils.
Let $C$ be a smooth curve with gonality $k\ge 6$ and genus $g\ge 2k^2+5k-6$. We prove that $W^1_d({C})$ has the expected dimension and that the general element of any irreducible component of $W^1_d({C})$ is primitive if either $g-k+4\le d\le g-2$ or $d=g-k+3$ and either $k$ is odd or $C$ is not a double covering of a curve of gonality $k/2$ and genus $k-3$. Even in the latter case we prove the existence of a complete and primitive $g^1_{g-k+3}$.
Every compact symplectic 4-manifold can be realized as a branched cover of the complex projective plane branched along a symplectic curve with cusp and node singularities; the covering map is induced by a triple of sections of a "very ample" line bundle. In this paper, we give an explicit formula describing the behavior of the braid monodromy invariants of the branch curve upon degree doubling of the linear system (from a very ample bundle $L^k$ to $L^{2k}$). As a consequence, we derive a similar degree doubling formula for the mapping class group monodromy of Donaldson's symplectic Lefschetz …
Given a triple covering $X$ of genus $g$ of a general (in the sense of Brill-Noether) curve $C$ of genus $h$, we show the existence of base-point-free pencils of degree $d$ which are not composed with the triple covering for any $d\ge g-[{3h+1\over 2}]-1$ by utilizing some enumerative methods and computations. We also discuss about the sharpness of our main result and the so-called Castelnuovo-Severi bound byexhibiting some examples.
We give an asymptotic probabilistic real Riemann-Hurwitz formula computing the expected real ramification index of a random covering over the Riemann sphere. More generally, we study the asymptotic expected number and distribution of critical points of a random real Lefschetz pencil over a smooth real algebraic variety.
Studying coverings over algebraic varieties is an effective method in algebraic geometry. By combining the technique of triple cover from Miranda and Tan, we proved that if the degree of the branch divisor of a normal triple cover over $¶^2$ is no more than $18$ and not equal to $16$, then the trace-free bundle of the triple cover is uniform. Moreover, we totally classified all these trace-free bundles.
Given a triple cover p: X --> Y of varieties, we produce a new variety Z and a birational morphism f: Z --> X which is an isomorphism away from the fat-point ramification locus of p. The variety Z has a natural interpretation in terms of the data describing the triple cover, and the morphism f has an elegant geometric description.
We study triple covers of K3 surfaces, following Miranda's theory of triple covers. We relate the geometry of the covering surfaces with the properties of both the branch locus and the Tschirnhausen vector bundle. In particular, we classify Galois triple covers computing numerical invariants of the covering surface and of its minimal model. We provide examples of non Galois triple covers, both in the case in which the Tschirnhausen bundle splits into the sum of two line bundles and in the case in which it is an indecomposable rank 2 vector bundle. We provide a criterion to construct rank 2 vec…
We consider the general problem of enumerating branched covers of the projective line from a fixed general curve subject to ramification conditions at possibly moving points. Our main computations are in genus 1; the theory of limit linear series allows one to reduce to this case. We first obtain a simple formula for a weighted count of pencils on a fixed elliptic curve E, where base-points are allowed. We then deduce, using an inclusion-exclusion procedure, formulas for the numbers of maps E->P^1 with moving ramification conditions. A striking consequence is the invariance of these counts und…
We construct a surface of general type with canonical map of degree 12 which factors as a triple cover and a bidouble cover of $\mathbb P^2$. We also show the existence of a smooth surface with $q=0,$ $χ=13$ and $K^2=9χ$ such that its canonical map is either of degree 3 onto a surface of general type or of degree 9 onto a rational surface.
We study a period map for triple coverings of $\mathbf P^2$branching along special configurations of $6$ lines. Though the moduli space of special configurations isa two dimensional variety, the minimal models of the coverings form a oneparameter family of K3 surfaces. We extract extra one dimensionalinformation from the mixed Hodge structure on the second relative homology group.
We show that the Prym variety associated to a triple covering f: Y --> X of curves is principally polarized of dimension > 1, if and only if f is non-cyclic, etale and X is of genus 2. We investigate some properties of these Prym varieties and their moduli.
Let $ψ$ be the period map for a family of the cyclic triple coverings of the complex projective line branching at six points. The symmetric group $S_6$ acts on this family and on its image under $ψ.$ In this paper, we give an $S_6$-equivariant expression of $ψ^{-1}$ in terms of fifteen theta constants.
We show that the moduli spaces of non-triple cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves and that of even spin curves of genus 2 are birationally isomorphic via the Prym map. We describe the log canonical models of the moduli space of even spin curves of genus 2 and use this to extend the above birational map.
In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a smooth variety of general type of dimension $m \geq 3$ for which the canonical map induces a triple cover onto $Y$, where $Y$ is a projective bundle over $\mathbf P^1$ or onto a projective space or onto a quadric hypersurface, embedded by a complete linear series, then the general deformation of the canonical morphism of $X$ is again canonical and induces a triple cover. The extremal case when $Y$ is embedded as a variety of minimal degree is of interest, due to its appearance in numerous situations. This is especially interesting as well, since it has n…
Let $S$ and $T$ be reduced divisors on $\mathbb{P}^2$ which have no common components, and $Δ=S+2\,T.$ We assume $\degΔ=6.$ Let $π:X\to\mathbb{P}^2$ be a normal triple cover with branch divisor $Δ,$ i.e. $π$ is ramified along $S$ (resp. $T$) with the index 2 (resp. 3). In this note, we show that $X$ is either a $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundle over an elliptic curve or a normal cubic surface in $\mathbb{P}^3.$ Consequently, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $Δ$ to be the branch divisor of a normal triple cover over $\mathbb{P}^2.$
In this paper, we prove Thomae's formula for a triple covering of $\bold P^1$ with arbitrary index. This formula gives a relation between theta constants, determinants of period integrals and the difference products of branch points. To specify a symplectic basis of the curve, we use the combinatorics of binary trees on $\bold P^1$. This symplectic basis behaves so well for degenerations that we obtain the absolute constant in this formula and reduce it to a special case treated in [Bershadsky-Radul], [Nakayashiki].
In a previous paper, the authors proved that the Prym variety of any non-cyclic etale triple cover of a smooth curve of genus 2 is a Jacobian variety of dimension 2. This gives a map from the moduli space of such covers to the moduli space of Jacobian varieties of dimension 2. We extend this map to a proper map of a certain moduli space of admissible $S_3$-covers of genus 7 to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. The main result is that this map is finite surjective of degree 10.
We prove that the moduli spaces A_3(D) of polarized abelian threefolds with polarizations of types D=(1,1,2), (1,2,2), (1,1,3) or (1,3,3) are unirational. The result is based on the study of families of simple coverings of elliptic curves of degree 2 or 3 and on the study of the corresponding period mappings associated with holomorphic differentials with trace 0. In particular we prove the unirationality of the Hurwitz space H_{3,A}(Y) which parameterizes simply branched triple coverings of an elliptic curve Y with determinants of the Tschirnhausen modules isomorphic to A^{-1}.
We present an explicit parametrization of the families of lines of the Dwork pencil of quintic threefolds. This gives rise to isomorphic curves which parametrize the lines. These curves are 125:1 covers of certain genus six curves. These genus six curves are first presented as curves in P^1*P^1 that have three nodes. It is natural to blow up P^1*P^1 in the three points corresponding to the nodes in order to produce smooth curves. The result of blowing up P^1*P^1 in three points is the quintic del Pezzo surface dP_5, whose automorphism group is the permutation group S_5, which is also a symmetr…
Let S be a minimal complex surface of general type with $q(S)=0$. We prove the following statements concerning the algebraic fundamental group: I) Assume that K^2_S\leq 3χ(S). Then S has an irregular etale cover if and only if S has a free pencil of hyperelliptic curves of genus 3 with at least 4 double fibres. II) If K^2_S=3 and χ(S)=1, then S has no irregular etale cover. III) If K^2_S<3χ(S) and S does not have any irregular etale cover, then the order of the algebraic fundamental group is lesser or equal to 9, and if equality occurs then K^2_S=2, χ(S)=1.
In this article we study pluriregular varieties X of general type with base-point-free canonical bundle whose canonical morphism has degree 3 and maps X onto a variety of minimal degree Y. We carry out our study from two different perspectives. First we study in Section 2 the canonical ring of X describing completely the degrees of its minimal generators. We apply this to the study of the projective normality of the images of the pluricanonical morphisms of X. Our study of the canonical ring of $X$ also shows that, if the dimension of X is greater than or equal to 3, there does not exist a con…
Let U be an open subset of a unirational variety. We prove that there is rational curve C in U such that the fundamental group of C surjects onto the fundamental group of U. As a consequence we obtain new proofs of the theorems of Harbater and Colliot-Thélène on Galois covers and torsors over the p-adic line. We also obtain examples of pencils of curves of genus <14 whose monodromy group is the full Teichmüller group.
We prove the birational superrigidity and the nonrationality of a cyclic triple cover of $\mathbb{P}^{2n}$ branched over a nodal hypersurface of degree $3n$ for $n\ge 2$. In particular, the obtained result solves the problem of the birational superrigidity of smooth cyclic triple spaces. We also consider certain relevant problems.
I show that the set of smooth curves of genus g admitting branched coverings X->P^1 with only triple ramification points has dimension at least max(2g-3,g). In characteristic two, such curves have tame rational functions and an analog of Belyi's Theorem applies to them.

Let $S$ be a smooth minimal surface of general type with a (rational) pencil of hyperelliptic curves of minimal genus $g$. We prove that if $K_S^2<4χ(\mathcal O_S)-6,$ then $g$ is bounded. The surface $S$ is determined by the branch locus of the covering $S\rightarrow S/i,$ where $i$ is the hyperelliptic involution of $S.$ For $K_S^2<3χ(\mathcal O_S)-6,$ we show how to determine the possibilities for this branch curve. As an application, given $g>4$ and $K_S^2-3χ(\mathcal O_S)<-6,$ we compute the maximum value for $χ(\mathcal O_S).$ This list of possibilities is sharp.
It is known that the monodromy group of each cover of a general curve of genus g>3 equals either the symmetric or the alternating group. The classical Catalan numbers count the minimal degree covers (with symmetric monodromy) of a general curve of even genus. We solve the analogous problem for the alternating group and we determine the number of alternating covers of minimal degree 2g+1 of a general curve of genus g.
The following divisors in the space Sym^{12} P^1 of twelve points on P^1 are actually the same: (A) the possible locus of the twelve nodal fibers in a rational elliptic fibration (i.e. a pencil of plane cubic curves); (B) degree 12 binary forms that can be expressed as a cube plus a square; (C) the locus of the twelve tangents to a smooth plane quartic from a general point of the plane; (D) the branch locus of a degree 4 map from a hyperelliptic genus 3 curve to P^1; (E) the branch locus of a degree 3 map from a genus 4 curve to P^1 induced by a theta-characteristic; and several more. The corr…
Bidouble covers $π: S \mapsto Q$ of the quadric Q are parametrized by connected families depending on four positive integers a,b,c,d. In the special case where b=d we call them abc-surfaces. Such a Galois covering $π$ admits a small perturbation yielding a general 4-tuple covering of Q with branch curve $\De$, and a natural Lefschetz fibration obtained from a small perturbation of the composition of $ π$ with the first projection. We prove a more general result implying that the braid monodromy factorization corresponding to $\De$ determines the three integers a,b,c in the case of abc-surfaces…
Faltings' theorem [Fal83],[Fal91] (formerly the Mordell conjecture [Mo22]) states that a curve of genus greater than one over any number field has only finitely many points. Again a natural question is how many points can such a curve have. Caporaso, Harris, and Mazur [CHM97] have shown that the weak Bombieri-Lang conjecture implies that for any number field $F$ and any integer $g \ge 2$ there is an absolute upper bound $B(F; g)$ on the number of points on a genus $g$ curve over $F$. Furthermore, the strong Bombieri-Lang conjecture implies that for each genus $g \ge 2$, there is an absolute bo…
In this paper we establish a congruence on the degree of the map from a component of a Hurwitz space of covers of elliptic curves to the moduli stack of elliptic curves. Combinatorially, this can be expressed as a congruence on the cardinalities of Nielsen equivalence classes of generating pairs of finite groups. Building on the work of Bourgain, Gamburd, and Sarnak, we apply this congruence to show that for all but finitely many primes $p$, the group of Markoff automorphisms acts transitively on the nonzero $\mathbb{F}_p$-points of the Markoff equation $x^2 + y^2 + z^2 - 3xyz = 0$. This yield…
